Drew Smythe, the wolf that kidnapped and tortured me, knows he can’t win his freedom so he’s dead set on ruining my professional reputation with his defence strategy. Kellianna, the rock and love of my life, is being called away to Ireland by her mother for an emergency.
And Evan? We’ve gotten... closer. It scares me. Kellianna wants me to give him a chance, but how can I? He’s so new to Hawaii and we’re both in the press’s eye for Drew’s court case.
I’ve also taken on a new big client—but I think I messed up. They need my expertise and my power to handle the evil that’s been sent their way. I thought they needed my muscle and finesse for a corporate espionage problem. What I find instead is far worse. Once again I have a client who’s life is on the line and I’m the only one who can fight it.
The pressure is mounting and I’m beset from all sides. I’m reaching out but everything is slipping like sand through my fingers. Honestly, I don’t how much more I can take before I explode.

Holy smokes! This book is amazing. It's the second in the series, so it really is necessary to read the books in sequence. This is a fantasy, a mystery noir, and a polyamorous romance. I love how much is going on at the same time: Maka's love life and her job are in conflict, while the fallout from book 1 is still in play, and there's a new case to handle with politics mixed in. The magic is still a huge part of the story, but it's really about the dark energy (evil) inside of people.
I love how Maka is a real person. She makes mistakes, feels guilty, and needs help sometimes. Magical or not, she is just a woman trying her best to deal with all the crap that life keeps dealing her. I also enjoyed seeing more of Kellianna. She is still not present in most of the story, but Maka thinks about her a lot. Then there's Evan. I'm not sure how I feel about him.
Tons of typos and grammatical errors, but the story is so good that it's not too distracting.
But also needs to give herself one. Good follow up story. I know we’re only getting pieces of her whole story and so much of it is sad, but it really seems like she doesn’t cut herself any slack. I go back and forth with feeling sorry for her and being frustrated with her as there’s obviously trauma induced mental illness. Again, I go back and forth between wanting an authentic story to one that’s a little easier and not so heavy. The author is great though and I look forward to her next books!
Maka is trying to deal with what is going on in court as well as finding out who is hurting her new client. That is not all that is going on, Kels gets a call to help her mothers Coven and you really see that she keeps Maka Grounded but not being there is hard on Maka. Things with Evan get there amazing moment and then kinda go crazy. You feel then pain in that. Oh man then there is a moment with Jason and you see how much he is there for her. Now what is going on with Jared? look forward to book 3.
This series is so different from what I've read previously but I'm very much enjoying it. Mama is such an intriguing and complex character. Not sure if I'm rooting for Evan or not...love Jason and I hope that develops...then there's Jared. Can't wait to see how this will all shake out.
This book was as good or better than book 1. Maka is strong and scary sometimes, but she gets things done. I feel bad for poor Evan. Great storyline again and great characters. Ready for book 3.
