Keep Your Hands to Yourself!

There's one simple rule at the Jook Joint, if you don't follow it you'll pay with your life. This was an excellent second issue and I loved the essay Aftermath at the end. Can't wait until December for Issue 3.

Have I mentioned that I love that Jook Joint gives a graphic warning before the start of each issue? The creative team is so aware of the intense and triggering nature of their themes. They also know the impact the subject matter can have. I respect their warning, as well as the small resource list they included below.
This issue felt mostly like it was continuing to establish the world of Jook Joint. We have a better feeling for the characters now, how strictly they regard their own rules, how fiercely they protect others, things like that. With a series like this one I feel it is terribly important to get a good understanding of the main characters. There was also a revelation about the main character and the ladies she aids. I can honestly tell you that I wasn’t expecting it…but that makes it even better.

The story continues with Mahalia reigning as a centuries-old "magic woman" righting the wrongs of those harming women, children, and some men. We see start on a project for a local woman while taking care of some homophobic men foolish enough to make her sirens' acquaintance.

The series continues as a horrifying, beautiful, and terrifying look at the power of one special woman with secrets to behold.

5/5

I will not be reading this further. The premise is something I would definitely find engaging but the execution falls flat. The writing is very pompous, it thinks it's saying really important things while to me they really felt like platitudes.

Dialogues and characters are stunted and unrealistic. The revenge theme is supposed to be empowering but seems dumb to me. Everything is extreme to the point of parody: torture three men for planning to beat up a gay man? Personally I don't think this is justice, it's not even a satisfying revenge fantasy for me.

Also the scenes of naked women making out while spouting exposition are completely ridiculous. I must really dislike this comic if it's making me speak against a sapphic scene.

I really enjoy the premise of Jook Joint thus far: A ageless madam and her coven of sirens lure evil-hearted men and dish out sweet and vicious vengeance. And when a new "customer' of sorts Heloise offers up her abusive husband for judgment, we wonder if she will follow his trial by fire to the end.

This is good stuff. But where I feel Jook Joint suffers a little bit is in the dialogue. I struggled to separate the different women's voices from each other. They all seem a little like clones of each other. Its enough to bring it down a little, but we will see ultimately how low.

I'm getting really into this story. Seeing some good build-up and I definitely want to keep reading! But I can't. Because this series has been canceled . I could not find any definitive reason for the cancelation of the Jook Joint series. If I had to hazard a guess I'd say that it's probably due to the reliance on abused women of color exacting horrific revenge on the men committing rape and murder against them triggering material in the subject matter.

Note: I'm not sure why Goodreads only shows the Kindle version of these comics. I have the physical copies and my cover for issue 2 doesn't match the one shown. It's not a big deal at all, but just something I noticed and wanted to point out.

Anywho, this issue has officially got me hooked. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Great follow up to the first issue! Didn't disappoint. I'm definitely interested in keeping up with the this series. I also liked the extra mini therapy story premise "Aftermath" at the end.

I want more

Very interesting. So sad to see when the mom ran asking to release her husband. Poor thing used to the abuse.
