Katie Helps Out is a simple story about a young girl who helps out at a beach cleanup. Katie uses a pointed stick to pick up trash and feels great when the beach is clean at the end of the day. This is part of the Katie Can series. The books are for beginning readers written primarily in basic sight words with a list of new vocabulary at the beginning. Each of the four books has a simple story about Katie, who happens to have Down Syndrome. The books all point out that Katie needs help learning to do things and may need a little extra effort, but that she is capable. They point out that she is otherwise just like all the other kids. These books provide emergent readers with an early look at someone who is differently abled. They also give readers who have Down Syndrome books that act as mirrors. Everyone needs to be able to see themselves in a book.
