With Jeremy/Luke and all of their shapeshifting friends now protecting Julia 24/7, Xavier and Luke have formed a reluctant truce. Julia continues to work on her newly discovered shapeshifting abilities; the ones that will help her to become what is predicted to be the most powerful shapeshifter. Meanwhile she has to continue balancing her new world while still struggling to finish high school, deaf and keep that life hidden from Jill, Helen, and her mom. Though life is not turning out to be quite as Julia pictured it, she is beginning to come to terms with the fact that she is inexplicably tied, forever, to Xavier. Though he is still the most frustrating guy she has ever met, he is also, undeniably, the sexiest. Bonding is becoming less of a chore and more of a pleasure for them both. Just when things start to calm down, she has trouble on the farm when one of her favorite calves goes missing. It starts a chain of events that will bring Julia closer to ending “The Others”, while revealing that all of her friends, from both worlds have been keeping secrets. Secrets so big, they leave Julia….breathless.

If I could time travel, I'd go into the future and read this complete series...
Julia is bonded to Xavier and Luke (or Jeremy as she prefers)... She is slowly gaining control over her shifter powers, though driving is still beyond her skill...
Xavier must choose between the devil and the deep sea... On the one hand is his bond with Julia, and that he is falling in love with her... On the other is that he is a future Other, just as his dad is now... and Julia the Chosen is the arch enemy of the others... His character arc is quite interesting, and I can't wait to see how this plays out...
Luke has bonded with another girl too, and it might complicate things even further...
As the shapeshifters come together to protect Julia from the Others... Julia is also dealing with Brian coming into powers of his own, her complicated feelings towards her dad who abandoned her family, Dr Hemstreet who always seems around, and protecting Jill from Madeline...
Julia can't say who her friends are and not, since the Others are able to keep track of her life with ease... The book ended on a cliffhanger that sent a chill down my spine...
When does Book 4 release?
Querus Books shared a copy of this book with me in exchange for a candid review.
This series just keeps getting better and better!! It’s been a long time since I sat down to read a book and didn’t get up until I finished it….but that happened with this third installment in The Restless series! I could…not…put…it…down!! I feel like with each consecutive book, the action and the stakes just keep getting higher for Julia, Jeremy/Luke, Xavier and the rest of the crew. I can’t wait for Book 4!!
Things were getting good real fast! I wanted to protect Julia, she is placed in a scary and confusing situation. I know that she has Xavier and Luke, but she keeps getting hit by truth after truth…
My favourite part was when she stood up to Madeline, our girl is stronger now and she is gonna protect everyone!! I am so proud of her!
I thought the book was going at a quite fast pace, but imagine my surprise when we get a cliffhanger?? I have so many questions and I am not ready to say goodbye… We will be hit with a lot of drama, things no one saw coming and heartbreaking scenes.
I have to say, Breathless didn’t quite hold up to the standards set by the previous two books. I still enjoyed it; it’s a fast read and I’m still invested in the overall series. I want to know what happens. But this third book in the series definitely isn’t my favorite of the bunch.
First, I’ll go into the reason why I’m still invested in the series. The one thing Cates excels at is dropping bombs on the reader. She doesn’t let up in Breathless. Aside from a slew of small reveals that kept the pace going throughout, there are two specific ones that got the “What???” face out of me. I won’t spoil them here, but they’re good. Trust me.
And it’s only taken me three books (lol), but I think I’ve finally figured out why Cates bomb drops work so well. Why I never see them coming. She builds up an easy going, mundane world. And yeah, there are shifters and Julia’s one of them, but otherwise life is very – regular. It’s comfortable to just groove along with these characters, so you think you have it all figured out. You almost forget you’re in a fantasy world because it feels like regular old high school stuff.
But then, BIG REVEAL. And you smack yourself in the head, because of course this other thing would happen. Of course it would. Because this isn’t a regular world, this is a place where shape shifters can hear each others thoughts, look like anyone (or anything), and even change the appearance of rooms.
So even though the story is there, even though the pace is quick and the investment is real, this book still fell a little flat. And I think this time Cates’ inexperience as a writer is the culprit. Because she had all the right ingredients, with none of the build up.
The first big “What???” landed perfectly, but it went nowhere. I thought for sure we would get a whole Thing happening after such a big bombshell, but Julia brushed it off like it was nothing, and went on about her life like she didn’t learn something huge and life changing.
The second big “What???” came out of nowhere. I agree with the turn of events. Plot wise, of course that’s what would happen. It all makes sense, even though I didn’t see it coming. And that’s what you want.
But the way it was revealed was very… off hand. “Oh yeah, and this other thing happened off screen. Okay, the end.”
I wanted so much more from that reveal, especially considering the genre. (Man, it is HARD to not give hints, lol!) But that was one “beat” that should have been included in a big way. It should have been on the page to give the reader a chance to really feel the shock and surprise for themselves. I should have been able to experience it myself, and instead I got told about it afterward, when all the shock was already wearing off for the characters involved.
(Sad trombone noise.)
What Others? This coupled with the usual slew of typos and rushed pacing, and Breathless simply wasn’t my favorite. We got a little more of Jill, but not much. All of her drama was just to service Julia’s character. I love Madeline’s whole bitchy attitude, and I’m looking forward to seeing how that will progress in the next book.
I’m getting a bit fuzzy on the general threat of The Others. I’m not exactly sure why they’re “other” or what they’re doing ever. They just kind of – exist. They’re out there, looming, providing some sense of indefinable doom for Julia to fight eventually. I’m not 100% sure on how they came to be in the first place, why they don’t get along with other shape shifters, and what their goals are. I expect some of those questions will get answered in later books, but by book 3, that stuff should be coming into focus already.
So far as our love triangle goes, I am quite pleased with the turnout so far. I won’t say anything at all on that topic, just know I found it satisfying within this book, and there’s still room to grow it further. Nice job on that.
Another fabulous installment to the Speechless series.
This is the 3rd book in the series and I just can't get enough of it. There are spoilers so don't read if you do not want to be spoiled!
You are following Julia along her journey when her world has been turned upside down. She is deaf after having an accident when she was younger. We also find out that she can hear certain people from the first book. This immediately sparks Julia's interest in finding out why.
Throughout her quest to find out what is going on with her and who she truly is she becomes bonded to Xavier. This is suppose to be something that is very rare but it has happened to him. He is training to becoming an Other, who Julia is destined to end.
She has her best friend Jeremy, who is actually Luke. She always leans on him for support, comfort and answers. However after the 2nd book's ending where Xavier acts like her to keep her out of the clutches from The Others, she is finding out now that Jeremy isn't being fully transparent with her. He is hiding things and she is starting to get discouraged.
When her and Xavier start becoming closer The Others make another appearance and steal a calf that is Julia's favorite. We later find out how Xavier betrays her and it is gut wrenching. Julia then decides to ignore Xavier because she is so upset with him and goes on a day trip with Jeremy. When they bond everything gets thrown to the floor from what they thought they knew. The bond is suppose to be rare but now she is bonded to 2 different guys? Now she doesn't know what to do.
When she finally tells Xavier he is so upset with her that he decides to take matters into his own hands. He is ignoring Julia and really making it hurt for her.
This cliffhanger had me screaming at my book because I wanted to immediately know what was going on!
If you love a fast paced read, something you can grab a cup of coffee/tea and just lounge around and read then this is the book for you. If you love YA, Paranormal, Romance or all 3 together then you must read this.
Julia is deaf and navigating the day to day social interactions of high school teenagers dealing with the drama of self discovery and growing up with the added disadvantage of having no privacy because of her aide. On top of all that she has powers she doesn't know how to use and she's a shifter. In Reckless the Others came for Julia but they took a transformed Xavier in her place. We learn Julia's father has been close all along - he's the vet. In Breathless Xavier has mysteriously returned, Julia is once again at school with Luke and facing down Madeline. She still wants answers for what's happening to her but refuses to talk to the very people who can provide them for her. One minute she's running into her father's arms and the next avoiding him and refusing to hear what he has to say. Then she's having lunch or dinner with him and her brother Brian. I'm a bit confused about the character of Jeremy. Initially Luke was Jeremey but now it seems that Xavier is also Jeremy and so is any other shifter who wants to transform into him. This book deals more with the relationships of the characters, provides some insight into the prophecy and the Others. Julia is told that she may be the Chosen of the the prophecy but is unsure of her place in it. It seems that everyone else protecting her is unsure as well. The only thing really known is that she is supposed to "end the Others". Sadly, there are still parts that leave the reader with as many questions as Julia has and need more development. What happened to Xavier when he was taken? How did he return?
There are a lot of twists in this series. All of the books contain intrigue, romance, and danger of course but there are also elements of racism and prejudice. There are still grammatical errors but they are not so plentiful that they distract from the story.
Julia is being protected by Jermy/Luke and the shapeshifter gang 24/7. Xavier and Luke are not happy with the arrangement but have come to a truce. Julia needs to continue to work on her shifting abilities.
What I liked about the book was how easy it was to drop into Julia's world. I also really loved reading from Xavier's perspective. It is easy to forget that Julia is still in high school and deaf to everyone except shifters. I really like that Julia is into the "bad boy" and the story doesn't go the traditional route.
Overall, be prepared to read right through this book. I couldn't put it down and I was very surprised by a twist at the end. Breathless left me on a huge cliffhanger. I cannot wait until the next book in the series comes out! I highly recommend this series (start from book 1- Speechless).
One thing I’m loving about the series is that each book picks up immediately where you leave off. 𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 continues with Julia, Jeremey/Luke, and Xavier trying to dodge The Others while figuring out how Julia is supposed to “save the day” if you will.
If you recall, Julia is hearing impaired, but found out that she can hear her shapeshifter friends. Imagine trying to keep that from your friends and family when you’re not able to hear them. In Breathless, some of the secrets come out and Julia learns that she may not be the only one.
What I’m loving is the enemies to budding romance that’s happening. I mean it’s getting strong with talking forever love. However, there may be little monkey wrenches thrown in there.
Yes, I’m being really vague because I don’t want to spill all the tea if you haven’t had a chance to start the series, but just know… We leave off with another cliffhanger!! So…that means 𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑏𝑜𝑜𝑘 4 coming🎉🎉
I ate this book up in two days! No matter what I did I literally couldn't stop reading. There were so many secrets revealed that just layered more secrets into the plot and it was so intricately done. I rated this book 4.5 stars because there was some animal cruelty I wasn't expecting. It matched into the lore and was a major tipping point for characterization but definitely not something I liked to read. I was impressed by the character growth and the steady-going plot as well as the overall lore of the shape-shifting world. If you are someone who loves deep characterization as well as budding romance you definitely need to read this series!
Another twist, another book in the series. Personally, I usually get series fatigue at about book 2 to 3. Usually in my experience the series moves into the second couple trouble arc, and I hate that. This book 3 still held my interest and avoided that trouble arc, continuing the same plot forward but not in a "boy is this dragging" way. It held my interest, it kept me reading. PS, do not read this if you like the sex scenes, there have been none, but I you like romance and enemies to lovers, you will like this.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This really took the book to a new level an induction in to the others. More connections in to the bond. A bet down with powers emerging,.a.sacrifices, a revelation, family bonding, truths revealed and enemies coming. That ending left us hanging. This was one of my favourite so far. Amazing characters, an exciting storyline and a wonderful world builder.

What can I say that I haven't said about the Ava Cates books. I thoroughly love the characters who are absolutely relatable. I found a couple of transition problems, but I went back and found where they were and caught myself back up. I loved the story line and characters so much that I moved past them and kept going. I can't stop myself from wanting to know more, wanting to help more and wanting the forbidden love to flourish even more. Go Ms Ava, keep going!
I don't know why, but I thought this was the final book in the series. How am I going to go on without knowing what happens next? I need more. Now!
Once again, Ava does a fantastic job of fleshing out her characters and making me fall more in love with them. The twists and turns left me on edge throughout the book.
Talk about a cliffhanger. I'm here on the edge of my seat dying to know what happens next. Ava Cates delivers an amazing addition to this series. The story continues to follow Julia and her shapeshifter friends who are trying to protect her from the Others. We get a few surprises revealed in this third book, some that will leave you shocked.
The twists keep coming and coming! I can't believe it. The love that blooms is beautiful and the other is a shock. I didn't expect the ending at all and I'm so sad it wasn't longer. It's an amazing story. I can't get enough!
There is so much going on here that my head was spinning. Everyone in the shapeshifting world is protecting Julia. Julia has some newly discovered shapeshifting abilities and is practicing them, hopefully preparing her for the prediction that she will be the most powerful shapeshifter. She is definitely tied now to Xavier, but he betrays her later.
As it looks like things are calming, there is a problem on the farm where one of her favorite calves goes missing at the hands of The Others. Julia also becomes aware that many friends are still keeping big secrets.
I love the twists and turns we are taken through in this story line that won’t let go! The surprises keep coming and I’m eager for the next book!
Five things to love about this series: 📚 Multiple POV 📚 slow burn YA steamy 🌶 📚 Fans of Shadowhunters and Darkest Minds will love this series 📚 Enemies to Lovers and love triangle! 📚fast paced read ; easy to read complete three books in a weekend
Where I enjoyed the first two books , the characters in the third book had more depth. Julia no longer was unsure of herself, her abilities were both a surprise and creative. With the third book , Xavier decided to go big or go home; (without spoilers ) I didnt like Xavier before this book . He seemed to have an over abundant ego, but he had changed, matured and became devoted to Julia. The change in the story flow adding each perspective you began to feel more for each character, even Madeline whose tough personality even softened. Book three bad more suspense and plot structure, with a cliffhanger that had me emailing the author for the date book 4 would be released.
If you enjoyed the love triangle of The Infernal Devices, the chosen Parabatai, the Mark that appears on Julia will give you all the feels. Will she chose Luke or Xavier? You must read and find out.
