It can also be extremely useful for anyone who even wonders if he or she might have narcissistic tendencies. Yes, even you.
I couldn't put this book down. Not your typical "self help" book. It's more of a "textbook" type. I learned SO much. Not only does this book describe ways to overcome narcissism - for those of us who either have narcissistic tendencies (Which EVERYONE does), or those that are full blown diagnosed Narcissistic Personality Disorder individuals. Basically unless you grew up on the set of "The Brady Bunch" and actually had parents that weren't alcoholics, narcissists themselves, or too busy to parent you, you have narcissistic triggers that sabotage your relationships. Relationships include friends, family, co-workers, and even strangers you encounter. Prepare to be educated and also armed with tools necessary to overcome narcissism yourself, and also how to effectively respond to the narcissists in your life. I'm so thankful for this book.
This book serves as a competent overview of current theories about what narcissism is, how it manifests in people, and potentially viable therapy methods for combatting its symptoms. However, I did not find it to be a comprehensive guide to solving the problem its title promises it will be. There are other narcissism guides out there that cover roughly the same introductory information. It doesn't even get into potential solutions until the final sections of the book, and my expectations were set such that that would be the focus of the entire book.
There are also dozens of case studies that do little to cover anything compelling about real-life narcissistic behavior. Most of them just repeat the same type of information. Someone was struggling with being unempathetic with others in their life. They tried therapy. It either did or didn't work. Then a lot of conjecture about why it did or didn't work. I skipped over most of these.
