Such a good book omfg, super easy urban fantasy, mentions of SO MANY CREATURES/SPECIES ITS JUST SO ENJOYABLE

No but fr, I genuinely enjoyed myself so much, so humorous - the mentions of Greek mythology was just amazing. I think this is the perfect example of a book being easy and yet high fantasy, something we just DO NOT get anymore

I desperately want to see more of Nathan and the inn & all those who wish to seek refuge inside, I just loooved ugh

ALSO

Nathan is giving HEAVY Geralt of Rivia vibes, the book also gives very the Witcher vibes and I LOVE

The sequel to Storm’s Child, Death’s Edge, did not disappoint. Although the book is short, it still packed quite a punch and left me once again excited for another book.

The story starts three months after the first book has ended, when life has seemingly returned to normal, until a serial killer decides to say hi:) This book gives us even more background story when it comes to some characters we already loved in the first instalment, but it also answers some questions we might have had.

I would say, maybe there was one too many combat scenes for my personal liking, but I still think they were quite well-written and enjoyable to read, making the book fast-paced.

I’m excited to read the third book in the series as I’m intrigued to see if the Greek mythology aspect will play an even bigger part, and how Nathan and Silera’s relationship will evolve!

Holy Urban Fantasy!

Death's Edge is the second book of "The Rune Caster Chronicles," and I could not put this down! Readers are thrown into non-stop action with intricately woven mysteries and tons of witty banter.

John Ortega has a masterful skill for plotting, world-building, and penning richly diverse creatures.

The premise is quite enjoyable as MC Nathan Mercer owns an inn that acts as a haven for supernatural beings. This was refreshing to me for two reasons:
1) I tend to read more female-dominated urban fantasy so getting a male POV was interesting.
2) Nahan isn't employed in the conventional careers within the protective services (police/detective) etc. as is the norm in urban fantasy. Using the Inn as Nathan's base was smart on the author's as it gives a different yet uniquely creative spin.

In this installment of the series, Nathan puts his past as Winter Wolf's knight to rest and embraces his new responsibilities as the Defender of Oregon and Champion of the land. Nathan is the quintessential hero and throws himself headfirst into dangerous situations much to the chagrin of his past flame, Silera, daughter of Mab and all-around powerhouse.

Reasons why you need to read this:
-->Diverse and unconventional paranormal characters
-->Lots of familiar names, Hades (cough cough)
-->It's told from Nathan's perspective so readers enjoy a male POV which was insightful and refreshing
-->Action, Action, and Action!!!! This book hits the "Go Button" from the beginning and does not stop
-->Nathan is the King of Magical Improv and has the quintessential hero complex that causes him to dive headfirst into dangerous situations
-->Slow burn romance and "omg" plot revelations
-->Intricately woven urban fantasy

Thank you to the author and Smashbear Publication for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review

Death's Edge definitely keeps you on the edge ...(yep, I saw the moment and took it xD)

Rating: 4.5/5

Mini Synopsis:
Death's Edge is the sequel to Storm's Child in the Rune Caster Chronicles.
The book follows the not-s0-peaceful life and struggles of Nathan Mercier, an innkeeper with a tragic past with the Fae. This urban fantasy has wonderous and rather frightening magical creatures all packed in a suspenseful murder mystery.

Mini-Review:

I really liked this book !!! For a fantasy sequel, this book exceeded my expectations ...it was packed with action and suspense and fantasy drama and my personal favourite ...Hades + Persephone's cool featurette (????WHAT ???? BRILLIANT)...+ the Celtic influences
I did find the fighting scenes to be a bit much though, but the suspense and drama were just perfect !!!
The narration was to my liking, witty and sharp. The characters are unique and quite well sculpted . As for the book, it is fairly short, but still rich in detail and rather addictive.

Recommended to all those looking for a quick fantasy suspense and action-packed read

🔮Note: Thanks Smashbear Publishing for sharing with me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own

Murder most grisly, magic and mayhem! Poor Nathan cannot catch a break with the next instalment of the Rune Caster series. Grab hold of your chair as this book takes you on a trip at break neck speed.
Magical monstrosities and dead nature patches are just some of the issues that he has to deal with along with battling a thousand year old witch.
Highly recommend 📚

Thank you very much to Smash Bear Publishing for inviting me back on the book tour to John Ortega’s anticipated sequel to Storm’s Child and for sending me a free copy of the book in exchange for a review 🐻✨

This sequel packs a punch with even more action than the first book but without throwing the pace of the series off - and by the sounds of the last chapter it’s only going to gain momentum!

Will our hero innkeeper ever catch a break? You can really see strong character development in this book as Nathan tries to track down a lethal serial killer, come across (and battle) powerful creatures, struggle with his love life, carry around the weight and guilt of the events in Storm’s Child and on top of all that trying to keep Sabine happy 😂🐶

It was great to see more of Devon in this one and the relationship between him and Nathan with their sarcastic and almost brotherly banter with one another. Side note: my face when reading about the extent of Devon’s power and the reveal of who his dad is = 😵 I also really enjoyed getting to see more of Silera and the romantic tension between her and Nathan who have great chemistry together but also a painful past.

If you like fast-paced urban fantasy books which are full of twists, turns and dry humour then I really recommend this book!

Nathan has been expecting a confrontation from the fae, however, an unexpected killer changes his plans. Not only have the fae learnt Winter’s Wolf lives, his life stumbles into collision with the past. Nathan sets out to stop this killer with the help of some familiar faces and guests at his inn.

I was really glad to have received the second book for many reasons! SmashBear Publishing’s blog tour for book one Storm’s Child was the first ever blog tour I participated on at the beginning of my For The Literature journey, so this feels extra special. Also, I really enjoyed the first book and transportation to Tir na nÓg, so I was very intrigued to return to Nathan’s world. Ortega writes fantasy in such a way that I am being converted to read more! This is probably the genre I read the least of, so when I do read a fantasy novel I like, I find I really enjoy it, especially Ortega’s books. Death’s Edge captivates readers from the beginning and is full of action, mystery, suspense, and more Sabine cuteness. I am still waiting for my own Sabine.

Having looked back at my review for Storm’s Child I am glad that there was more Devon in this book. The relationship between the characters were developed in this book and I am glad to have already been introduced to them in book one. I already felt connected to the story based on that as Ortega writes impressionable and likeable characters. The narrative is fast paced and flows well, especially with the realistic dialogue. The conversations don’t feel forced and have a relatable element despite being urban fantasy. And, you guessed it, more sarcasm. One thing that I absolutely loved about Death’s Edge is the glossary at the beginning of the novel. This was a useful touch as I referred back and was thoughtful to the reader. A lot of the time when reading fantasy I am wishing for a glossary, so I am really glad Ortega included one.

The originality is spectacular, with gripping detailed descriptions to fully transport the reader. I loved learning more about Nathan and read the development of the character. I also really enjoyed reading more of Ortega’s creativity. Much like Storm’s Child I found myself reading Death’s Edge in almost one sitting. I was hooked to read more.

Overall, I am really happy that Death’s Edge matches the fantastic elements featured in Storm’s Child and presents even more to the reader. This was a brilliant sequel and I am happy to have read this. I also look forward to reading more by John Ortega.

Nathan Mercer is back and he’s bringing his friends along for the ride!

Nathan who runs an inn for all things supernatural and where they can be safe from those who use magic is bracing himself for a fight that’s soon to come. Still on the hunt for the killer who murdered his friend, it’s upto him to find out who the killer is before they kill again.

Just like the first one there is an array of different magical and mystical creatures such as dragons, zombies, shapeshifters and witches.

With a cast of brilliant characters, we get to learn a bit more about their heritage with this one and it focuses a lot more on their relationships with each other. We get to see a lot of Devon who is a really cool and brilliant character who fast became one of my favourites.

‘The Death’s Edge’ follows on from the first one and is just as good and proves we can expect just as great things from the next one in the series.

Full of action and some witty moments. There’s no dull moment in this one.

It’s a short but fantastic read.

If you love dark fantasies then be sure to check this one out!

“The courts were meant to temper you, my sweet. Are you ready for what lies ahead?”

This was such a fun read!! I have to admit, I haven’t read the first book yet, but when I was presented with the opportunity to read this one, I jumped at the chance! You don’t have to have read the first book in order to read the second one, but it would definitely be useful (I’m off to get the first one now lol).

A storm was brewing on the horizon and I needed to prepare. But first and foremost, I needed more cake.

The characters were so well written - I was invested in them from the start, which is something I always look for in a book. The world-building was great, and the plot, *chef’s kiss*! Honestly, I was hooked from the start, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes next!

Thanks so much to SmashBear Publishing for opportunity to read this book!

Fast-moving urban fantasy with a sarcastic edge! I enjoyed this sequel to Storm's Child and especially enjoyed watching the characters develop further. Nathan's character in particular showed some more depth, giving us a glimpse at the feelings that hide behind his sarcasm. The mystery mixed with the fantasy world was a fun combo and there were parts of the story that gave me Deathly Hallows vibes! Don't miss the epilogue!

The second book in the rune caster series takes place months after the first. The serial killer is still at large, killing both witches and mundane women.
Nathan gets wrapped up in the pursuit when he is attacked by by a strange amalgamated creature. Heinous murder, the fouling of the land and odd creatures are the flavor of the day

This series is so fun and has everything I love in an urban fantasy: witty banter, layered folklore, badass heroes/heroines, nuanced side characters, and a whole lot of supernatural drama.
