A concise and informative read on the power of journaling. It explains many common journaling techniques and the benefits of each. If you are journaling or considering it, this is a valuable book to have.
I am a big fan of writing diaries/Journals. This is why I read this book.
The author makes the difference here between a Diary: " which is the daily record of events that happened to a person in his/her day" and a Journal: " which spans from writing up thoughts and feelings to planning your day and life" . Of course, in Arabic the two terms merge into one word (Muthakarat) without much distinguishing. In this book, the author focuses on the second English definition and shows its benefits for well-being physically and mentally.
He started with a very short historical perspective talking about ancient people who recorded their journals and diaries. 2000 years ago, a Chinese man called Ma Dubo’s recorded in his diary how normal Chinese people were living, thinking, and working at such an ancient time. Similarly, Michitsuna no Haha recorded her diary in Japan around 974 AD giving the world how Japanese women lived at the time. Michitsuna no Haha recorded her emotions describing her loneliness, sadness, and her happy moments.
Of course, more famously, the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius recorded his journals in twelve volumes which are known as the "Meditation". He also mentions a guy called Samuel Pepys who recorded his daily life between 1659-1669 in which he recorded in it London Great Fire and other important historical events that happened during that period. Other historical people mentioned are Darwin, Mark Twain and Leonardo da Vinci. The author mentions that we only know some of the names mentioned above because they had recorded their diaries. Otherwise, no one would care who Ma Dubo and Michitsuna no Haha were.
The rest of the book is just talking about the benefits of Journaling and the different techniques available to do it. Among the benefits mentioned are: Reducing Stress, better sleeping, reducing anxiety and better-organized life.
I don’t know about the above-mentioned benefits… I am sure they have some truth in them, but I am sure of this...I have read about many people who regretted at a later age that they did not keep a diary for their past life. Having a diary is not very difficult these days, you can do it while you are lying before sleep on your mobile. Or you can do it using the traditional way by writing things on paper. It does not take a lot of effort but years from now your memory of the same day will be as clear as if it happened just that day. It also helps in thinking about certain problems and it may lead to finding solutions for them. It is the best way to understand yourself and to have a good self-reflection.
I do not want to talk too much here; I just want the reader of this review to be encouraged to have a diary recording his/her daily events and feelings. It is a priceless thing and does not take a lot of time. 15 minutes every day will be enough to record your entire life on paper.
Anyway, just to get back to the book… the book is OK, I found it interesting only in the first half but I lost my interest in the later chapters in which it went through the typical self-help advice.
I was really looking forward to reading this book after I saw it at a book review site. Unfortunately, as soon as I saw the table of contents, I was disappointed with its contents (or knew I would probably be). The book’s subtitle makes you think it is about how to write a journal and “unlock your true power” (whatever that means), but much of the book came across as someone's research paper on journaling. When talking about such an incredibly active process as journaling, it is somewhat disturbing that the book starts with a detailed look at the history of journaling. While that may interest some, what does that have to do with writing a journal? The author should have gotten right to the point rather than going on about the history of journaling and its value (another lengthy early chapter). Throughout the book, the author proclaims to have done much journaling and gained benefit from it, so I find it surprising that so much of the book felt like it didn't really focus on the practical how-to aspect as promised in the subtitle. All in all, I found this book disappointing.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
At 65 I thought i knew enough about myself. I've discovered I was wrong. Journaling has kept down the mental noise In my head. I've learned to let things go. Hadn't realize how much old crap I carried with me. Some stuff is over 50 years old. Even I have to laugh at the a absurdity of our all. I would encourage everyone to start journaling. This book is a great start. Good luck !!
This book gives great advice about journaling to change your life to be what you want it to be. Some of this I've heard before, some of it is new information. It is well written. I worked through the book as I read it using his advice and trying it out for myself and the journal methods provided instant emotional relief for me. I highly recommend.
First off, I found it annoying that the book did not have a table of contents at the start of the book. Second, the book covered everything that's been covered before. There were some bright spots in the book, but you had to look for them.
I’ve struggled with my writing, particularly journaling, for 20+ years as a result of someone reading my diary and weaponizing my feelings. I used to love writing and I still remember how good it felt to have a space to dump everything out. I want to write again!
