The Yorkshire author writes crime stories about Detective Inspector Michael Angel who lives a fairly happy existence with his wife Mary in the town of Bromersley in South Yorkshire.
I agree with some of the poor reviews that there are inconsistencies, and a lot of similes, BUT overall I have thoroughly enjoyed all the Michael Angel books that I have read so far (Books 1 to 14 read, and just ordered books 15 to 21). As I read the books, I came to terms with the way that the author writes, which is in a fairly individual style, and overall I really enjoyed the whole series. As I read quite quickly, I have read the first 14 books consecutively, and found that as I finished one book, I immediately wanted to start the next. These are straight forward ‘Policeman solves crime’ novels, with no deep, insightful psychological analysis or subplots involving romantic trysts or family crises - easy to read, but hard to put down
UNfortunately I didn't enjoy these books as much as I had expected. Not only did Michael Angel keep rushing here and there - very rarely he dashed, but he never seemed to hurry, or stride, or even run - but there was a sad lack of knowledge of police procedure and information available. For instance in one book a bullet is taken from a body, but it is noted that as this was fired from a very commonly found gun it would not be possible to identify the exact weapon. Of course, it is well known that each gun has a different rifling mark that is left on a bullet, so they can be identified as easily as a fingerprint. Similar errors were only too common, so the books lacked credibility. A shame, because the plots were good and the stories could have been really enjoyable were they better written.
I am enjoying this series very much. Entertaining and an easy read. Very interesting cases and plot twists that have kept my interest to the end of the book. I will keep reading as long as Roger Silverwood keeps writing?
I enjoyed this set of DI Michael Ángel stories. Roger Silverwood twists together a number of trails to which Angel has to unravel and decide which trail fits which culprit. In each case Angel establishes some facts and then relies on his "Detective" instincts to guide him to the culprit/s. Nice easy reading through my enjoyable. Could easily see Angel, Superintendent Harker, DS's Gawber & Crisp plus DC Ahmed becoming a great TV series. Worth a read
Box Set 8-14, Inspector Angel, author Roger Silverwood - These short novels (less than 300 pages) keep your interest and give a glimpse of Yorkshire, England. A nice diversion. Inspector Angel is top detective in his town. He always finds the bad guy or gal, sometimes with unusual techniques. The seven books are: 8-Missing Millionaire, 9-Missing Thief, 10-Find the Lady, 11-Missing Model, 12-Murder in Bare Feet, 13-Missing Husband, 14- Cuckoo Clock Murder. All are excellent reads. The 3rd box set 15-29 is available. I’ll be reading it next.
I absolutely love these books and adore Michael Angel. He is a gruff character that has the earned respect of everyone (except his Superintendent Harker). He solves all his cases but the last one of this box set really flummoxed him and he wasn’t 100% certain that he was going to manage it. However, as per, he gets his man (men) and lives (although only just) to crime fight another day!!
In order to do his job properly the embattled Mike Angel has to work around the incompetent, stingy boss of the Nick, Hawker. Using various subterfuge, he has built for himself the uncomfortable reputation of always getting his villain in murder cases.
A well told tale of a tenacious police officer who ultimately always gets his man.
What with cuckoo clocks, dead pigs, murder most foul, and a senior officer who is the ultimate jobsworth, he has much to contend with. And despite all the odds, he gets there in end.
Couldn't put this series down. Whenever I woke in the night my kindle was in my hand and I had to read 1 or 2 chapters. Trouble is my days are passing quickly during Covid and I really must begin to do some housework!
I’ll never tire of the antics of this Detective. Intrigue, humour, sarcasm and last but not least, successful teamwork from Detective Angels team when their cases are solved.
I found these books easy to read, well written, clever plots and hard to put down. Interesting variety of characters who made up a fascinating team. And even made me smile on a number of occasions.
I really enjoyed these books. Not too heavy or violent. I live in Wakefield so knew some of the places mentioned. I liked trying to work out the clues, not that I got many of them. I would recommend these books
Good character development. Plots develop very nicely over time. Love to this series and am continuing with the rest. Really like British crime novel and these don’t disappoint.
While the diversity of characters is refreshing the flood of details makes reading tedious. The storylines are interesting, but too easy for the reader to discern.
I have already read the first seven in the series and just finished the next seven. Good stories though the jokes weren't so bad this time but still not needed.
I loved reading both series of the Detective Angel books. Lots of twists and turns kept it interesting and enjoyable. Really liked the characters portrayed.
This series of books have been excellent, I actually read them back to back, followings the lives of the team solving the crimes has been entertaining.
Another highly entertaining and engrossing set of books in the Detective Michael Angel series. I sincerely recommend these books to anyone who enjoys a good crime mystery ++++++++++
