Jack and Jill and big dog Bill go sledding one snowy winter day. When big dog Bill notices a rabbit on the hill, mayhem ensues. This fun phonics reader helps early readers with the use of alliteration and rhyming.
I'm such a fan of phonics-based early readers, like this one. This one has a fine story, and it's beautifully written as well.
Illustrations are engaging, lively and spirited.
But they can barely keep up with Martha Weston's fabulous storytelling. What a musical ear she has, on top of all the phonics knowledge that can help readers make cumulative progress... rapidly.
Have a listen, Goodreaders. From Pages 18 and 19:
BUMP. PLOP. They all stop.
"More!" says Jack. "More!" says Jill.
And if you're like me, Goodreaders, you'll find the joy of this book is truly contagious.
Level 1 phonics marked by the publisher Random House as the Step into Reading (Early). The story is cute with many repetitive words. No vocabulary lists, but I would note the words: down, bump, plop, and more as they are introduced.
This is a super cute kids book - great for early readers or beginning Spanish learners. The concepts are clear, repeated and the artwork is outstanding. There's a lot going on in this book and I think it's a great book to add to the shelf for little kids.
I like how the book explains what they are doing, going up, up, up and then coming down, down, down the hill. And it is a snow day so they get to drink hot chocolate.
Miloš: The part that I liked was when they all had fun and went down the hill. The next part I wanted to say was that I liked when the bunny was on their toboggan. And I liked that they all went home and had a fire. That looked pretty cozy.
Mama: What did you like about Jack and Jill and Big Dog Bill? Brontë: I like that Jill saw the bunny. That was cute. Pa: Do you think Jack and Jill and Big Dog Bill is as good as Where the Wild Things Are or do you think that Where the Wild Things Are is better? Brontë: Well, I think Where the Wild Things Are is harder to read. Pa: But it'll get easier as you read more. Brontë: What I don't like is that Bill made Jack push at the end and Jill pull. What else I liked is that Jack and Jill slipped on a banana and a cookie (keeheeheehee - I'm just kidding). And I like that Bill and Jack and Jill did a whoosh and it was just like bwooooo! into the snow. And what else that I liked was that the bunny, I liked that he was standing on their thingy. And then that's the end.
This cute book is about Jack, Jill, and Big Dog Bill going sleding. Bill pulls Jack and Jill up the hill several times then pushes them down. Finally Bill refuses to push them up the hill so they put him on the sled and push him up the hill. When they get to the top a rabbit jumps up and scares Bill and the three of them tumble down the hill while the rabbit rides the sled. After this they all decide to go home. I would use this book in my class to discuss rhyming. I would show them with this book that writting a poem or rhyming story did not have to be hard or boring, that it could be fun!
I read this to my grandson for 3 days in a row, using my finger to point out each word as I read along. (He's 4 and knew most of his letter sounds.) On the 3rd day, I asked him if he'd like to read it. He said yes. I pointed to the words and had him read each one. The first couple of times, it was guessing. After that, I pointed ou the "ill" sounds in them and he started watching the words as he read them. I made him a few pages of short vowel sound words afterward. In 2 days, he was reading over 200 words. I love beginning readers like this one!!! Very well written, Martha! Thank you!! My grandkids absolutely love this one and so do I. ;)
This is a fun book for beginning readers. It has lively, colorful illustrations and the narrative is repetitive enough for younger readers to get familiar with the words and feel like they can read it quickly. Our girls took turns reading this book and it gave them a good sense of accomplishment. This is an easy book for my oldest (almost 7,) but perfect for my youngest (just turned 5).
This is an excellent beginner book for your child if they have just started reading. Many of the words are the ones that end in "ill" and also teaches movement words like "up" "Down" and "around". But done in a fun adventurous way with a sled, two children and a fun dog.
In this book, two children are sledding and on the third time, they fall down the hill. So, they go home and warm up. This book is great for really young readers. It is a book of rhymes for beginners. I would use it in my classroom as a free time reading book.
The pictures and story are hysterical. Great story for the emergent reader to read by him/herself or for a parent to read to younger ones. This is a great story that I enjoy along with my kids!
(age 5) I loved when Jack and Jill and Big Dog Bill went up the snow mountain, and I liked when they went down the hill too. I read it in the car all by myself!
It is not easy writing a book for beginning readers that is actually funny. This one is. I definitely recommend this book if you have a kid who is learning to read.
