On her graduation night at a high school in South Florida, Perry Baldwin is dragged unwillingly along with five former high school peers on an adventure that she will soon regret. Lured down to the Everglades with the promise of drugs, the graduates unknowingly set off a horrific chain of events that will pit them against one of history's deadliest coastal predators. Cut off from escape, Perry is faced with not only the terrors that await in the swamp, but also the deteriorating mental state of her group as the teenagers struggle to reach society in time - or die trying.
MEGACROC: Origins is the prequel to the 2020 hit novel, MEGACROC. In this explosive teen-scream entry into the series, uncover the events taking place immediately before the Deinosuchus terrorized the residents of the notorious Sunset Ridge housing plan.
High School Graduation Celebration It doesn't matter what order you read the first two books in the Megacroc series by author Julian Michael Carver. But I only realized this after finishing both Megacroc books. I really enjoy giant killer Alligator/Crocodile stories. The locations they live in is very atmospheric and not all that easily conducive to Human cohabitation. There are other killer reptiles namely snakes in the area.
Their habitat is humid, dank, and swampy. The odors are often fetid. The hanging branches of the trees form a curtain often blocking the sun. The water was nasty, marshy, full of algae giving it a greenish tinct. The dark greenish color of the Crocs and Gators lends itself to being camouflaged by their environment. This makes it easier for them to silently ambush their prey. Also demonstrating surprising quickness on land despite their low bulky bodies.
A group of new high school grads go on a celebratory road trip south toward the swamps. There is already a great deal of tension before the journey even starts as everyone does not like each other. It keeps getting progressively worse as their circumstances become more perilous. Then enters the huge Croc. What follows is suspense, argumentative drama, chomping Crocs, sudden scares, deadly pursuits, and determined MCs. I found this book to be highly entertaining.
This is my first read of Julian Michael Carver and it was quite enjoyable. I love a creature feature, and giant crocs are definitely high on that list. The story itself obviously leads up to events in "Mega Croc" so it's a basic story of teens going on an adventure and sh*t goes sideways. I did have a few issues with the book:-
- putting audible noises into text. KA-THUNK or RHEEAAUUHH (apparently the noise a giant croc makes) and other such words were repetitive and just distracting and laughable.
- the dialogue between the teens, especially when chaos ensues just felt clunky and unbelievable. They repeated similar sentences as their survival journey continued. At one point, Rochelle even forgets she is being chased by a gigantic crocodile!
- again, repetitive statements - constantly saying things like "It feels like we are in a horror film" - yes, we get it, the characters sense some foreboding...but don't keep on at it.
- Perry's inner monologue was annoying. Putting text like this in a few times, fine, but it felt like there was a lot in this story.
I know i've picked a few things that bugged me BUT i did enjoy the story overall.
This is a different look at the past and future. Never having been to the Everglades, I was fascinated by the author's descriptions of the Florida Everglades. He did a good job of the visualization of this part of Florida. I enjoyed the storyline and hope for more books like this.
Carver does it again with his monster franchise! Origins is a short read that will keep you on the edge of your seat, flipping the pages feverishly. His attention to Everglades and creature detail sucks the reader in and makes him or her feel like he or she is truly in the Everglades, facing off the horrifying croc!
This was actually a pretty good monster story with cartoonist versions of various noises. KA-THUNK! and RHEEEAAUUH! occur on a regular basis, that last word a description of a crocodilian roar. A thesaurus would have been useful when writing this story...
Very good writing skills. Characters well defined and developed. Plot and storyline plausible. Action, suspense and graphic violence and gore filled the pages from beginning to end. Will definitely read the main story
Excellent creature feature. Several teens graduated and go out to the Florida swamps to party a little. What follows is tense. The story holds together well.
I never liked the horror movies where all the characters end up getting killed. Unfortunately this book ended the same way. Makes me leery of reading MagaCroc.
