Hirohiko Araki ( 荒木飛呂彦) is a Japanese manga artist. He left school before graduation from Miyagi University of Education.
He enjoys the baseball manga Kyojin No Hoshii (Star of the Giants); the video games Mario Kart and Bomberman; and likes Prince and other African-American singers, as well as jazz, rock, and rap.
Honestly I'm not sure if this volume has come out already or not, but I've already read all its chapters so that's why I'm saying I read it already. Araki-sensei has blown my mind with Jojolion ever since the very first chapter, and apparently he'll continue to do so.
As the last 2 volumes have finally been released in colour by Shueisha (after a 1.5 years hiatus) I had to reread them. Gotta say, some nice colour choices overall, and this volume has some gorgeous panels with Wonder Of U and Josuke, also great drawings of Soft & Wet, and my dearly missed inventive panelling choices that Araki is known for!
Really enjoyed the colour scheme they've gone for Wonder Of U. In addition, with this version the hospital scenes are much easier to read. They have a ton of clutter and destruction, and in black and white it took some effort to figure out what went where. Here they flow seamlessly.
Looking back on the series as a whole, I think the villains have a recurring theme to them. Maybe with the exception of Phantom Blood (which is different in so many aspects anyway), it always feels like Araki builds up a villain impossible to defeat (or even understand in some cases). And because they're so hyped up and explained, when they do get defeated it doesn't live up to expectations. It often feels like the narrative pulled some deus ex machina, or the whole resolution just feels kinda bogus.
But everything else in the story is so good that this doesn't bother me. After a volcano, a "we have the same stand", an ambulance, an insane nullification power up, and so on, you have to be expecting this kind of villain defeat going into a new part. The ending scenes with the Higashikata family and the tie-in with the series theme was superb, and I can't wait to find out if we're gonna see more of Joseph in the next part.
Penultimate volume, imma take this time to say a few notes on my time wiv jojolion: AHHGH MAFUCKENURAGHHHHH. This story has been so much fucking fun, araki is amazing at body amalgamation and reading it in colour has really helped in showing the energy of this story. This moment I've been anticipating since the start of lockdown, and jesus it has been an amazing adventure. I'm so in love with the energy araki places in his worlds, his power system of the stands, and how closely linked the powers are to the personality of the characters. And the mystery!!! Part 8 has been such a gripping story, really pulling me to read more in a way other manga does through just violence, where this is wiv absolute insanity. It's a bittersweet moment that my time wiv jojo is coming to an end, UNTIL I READ THE FIRST CHAPTER OF PART 9 😈
this. is. perfect. josuke and yashou team up BASCIALLY and start fucking up toru. and Soft and Wet Go Beyond??? yeah that's peak. this part is so good. CINEMA.
What is there to say on Jojolion. The final fight? The stands? The gruesome and bizarre adventure of Josuke Higashikata? Well a lot actually...
Jojolion is my favorite part as of completing it (minus the final issue due in August), and my journey with it is rather short in comparison to others. Since it has run for around a decade now, starting in 2011, I feel many long-time readers have grown tired of the part--I only started reading last year and re-read the entire thing in a day. So it's fair to say I consumed Jojolion more like a slow-paced graphic novel than a full serialized manga. I don't think that has any bearing on the review though, but just a little detail.
Upon meeting Josuke for the first time, I had fell in love with the character. His introduction is amazing and great storytelling, in fact i'd say chapter #1 of Jojolion is the best opening chapter of the entire series. It builds suspenses, raises questions, and grabs the readers attention with not only all these but an almost childish sense of humor. Jojo's is "bizarre" afterall. Its wackiness is always delightful and oftentimes immature, but always endearing. The whole "4 balls" thing had me genuinely hooked as well as amused, which was honestly a wonderful feeling.
Traveling with Josuke in Morioh felt like an adventure. It had many stops along the way, sure, but in the end was still fun. The whole theme of "ending curses" is actually well done when kept in mind during the narrative. Josuke is a character born from the desire to save a family member from a terminal condition, who in his journey to fight for his mother helps a family break an intergenerational curse that kills their firstborn each generation. In this he fights a group of "rock-humans" who use the cure to both their ailments for profit, who seemingly control fate, yet are brought down by a human... The arc is not only satisfying, but also very optimistic about human nature. Araki's optimism and humor always make the series.
The stands are amazing though at times can be confusing. The issue with manga is generally the conveyance of movement and complex information. Many of these stands are complicated, so visual explanation doesn't always do it for me, but the stand battles are fun and still a good read. Soft and Wet is probably the most powerful stand in the series (minus G.E.R.) and is used in many creative ways.
Overall the whole experience is a 10/10, 5/5, and whatnot. I love Josuke and, like Araki, wish him happiness!

I really loved when Josuke went go beyond in front of wonder of u and love when he managed to hit tooru with soft and wet go beyond through paisley park and yashuo’s phone. Sadden to see that part 8 is wrapping up but part 8 is hands down my favorite part of the series

I was getting really sick of the Wonder of U fight so I’m glad that came to a close, and I really enjoyed the recent chapters! So sad Jojolion is coming to an end soon :( I’ll miss Gappy and Yasuho!!
