No Ordinary Day #2

No Ordinary Getaway

Rate this book
Can you ever trust a man hired to kill you?

Emma survived the collapse of the power grid, chaos in a sporting goods store, and a run in with the wrong end of a shotgun. But nothing prepares her for discovering that she’s trusted the wrong man.

Does the past determine our future?

John turned his back on everything he knew to keep Emma alive. If he fails to complete the job, it’s only a matter of time before more hitmen come their way. But this time, they’ll be gunning for him, too.

The apocalypse makes strange bedfellows.

With chaos unfolding all around them, Emma, John, and their friends are forced to flee. It’s a race against technology, tenacity, and time. Not everyone will make it out unscathed.

The EMP is only the beginning.

No Ordinary Getaway is book two in the No Ordinary Day series, a post-apocalyptic thriller series following ordinary people struggling to survive when an EMP plunges the United States into chaos.

I'm struggling with how I feel about the series and book in general. I tend to like post-apocalyptic fiction when it tells the story about how people survive and even thrive after a disaster. This is a assassin-chase thriller that just happens to be taking place during an EMP/Grid down scenario. I struggle with John who is not a good guy despite his change of heart. He is a guy who remonstrates with Raymond for not liking Nick just because Nick tried to kill Raymond's wife. Why on earth would Emma or Gloria even trust the reformed John? Emma is one of those rather clueless types that always seem to survive the apocalypse. There are also some editing issues. Holly's name becomes Holy and then Holly again. "He yanked the riffle" instead of a rifle. I seem to remember in the first book Zach, Holly's father, was a widower, but in this book Holly has a mother who hasn't wanted to see her. John was in and out of foster care before joining the military in the first book, but in this one, he joins just after his mom's death. May seem minor to some, but this disregard for continuity bothers me and spoils this enough that I am not certain that I will continue.

Too many mistakes

This series has too many mistakes performed by the characters in the story to be realistic. They know men are out to kill them but they keep encountering them, taking their weapons, but not killing turn. It doesn't make sense to encounter your potential killer and leave him alive. Also, every time they take a weapon away from any bad guy, they don't bother to even look for more ammo for the retrieved weapon. They only have the cartridges in the weapon and when that's gone, they can't reload. You would think John, at least, would know to look for extra ammo. And why would Raymond and Gloria let the first two thieves take half their food in the first place? They just let them leave with all that food! And, when they were trying to get food supplies, they kept buying cases of soup; one of the least filling foods to have for emergencies.

Very slow

Dislike: pace of the storyline. I’m so confused on what John and Emma think of each other (so far…not much). There isn’t even a spark suggesting his dedication to Emma’s safety and protection.
Like: my hope for the next book in series. I hope this story gets better (my opinion). I’ve been using this as my night time reading and it has been doing a great job making me sleepy. Which is actually a good thing for me…haha)

Please take with a grain of salt, because I have liked the other Harley Tate books. This story just doesn’t mesh for me.

Major inconsistencies

I like the storyline, but the major inconsistencies in the plot are making me crazy. In the first book, Holly & John were both orphans, but in this book they aren’t. I won’t spoil the story by talking about specifics, but an author should be able to remember the difference between one of their major characters having a good but dead mom and an alive but terrible one!

Great suspense

This is no ordinary EMP story. There is great suspense that increases as the book develops. The relationships between characters are very realistic and develop or change throughout. Holly’s mum is a surprise! Raymond is a stubborn man who loves his wife above all else. I think John is a good man. I could go on but really just need to say this is an excellent series and should be read. Try it!

Some people can just write

Tate is one of the people who have a gift. This is the most unique apocalypse story I’ve ever read and I’ve read dozens. A hit man is after the two women. A lovely teenager has a hateful mother, the country has sustained an EMP but we don’t know how. It’s a mystery. It’s a thriller. It’s. Powerful.

Running towards hope

Emma is facing some unique challenges but learning from John how to defend herself is going to be key to her survival. Really enjoying the characters and hoping Raymond will learn to accept if not respect John for trying to save them from the ruthless killers hunting them down. Looking forward to the last installment

Good read , kind of like a romance novel but no sex.

I like the book It was pretty good 1 thing I found That told me out of The book headspace Was that when Emma put her hand on her revolvers grip, she said hilt, like a sword, took me right out of the book head space. I get the internal struggling but someone needs to made a decision and talk about some thoughts sometimes soon

I like the book. 2nd in a series of 3. Interesting and really made me not want to put my book (kindle) down. The writer's only flaw was the writer thinking a shotgun fires a bullet. It can fire a slug but the author should have explained if that was the case. I am reading the last book and I need to get back to it. I do recommend this series.

Great 2nd book

Writing reviews on individual books in a series is really difficult.  It's hard to come up with something new to say. What I can say is this, the books in this series are really good and I'm definitely sticking around for what's to come.

Story starts off with John giving a totally different backstory than in book 1, this time he didnt grow up in foster care. Then the whole thing is about evading the assassins! While the world falls apart. So stupid!

EMP, government coverups or personal vendettas would be enough trouble for one book, but combine all three and you get a page turner making you want the next of the series in your hands!
