Alan MacDonald is the author of many books for children, including the bestselling Dirty Bertie series, which he worked on with award-winning illustrator David Roberts. His series Troll Trouble (Bloomsbury) has been optioned for film by Twentieth Century Fox, and Alan has also published picture book The Prince of Pants (Scholastic) with the illustrator Sarah McIntyre. When not busy with books, Alan writes for children's TV series such as Horrid Henry, The Tweenies, Boo! and Fimbles.
Sarah Horne has illustrated many hilarious children's books, including Llama United by Scott Allen (Pan Macmillan) the Fizzlebert Stump series by A.F. Harrold (Bloomsbury), the Guinea Pigs Online series by Amanda Swift and Jennifer Grey (Quercus) and Michael Rosen’s Laugh Out Loud Joke Book (Scholastic). Sarah grew up in Derbyshire and now lives in London.

Sam en Oscar zijn twee grappige karakters. Oscar is een hele speciale hond en Sam is een leuk baasje. Ook de vader van Sam is erg grappig, al vindt hij dat zelf niet. In dit boek koopt de vader van Sam een gebouw bij het strand dat hij om wil toveren tot een eethuis. Er is wel een probleem, hij kan niet koken.
Niet alleen het eethuis is een onderwerp in het boek. Ook verdwijnen er honden, Oscar en Sam zien het gebeuren en weten hoe het zit. Oscar vindt alles zo oneerlijk dat hij met een oplossing komt. Hij heeft daarbij wel hulp van Sam nodig.
Terwijl Sam en Oscar het hondvoering-probleem oplossen, zijn ze ondertussen ook nog de vader van Sam aan het helpen in het eethuis. Gelukkig heeft de moeder van Sam inmiddels ook ingegrepen.
De boeken over Sam en Oscar zijn makkelijk te lezen, hebben veel (grappige) illustraties en het verhaal is ook nog eens leuk. Ook als je niet van honden houdt, zijn deze boeken een aanrader. De drie woorden die het boek omschrijven zijn: humor, vriendschap en heldendaden. En daar ben ik het volkomen mee eens!

A second story about a boy and his talking dog.
Now we've established Oscar as a dog who can communicate with his 'human', the stories can move on and away from this secret.
Sam's inventor dad has decided to open a Toast Cafe, and gets the family involved. The town grump/dog-hater neighbour is still keen to stop them in their tracks, and with dog catchers closing in, can Sam and Oscar help Dad as well as keep the town's dogs safe?
A funny chapter book for bedtimes, we enjoyed Oscar and Sam's adventures. I enjoyed some good opportunities for silly voices (both human and dog) and it was an entertaining week of reading for us.
Dad is a father figure I've seen often in juvenile literature, a slightly bumbling figure who needs his wife to keep him on track, and Sam himself helps things along as a capable boy. It's more about the plot than the characters (and there are turns that adult readers will seem coming a mile off!).
Great series, my son already wants us to reserve the third title. Took us a week of bedtime reading to get through. For ages 6-10.

This was one of the BEST books I’ve ever read (maybe because I LOVE dogs) I hope I can find more Oscar books

Leuk, grappig avonturenverhaal met een jongen en hond in de hoofdrol. Geschikt vanaf groep 4.
