K-9 Special Ops #1

Tough Justice

Rate this book
It should have been a routine investigation. Instead, DEA K-9 agent Adam “Deck” Decker watches in horror as one Denver hospital seems to be Ground Zero for overdoses of a new drug. Now Deck can only hope a certain icy, green-eyed ER doctor will help him and his canine partner track down the deadly source.

Dr. Tori Sampson has her reasons for not trusting federal agents, especially ones working for the DEA. But the rash of overdoses—including a heartbreaking case involving a teen—is alarmingly high. And the new opioid is not only extremely dangerous, it defies all the usual medical treatments. So Tori has a work with the big, brawny, and annoyingly hot DEA agent…or watch more innocent people die.

Tori’s the only person who can help Deck break the case, and they’ll need to trust each other, no matter how high the tension and attraction sizzling between them runs. But with every question answered, they realize there’s something more behind these typical teen overdoses. There’s a pattern here, and a pattern can only suggest one thing. There’s a killer on the loose.

Tough Justice by Tee O’Fallon is a suspenseful and heart-pounding romantic suspense novel set in and near Denver, Colorado. Dr. Victoria (Tori) Sampson is a dedicated emergency room doctor who saves Dan Prince’s life. Dan is a DEA agent and is accompanied into the ER by Adam Decker (Deck), a DEA K-9 officer. Deck refuses to leave his friend and co-worker’s side. Both Tori and Deck have experiences that cause them to mistrust the other’s profession, but amid an opioid crisis with a new drug on the street called gray death, they agree to team up.

Tori and Deck are both relatable and likeable characters with a few flaws and a lot of strengths. Their relationship developed gradually as they both tried to understand their feelings for one another and rationalized the barriers that needed to be overcome for it to be a success. There are also some strong secondary characters including Deck’s K-9 partner, Thor.

The opening of the story is heartbreaking and memorable and pulls readers immediately into the narrative and the lives of those affected by the opioid crisis. There are plenty of emotional and handwringing moments as the action unfolds. The world-building was terrific. I was able to easily visualize the settings. There are plenty of twists and a few red herrings as the story deals with important themes of drug use, recovery, the opioid crisis, love, respect, compromise, acceptance, trust, death, grief, how one’s actions affect others, and much more. There’s also some occasional humor which provides an opportunity for readers to relax for a moment before the next crisis. This story was a mix of investigation, planning, romance, and action that kept me turning the pages to find out what was going to happen next. I was kept fully invested in them finding the source of the dangerous drugs.

Overall, this book was fast-paced, action-oriented, and entertaining. If you enjoy romantic suspense with plenty of action that has both strong male and female characters, then this may be the series for you. I can’t wait to find out what is next for the K-9 Special Ops team.

This is a Romantic Suspense, and this is the first book in the K-9 Special OPS series. I loved the characters in this book, and I love the K-9 dog in this book. The two main characters has a hate to love thing going on, and they have a lot of chemistry. There are a lot of steamy times in this book. This book did keep me guessing, but I had a feeling of the who did it. The ending was so good. This book is packed with action and suspense. The romance was also really good in this book. I did not want to put this book down after I picked it up. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Entangled: Amara) or author (Tee O'Fallon) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

I freaking love this book! 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This book has everything a romantic suspense lover wants in a story. The author threw everything she had into the creation of this amazing story and it shows.
The topic is right from the headlines today. Then throw in a hot cop, a darling K-9, and a flaming hot romance, and you have a story off the charts.
But it is not all love and romance. We have a love/hate relationship, loads of suspense, great friends, and twists you won’t see coming. I absolutely love this book! Definitely, one to devour again!
There really is just something about a good crime mystery being combined with romance. It exels almost every time, especially in this book.
The sexual tension Deck and Tori had right from the start was just everything. The banter was there, as well as the chemistry. I loved how the relationship developed, it felt like everything was right paced and neither too quick or too slow. I loved the family dynamics and the whole background story to everything.
Also his K-9 Thor is just the goodest boi. He definitely added to the story.
I loved the side characters as well and I also loved that the drug lord wasn´t revealed until the end so you as a reader could guess along with the charcters.
Some of my questions were left unanswered at the end, but maybe that will be cleared in future books of the series.
I really hope there will be books for Brett and Evan, I´d be really interested in their story.
Men in uniform for the win!
Also huge thanks to @Tina's Bookish Life for the recommendation!
This is a well-written, entertaining, fast paced, steamy, romantic suspense novel. It has an intelligent, likable female protagonist, a strong and capable male protagonist, a heroic K-9, intrigue, action, suspense, sizzling chemistry, twists and turns, and a happily ever after ending. I am looking forward to reading the next entry in this new series with great anticipation. I listened to the audio version of this novel, and the narrator, Vanessa Daniels, has a lovely voice and does an outstanding job depicting the characters and their personalities.
Tee O’Fallon has a talent for creating A gripping plot line and a book that practically demands to be read in one sitting –and TOUGH JUSTICE is no exception. I took my time with this amazing and mind blowing story as I wanted to make it last. This is the first story I have read by Tee O’Fallon but it will not be the last! Tee O’Fallon reels in her readers with quite a hook. I am kicking myself for taking so long to finally read this author!
Ms. O’Fallon starts by putting the reader on a crazy roller coaster ride of emotions. If you enjoy romantic suspense, you will love this book. TOUGH JUSTICE is the first book in the K-9 Special Ops series and I am so excited to read them all. The author is now on my must read authors’ list. Deck shows up in the ER with a young guy who is overdosing on a new street drug called Grey Death. Tori can’t get him to leave her ER so that she can work on saving the young man’s life. She’s so much smaller than Deck and I figured he would just push her aside. My thoughts took a complete 180 degree turn! Tori is one tough doctor! That’s all I’m sayin’!
TOUGH JUSTICE flows smoothly and so well, that before you know it, you are finished. Tori and Deck hate each other when they first meet, but they have a lot of chemistry going on as well. There are a lot of steamy times in this book. I was quickly caught up in the story-line and found it difficult to put down. This book just flew by! TOUGH JUSTICE was such a thrilling ride for me!
TOUGH JUSTICE is a real page-turner. I couldn’t put it down until I knew what had happened. Fans of romantic suspense with A lovable dog thrown in, will enjoy this one. TOUGH JUSTICE is so well written, that even though the story moves very fast, it is still easy to follow. I was pulling for Tori to get to live a normal life after having lost so much and been through so many struggles. TOUGH JUSTICE is a suspenseful tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final pages. I highly recommend TOUGH JUSTICE!
A new lethal designer drug is on the streets of Denver leading to an outbreak of overdoses. The danger comes into sharp focus for K-9 DEA Agent Decker, “Deck” when his partner is almost killed executing a search warrant. Dr. Tori Sampson makes an impression while saving his partner’s life. Her inside knowledge and access to victims gives Deck an idea that may help lead him and his team to the brains behind the production and distribution of the “Gray Death.”
Dr. Tori Sampson has noted a marked increase of overdoses in her ER but is less than thrilled with Deck’s proposal to work together since the DEA ruined her father’s professional life. However, Tori doesn’t want to lose another patient, so she begrudgingly agrees.
Deck and Tori start out more like enemies with Tori hating anyone representing the DEA, and Deck’s mistrust of doctors over the role they played in his sister’s addiction and overdose. However, a common desire to rid the community of the Gray Death forces them to put aside their prejudices and work together. Respect and admiration grow between them, as well as attraction, which soon becomes impossible to ignore.
I loved the addition of Deck’s K-9 partner, Thor! He was just adorable and so smart! Deck and Thor made such a great team and I was touched by the loyalty between them.
Tough Justice was fast paced, and action packed. I enjoyed seeing Deck and Tori fall hard for each other while trying to hunt down the bad guy. I thought here was just the right amount of chemistry and sizzle balanced with the mystery, suspense and danger. It was easy to figure out the identity of the bad guy but that didn’t detract from the story at all. I like the feeling of my suspicions being validated.
A copy was kindly provided by Entangled via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I'm not a big romantic suspense fan, but someone recommended this to me knowing that about me, so I trusted them and they were not wrong. I listened to this one fully on audio, so I might have enjoyed it more if I had the ebook. But I did enjoy this book. I liked the narrator and thought the plot was interested. This was overall a good read even though I don't love this genre. I will definitely be continuing this series!
Tough Justice era el libro que necesitaba sin ni siquiera saberlo, hacia bastante tiempo que buscaba una novela de este estilo : que equilibrara el romance junto con el suspense.
Al ser mi primera lectura de Tee O´ Fallon lo inicie con un poco de reservas pero la verdad es que desde el primer capitulo quede totalmente absorbida por la trama, los personajes y el estilo de la autora, fue una muy grata sorpresa. El ambiente en general me recordo ligeramente a las historias de Tonya Burrows y Pamela Clare, razon por la que decidi darle una oportunidad a esta nueva serie, y no me arrepiento en lo mas minimo.
La historia es muy interesante a la par que agil de leer, y aunque en determinado momento pude " adivinar " la parte de misterio ( no es tan impredecible como imaginaba ) en linea general me agrado el desarrollo y la evolucion de los personajes.
La pluma de la escritora como ya digo me gusto mucho, tanto que ya estoy leyendo otro de sus libros, y lo que llevo tambien me esta agradando, definitivamente, acabo de descubrir a una gran autora, creo que voy a pasar grandes momentos con sus historias si estas primeras experiencias son un indicio.
Para finalizar, Tough Justice es un gran romance de suspense. Tiene accion, secretos, misterio y una relacion amorosa que le da un punto especial a un libro muy entretenido.
Un-put-downable!
If you are looking for a reality-based, “capture all your attention”, romantic suspense than you have found it. This author is a ‘must read everything she’s ever written’ kind of writer for me. She deftly pairs the wonder of falling in love with the struggles of everyday life – making me believe that anything is possible, even at the darkest moments…
The opener was a heart-breaker and set the scene for the urgency of the work to come. The characters were utterly likable – including the furry, four-legged one! Hard to pick a favourite when they all stood out. While they dealt with a dark corner of life, they also made me smile as the banter broke up the seriousness of the situations they found themselves.
The buildup was steady on all fronts and kept me glued to my seat and the kindle to the very end. Another great read from a favourite author. A first in a new series – the happy dance hasn’t stopped… ~Diane, 5 stars
I’m always happy with a good romantic suspense. This one was riveting. I wanted to read the ending for the big revelation, but I also wanted it never to end. Tough dilemma.
As it should be, the romance was a bonus, it was first and foremost a suspenseful novel. The intrigue was well done. Characters and events were written as to create multiple red herrings, so you couldn’t possibly guess the ending nor resolve the big mystery until the end. As for the investigation itself, the author wanted so much to be authentic that sometimes it felt a bit tedious, and at other times I thought I missed some information. It was efficient though, with the right balance between protocol talks, action, paperwork and tension.
Mixed with those elements were two more that will without doubt be in the future books in the series too: Deck’s friends on one hand, who’ll probably become main characters, and the dogs on the other, since it’s a K-9 series. I liked both. We get just hints at who Brett and Evan are, so their stories will be surprising. Their relationships with their dogs, though, are well explained through Deck and Thor’s relationship. It was an interesting aspect–and a first for me.
Let’s get back to the romance now. I quite enjoyed it. Both Tori and Deck were interesting characters, with a compelling backstory. Thanks to their personal history, they were born enemies, and I loved seeing their relationship evolve from one of hate to one of passion. It was slow but not too much, and their feelings were based on admiration and respect, which I liked. Sure their physical attraction played a part, but it was really through the time they spend together in various situations that they developped deeper feelings, and they took their time before acting on them. But once they did, wow, that was hot! But it wasn’t erotica. As I said above, the romance was a bonus, not the main attraction–though Deck and Tori’s closeness was definitely a plot device and added to the story’s overall tension.
My main complaints didn’t deter me from enjoying the story. There were a couple of editing mistakes–small ones, that you miss if you blink, mostly details of the story. Also I felt the romance’s ‘will they won’t they’ element dragged a little, two steps back for each step forward.
It was still a really good story with a sexy and heartfelt romantic element. I recommend.
Quickie
- Series: K-9 special ops #1 (can be read as a standalone)
- Hashtags: #romantic suspense #enemies to lovers #doctor #federal agent #dogs
- Triggers: drug abuse, drug trafficking, overdose, teenager deaths, violence, murders
- Main couple: Victoria Sampson & Adam Decker
- Hotness: 4/5
- Romance: 4/5
- + that was one well done intrigue
- – though Tori’s and Deck’s personal hang-ups worked well for the story, they seemed a bit farfetched
Tee starting a new romantic suspense series? I'm THERE!
Me getting an e-arc? MONTH = MADE, because what a way to start my new year, yay!
Me finishing the book? I NEED THE NEXT ONE LIKE YESTERDAY, thank you very much!
Holy heck, this was a great read! From the get go, this story had me utterly hooked/addicted.
What more could I want for in a romantic suspense with also a K-9 element present? Absolutely nothing, because this book had it ALL!
I knew early on already that this one would be a huge hit with me. Just a feeling at first, but the prologue already made sure I was instantly ready for more and made things at the get to so very interesting.
And then we got to meet Deck and Tori and of course Thor, the K-9 dog, and that was IT for me.
Deck and Tori were such amazing characters; so well written/developed as characters on their own, but together? ON FIRE!
Both living other lives and having their own '(emotional) bagage' which made them sceptic of eachother at first, mistrusting.
It was very well written into the mental aspect of both characters, how they had to overcome that part of the other that made them want to keep their distance of one another.
And it was then such a frigging joy then to see them growing closer together and seeing that romance developing, overcoming that mistrust that was so deeply rooted in both of them.
That bond they've grown throughout the book was truly addictive to read about. I really couldn't get enough of it all.
The suspense/mystery element with the drugs etc was super exciting to read about and had me engaged. 'Who's behind all this?' Sometimes you think it seems obvious, but then the author has you questioning yourself again haha. Loved it!
*in the end, my initial hunch was right so yay for me tho hahaha!*
The writing is as per usual, engaging and easy to lose myself in, just as I've come accustomed to when it comes to Tee's writing.
Whenever there's a new book of hers coming our way, I get instantly excited. She always delivers and never lets me down.
This new book may already be one of my favorites by her now! Just such strong writing!
Truly, this romantic suspense has everything I love in this sub-genre;
- a strong headed female main character whom gives as good as she gets and feels very realistic to me
- action packed >> So exciting!
- mystery/suspense element that has you engaged at all times.
The drugs element was a strong one; really well written into the story line!
- badass hero with a fantastic soft side coming to the surface, that fierce protectiveness, and whom is plain right hot AF
I have such a weak spot for badass K-9 handlers like Deck, damnnnnn 🔥
- K-9 Thor whom is able to steal even the coldest of hearts out there, I'm sure haha!
What a fantastic dog he is!
Conclusion
MUST READ if you're into romantic suspense of any kind,
if you're looking for an exciting and engaging read from beginning 'till end,
if you're into romance that is really well developed and has just the right amount of Steam to get you all hot and bothered hehe,
if you haven't gotten yourself aquainted yet with Tee's books...
You could pick up any series of hers, but like I said; this one may already belong to my faves so I just highly reccommend it! If you decide pick it up; ENJOY!!! Can't wait myself to add this one to my shelves in print when the book releases and re-read in the future. I've just finished it, the book hasn't even released yet and I'm already craving my next 'book hit' haha, that's how much I love this author folks!
Denver experiences an unusually high number of drug overdoses, many ending in death. When a DEA agent suffers an overdose just by inhaling a few particles during a drug raid, DEA agent Decker and his unit call out war on the drug lords.
With the reluctant help of ER doctor Tori, who has her personal reasons to distrust the DEA, agent Decker and his loyal K-9 Thor join the fight.
While these two strong characters team up, they start to overcome their initial dislike for each other.
This is a well written suspense story with a strong female character and an alpha male with a lot of heart. It really was well written except for a bunch of annoy factors that are my personal pet peeves. Like – do I really need to get hammered repeatedly about how much Tori hates the DEA? Or how much Deck distrusts doctors?
Do I really have to keep an abbreviation list for all those criminal and medical shorts on hand? It’s like learning vocabulary in school all over again.
And is it too much asked to at least make an attempt to follow safety protocols on drug raids instead of having a civilian tagging along who, of course, will NEVER listen to “stay in the car”. When did they ever?
Tori came over as bitchy, and Deck was too hallmark-y kissing babies and puppies to convince me. I always find it disappointing when authors are so blatantly superficial instead of giving their characters the intended traits by smart actions (female) or emotional involvement (male) without grabbing for the good ol’ puppy scheme.
Nevertheless this story is probably a good one for lovers of the genre. I am just oversensitive to bitchy females and baby hugging alphas.
General writing style: 4 stars
Story line idea: 4 stars
Story line execution: 2 stars
Plot: *oops* - well, I did not get far enough for a plot, sorry.
Annoy factors: repetitive (yes, we got it that Tori hates DEA and Deck hates doctors after it being mentioned for the second time, no need to repeat it in every chapter again), overly dramatic, overuse of criminal and medical abbreviations, civilian accompanying raids is just not realistic or believable = 1 star
R-rated content: Don’t know, I did not get that far
Narration: 3rd POV alternating Tori and Deck, past tense
Main Location: Contemporary Denver, CO
Main protagonists: Dr. Tori Sampson, ER doctor, Adam “Deck” Decker, DEA K-9 unit, both mid 30s
My first book by Tee O'Fallon and I definitely enjoyed this romantic suspense. I don't read too much in this genre, and after this book...I feel like I need more if it! So well written and I was pulled into the story quickly. These characters seemed so real, and the story was full of mystery and suspense. Can't wait to check out more from this author!
Tori is an ER doctor who does not trust federal agents, especially the DEA. Deck works for the DEA k-9 unit. When a string of overdoses of a new kind of opioid hit the area, Deck and Tori must work together to find the source. Then as they get deep into the investigation, they begin to think there could be a murderer to blame.
Tough Justice was an exciting read that had me guessing the entire time. I loved the action and suspense as Tori and Deck came together in the middle of an intense situation. It was really entertaining with the perfect amount of drama and heat that had me on the edge of my seat.
I loved learning about Tori and Deck and their motivations for their jobs and how dedicated they were. I liked the tension and push and pull between them when they meet since they’re in a high-stress situation. I liked them getting to know each other, working together, and letting their guard down as feelings come into play. It was wonderful to see Tori stepping outside her comfort zone and Deck facing issues from his past. All the while there is this really excellent mystery developing about the bad guys and I loved the build to the details.
This was a great series starter. I liked meeting Deck’s friends and the bonds they have and am looking forward to more stories since some really good groundwork was laid for them. The romance was sweet, sexy, and passionate, though it did feel a little fast-paced at times. I really liked Deck’s K-9 partner Thor, he was incredibly charming and smart and made me smile. The details were good but not overly in-depth, giving me just what I needed to keep me fully invested, looking forward to what would come next.
This was my first time reading this author and I'd definitely read her again. There were a lot of great elements in play that kept me turning the page. Even though there were bad guys doing horrible things, it never felt heavy, it was more on the lighter side for me. I didn't feel stressed out, just really excited as everything unfolded. Exciting was pretty much the theme. I totally enjoyed this!
With an enemies to lovers vibe and action that will keep you on the edge of your seat, Tough Justice became an instant favorite! The story line grabbed me, the characters leaped from the pages and this book was a page turner. If you're a fan of adult romance or romantic suspense, then you need this story in your life!
Annoying though it was to admit, since meeting him, she’d done more things outside her box than in her entire life, and she was, dare she say, enjoying it. Why was that?
I don't typically read romantic suspense, but I'm so glad I picked this one up because the story was phenomenal, the romance was a slow burn that became steamy and it made me feel every emotion under the sun! Victoria Sampson, aka Tori, was a doctor in a hospital that became ground zero for overdoses of a new drug in Colorado. Adam Decker, aka Deck, was a DEA K-9 agent who watched his co-worker and good friend almost die from that same drug while on a routine drug investigation. Teaming up was the only way they were going to solve the case and save others from dying.
“Be careful ,” Tori said, freezing him in his seat for half a second. He could swear there was genuine concern in her voice, and he liked it.
“Always.” He grabbed his rifle and was out the door, hitting the fob button to release Thor.
My first impression of Tori was that while she was passionate about her job, she seemed to have no problem being cold or short to Deck in the ER. Regardless though, she was brilliant, calm, wicked smart and saved his friend from dying. So I was shocked when it didn't take me long to warm up and absolutely love Tori. I got her anger towards Deck. It wasn't truly him, but her past was tainted by the DEA. Ironically, they both didn't trust the other ones profession. And it fueled their enemies to lovers relationship beautifully!
“Don’t you get it?” he asked hoarsely. “I care about what happens to you. I couldn’t take it if anything did.”
Gently, he kissed her one last time on the forehead then backed away. The expression on her face mimicked the way he felt. Shell shocked.
Deck was sigh worthy. He was thoughtful, quick witted, patient, smart and had such a huge heart. Even if his presence could be intimidating, just watching him interact with his K9 Thor melted me. And Thor, a Belgian Malinois, oh I loved him so much! Thor's personality shined so brightly and I loved seeing how he reacted to things! But when it came to Deck, there was also this whole other side of him. His backstory was tragic and it hurt to hear how haunted and jaded he was. Deck was definitely a tortured hero I fell hard for!
Whatever this was between them, she didn’t want it to end.
Deck and Tori despised each other’s fields of work, but they couldn't ignore the attraction that simmered between them. Watching their slow progression was smile inducing! And the further we got into this story....it was hot *fans face*! Tough Justice was the perfect mixture of sexy, emotional and suspenseful. Because as the story unfolded, the emotions overwhelmed me. This story could be dark and intense. My breath got snagged and I was terrified anytime I thought Deck or even Thor was in danger. I cried. Multiple times. I screamed out loud. And I also fell deeply in love too.
She’d been given a ringside seat to what being part of his life would entail, and she was too much of a coward, even to hold on to something she so desperately wanted. Him.
Tough Justice was an action packed, emotional ride! I loved watching the pieces of the puzzle come together. I loved watching Deck and Tori grow. I loved the romance, friendship, and the dogs too! This book was such a huge win! I will definitely be reading the rest of O'Fallon's back list and whatever future books she releases!
What an enthralling read this proved to be,
Complete with K-9s, suspense and mystery!
The first in a new series, I'm pleased to say
I can't wait to read more when they're available some day!
An ER Doctor, Tori Sampson, is cross
As overdoses cause so many young lives to be lost.
However, family drama in her past also mean
Working with the DEA is a nightmare, no a dream!
Can DEA K-9 agent, Adam “Deck” Decker change her mind?
Can they work together the sources to find?
And whilst working together will they give a chance
To develop their attraction into a romance?
There's danger and history for both of these now
But can they overcome the odds and somehow
Keep each other safe whilst working together
To put away the drug lord, stopping his rule forever?
A gripping adventure, with brill K-9 heroes, too,
I thoroughly recommend this book to you!
For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you,
An enthralling read and this is my honest review.
It literally has everything you could ever ask for. Romance, angst, suspense, mystery, IT'S ALL THERE.
All the best tropes: would sacrifice himself to save her, who did this to you, a man willing to grovel, protectiveness, would do anything for her, ALL PRESENT AND BETTER THAN EVER.
AND IT'S SO WELL WRITTEN
AND IT'S REALISTIC BUT ALSO SOMEHOW RAISES MY STANDARDS???
If all men in uniform were like Deck and his friends this world would be a significantly better place.
I love Tori but I definitely love Deck way more than she does.
The fact that the author herself was a federal agent and police investigator makes this book so much better because you already know the info is accurate AND I LOVE THAT.
THOR OWNS MY HEART. I NEED A THOR.
I ALSO NEED ANOTHER BOOK IN THIS SERIES ASAP.
I am a sucker for romantic suspense and all things K9. In Tough Justice, our hero Adam “Deck” Decker and his dog, Thor. Deck is DEA, and when one of his own almost dies from exposure to a street drug known as Gray Death, it is Dr. Tori Sampson, who saves him. While she isn’t a fan of the DEA for personal reasons, she is concerned about the number of patients dying from this new drug. The two end up working together. Only the danger is closer than they think.
O’Fallon delivered a suspense storyline that provided foreshadowing and red herrings as she slowly built up the suspense. This war on drugs story with its deadly body counts felt like it was ripped from current headlines. The villain and their story were twisted and felt authentic.
This combined with the haters to lovers slow-building romance (until it burst into flames) made for an addictive listen. I loved the banter, the building of trust, and the undeniable chemistry.
Vanessa Daniels narrates and provided both the voice of Tori and Deck. She enhanced the tale from their chemistry to the growing danger. Her tone, vocal range and pacing were top-notch.
Fans of romantic suspense will want to grab their earbuds and enjoy this first in a new series. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer
Review copy was received from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
It's no surprise to my regular readers that I love this K9 Special Ops series.  Apparently this is a new series, not exactly the same as the Federal K9 series.  I'll be interested to see how the series develops.
Our main characters are Deck (Adam Decker) who is a DEA agent,  who lost his sister to the opioid crisis with his K9, Thor.   When a new version of drug nearly kills his partner, he decides to try to work with a doctor, hoping to learn from the victims who live anything they might know to help them catch dealers.
The doctor, Tori Sampson,  has a bad history with the DEA since her father was punished for helping people.   So she is not favorable to helping but she also doesn't want more people to die.  And people are overdosing daily.
As always, I could have used more time with Thor working, but I was glad to see the team's dogs working and also some of their training.   The mystery and romance are well balanced.  It was a little over the top how each character had the exact bias to not like the other for their job without knowing the person.
Deck and Tori work through their personal issues of trust with each other, building respect for each other as they slowly take down bad guys.  When one warrant seems to be a setup with not the expected dealer,  the DEA fears they have a leak.  Some suspect Tori.  It's a deadly race to take down the head dealer before he hurts Tori or Deck.  The suspenseful pace to the finish is exciting!
Yesssss! Sizzle, Suspense, and all the feels. Loved, loved, loved this book. The beginning is heart breaking and so relevant. This book revolves around intelligent caring people and a K9 - Score! It was a quick intense read. Ying - yang equals balance and this book had it all' I loved Deck (DEA) although I kept picturing a body builder on steroids, which is not my first choice. Tori (Dr) has compassion and intelligence. Finding out why Tori hated the DEA could have been brought up a little sooner. The whole situation with Deck, with Tori and her dad brings to light so many issues but never detracted from the story. I thought I knew who it was and then thought maybe I was wrong. There were a few red herrings I almost let lead me astray. Sometimes one sees only what they want to. Absolutely adored the romantic build, the strength and integrity that was in this relationship and all the sizzles. I have to say in the end, even though I loved Deck, its Thor for the win. Entertainment with Feeling. Thank you NetGalley, Entangled Publishing and Tee O'Fallon for the arc. I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.
I loved this book, and writing this review without giving anything away is tough. Ripped from the headlines, we get a great premise and story. It is a fast-paced read with plenty of action, suspense, twists, steam, and romance. I will not forget the K-9 partners.
I am looking forward to reading more of this series.
4.5 stars. Great start to a new series from a new author for me. Plenty of action, suspense and romance. As an added plus DEA Agent Deck's adorable K-9 dog/Thor was front and center during this story. Looking forward to book 2's release date.
The good stuff:
Would I recommend? Yes!
Themes/tropes: enemies to lovers, slow burn
Steam level: medium-high
Content warning: drug overdose
Ok I started rather skeptical but this was a pretty great book!
It follows Dr. Tori Sampson, an ER doctor with a grudge against the DEA, and Adam "Deck" Decker, a DEA agent with a distrust of doctors due to their part in the opioid crisis. They reluctantly decide that they have to work together to solve the mystery of how to stop the supply of this new drug that's overtaking their city, resulting in a large number of new overdose deaths. Deck's K-9 partner, Thor, is basically a third main character in the best way possible.
The biggest thing that makes this book stand out to me is that the author is a federal agent herself, and her knowledge of the industry definitely comes through in this book. The character development is amazing. You really get to know Tori and Deck in a way that makes all their decisions make sense. Deck is the perfect balance of protective without being overbearing or creepy, and is so sweet in his concern and care for Tori.
I would describe this is as a bit of a slow-burn; by 40% in there's only been a kiss, but the wait is worth it. Once it gets going though, there's some definite steam! The mystery aspect of this book was also outstanding; I was kept guessing until the end! I even thought I had it figured out before realizing I was wrong. I love that!
As far as what I would change, just a couple minor things. In the beginning pages of the book, it states "At Entangled (publishing company), we want our readers to be well-informed. If you would like to know if this book contains any elements that might be of concern for you, please check the book's webpage" and then links the website. Upon seeing this, I thought there must be some trigger warnings I should be aware of. Then I went to the website to find there were none listed, so I proceeded with confidence. Then the first chapter describes in detail a teenager fatally overdosing - WHAM! Even though I knew this book was about drug ODs, that felt like a swift intro to the topic. Even though the synopsis includes this info, I feel it would be appropriate to put a content warning at the beginning of the book, as the seriousness of the topic could be really harmful to some readers. Additionally, I would prefer any content warnings be listed right in the book rather than being directed to the website to look for myself.
As far as the story, it was just a tiny bit long compared to others in this genre. Also, there was a point in the beginning when all Deck's cohorts were being introduced that included a lot of long, detailed job titles. That was the only time I felt like the author's thorough knowledge of the topic was a hindrance - as a reader, I don't know or care much about details like that, and it was confusing. Overall, I loved the book and would definitely recommend!
Thank you to Netgalley and Entangled for the advanced copy of this book.
What a book! WOW.
This book has everything that I need to satisfy my reading passion romance, crime, suspense and HEA.
A story is about Tori, a doctor in ER and Deck, a DEA agent. They met in the Hospital where Tori works and it was hate at first sight. He hates doctors, she hates DEA. There are always drug dealers on the streets but this time one particular dealer sells the most deadly drug called "gray death" and no one knows him. Day after day Deck and his colleagues are a step closer to that man, but it seems he is always a step ahead.
The story is interesting and adventurous. It felt like I was watching a movie or like I was in the story itself.
The characters are so alive and real that was easy to relate with them.
Tori is strong and independent woman, who lives for her job. She doesn't have time for dating or entertainment. The only thing that she want and can care of are her terrariums.
Deck is alfa male type character with muscular body, he is quite tough but a very nice person when you get to know him.
The only thing that was sort of offshooting for me was that at the start the similarity of the names made me feel confused as to who was who, but later I remember the names of the characters and it's comprihendable.
I was very quickly drawn into this one right away. I found it interesting that both Deck and Tori hated each other for the same base reason, bad things happening in their past with people in the same professions. I wondered how that would work for them to get over that deep seeded hatred for any kind of romance. But it did, things were naturally revealed and each could see good in the other. It also helped that both were passionate about why people were od'ing left and right and wanting to do something about it.
The more that they found out the more that it seemed like the bad guy might be a little too close for comfort. It all came down to the end when Tori had the blinders ripped from her eyes and Deck realized how much he cared for Tori and how scared he was for her.
Things ended in a good way, the good guys won, but the best was when Deck's mom met Tori and had a little surprise of her own. So funny!
Tough Justice is the first book in the K-9 Special Ops series. This one is Deck and Tori's story. I really enjoyed this one. Along with the strong chemistry between the couple, I liked how they worked through their baggage and were able to figure out compromises. I loved the friendship among Deck's colleagues. The book does deal with the heavy topic of drug abuse and overdose. There were a couple of twists and lots of tense moments. I do recommend this one and look forward to the next in the series.
This was a pulse pounding, heart wrenching read from cover to cover. I could not get enough.
Honestly as a start to a new series it's best going in blind, and you won't be disappointed for a single second, which is why I couldn't not put it on my top reads of '22 list.
I'm keeping my review vague for certain reasons but trust me, I don't have a single complaint and can't wait to see these characters again.
