If you have just been diagnosed with an arthritic condition or wish to complement your treatment with home remedies, Johnson's book is a fabulous starting point! Her book is a comprehensive, well researched and inspiring guide book for natural aids to help you through your sleepless, painful and mentally exhausting journey. Her sources are sound, the list of recipes delicious (I have already tried a few) and it's great to have a book that I can leaf through and pick up for advice as and when I need it!
Very helpful and easy to read guide on how to live with arthritis and lessen its impact. The book contains various explanations of how inflammations occur, plus a range of recipes and exercises to help minimise them. I shall be using it as a kind of workbook over the next few months and hope to see an improvement to my condition.
3.5 stars. This can be a good starting place for newly-diagnosed people who are brand new to autoimmunity, arthritis, inflammation, etc. The advice is very common, largely the same as what's reported in other sources. The author shares her arthritis journey and tips that work for her; while this isn't a comprehensive guide delving deep into each topic, the author consistently reminds the reader that inflammation is different for everyone and readers may need to amend or ignore this specific piece of advice.
I wrote down a few recipes. Most look reasonable for lesser-experienced cooks, people who maybe relied a lot on packaged foods and eating out. More than a few are so simple you might wonder how many people really needed that written down for them-- a snack that's a single dried fruit and a single nut mixed in a travel container; tea that's tea leaves, hot water, and sweetener. I did write down a few but unfortunately, a lot of the main dishes incorporate a lot of soy products.
The writing style didn't work for me, but may be approachable for readers who are new to health books. A little too relaxed and friends-y made it feel unauthoritative to me. The author quotes and cites heavily from other writers and researchers-- so much so that some chapters feel like Johnson is the organizer or editor rather than the author.
This shouldn't be anyone's only resource, but could be useful for someone just starting on their journey. Readers with some experience and prior reading in this area can definitely skim the content, pick out the recipes, and not feel worried about missing critical information.
Encouraging book about how to cope and deal with rheumatic conditions through lifestyle change (diet, no alcohol, no artificial sugars, exercise/movement and proper sleep). Food, movement, sleep and sunshine are truly underappreciated natural medicines.
I was worried this would be to woo woo but it was actually quite informative and gave me some ideas on how to improve my overall health and arthritis symptoms.
Emily's first book (and hopefully it won't be her last!) is a brilliant insight into tips and well-researched processes that can assist Arthritic Pain. I don't believe it's possible to 'beat' Arthritis but rather to learn to live with it, and that's what this book teaches.
