The Copenhagen Conspiracy: A novel of murder, mystery, and quantum physics

Rate this book
Failed physicist turned private investigator Mark Hannigan is summoned to Copenhagen to investigate the murder of a quantum physicist. But the case is full of strange twists - the crime was set up to imitate the famous Schrodinger’s Cat experiment, and the lab where it happened is owned by Elsinore Instruments, a shadowy international corporation whose employees seem determined not to let Mark get too close to the truth. Mark’s investigation will uncover dangerous secrets stretching all the way back to the second world war and the birth of quantum physics. And when Mark stumbles on a plot to unleash a fearsome new power on Copenhagen, the race is on to reveal the truth about Elsinore Instruments before it’s too late.

I loved this book! What happens when a murder mystery meets quantum physics and (literally) explosive action? E. Barnes has brought the ultimate thriller to all of us nerds out here. The Copenhagen Conspiracy is the perfect blend of science, technology, danger, and a race to beat the clock.
When Mark Hannigan, a current private investigator and former physicist, accepts a job investigating the mysterious death of a scientist at the elite and elusive Elsinore Instruments that emanates the essence of Schrodinger’s Cat, the real motive behind the murder will literally rock the world. In tandem with Mark’s probing emerges Cleo Brookson, a Colorado native who has come to Denmark to get away from her past life. As she begins to intertwine herself in the social circle of Elsinore students, her mission becomes entangled with Mark’s and they must work together to solve the mystery and uncover Elsinore’s deep and dark secrets that go back decades. Betrayal and revelations encompass the characters of The Copenhagen Conspiracy from beginning to end.
As a total nerd myself, I immediately signed up to read and review this book as soon as I read the synopsis. Barnes shows an awesome attention to detail and knowledge of the subjects in which he incorporated into The Copenhagen Conspiracy and it’s a breath of fresh air in a world of sometimes medial research some authors use. This story comes off as completely authentic with relatable characters and vividly engaging action scenes. Bringing together a science like quantum physics that most of the general public knows virtually nothing about into a murder mystery/thriller is executed beautifully in this book and people of all scientific literacy levels will thoroughly enjoy it. From Einstein’s death to the classified transcripts between famed physicists Heisenberg and Bohr, Barnes presents an easily believable story that will entrance you till the last page. It’s hard to find scientifically intricate novels that don’t result in a plot hole here and there, but The Copenhagen Conspiracy is one of those diamonds in the rough. Books like this one are exactly why I was so eager to become a Reedsy Reviewer and why I love doing it so much. I can’t wait to read more of Barnes’s work and highly recommend this exhilarating novel of science, murder, pain, and defiance against supposedly untouchable corporations. If you love an exciting and sophisticated thriller that holds real world realism within its core, read The Copenhagen Conspiracy. You won’t be disappointed!
