Black Autumn #7

America Invaded

Rate this book
How deep does loyalty run between father and son on opposite sides of apocalyptic, civil war?

As winter blocks the mountain passes during the Black Autumn apocalypse, the conquering forces of the Mexican drug cartel occupy and enslave the population of Flagstaff, Arizona. Ex-mercenary, Green Beret, Bill McCallister plays the shrewd kingmaker while his adopted son, Noah Miller, fights and bleeds for the American partisans, opposite his own father.

The ties between father and son strain to the breaking point as ever more powerful weapons find their way onto the desert battlefields of armageddon: Abrams tanks, A-10 Warthog jets, and finally a tactical nuclear warhead.

When convictions collide, can the love of a father and a son withstand the maelstrom of war?

Each of these White Wasteland books are sequels to the Black Autumn ones, and this one happens to be the continuation of the story I liked the least (Conquistadors). I was hoping it could explode into something amazing, but...nope. Unfortunately, my feelings for Conquistadors bled into this entry and I found myself just really, really disliking it. The editing of grammatical errors seemed so subpar this go-around, many of which were painfully obvious. Once, the exact same paragraph was placed on two separate occasions, clearly because whoever was responsible for writing them didn't decide which place to keep them. Don't believe me? Type in "Bee Gees" in the search bar and you'll see what I mean.

The plot that started with Conquistadors seemed like it could be so very simple when carried further on into its sequel, Noah facing off against the cartel and such. But it just kept getting bogged with excess convolution. There were just so many times I legit could NOT easily envision the various events happening, and I think the blame falls squarely on the fact that this entry (as well as its predecessor), focuses on war tactics, weaponry, schemes, etc. There's not much attention to surviving the new world, at least not when it comes to the actual apocalypse. Sure, it's surviving cartel incursions, but...that's something I'm seriously not interested in. Still. *sigh* Damn but I so wanted to like this one. But alas, it was not to be.

It definitely started out great, though, so great that I honestly thought I had a 5-star read in my hands based on the characters alone. There were more of them this time (and interesting ones to boot), which was something Conquistadors lacked. I loved the new character Willy and the "bromantic" chemistry shared with Noah (who was so much more laid back here). I loved everyone's interactions told via realistic, entertaining dialogue. I loved the banter and the back-and-forth talks. I was delighted with this book up until it got to Noah and his father taking matters into their hands as they faced off against a seemingly mutual enemy. But there are agendas in tow, distrusts between father and son that prey on each of them. It's a plot point that SHOULD be compelling, but ended up just being overstuffed narrative yammering from the two. I just couldn't get into it at all.

At any rate, there's not much more to say. This book clearly appeals to some other fans of the franchise, which hey, I'm glad it did. I simply didn't like this entry, and nearly rated it 1-star for disappointing me so badly after such a promising start. The only thing that gave the extra star was the improvement with the characters. Otherwise, I am ready to forget this entry ever existed and move on to the next one, which--with it being a sequel to The Last Air Force One, an entry I LOVED--should have what it takes to appease me.

Continuing the violent death of America.

If the cartels weren't power hungry enough, Russia had eyes on Americas nuclear arsenal. Another thought provoking chapter of this terrific series.

Back to Noah who is now a volunteer warrior with the Air Force after he brought down an oil refinery on top of the Cartel tanks. The Air Force has rousted up 3 A-10s to use against the cartel tanks, but they need ammo, which is stored in Oklahoma. Noah has to get the ammo (plan A) or else the crazy USAF captain threatens to use a tactical nuke on Flagstaff to wipe out the cartel.

Bill McCallister - ex Green Beret and mercenary - is thriving in the chaos, playing all sides at the same time. He wants America to lose and cartel leader Tavo to take over. His only true loyalty is to his adopted son Noah. Noah doesn't trust Bill at all.

The cartel is in chaos...sort of. Ex USN Seal Beto is in charge of the cartel army since they think Tavo is dead. He is working directly for Tavo's daughter and new leader of the cartel. Bill is also working for Beto...and Tavo...and the USAF....and the various militias.

America Invaded. Jeff Kirkham Jason Ross

America in it's final gasping breath. The Mexican Cartel is controlling large checks of Southwestern America. It's final push to control in Salt lake city. A father and his stepson share a special, unique bond. One, the son a patriot, a fighter held in high regard by many. A hero. His father, a former Green Beret plays the cards to hisadvantage. He will deal with the devil to gain advantage. And he does. He plays people like a worn out fiddle. In the end his only goal is to save his son. This is a truly remarkable read with an amazing cast of characters. My highest recommendation!!! Enjoyed!!

You have to love Bill, the free-spirited Green Beret of the apocalypse, and the way he bounces between factions on his secret squirrel missions. Despite good intentions of many, and bad for others, Bill has the best bird's eye view beyond the moment. Also, the banter of Bill, Noah, and Willy makes the journey just that much more enjoyable. (and yes, us white boys and our Valhalla lol)

Some interesting twists and turns in this one. The dynamic between characters, particularly Bill, gave the story another layer of depth. Riding into the sunset in a dune buggy with the biggest bang-stick of all... priceless.

So many twists and turns I’m dizzy!!

This book was so interesting as it had many mysteries running consecutively. No matter what you expected another mystery unraveled differently than you thought. The apocalypse still turned men, woman and children in types of zombies. People starving which makes them evil and bold. Fights and wars are common everywhere. Our heroes trying to make things better but mostly makes things worse. It’s hard now after two months to decipher between the good and the bad.

honestly not a fan of the characters in this book. i thought i might like these characters in earlier books but after more character building in this book not a fan. also i kept hearing blah blah blah blah when reading what felt like the same chapter over and over and over again. I am only continuing with this series because I am not one to stop reading a series and see how it all ends. However, I am going to start the next book and if it’s as bad as this one I am tossing in the towel and moving on.

This is on the list of rare stories where the sequel is better than the original. Part 2 of the Conquistadors arc focuses on the much more likable American characters fighting the narco incursion. Bill and Noah are back at it as the Nortenos consolidate assets in Flagstaff AZ. This installment of the Black Autumn series has it all: intrigue, plot twists, character depth, pace and more. It's definitely a satisfying read.

Gets better and better!!!

This has been an excellent way to spend the end of 2021 andthe stsrt of 2022. I have just begun thoughts of becoming a prepper, but at 80 it does not seem plausible! I wish I had been directed earlier in life. I will try to get my children to start planning

They have still not disappointed me in this series. The snappy dialogue in this book was some of the best I have read since Robert B. Parker. I love the ball-breaking, humorous back-and-forth between Noah and Willie and between Noah and Bill. They poke fun at all ethnicities and stereotypes. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Keep them coming.

Great series. Mostly believable

This has been a great series of books that is believable. My criticism is the lack of faith in the spirit of the American people. I think this series would make great television.

America invaded

Old Bill generates a lot of confusing plans and even wilder action sequences throughout this tale. Noah is confused and creates more situations where reason is abandoned.

Yes, it should be a TV series!

The saga continues. In this genre, complicated, long, arcing, plots, deep, character development, and pure entertainment, never seem to come together in one book. These guys do it in each installment. They rock!

fathers, sons, biker gangs, soldiers, cartels, patriots, cowboys and Navajos.

No straight lines in this one, lots of unexpected twists, but a good sequel. Less starving. More farming in Unexpected places and unexpected ways.

Constant action

This book flows from start to finish with a dramatic flair and constant action. Twists and turns galore. One can’t help but feel as if they are a part of the action.

Why not?

The scenarios here really caught my imagination. For naysayers look around you. Then say it cannot happen here. Then tell me why not. I hope this is not a cautionary tale.

I have really enjoyed this series. But for some reason I just could not get into this book. Maybe I just need to take a break from it for a bit. Good book. Just seems lacking compared to the others.

I did like the book, but I thought there were areas in which it dragged and got a little confusing.

Kirkham and Ross do a great job building a society and series that will continue in the fiction realm as a great read far into the future.
