The Beacon Hill Sorcerer #5

Love Springs Eternal

Rate this book
Apprenticed to the infamous Necromancer of Boston, Daniel Macavoy has seen a lot of upheaval in his life since that fateful day. Rescued from an abusive father and the monster he was once enslaved by, Daniel has struggled with every trauma that scarred his heart and mind.

Yet with the love and support of his found family, Daniel has become stronger than he ever imagined. A capable sorcerer, he's been entrusted with the ancestral family seat of the Salvatores, the legendary site of the Massacre, the culmination of the centuries long Blood Wars between the Salvatores and the Macavoys. The huge mansion is a testament to old school magic, high sorcery, and comes with a history almost as impressive as the enigmatic fae warrior who calls the gardens home.

Rory Brennan is immortal. A member of the nearly extinct High Court Sidhe, Rory remembers when humans climbed down from trees and learned to stand upright. His long life has been spent hand in hand with his identical twin, Cian, who happens to be locked in prison, sentenced to a thousand years for heinous crimes committed while Rory slept for centuries in stasis, hovering at the edge of death. Rory wakes to a modern world after his resurrection at the hands of the Necromancer of Boston, only to lose Cian to a mortal prison.

Once worshipped as a god, Rory Brennan is learning what it means to exist in a modern mortal world. Rory finds that for the very first time, true love has found its way into his immortal heart.

Daniel and Rory grow closer, love springing to life in the narrowing space between them. Daniel has concerns about Cian, the serial killer twin brother of the man he loves, and the repeated attempts of strangers trying to break into the Mansion. He's got no idea what these strangers are after, and Rory is certain that Cian is in ever-growing danger locked up in Blackguard Prison.

With the danger increasing from all sides, Daniel and Rory struggle to balance surviving with falling in love. A dragon with a growth spurt isn't helping matters, and his mentor's watchful eye makes things both more awkward and potentially lethal.

LOVE SPRINGS ETERNAL is the fifth book in the bestselling Beacon Hill Sorcerer series and should not be read as a standalone.

This series!!!

It’s been almost two years since book four was released, but the wait time only stoked my desperation to get my grubby little hands on this book.

After four wonderful supernatural stories, most of which focused on the love story between sorcerer Angelus ‘Angel’ Salvatore and his Celtic vampire lover Simeon, it was finally time to give the spotlight to Angel’s apprentice, Daniel McAvoy, as he finally got swept up in the arms of his dreamy protector, an ancient fae warrior named Ruairí ‘Rory’ Brennan.

Daniel and Rory’s love story began the moment they met, soon after Rory was resurrected from centuries-long stasis (at the end of book two), but with Daniel still battling insecurities and overcoming past traumas, and Rory getting used to the new world as it’s come to be, their relationship was limited to innocent glances and sweet affections until the time was right for more.

I was fairly surprised when Daniel and Rory got together pretty much immediately in this story, but I guess their slow-burn and all the longing they shared already played out wonderfully in the previous books, so I didn’t mind how quickly they came together here. They remained all things sweet and adoring, sharing many tender (and steamy) moments throughout this story than made my heart explode with happiness.

Daniel and Rory made such a romantic couple, which is pretty much a given when you pair an adoring young sorcerer, who hasn’t been loved nearly as much as he has deserved in life, with an astute, calm and gentle fae, who has literally seen and lived it all, and now just wants to give all his love to the one he’s been waiting an eternity to treasure.

Beyond the romance, the story builds slowly but surely, adding bits and pieces to the already complex series plot, wherein power and control seems to be the name of the game for all the supernaturals and mortals stupid enough to try and take it from Angel and his friends, who have proven time and again to be the most powerful, formidable, and profoundly good people around, risking their lives over and over for the greater good.

For all the quieter, deeply tender moments in this story, there were equally as many moments of excitement and action to go along with it, making this a very balanced and satisfying story overall.

The romance was lovely and I enjoyed the larger plot as it unfolded, with a few chapters holding me riveted and desperate to read on. But the true strength of this series, once again, lies in the full cast of fantastic supernatural characters, including a foray of differently talented magic-wielders, powerful ancient vampires, and ethereal fae warriors of old, and, of course, the most loveable adolescent dragon imaginable, who steals scenes at every bacon-loving turn.

The cast here truly is outstanding, and because of this, I always feel completely enraptured from one story to the next, because no matter who is on page, I find myself left happy and slightly infatuated with them all.

For me, though, the standout character of this particular instalment was Rory’s twin brother, Cian, who entered the series as the bad guy a few books back, but has since morphed his way, quite miraculously, into my favourite most compelling character of the bunch, leaving me desperate to read more about this complex fae man who has so much damn story left to tell.

And as endings go, I couldn’t have been more thrilled with the events of the final chapters, opening new avenues of storytelling for this series to forge, while dangling just enough juicy reveals to the reader to ensure we all come barrelling back for more when the time comes.

If you’re a fan of urban fantasy—particularly of the M/M variety—then starting this series is a no-brainer. The release dates might try your patience at times, but I’ll be damned if each sequel hasn’t proved worth the wait. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Seriously, what I wouldn’t give to experience this series again for the first time. *chef's kiss*

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED SERIES! <3

We finally come to Daniel and Rory’s story, and it was just as romantic as I hoped it would be.

What do you need to know?

Well, if you haven’t started this series yet then you’re missing out on a top notch urban fantasy full of magic, necromancy, vamps, sorcerers, blood feuds, political machinations, the fae, and so much more.

If you have started then come on over and catch up as this brings the action, suspense, and swoon with a few happy tears to boot! Daniel is all grown up, has moved out and taken on new responsibilities as he awaits to come into his fully realized magical powers. Ever by his side is the loyal dreamy and even more powerful Rory, who is always steadfastly there to support and protect if needed. When an unknown enemy starts targeting Rory and his brother Cian, it pushes everyone into a corner, unleashing some very interesting results and repercussions.

This furthers the overall story arc of Angel and company (shout-out to the irascible Eroch!!) all of who play supporting roles in this latest entry. Himes continues to set up her various plot threads and makes one wish that she wrote that much faster as this ends with a fantastic revealing twist.

Regardless, this was worth the wait and so it will be too for the sequel!

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Very Cute; Almost Too Cute*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

Book five in this series centers around Angel Salvatore's apprentice, Daniel Macavoy (21) and his fae Ruairí ‘Rory’ Brennan (ancient). While it was better obvious from the start of Rory and Daniel meeting that they would become a couple, it was nice to see it come to pass. I like them as a couple; they are sweet, kind and loving. That's the thing though, the book was too sweet, too loving. Don't get me wrong, it's full of action but it's still so damn cute and sweet. All lovey-dovey. I absolutely LOVED seeing Angel, Simeon and our little dragon.

Towards half the book, I skimmed more than I should. It's not that it's bad, I was just a tad bored. To be frankly honest, I see this series as Angel's series, so he's got my focus. The book itself is predictable, enjoyable enough and has family moments. I love the family moments. I truly hope Cian, Rory's brother's book will be more exciting. However, this author loves to write gentle and kind love interests so I'm guessing we'll get another like that. That said, I do love Cian's more... animalistic side so it could still be more interesting. Overall, I liked it, but I was bored and I kinda just wanted Angel and his dragon. I know, I'm annoying. It was good to see Daniel finally coming into his own though.

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (Adult) Paranormal Romance (M/M)
Series: - Series, Book Five.
Love triangle? -
Cheating? -
HEA? -
Favorite character? - Angel Salvatore.
Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Sure.
Would I recommend this book/series? - Sure.
Will I read this again in the future? - Probably not.
Rating - 2.5/3 (weak) stars.

Reread via audio:
LOVED IT.
Shmoopy romantic goodness

MY GOODNESS THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING.

RL gif of me reading the book...

SJ Himes is a master worldbuilder and their take on urban fantasy has always been a favorite of mine. The lore, the pnr creatures, the secrets and the romance all came together in this book to produce their most romantic book to date IMO.

What I loved:
1. Daniel: Angel's apprentice, who was dealt a crappy hand from fate, has gone through so much from the time he was born until Angel saved him. He is bet, not broken and he grows stronger and stronger because of his found family rallying around him. From Angel and Simeon to Isaac and Constantine, he has a support system of the ages. But it is Rory, the fae, who raises him up and whose faith and love transform Daniel into a more powerful version of himself. #BetterWithYou

2. Rory: Who might as well be the swooniest swoon who has ever swooned. He might be older than dirt, as Angel would say, but seriously where can I get my own Rory? His love, devotion, power and all around being is just too good to be true. #SomeoneSpecial

3. The Plot: This book is less plot heavy. It focuses on Danny and Rory's relationship and how it progresses, which I was all for. There is suspense and action, but they were not in the spotlight here. We see Daniel growing and Rory supporting him. We also see the birth of a family, made from different creatures and mentalities, which only makes them stronger. #StrongerTogether

4. The Relationship: Did I mention the swoon? the romance? the all around loveliness of this book? I just can't. I can't encompass how beautiful these two were, how pure their love is and how they put a smile on my face even when I was also crying. Sheena... you have outdone yourself! #BarNone

5. Steam-o-meter: Steamy! Let's just say... Rory has a very unique surprise in his pants...Ahem. and Daniel takes full advantage of that fact. #SpecialAppendagesAreAllTheRage

6. Angst-o-meter: No angst between the MCs! It's all about the love in this one.
there is some outside interference but they are resolved rater quickly.
but, make sure to prepare your Kleenex for some happy tears because Sheena brought their A-Game here. #Sniffle

7. Cian: Rory's serial killer twin. Is it too early to ask for his book because #Dayum. I would love to see the character who would bring him to his knees. #WinkWink

8. The Cameos: All the gang shows up here. Angel especially is amazing, because his twinky rage is adorable and powerful at the same time. Also EROCH! His POV is just delightful! #FamilyTies

9. The Ending: THE ENDING OMG!
It's definitely an HEA for our MCs but it ends with a BIG surprise which will be tackled in book 6! #WellPlayed

I have very much enjoyed this series and this installment focuses on two side characters who are very different in temperament than Angel or his brother. Daniel has been through as much, if not more, than Isaac and Angel, but he is more gentle in many ways. This whole book is more gentle. Oh, there is plenty of action and interesting developments, but it is also about the joys of falling in love. The other books about Isaac and Angel had them fall in love but Isaac's book was a lot about his recovery and with Angel is was very much about fighting. This has so many more moments of falling in love, being on the beach together, eating dinner together, just being (and some hot sex). It reminds me of first love.

This family has grown stronger together and I love seeing how they interact. They are so much more willing to hug each other now than when they first started five books ago. There are some very interesting developments at the end that surprised me and I look forward to the next book.

Please, come out soon.

Daniel and Rory's story is such a sweet and gentle (for want of a better word) story, and so very different from our forceful Angel and tortured Isaac. But gentle and sweet is what Daniel needed to grow into the man he was meant to be.

What I need is Cian's story, methinks that one is going to be a doozy!

And yes, I really loved it all over again.
Even if I noticed a lot of crying and sobbing on Daniel's side this time. Tbh, it's not surprising considering what he's been through. Absolutely adored Rory and strangely warming to Cian. It'll be interesting to read his book, that's for sure!

original review

Wow.
I’m blown away.
This was nothing but spectacular.

To be honest, I was not 100% sure Daniel’s story would be as exciting as the rest of the series, but, boy, was I wrong!
First, the age gap - I had to chuckle when I ticked the tag. Nobody is ever going to beat the eons of years age gap between a fae, long existing before the dawn of humanity, and a 21 year old! 😂

Daniel's transformation from the first time we met him about 4 books ago to the end of this book is un-be-lievable, and his journey and personal developments beautiful and heart-warming. What fabulous events towards the end of the book! I might have sat with my mouth gaping!
And while I hoped for some developments, others were a complete surprise with SJ Himes turning the wheels of fate and fortune in the most unexpected ways.

And Rory simply left me swooning. “Steady and true, soft and calm”, sweet and fierce, compassionate and tender, he didn’t only make Daniel’s heart beat a lot faster. And his magic is just sigh-worthy and beautiful! Everything, from his ‘Mary Poppins’ treasure chest, to his affinity with nature and his creations within it is truly spell-binding. That love scene in the grass – unbelievably lovely!
There’s also definitely something to be said for sex with the touch of a little bit of magic. And yes, the Fae do have very special … appendages. Very hot, hot, hot!

I’m also amazed how the author manages to turn our feelings towards Cian, Rory’s twin, 180 degrees. Strange that you can start liking someone labelled as a ‘serial killer’.

I adore the whole Salvatore clan, and the immense power they hold all together (loved that little summary!) In this book, we see the love and care they share in such a tender and moving way. Saying that, I think Angel will always hold a special place in my heart, and I can’t wait how the shocking revelations at the end of this book will play out in book 6.

It’s difficult not to mention Eroch, not so much a baby dragon anymore, but as cute and funny as ever. I can’t wait for his first words and wonder what they will be. My guess is

Some of my most fav quotes:

“I didn’t just happen to acquire a familiar.” Angel paused, lips twitching. “I’ve been raising a baby.” (#TeamEroch)

“If you wish nothing more than to be dear friends, I’ll abide by your wishes and seize my lustful overtures.” Rory’s gaze was earnest, his words intense. “Please don’t do that, ”Daniel gasped out. “I want your lustful overtures all over me.”

Danu to Daniel: “You, my youngest child, are the shore, the threshold and the boundary, the barrier and the welcome.” (very mysterious!) :

What an absolutely brilliant series!
Hope book 6 won’t take too long to ‘materialize’.

Yes another re-read before The Necromancer’s War

Re-read 19th - 22nd September 2022

This book was amazing, I mean we always knew Daniel and Rory’s story would be sweet and beautiful. And it was but it was also so much more. We had their romance of course plus Angel and Simeon, Issac and Connie and the adorable bacon loving Eroch. And don’t get me started on Cian I’m so looking forward to his book. Then there’s the crime element as well.

A book that ticks all the boxes.

While I loved this one I’m looking forward to the next one even more and that’s saying something.

I can’t praise this enough. I mean obviously I’m a huge fan and totally biased but still.

And yes we knew who the vampire in the shop was but the way it was written the way it all came together just WOW.

Now I’m just left waiting for book 6…..

I didn't enjoy this installment quite as much as the previous ones.
1) The story didn't advance much
2) Even though there was clearly an attraction between Rory and Daniel in previous books, their relationship really felt too insta, here, with no actual development.
3) And to me Daniel seemed as young and inexperienced as he actually was.

And because of #3, I had a lot of trouble getting past #2.

Things I did really enjoy:

1) Eroch <<< He stole every single scene he was in and I never want that to change.
2) Angel <<< Bad. Ass. Necromancer.
3) Rory and Cian <<< Yeah, Cian has done some bad shit, but he's not just a bad guy. He wants to make amends.
4) That thing at the end I'm not gonna spoil. I saw it coming early on...well 2/3 of it, anyway, and I am looking forward to seeing where that goes!

Really, the only way to describe this is sweet. I feel like I've been waiting forever for this book. I've reread the series multiple times, and every time, I sooo wanted Daniel and Rory's book. I knew it would be romantic, and it was. Daniel deserves so much love, and Rory gave it to him. They're perfect together.

I'll be anxiously waiting for the next one because there are still things that need to be settled. But I really, really want Cian's book. I can't wait for that one. I just hope it doesn't take too long.

I loved that Daniel finally gets his happy ending, particularly after what he's been through, I loved getting to learn more about Rory and Cian, and I loved getting to see Angel and Isaac and everyone again...and I mean everyone. The twists and turns 'Love Springs Eternal' took kept me glued and highly annoyed when I had to put it down to work.

I cannot wait to get the next book and see how everything that's been set up so far in the series plays out.

I do not know what happened but this book was not for me. After the long wait it was not what I expected. What worked for me:

1. Eroch's POV
2. Broody Simeon my forever vampire boyfriend
3. The plot twist in the end which is kind of cliffy but I do not mind
4. Cian and everything about the dark fae Sidhe Lord (I want his story so bad)

What didn't work for me:

1. No relationship development and over the top sweetness between the MCs
2. Basically no plot
3. Lost opportunity to really expand on Sidhe Lord myth (skimmed the surface here)
4. Magical lube/$*eX (I just do not like it)
5. All the side characters were so marshmallow soft unlike how they were in their own books.

*sigh* I am disappointed I didn't like it more. First 40% dragged, then pace picked up but it read as a jumble of events that are barely connected. Hmmm, not a favorite in the series.

2.5 rounded down

This was my least favorite in the series and a little lackluster for me. Probably for a couple of reasons:

1. There was more of a gap between this book and the rest so the ~world~ wasn't as immediately in my head, and I did suffer from several moments of confusion--highly recommend reading all these books close together.

2. The relationship here was already semi-established (which happens in the earlier books) and so I just didn't feel quite as invested for some reason.

3. Because of my lack of recent memory of the previous books, it's hard for me to know for certain if this is true, but the relationship between Daniel and Isaac, and honestly a lot of Daniel's characterization in general just didn't feel totally consistent to me. There was a lot of oversharing and squeeing over boys and it felt like a lot to me and I don't remember them having quite that open of a relationship before, but that could be on me. Regardless, I wasn't a huge fan

4. The ooey-gooey, OTT, lovey-dovey stuff here was at 100, to the point where I was rolling my eyes. There was also a lot of smut, but in a way that didn't totally feel necessary.

I did like learning more about the Sidthe in general and Rory & Cian in particular, and while I thought the plot felt a bit unsophisticated I am generally interested. But truthfully, my favorite bits of the story were those with Eroch, Angel and/or Simeon, and I'm hoping Angel's the focus of the next book.

It's me, not the book... I felt this was uneven. I've been bored out of my mind for the first half of the book. It's been a while since I read the others and I couldn't remember exactly the point where we left the characters and then the plot is, how to put it... sparse. This mostly revolves around Rory and Daniel relationship and it has far too many sexy times in it... and, well, the sexy times weren't so sexy for me, at some point I was rolling my eyes hard. . But well, I suppose the last part made the book for me. Finally we have some plot developments, too fast, too much in to little time, and it ends up in something like a cliffy, but I'm curious enough to continue and learn where we're heading.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

Love Springs Eternal is the fifth book in S.J. Himes amazing Beacon Hill Sorcerer series. While this story features a new couple in Rory and Daniel, the series has an overarching storyline and overlapping characters, so you are going to want to read these in order. That said, if you are new to this series, run, don’t walk, to pick up The Necromancer’s Dance and get started, because this is one of the best urban fantasy series I have read.

Those of us who have been following along with the series know that things have been brewing with Rory and Daniel for a while now, though nothing has been official yet. Here we get to see these guys turn their obvious attraction into something more and oh, are they so sweet and lovely. These are two gentle men who are so caring and kind and you can’t help but want them to find love together.

ETA: The audiobook was given to me for a review and while my main review is below for the book itself, I wanted to add a note that the audio is great!

Ohhhhh finally we get Daniel and Rory's story, and it was so, SO worth the wait!

Sheena writes such lovely stories with such real and vivid world building, and I love this series so much - excellent urban fantasy/paranormal vibes, full of found family feels, strong partnerships where the couple communicate and grow and are stronger together, and writing about healing and recovery and acceptance.

This series should definitely be read in order, as the world building and overall story continues to grow with each new book. Daniel has been around in many books, and we've been waiting for his story and for him to come into his powers, and this book was everything I wanted for him and what he deserved - an epic HEA!

Rory might be an ancient, immortal Sidhe fae but he treats twenty-one-year-old Daniel with respect, tender care, and as his equal, which I love. They truly bring out the best in each other, and I love how Daniel really finds himself with Rory at his side. This is such a sweet - and sexy - romance for the two of then. I love it so much. Definitely steamier than some of her previous books, but I am here for it!

I also love Daniel and Issac's friendship so much - how open and honest they always are together, how much they care for each other. Honestly, the found family feels in this series are just wonderful and such a standout for me, and especially for Daniel finding a home and a place with the Salvatore family. OMG I just love it so much.

And I love Eroch. So so much LOL

So now the waiting begins for the next book LOL. Pick up this series and start from the first book, I can't wait for you to fall in love with the Beacon Hill world!

I received an arc through Patreon and this is my honest review.

I love the Beacon Hill Sorceror series and I also love Daniel. But I…just….didn’t feel like we needed a book for Daniel? I don’t really know why I didn’t love this. I was quite desperately waiting for this and expectations breed disappointment? I dunno… I was more excited for the last chapter or so than the entire book combined 🙈

I’m sorry… it must be meeeee 😭

Well, I guess I am the odd man out on this one. Don’t get me wrong, I love this series, but for some reason, I felt the 1st half of this book was so repetitive my eyes starting glazing over. Thank goodness the 2nd half pulled me back into the story. We get some sweet moments with the entire Salvatore clan plus Eroch’s POV!!!

I know I’ll be reading the next one soon. With that ending, how could I not.

Did I just straight into book 5 in an interconnected series? Yes I did.
Was I sorta confused ? Sometimes.
Did I still love the romance? Also yes! I swear I swooned everything Rory called Daniel “ love, beloved or dear heart “ 🥺
Really wanna see Cian get someone too 🥺

Oh, this was just delightful!

The long awaited fifth installment focusing on Daniel and Rory is finally here, and it was wonderful.

Ever since Rory was saved in the earlier books, reawakened after hundreds of years in stasis, he and Daniel have had something between them.

Rory has been getting acclimated to the modern world, and Daniel has been coming into his own as a sorcerer as an apprentice for Angel.

As events unfold in this, we see these two finally give into what is between, at the same time that trouble is brewing - when isn't it in this world? 😉

As Rory and Daniel get all the more closer, there are attempts at getting past the wards at the older Salvatore estate, where Daniel has officially moved into Isaac's old bedroom. There is even an attempt to cause a storm to focus on the estate to try to destroy it.

There's also more happening with Cian, Rory's brother who has been in jail since Rory had awoken. We get to see much more of him and get to understand his character and motivations more in this installment.

Several attacks that seem to be unrelated are all connected, as we see the more the story unfolds. There's even an attempt to capture Eroch, the only dragon in their realm - who was as adorable as ever.

As for the Rory and Daniel aspect of it all, they already felt like they were in love to me, even though we hadn't gotten their book yet. Daniel was obviously very smitten in previous books, and we see in this Rory was too - he's just thousands and thousands of years old, maybe even more, so he's a little more subtle about it than Daniel.

So because I already felt that connection, when they kiss and get to more in this, it already felt earned. Whenever Rory called Daniel "dear heart" or his "beloved" of course I swooned. How sweet and adorable.

As we know, in the past Daniel was abused, physically and sexually, and for him to have such trust in Rory, that he would never hurt him, is a big deal. Of course Rory never does, and is nothing but gentle and kind with Daniel. When they finally do have sex, Rory is as patient and loving as ever.

Gah, I just...absolutely adored these two. They just fit, so perfectly together. And when .

The plot gripped me too. It was perhaps a tiny bit slow at the very beginning, but only a little bit, and not for very long at all. Once I got past that tiny bit of slowness as the story, the plot took shape, I couldn't put this down.

And as always, there was Angel, being a badass motherfucker, and not letting anyone mess with those he loved. And learning that we're returning to Angel and Simeon in the next book? Yes please! I've loved ALL these couples so far, but these two are of course the OG couple of the series, the ones who made me fall in love with it, so of course I'm ecstatic to get back to them.

And what happened at the end, I suspected it of some certain characters, but I wasn't expecting a third character who showed up. Big spoiler under this tag, just to warn. So don't click if you don't want a big spoiler: .

All these questions! Which of course I have to tune into the 6th installment for. Can't wait for it, I'm excited.

And Daniel and Rory's story was wonderful and wrapped up so well. I'll love if we get focus on them in the future, but I'll be okay if not, since they became very settled by the end of this. Just seeing them together in future book(s) will make me happy too. Either way!

Definitely a must read if you've loved/enjoyed this series so far. It was so satisfying to finally get Daniel and Rory's love story.

Two massive thumbs up from me!👍👍

So I'll be the party pooper here!

First things first this needed a good editing and I don't even mean the spelling mistakes that went through or maybe it's just me that finds incredibly irritating having a character's name( or a specific noun) in a 6 lined paragraph, repeated 5-6 times. Still there were paragraphs that were just wordy and repeating the same thing and could have been condensed. For example:
"[...]Always coveted, the mounds were mourned more by the races and peoples who desired them more than the people who lived within them, the High Court Sidhe. The mounds were one of the resources for which the High Court Sidhe were hunted to functional extinction, and those who coveted the mounds swiftly learned to their detriment that the secrets of the mounds died with their people." .

Secondly there were facts or some particular info, like Rory's scar, that were so often mentioned in a small amount of time that were just

Thirdly there were titbits of info like at the 73% where we got a full explanation of the veil is when Daniel used it, that were just filler. Which really this whole story had a very filler vibe to it.

Now when it comes to our MCs. I don't remember how much contact Rory and Daniel had in the 4th book but the way they appeared here it was like something had already started between them, like they were in the middle of a relationship, with Rory calling Daniel "dear heart" and "beloved", and seriously how could Daniel not get that Rory's feelings were deeper than just like, it's not like he was calling anyone else any kind of endearment... anyway..., and not just "dating" mere days.

Dating is being used a bit loosely here because I'm sorry but Rory was more like Daniel's emotional support Moss-haired Retriever than anything else. Seriously Cian had a bigger and more thorough presence the couple of times he appeared in the story than Rory did. Rory was good, was nice, was beautiful, was supportive, there was nothing he did wrong, he was perfect, so yeah... he could have been a pet for all the depth his character had. The story was totally span around Daniel and how Daniel felt, what Daniel needed and that even expanded to their sex scenes which for all the presence Rory had there too, he could have been a ridged dildo mounted on a sex machine! And because of how little character and presence Rory had, there was no chemistry between the two of them but for a sugary, sickly sweet and sticky kind of romance that did nothing for me but give me a headache from all the eye-rolling I did!

There was some action happening throughout the story, very little though and drowned in sugary scenes, but the two major things that happened in the end and were the most interesting apart from Cian, one was to serve Daniel and the other is what will have me coming back to the series.

P.S.: After the 80% I couldn't take it anymore, I was so frustrated with the story that I skimmed everything passed that even the thing that happened and as I said above will be what will have me coming back to the series.

Ugh.

I love this world. The first three books were some of my first MM romance novels and even upon rereads, I absolutely adore them. They’re not perfect, but they’re damn near. Angel and Simeon are fantastic main characters.

Isaac and Constantine’s book was a huge let down for me because their relationship went way too quickly, and Constantine was majorly lacking a personality.

A big issue I had with this book is similar - Rory is immortal. Where is his personality? Why is he SO SWEET? I skimmed most of the book from 25% to the climax near the end, only stopping to truly read when Angel was around. Even that felt off though, more soft and gentle than early in the series, making it feel like the first three books and the most recent two were written almost by different people. Rory and Daniel’s relationship was so sticky sweet, way too cutsey, and missing the nitty gritty vibes from Angel and Simeon in the first three. I would have DNF’d this so quickly if I weren’t already in love with the world and the characters that were introduced in the first books. It’s just SO FLUFFY.

Anyway, the overall plot was really great, and I loved the big surprise at the end. I loved Daniel’s journey as well - he is a special character.

I very much appreciated the foreword on sexual assault at the beginning of the book from the author also.

Excuse me while I scream about that cliffhanger ending, OH MY GOD.

Daniel and Rory's story, and HEA, were absolutely magical: romantic and heartwrenching, at times, lovely and soft and also very sexy *approves*

I've always wanted Daniel to get his HEA and this book just confirms it: he deserves the world (and also very hot lovemaking with an immortal fea with unexpected accessories) and I'm so happy with the way his story unfolded and developed. He's still vulnerable and anxious and scared and traumatized, but also strong and capable and gentle and sweet, and his healing process was treated with such respect and gah, I love him so much.
Rory was absolutely lovely too: respectful and nice and gallant. I loved his relationship with Cian more than anything though: S.J. Himes did a fantastic job portraying their bond and the gut-wrenching pain of nearly losing each other. I'm officially Team Cian: he's a bit unhinged, a bit violent, a bit of a serial killer *cackles* but I thoroughly adore him.
The story was original and action-and-magic-packed as usual, and I love how well S.J. Himes blends history and the supernatural together. Their world-building too, was, as usual, amazing and complex and after THAT ending I'll be (im)patiently waiting for book number six (and also Cian's story).

*sigh*
I just read the last word of this book about five minutes ago. And I loved every moment of it, and as usual, Sheena has created huge excitement for the next book that I'm going to have to wait another year for. That is my biggest complaint about this book. That I have to wait a year for the next one.

If you've read the previous Beacon Hill Sorcerer books then you know what makes this series special- and if you haven't, then you definitely need to go back and start at the beginning, with the knowledge that each book is consistently an improvement on the last, to the point that the prose in this book is luscious and evocative, and made me wish that I could write as well.

This installment differs (at least to me) from previous ones in that more attention is paid to the romance between Daniel and Rory- like a lot of attention- so the readers gets to spend a lot of time luxuriating in their love and lots, and lots, and lots, of sex. Like so much sex. But it's awesome, and you've come to love the character of Daniel as much as the rest of Sheena Jolie's fans, then you know it's well-deserved.

But Sheena Jolie also deftly raises the stakes on the overarching conflict that has been brewing with the High Council of Sorcery over the last few books, while exploring more about the sidhe brothers Cian and Rory and paying off some marvelous set ups from the end of Book 4.

The Salvatore Estate has hummed back to life again, as has my soul after reading this book, and I can't wait for the next one!
