Harry Starke is at it again… So are his enemies. Backlash is an action-packed, high-intensity crime fiction thriller that will keep you turning the pages. Kidnapping. Murder. Revenge… The world around him is full of misdeeds and misfortune. It’s an all or nothing battle that Harry must win… or die.
Blair C. Howard is a Royal Air Force veteran, a retired journalist, and the best-selling author of more than 50 novels, including the international best-selling Harry Starke series, and 23 travel books. In 2021, having been fascinated by the heavens almost from childhood, and a SciFi fan for almost as long, he decided to try his hand at writing a military space opera. His first journey into this genre resulted in the Sovereign Stars series. Book 1 in the series, Avenger was quickly followed by Gods of War and Armored Fleet.
Blair lives in East Tennessee with his wife Jo, and Jack Russell Terrier, Sally.
This is book fifteen of The Harry Starke series and sees Harry not quite himself and with those close to him believing he needs to see someone, as he might be suffering from PTSD, after nearly losing his wife Amanda when she was heavily pregnant with their daughter Jade. Jade is now a year old, but Harry is getting the shakes and still having nightmares about Shady, the person responsible, who is supposedly in Witness Protection, but who is plotting his revenge against Harry for actions against him many years ago. Talk about a grudge being kept for a long time! He is even wondering if he should retire from his investigation business, having lost a few important people from his team, who left for other opportunities. But Harry is the sort of person who needs to keep busy and find his work challenging, not that he really even needs to have a job, but he isn’t the type to just sit around doing nothing!
Jacque is now his business partner and PA, basically running and organizing everything around him, and brings in a woman who want sot hire him in particular, for a case of repeated thefts of money from an old safe in her office. Ms Jay Coin runs a modelling agency, but Harry gets an odd feeling about her and that something isn’t quite right about her story. Why she wants Harry to carry out the investigation himself, seems a bit strange and he sends one of his investigators instead. It looks like se is after him for some reason, or for someone else, and Harry has far too many enemies from his past, to be able to pinpoint anyone in particular. He reckons he is being followed on more than one occasion, but worries that maybe that is his paranoia or PTSD talking. He, his team and especially is family could be in danger from whoever is after revenge. Someone is using threats, kidnapping and an explosion to get at him and he can’t face putting Amanda and his daughter in danger again.
He needs to call in some favours with his latest recruit, a previously homeless Vietnam Veteran, TJ Bron, who Kate first came across during a murder case, and some old pals of him with particular skills. Kate can only give him limited assistance, but this time it may be more than her chief will allow and her aid with police facilities comes to an abrupt end. Harry has known Kate for far too long for this to be the end, and it seems the threat against him and those he loves may not be at an end, even after the major player is taken out. There may well be more to come and the game may still be in play. What that end game will be and who is ultimately behind this sudden backlash against Harry, is anyone’s guess. What will be coming next, I can’t wait to see. Each case Harry and the gang get involved with, is never simple and always leads to something much more complicated and even dangerous. How much more Harry can put those around him through, is getting close to the edge, and maybe more than he can manage himself either. Never a dull moment in this series or the accompanying ones, as Harry battles for what is right! I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
What an exciting book to read! I was filled with so many emotions as I read this book - perhaps the strongest was the pull to find out what was on the next page. I read it so fast that I had to read it again to enjoy it again! It is rare that I reread a book before reviewing it - I save that for books that affect me in multiple ways.
If you are new to Harry Stark, he is a complex man. Harry easily becomes like a good friend that is not perfect but is special in the important ways a good friend is. He is strong in character and pushes forward when others might go the other way. He is loyal to family and friends and tries to maintain focus under extreme stress.
I was given this incredible book to read and review. Harry is Special. I Highly Recommend this book to you! This book reads easily as a stand alone book HOWEVER I have two suggestions for you. First, I invite you to join me in getting and reading about Harry from the beginning while we wait for the next book entitled AFTERMATH to come out. My Second Suggestion is that you pick up several Harry Stark books by Blair Howard as gifts for friends and/or family members that enjoy a good mystery written by an author who is gifted creating word pictures. The books would make wonderful gifts for Birthdays, Graduation, Father’s Day and even as Christmas presents!
Astounding & Brilliant. What a brilliant, brilliant book. Yet again it kept you turning the pages and I just love all the characters but of course Harry. The story starts with Harry asked to take on a strange case of money being stolen but only small amounts from a safe of Jay Coin a owner of a modeling agency. Something seems strange albeit Harry takes it on and soon he justifies his concerns when he is followed and he feels he has to protect his wife Amanda and daughter Jade. Enters Maria Boylan a former agent for Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms who was dismissed under some circumstance? On top of this an old foe and enemy raises his ugly head and with his previous threats of I’ll get you and have my revenge Harry still in his mind. Without giving too much away you have an incredibly fast well written tight action thriller that keeps you up very late. “I advise you settle down early with lots of things to nibble and drink as you won’t be able to put this down!” You have all the usual Harry and his team being TJ, Tim Jacque a touch of Kate and some old friends. Oh some surprises around Jacque, Harry state of mind and health and a decision on his future and his Investigation firm. “I can’t wait for more Harry and Blair’s books as such great reads!”
In this latest story, Harry is having issues with keeping his hands steady and also having nightmares. This all seems to go back when Amanda was forced off the road. He has even gotten to the point where he was ready to give up his business, but his wife talked him out of it. Harry had decided to stay out of issues that might be combative. This last one was supposed to be a piece of cake, a simple stakeout, but in the end it became physical.
Harry and Amanda, his wife, received a gift card for free massages and Amanda made an appointment for Harry to take advantage. When Harry was going to his appointment, he thought he might be followed. He also was asked by a new client to check out who was robbing her. In both instances his gut told him something was wrong and it was usually right.
He was eventually able to find out that it was right and would result in he and his employees coming under attack.
To discover who and what the reason was for these attacks were, what the attacks consisted of and who Maria was to Harry, then you must read this book. You won't be disappointed. There is a great deal of action.
Harry Starke has been having a tough time since his wife was almost killed a year ago. Will he ever be the same again. Both his family and team know he’s not been the same since but he’s decided to do what he must and get back to work. Then a number of things start to happen and he knows it has to be one of his old adversaries. The trouble is just who is it? he has so many. By the time he worKs out who it must be, he’s seriously concerned but he’s never let anything slide before and he’s not going to start now. Kate is not so available these days but does what she can. Unfortunately his adversary has cleverly decided to target his family and team using third parties to confuse matters and things are getting serious. Is this the time he’s going to lose? You’re going to have to read the book to find out. This is a fast paced thriller that has you rooting for Harry but never before have I been so concerned for him and his team. I received an ARC in return for an honest review. This is a super read. I was not disappointed.
Harry Starke is a five star kind of guy. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend another couple of days with him. I Voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. I was surprised and delighted to see young Tim, Harry's computer geek, take charge of much of the investigation in this case. Shady character, Shady Tree, caused a lot of angst and sweaty palms as he squared off against Starke and his crew. Were those heart palpitations caused by this book or did I forget to take my medication? Like always, Kate is present to tie up some loose ends and keep Harry out of jail. She is concerned about his well-being because he appears to be suffering from PTSD. All of his friends and coworkers think he is too. This open a whole new area to pursue about Harry in future books. It could also influence his decisions on the kind of cases he will take in the next few books. Harry's wife and child added a lot to this book. His love for them is an unexpected diversion from his typical risk taking behavior and failure to be as cautious as he should be.
It’s been a long time since Howard has released a book centered on Harry Starke’s current life with his wife, Amanda, and baby daughter, Jade. I actually felt that I was a visitor to their home after having been away for a long time, and I was so happy to see these people I had missed. The book begins with Harry feeling a bit out of sorts, even to the point that he suspects he might have some form of PTSD, since he would find his hands shaking for no apparent reason. It’s interesting how the author was able to make the reader reflect Harry’s emotions. I felt a little out of sorts trying to get back into his state of mind after everything that had happened in his previous two books-Apocalypse and Aftermath. With a book like this, it’s hard to do an adequate job reviewing it without adding “spoilers.” And spoilers would ruin the suspense in this book because everything that happens is one surprise after another. So, all I will say is that this book will capture your interest from start to finish. I can’t wait for the next one!
This is probably the most complex and fascinating book in this brilliant series so far. Harry Starke has always been fearless and decisive, but following the near death of his wife a year ago, whilst she was pregnant has left him distinctly below par, things aren't helped by other key members of his team leaving. Is he suffering from PTSD? Some of his friends think so, others doubt it. This question means that this book has a whole new dimension and makes it very readable. Of course there are still the action packed mystery investigations that we know and love from this author, the fantastic characters both on Harry's side, and those against him. There are some shocking moments which really rock Harry, old adversaries return and someone close to Harry is put in extreme danger. This really is an exciting, engaging read which pulls you in and for was a genuine page turner, I really couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. I received an advance copy of this book, but have voluntarily written this honest review.
Blair Howard writes fantastic stories. Backlash, the 15th book in The Harry Starke Novels , is just as satisfying ast the first 14. Harry, who quit the Chattanooga PD because he was feed up with the politics of the PD. He started his own investigative "force" when he opened the Harry Starke PI business. Through the years he has built a solid team that helps him in the daily activities of a top notch PI firm.
As always, Howard weaves the lives of Harry's team into each story. A little more is revealed about one or more characters in each novel. The team he has assembled could run the business without Harry, if needed. And that is the question, "Will Harry Starke remain the driving force behind Harry Starke Investigators or will his team take over.
Can Harry continue after more attempts on his life, more gun fights, And more sinister misdeeds aimed at blocking Harry from continuing to help rid Chattanooga of it's criminal element.
Read "Backlash" (The Harry Starke Novels Book 15), by Blair Howard. You will not be disappointed.
Getting even for past wrongs is raised to a new level - 4 stars
Normally private investigators are hired to prove cheating spouses. This time, while there was a brief period of employment to find who was stealing money, Harry Starke has to deal with a dissatisfied criminal. Can you imagine that Lester "Shady" Tree would hold a grudge just because Harry put a bullet into Shady's arm and, at a later time, took off a finger? Imagine the outrage.
Okay, so Shady was more than shady. He was a master criminal. He escaped an offer of Federal witness protection and continued in his search for illegally obtained wealth. Shady also proved that he was a pretty good mastermind. He organized more than a dozen bad guys to do harm to his nemesis, Harry Strake, including bombing and kidnapping.
To find out how Harry undid the fine working relationship that Harry had with the Chattanooga police, you are going to have to set aside a little time to read Backlash. Backlash is a blast! Enjoy.
It's the old team back together, with the addition of a nanny for baby Jade. The fact nanny, Maria is ex forces, military trained and has been doing personal bodyguard work is no coincidence. Harry, the solo hero, has recognised that he is Harry, the family man, and has to factor that into his decision-making. Add his team to the equation and its a fair sized family, not forgetting August & Rose. There are signs of 'Shady Tree' s influence and it turns out he never made it to witness protection - surprise, surprise. A model agency and escort service requested Harry's help, but he smells a rat. Other things tweak Harry's gut, second sight, whatever you call it - he knows not to ignore it. Then a big box is delivered to his offices, a couple of hours later no offices - big box of C4. Missing staff and a challenge. As usual the storytelling and delivery are superb.
BACKLASH.......Blair.Howard # 13. Harry Starke Harry’s attention for the mundane was that of a lemon if he quit doing his job. When old adversaries come after his family and team Is Lester ‘Shady’ Tree. behind it. A client who wants Harry to handle her request personally, what’s her real motive. Gift card for massages, who sent, and to come outside seeing his car with 4 slashed tires. Someone is using them as pawns to get to him. Concerned about Amanda and Jade when not at home, hired a nanny who will be a bodyguard also. A story more about Harry, how he’s handling almost losing Amanda a year ago. His gut feeling with a case that doesn’t sound right, finding the real motive. The story draws you in as you visit with them, and what is going on in their lives, full of adventure, and fast paced to the end. Given Arc for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
Harry is tired, thinking of quitting, but there is always one more case, isn’t there? To make matters worse, Harry may be suffering from PTSD. He’s having nightmares, jumping to conclusions, his hands are shaking at times, and something is nagging at him constantly. When a modeling agency calls with a strange problem and asks for Harry specifically, his caution meter flares. What is going on?
Blair Howard has written the best Harry Stark novel ever, a mystery within a mystery filled with emotion. Once I started reading I was reluctant to put the book down, so at 2:00 in the morning I closed the book, having just finished reading the last page. Backlash is a must read if you are a Harry Stark fan, or if you just want to read an exciting, non-stop action novel. I received an advance copy to read, this is my honest review.
Book 15 in the series finds Harry worried about keeping his family safe. His wife, Amanda, is almost completely recovered from her car crash, and baby Jade is healthy and happy! Putting his priority on his family has Harry considering ending his PI days, but Amanda talks him out of it. His next case looks like an easy one, but held some nasty surprises! Someone is following him and he has his suspicions about who in his past might want revenge. What follows is a very fast-paced and exciting race! Once again we see Kate helping out. This is a difficult book to put down once you start reading, and like all the Harry Stark novels the plot and action is top notch! I am on Blair Howard’s advance team and am always thrilled to get the newest book. I enjoy writing reviews because the books are so well written!
If you enjoy a fast-paced, action-packed whodunit, then you will love this series! P.I. Investigator Harry Starke is a rough ‘n’ ready guy with a soft spot in his heart for all those he cares about, and therefore, will go to any lengths to protect them. His past holds many ‘incidents’ including enough near-death escapes to make you believe he’s got nine lives, like the toughest alley cat in the neighborhood and beyond. Now in Backlash, his past is coming back to haunt him, but he’s willing to face up to whatever and whoever has decided to return and hunt him down. I like that Harry has an excellent support team, wise, strong and steadfast friends and a loving family. And they are all wrapped up in this well-written nail biter you won’t want to put down. My honest opinion, 5 Stars and I highly recommend!
Private Investigator Harry Starke and crew are back in yet another nail biting adventure. Once again, you will be enthralled by the characters you know and love, and horrified by some old enemies you love to hate. The Harry Starke books, this one included, are all page turners. Loads of action, and a killer storyline make Backlash yet another fantastic read. If you’ve been following the series, you will definitely find scenes which make you angry, scenes which make you smile, even scenes which will make you cry. You certainly will not be disappointed in the story. Author Blair Howard brings Harry and his entire “family” to life with incredible descriptions. I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. Fairly and honestly, a GREAT read.
Once again the crisp, clean writing style of Blair Howard makes reading another pisode in the Harry sharks story a true delight. The action is truly non-stop as Harry and his crew deal with surprising twists and seemingly insurmountable odds. Each of the familiar family of the Harry Starke novels' characters and the new ones added just for this story are clearly defined and ones to which the readers can easily relate, and the storyline is so compelling this book is very hard to put down! I always avoid reiterating a storyline in a review because I feel it takes away from the new readers' enjoyment. However, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Backlash and recommend it as a delightful mystery and action read. The book is great!
This story starts with getting offered a strange job about money missing from a safe in the office of Jay Coin a modeling agent the amounts are quite small. He is not sure about the job as it does not quite add up but take a it anyway. When visiting the office of Jay Coin he take a member of team with for backup.
Harry is having issue with his hands shaking after his wife was forced off the road and nearly losing their unborn child. All.members of the team can see that Harry is having some problems.
The Case turns out quite different from what he expected and there are some surprising twists to the plot.
Highly recommend this book Harry Starke team plus Kate at their best.
JUST WOW! Three months after Amanda, pregnant with Jade, near death accident Harry and family are finally moved back into their home trying to move on. Harry’s hands are shaking and some have told him he’s suffering from PTSD and needs to get help. He knows something is off, but deed down you just have to trust your gut. It has not let him down before.Harry hires a bodyguard/nanny to protect his family and starts looking for answers. The rest is a none stop fast passed roller coaster ride with twists and turns that will keep you up late into the night. This is the book I have been waiting for and it doesn’t disappoint. A great addition to this series.
Action packed, thrilling return of old friends Like hugging your friends and family after lockdown, Backlash was a very welcome return of Harry, Amanda and the team. Such a delight to catch up with what has been happening to them all since the traumatic events of the last book. Life just can’t seem to settle down for Harry and it’s not long before his enemies are causing problems for him and endangering the lives of not only Harry but his loved ones too. So settle down for the rollercoaster ride and tell the family they are on their own until you have finished this book. You will not want to put it down. So great to have Harry and the team back. Cant wait for the next book.
Backlash (The Harry Starke Novels Book 15), my twenty-ninth read from author Blair Howard. Imagine my surprise when in reading this I discovered that I hadn't read a Harry Starke book since October of last year and that I'd somehow missed 7 books whose storyline affected this book. Oh well, soldier on, finish this book then go back & catch up. Well-written and enjoyable, edge-of-your-seat thriller fiction, a genre I find myself leaning towards. I look forward to his next book no matter the main character, in this case, my next read is Calypso (Harry Starke #8). (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Every time I read one of Blair Howard's books I'm amazed that he can come up with such great story lines. And his writing isn't contrived or filled with stuff and fluff. Just a good on the edge of your seat read. Every time I think it can't be better than the last one and he surprises me again with a great story and believable characters. Some new some old but all interesting. If you want some good crime mysteries and action I highly recommend all of his books. I can't wait for the next one.... Especially after this Cliff hanger ending.
Does Harry Starke have PTSD? What he certainly does have is an enemy who carries a grudge from many years ago. Somehow even the most mundane of Harry’s jobs become complicated. In this action packed thriller, we see Harry, Amanda and Jade settling in to life as a family. I love the characters who have been around for a while and the new ones introduced here. There are many emotions roiling around in this story. I had to stop at one point to grab tissues. Not what I expected in this page turner. It’s a roller coaster of twists, turns and loop de loops. A thrilling ride!
This is the first book I've read by Blair Howard and as I've learned the "famous" Harry Starke. I must say I'm hooked, I've already started a second book. I've got to find out more about this Kate character and I think I'm going to like her. This book started with a number of questions and maybe even worries floating around in Harry's mind. A lot of them get taken care of throughout the story but the book ends with a new question that will haunt Harry and his readers until the next book is written. We will just have to wait and see where Harry takes us next.
I read some of the earlier Harry Stark series and enjoyed them very much, but eventually I lost track of them. Recently I was given a copy of Backlash in exchange for my honest review and this is it! I LOVED this book! Full of adventure, suspense, mystery, and twists and turns to get and hold your interest all the way to the end! The characters are very real and likeable and you find yourself rooting for them. Even though it is #15 in the series, it also stands up on its own. Get it! Read it! You'll love it!
Another great Harry Starke novel with plenty of suspense. Harry gets a new client who was insistent that he be involved. However, something is off with the case and he can't quite put his finger on it. Then a white SUV starts showing up. As if that wasn't enough, his hands have been trembling and other people are starting to notice. Is this a sign that he needs a vacation or does he have a medical condition? Along the way to solving his case, Harry relies on his intuition along with his team. This is a fast paced story with plenty of twists that will keep you engaged until the end.
In this book we see a vulnerable Harry. He is concerned for the safety of his wife and daughter and thinking maybe it is time to hang it up. Then someone from his past returns with a couple of old cases involved. Harry has no choice but to take it on. It is win or be killed. This book had me on the edge of my seat and I read it in one sitting. I love Harry Starke and the other great characters in this series, and I love Mr Howard's style of writing. Please keep them coming! Thanks to the author for allowing me to read an early copy.
This was an entertaining thriller as always with a few twists and turns along the way. The story starts off well with a client engaging Harry to look into some petty theft at her work. However, things take a turn for the worse when she is found murdered. The rest of the book follows Harry as he tries to unravel the mystery among other things with the help of his trusted friends. It was an interesting read with a good storyline. I received a free copy of the book and this is my voluntary and honest review.
Book #15 in the Harry Starke series is another exciting adventure. An old enemy returns, Harry is undecided about continuing his PI business, he’s dealing with symptoms of PTSD and Amanda’s near death experience a year ago. There’s a bombing, a kidnapping, lots of action and suspense, so much drama. This series is awesome and this particular addition was especially satisfying for me because, well I can’t say why. You’ll just have to read it to find out!! *This honest review is based on a complimentary copy from the author*
