Plymouth Undercover wanted to be a good story. Had a great plot, but just does not live up to its potential. The characters are pretty shallow and incredible. A wannabe actress chucks her “dream” to come back and take over running her father’s private investigation firm? She and her mother/partner immediately take on a missing persons cum murder case? No experience, no license – except for an 80-year-old employee (not partner, manager or owner of the company). It begs credulity.

Every step taken, sight seen, thought… thought is spelled out in full detail plus, with an over the top obsession with food. Details in a story help develop the characters or move the story forward, when there is a point to them. But when the “point” feels like the detail is merely to stretch the word count far enough to qualify as a novel rather than a short story, it is too much. That is the case here.

The narrator needs to learn how to narrate without gasping for air. Additionally, she sounds more like a starry-eyed child than someone who believes they are going to be a successful private investigator. There is no strength behind the voice. No drive, no determination. It verges on simpering – and is not pleasant or appropriate for the story.
In all, it was neither a pleasant story nor listen.

Plymouth Undercover is a fantastic new mystery from Pamela Kelley. I love this author's women fiction books and I am a huge mystery fan so I knew I would love this book, but WOW! I REALLY loved it!!

After her father's death, Emma and her mom inherit Court Street Investigations a popular Private Investigation firm in Plymouth, Mass. With the help of a 80 year YOUNG retried detective they had it all under control for your basic cheating spouses, fraudulent workmen comp cases.

They were not expecting to be hired to locate a missing person which ended up being a murder investigation.

Having been to Plymouth, the descriptions were spot on and added such a small town feel element to this mystery. The description of the food alone made me hungry.

The characters were well developed and fleshed out .

But the mystery stole the show. I really loved how little clues were dropped at a perfect pace.

Sit back, follow the clues and enjoy a fantastic Mystery . Here is hoping another book in this series is coming.

I cannot recommend this book enough!

After a few pages, I was questioning how the author found a publisher until I learned she has her own publishing company. Yes, this is a very quick read that might be fine for killing time at the beach, but it certainly doesn't live up the glowing reviews here and on Amazon. Instead it reads like a mix of Yelp reviews for Plymouth restaurants and product placements for fashion labels. There is no real plot tension or twists. There are not even an interesting interpersonal relationships. Even Nancy Drew was a more engaging detective.

Plymouth Undercover by Pamela M. Kelley introduces Emma McCarthy as a thirty year old failed actress who moves home to Plymouth, MA when she and her mother, Cindy, inherit a private detective agency. The agency comes with a part-time employee, Mickey, an 80 year old retired detective. They expected to be dealing primarily cheating spouses or workman’s comp cases, but they quickly learn that the agency has quite a reputation for solving missing persons cases and murders as well. This is a well-written novel with great attention to detail with the descriptions of the locale around Plymouth and the food adding a bit of reality.

So fun to read this mystery which takes place in Plymouth. The mystery was fun, but my favorite part was all the local restaurants they went to. And there were a lot! I’ll definitely follow this series.

Loved this suspense , a new direction for me with this author , (love her Nantucket series). Emma and her mother has inherited her father's Agency along with a fun spirited 80 year old Micki who spends his day Sleuthing and showing Emma the ropes . They stumble upon a possible murder when a woman asks or help finding her missing daughter . Page turner for sure , cant wait to see what comes next .

Plymouth Undercover is the first book in a new mystery series by Pamela Kelley. This story has rave reviews and I do understand why, it’s cute and sweet and mystery-lite. In fact, it truly reads like a Hallmark mystery, if there is such a thing. It’s a very short story at 236 pages and is a G-rated, cozy-mystery-esque story. It’s got a great setting and very amicable characters, but as a faithful mystery-thriller reader, it just didn’t have enough suspense and momentum to keep my attention.

This story will work great for people who only dabble in the mystery genre and prefer cozies or lighter women’s fiction. It’s a pleasant, quick read, reminding me of books I’ve seen advertised for my kindle (if that makes sense 🤓😜).

I love the second chance at life Emma finds in returning to her home town- there she works with her mom at her late father's private investigation firm. She thought it would be easy, checking up on workmen's comp and insurance claims but Emma jumps in with both feet to help investigate a murder.
Will the handsome hunk neighbor be the guilty party?
You'll have to read the book and find out - enjoy

Autumn - Plymouth, MA

The story is about a detective agency solving a missing person case. It becomes a murder case. There are other crimes to sort out too. The food and setting were delightful. The mystery was interesting. I thought some of the characters made some foolish mistakes, though.

There isn’t anything exciting or intense that stands out with this story, but I did enjoy meeting the characters and going on surveillance and doughnut runs with Emma and Mickey.

Emma McCarthy moves back home to Plymouth, Massachusetts after her acting career fails to take off. She rents a cute little cottage on the beach and begins working at the private investigation agency left to her and her mother by her father. Initially I really thought this wasn’t going to be successful for Emma because a: she isn’t a licensed PI, b: she has no experience or training as a private investigator and c: there doesn’t seem to be enough work in this community to keep them occupied.

I will happily admit that I was pleasantly surprised at how likable the characters were. Emma was easy to relate to and what she lacks in experience and training, she makes up for in tenacity and willingness to learn. Emma’s mom, Cindy, was equally likable. She helps out in the office, scheduling appointments with prospective clients while also managing her own yoga studio. There is a side story for Cindy and a prospective boyfriend that I enjoyed as well.

My favorite character is Mickey, an octogenarian retired police detective, who is the agency’s part-time employee. I loved this character and his love of doughnuts. He takes Emma under his wing and begins showing her the ropes right from the start and their relationship comes naturally.

While this agency usually deals with the typical cheating spouse or workman’s comp fraud cases, they end up taking on a missing person’s case that turns into a murder investigation. Out of all of the people at this agency, Mickey is the only one who would have any experience working a homicide investigation, but before I could process what is going on, Emma is taking on an undercover temporary assignment at the law firm where the dead woman worked.

The case is resolved very quickly without bogging the reader down with tons of details and potential suspects. In fact, I hadn’t begun to formulate any of my own theories about the perpetrator and the story was concluding.

My Final Verdict: Overall, this story was enjoyable. The character development was smooth and seamless, evoking empathy from me. I found the characters to be likable and easy to relate to and am interested in what happens to them next. The story didn’t move at a fast pace, but was wrapped up without any warning, which left me initially wondering if I missed something.

The narration of this story was performed by Leslie Howard and, though, I can’t recall any other titles she has read, her performance was well done on this story. I recommend this book to readers of mysteries and general fiction. The possibility of romance looms on the horizon for Cindy and, possibly, Emma, which may be explored in future installments.

Being a Pamela Kelley fan I knew Plymouth Undercover would not disappoint......and it didn't. Her writing is easy to follow and her characters are real people. When Emma and Cindy inherited Court Street Investigations they were prepared for small time investigations. Things like spouses cheating and embezzlement. Then they were hired to find a local missing woman and didn't expect it to turn into a murder case. With each chapter I became more invested . The story was full of anticipation wondering what would happen next. Who would next become a suspect? You will have to read the book to find out who it was and you won't be disappointed. I loved everything about this book and didn't want it to end. It definitely deserves five stars.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway and received it directly from the author. She signed the book, added a very nice note and sent a chocolate bar along with it. A really fun surprise!

I enjoyed this light and fun detective novel. The characters were easy to like and I didn’t really predict who committed the murder. I’d reach for this author again and I hope I can follow these characters more.

WOW!
I didn't go into this book expecting too much, but I was blown away at what a quick, fantastic read it was.

Emma and her mom, Cindy inherit a PI Agency, which comes complete with a octogenarian. Mickey is a retired cop turned PI who helps the ladies get up an running. While she expects the usual cheating spouses and fraud cases, she doesn't expect to get pulled into a missing person case, let alone a murder investigation.

A well written novel with great details, you can really feel yourself in Plymouth. Nice amount of clues dropped through the book, and a great twist of an ending! I can't wait to read more from this series.

Thanks to Netgalley for the advanced copy of this audio book!

A good, quick read with a beautiful setting and loveable characters. It was very short but this didn't stop the story from fully developing nor stop the author from delivering a complete mystery with several possible suspects. Hoping for more in this series.

The narration was well done, no issues.

It was okay. I liked the setting (maybe I need a vacation) but I had trouble following the plot. I had some trouble with keeping some of the characters straight (the male characters didn't sound very male). Read my full review at Girl Who Reads.

Emma McCarthy has returned to Plymouth, MA after Her father died and left his PI business to both her and her mother.
The agency consists of Emma, her mom, Cindy, and an older retired police detective who is nearing 80 years old, Mickey.
She was a semi-successful actress with some small parts and a few commercials under her belt.
But, at almost thirty years old, she knew she would probably never make a name for herself in Hollywood.
One of her first cases is from a mother of a young lawyer who disappeared and has not been heard from in several weeks.
Shortly after starting the case, the young women's body washes up on the shore.
The girl's mother wants them to continue with the case as the police aren't moving fast enough for her.

This was a fun story with defined characters, a little humor, and a few red herrings are thrown in also.
It is a slow paced story that kept my attention throughout.

To me its reads between a cozy and traditional mystery, with it leaning just a little closer to a traditional one.

One of the nicer things in the story is it doesn't follow the cut stamp of the main character falling for the police detective and him having to come and save the day at the end of the book.

This time it's her mother who is developing a relationship with the officer.
And while she still works for the agency, it's a nice change.

As mystery novels go, I really enjoyed this. It is well written, clean with no superfluous writing trying to make it seem edgy or Pulitzer Prize material just a good mystery with logically dialogue & scenarios. It is set local to my area and that was very also very well done. It didn’t keep me up with grisly chilling details. Just a basic enjoyable mystery well done

Plymouth Undercover is a mystery from Pamela Kelley, that I enjoyed. I have only read one book of hers before, a women fiction story, so was surprised that I enjoyed this so much. Emma McCarthy has been trying to make it big as an actress, but when her father dies, she returns home to Plymouth, Mass. She and her mom, Cindy, have inherited a P.I. Firm, Court Street Investigations. Emma worked in the office when she was younger and has fond memories of Mickey, her dad's one employee. Mickey is an 80 year old retired police detective and he is ready to show Emma the ropes. They are ready for the normal cases, cheating spouses, comp cases and the occasional missing person who skipped out on rent, but they were not expecting the case they were approached about on Emma's first day on the job. They have been hired to locate a missing person which ended up being a murder investigation.

I enjoyed the characters working at the firm, they were well developed and fleshed out. I like that Emma is happy with her new job and not bitter that her acting career didn't work out. She is ready to learn everything and eventually get her P.I. license. Cindy and Emma's dad were divorced so she is dating at this time and I am looking forward to learning more about her, if this becomes a series. Mickey is wonderful. He is a bit gruff, but knows what he is doing and wants to take care of Emma and make sure she is not hurt. The mystery was well plotted and interesting. There were lots of suspects and I enjoyed seeing how Emma and Mickey work together to solve it. The clues were dropped along the way, with a few red herrings, which allows the reader to solve the mystery along with Emma. I have never been to Plymouth, so I enjoyed the descriptions of the small town and the food. Overall, this was an enjoyable mystery, bordering on a cozy, and I hope this will become a series. Leslie Howard narrates the audiobook and it was enjoyable to listen to. She has a very pleasant voice and is easy to listen to. She gives individual voices to the female characters, but her male voices sound very feminine and similar. That is often the issue when there is only one narrator. I did like the voice she gave Mickey, though. Her expression and emotion added to the story and I will listen to other books she narrates. I recommend this story to those who enjoy a cozy mystery in either book or audiobook. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.

Plymouth Undercover by Pamela M Kelley is the first book in a new series, Court Street Investigations. Emma is 30 years old and has spent the last ten years in Los Angles, trying to establish an acting career. It never took off and when she returned to Plymouth for her father's funeral and discovered he had left his private investigations business to her and her mother, she decided to give it a try. She had always loved helping him, her career was going nowhere, and she didn't love Los Angeles, so here she was. She had rented a little cottage on the beach from a friend of her dad's and was learning how to do surveillance on people from 80-year-old, Mickey, an ex-cope who had worked part-time for her dad and had decided to stay with the agency as long as they wanted him. Their agency mostly did insurance fraud claims and gathering evidence on straying spouses. She was enjoying it so far, except for eating too much junk food.

Emma was bright and curious. She had also inherited from her dad a propensity to walk a little too close to the edge. Mickey was an old man but full of energy and happy to have something to do. He is quite the character and constantly guiding Emma with care. Her mom, Cindy, is happy to just run the business part of the business. The victim had already been missing several weeks by the time Emma moved back to Plymouth. Then, they discovered her body when it washed up on shore. It was now a murder. The victim's mother had hired them when it was a missing persons case, then asked them to hold off when it became murder. When the police were hitting a wall, she asked them to start up again. It was a good mystery, and a good investigation. Mickey is smart and Emma is learning quickly. It was an advantage that she was new in town.

Leslie Howard was the reader for this audio version of the book and she did a fine job. The only criticism I have is that some, not all, of her female voices sounded the same, which made following a conversation a little challenging. All in all, I enjoyed the audio version.

I was invited to listen to a free audio version of Plymouth Undercover by Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #netgalley #plymouthundercover

Plymouth Undercover
by: Pamela M. Kelley
narrated by: Leslie Howard
Dreamscape Media - Piping Plover Press

In Plymouth Undercover, author Pamela Kelley has provided everything needed and then some for an entertaining cozy romantic mystery audiobook set in the historical setting of Plymouth, Massachusetts. Leslie Howard's smooth and engaging narration is a real treat and bonus for listeners.
The mother-daughter team of Emma and Cindy, along with 80-year-old Mickey, are investigative sleuths at Court Street Investigations. It is housed in a 100-year-old brick building overlooking Main Street in Plymouth. Emma has just moved back to Plymouth after a failed career, and Cindy is a widowed yoga instructor whose husband, the owner of the detective agency died two years ago and left the business to her. Mickey, who is well experienced in private detective work, has a passion for doughnuts and pastries to fuel his work.
The routine of infidelity cases and such is shaken up when there is a missing woman case to be solved in Plymouth. The story flows in both mysterious, romantic, and foodie ways as Emma and Cindy meet new people, including some intriguing men. Kelley writes wonderful descriptions of food, whether it's business meeting pistachio nut muffins from a grocery deli, Mickey's favorite peppermint ice cream, or a date night meal with pimento cheese appetizers in a window-view local restaurant.
I enjoyed following these three as they worked to solve the case. I loved Howard's voice in bringing us this story, along with Kelley's detail in describing the day to day happenings. I feel as if I want a job at this detective agency in Plymouth, and will also become addicted to the doughnuts needed to perform the job!
Thank you to Net Galley, Dreamscape Media and Piping Plover Press for the advance reader's copy of this audiobook and the opportunity to provide my unbiased review.
