«Γράφω και εικονογραφώ παιδικά βιβλία από τότε που αποφοίτησα από τη σχολή καλών τεχνών, αλλά δεν είχα σκεφτεί ποτέ να ζωγραφίσω κάτι για μεγάλους, μέχρι που έκανα τα παιδιά μου. Δεν ήθελα όλες εκείνες οι ξεκαρδιστικές και όμορφες στιγμές της παιδικής τους ηλικίας να χαθούν σαν να τις πήρε ο άνεμος. Ένιωσα ότι ο μόνος τρόπος να τις απαθανατίζω ήταν μέσα από βιαστικά σκιτσάκια, κάτι σαν ημερολόγιο με εικόνες, αν θέλετε. Αυτά τα σκιτσάκια γίνονταν ως επί το πλείστον υπερβολικά νωρίς το πρωί, μ’ έναν καφέ στο χέρι, με το μπλοκ μου στα πόδια μου, με τα αγόρια να σκαρφαλώνουν πάνω μου και να «δανείζονται» τα μολύβια μου. Ελπίζω ότι, εκτός από την ολοκληρωτική εξάντληση και το απόλυτο πανδαιμόνιο που χαρακτηρίζουν τη μητρότητα, κατάφερα να απεικονίσω ένα μέρος της μαγείας όλης αυτής της περιόδου».

If I were to put it plainly, I would say—my heart feels warm, toasty, and cosy after reading this book! :')
Coupling Dunbar’s quick hand-drawn sketches with her (and her childrens’) beautiful, silly, witty, and honest remarks is enough to make us see (and appreciate) parenthood in bright new light.

This collection of comics about motherhood is super charming, and also very realistic. I loved so many of the illustrations. While this is a book for adults, my 4-year-old insisted on reading it with me, and she loved it! She couldn't stop laughing. It's not a book for kids, definitely for moms, but she loved it so much she read it twice today! This would make a great mother's day gift.

Θα μπορούσε να ήταν καταγραφή της δικής μου καθημερινότητας, θα μπορούσε να ήταν της δικής σας. Τόσο άμεσο, τόσο κοντά σε αυτό που ζούμε που σκέφτομαι πως σίγουρα η Polly Dunbar έχε βάλει κάμερες και με παρακολουθεί! Μόνο που από ό,τι φαίνεται η μητρότητα και τα καθημερινά ευτράπελα που την ακολουθούν όταν έχεις παιδιά είναι πάνω κάτω ίδια, ανεξάρτητα αν μένεις Ελλάδα ή αν μένεις Αγγλία!

Ξεκίνησε να κρατά ένα είδος ημερολογίου, κάνοντας σκιτσάκια από την καθημερινότητά της με τα παιδιά. Παρόλο που στο βιβλίο ξεκινάει από την πρώτη της εγκυμοσύνη, η αλήθεια είναι ότι η Dunbar ξεκίνησε να σκιτσάρει όταν τα παιδιά της ήταν 2χρ και 5χρ. Δεν είχε σκοπό να τα εκδώσει ή να τα μοιραστεί με οποιοδήποτε τρόπο με άλλους. Απλά ήθελε να καταγράψει μικρές καθημερινές στιγμές, τη μαγεία του να ζεις με μικρά παιδιά, αλλά και τα συναισθήματά της που άλλες φορές την έκαναν να πετά από χαρά, ενώ άλλες ένιωθε να γίνεται χίλια κομμάτια. Άλλες φορές εντυπωσιασμένη από τα θαυματάκια της, από τη δημιουργικότητά τους και τη φαντασία τους και άλλες φορές εξαντλημένη από την αϋπνία, και τις σκανδαλιές τους. Επειδή ακριβώς δεν είχε σκοπό να τα μοιραστεί με κανέναν, δεν ανησυχούσε αν θα έπρεπε να προσέχει τι ζωγραφίζει και πώς, άφηνε το χέρι της να την οδηγήσει και να βγάλει από μέσα της αυτά ακριβώς που ένιωθε, όπως ήταν τα πράγματα και όπως τα βίωνε...

Super süße Illustrationen in denen sich neue Mamas (und Papas) wiederfinden können, sowohl mit lachendem als auch weinendem Auge. Manche Gefühle kann man einfach nicht in Worten ausdrücken, aber einige dieser Zeichnungen schaffen es genau. Zum Beispiel wie man immer wieder sein Kind anschaut, in allen möglichen Situationen, und denk 'unfassbar/wahnsinn/wie geht das?'.
Sehr geeignet als Geschenk für Erst-Eltern, aber auch noch, wenn ein Geschwisterchen unterwegs ist, denn auch diese Phase wird gezeigt. Das ganze Buch ist in diverse Phasen unterteilt, so wie auch die kindliche und somit elterliche Entwicklung.
Kleinen Abzug gibt es für das Format. Ich verstehe total, dass die (doch recht simplen Strich-) Zeichnungen in groß und mit viel Freiraum am schönsten wirken, dennoch kommen dadurch recht viele Seiten und ein etwas schweres Buch heraus. Das muss eine stillende Mama (ich) z.B. neben sich liegen haben, statt es noch in der Hand halten und durchblättern zu können.
Außerdem hätten die genannten Phasen noch eine Bezeichnung verdient, damit klarer wird was nun 'neu' ist. Im Falle des Geschwisterchens ist es natürlich eindeutig.

Nachdem ich Graphic Novels für mich entdeckt habe, hat Polly Dunbar nun mit „Hallo Mama. Vom (fast immer) großartigen Leben mit kleinen Kindern“ das perfekte Thema für mich getroffen.
Bilder sagen mehr als Worte – mit minimalistischen Zeichnungen und wenig Worten beschreibt die eigentliche Kinderbuchautorin und Illustratorin ihren Alltag als Mutter und damit den von so vielen anderen Müttern so treffend, dass ich mich auf jeder Seite so verstanden gefühlt habe, wie noch von keinem Buch übers Mutterdasein. Absolut treffend veranschaulicht sie die Ambivalenz der Gefühle als Mutter von „Ich könnte dich auf den Mond schießen“ und gleichzeitig „Ich liebe dich bis zum Mond und wieder zurück“.
Ich bin schier begeistert von dieser Graphic Novel und werde sie immer wieder zur Hand nehmen, wenn ich mal was zum Lachen brauche, oder Verständnis in einem Moment der Verzweiflung - und von beiden gibt es ja im Alltag mit kleinen Kindern genügend ;)

Dit boek, dat bol staat van de mooie illustraties en herkenbare teksten neemt je mee doorheen het moederschap. Wat moederschap is, kan zijn, wat je soms zou willen dat het is en wat het betekent voor je relatie.
De illustraties en teksten zijn echt en oprecht. Ik herkende ze allemaal en ze zijn allemaal zo waar. De vermoeidheid die steeds overtroffen geraakt door de overvloed aan liefde. Over de onschuld van kinderen en hoe ze ervoor zorgen dat je de wereld anders ziet, grimmiger maar op zoveel manier zoveel mooier.
Een boek dat een ideaal kraamcadeau is. Een boek, zo schoon, dat de momenten dat je je kinderen even achter het behang wil plakken, mooi worden. Een boek dat je door zijn illustraties compleet ontroerd en verwarmd.

I’m crying wonderful exhausted tears. I love this book with all my heart I want to thank Polly for creating it and summing up the wonderful exhausting chaos that is motherhood. Polly summed up all the things that no one tells you before having children in such heart achingly beautiful yet simple detail and I am incredibly thankful.
