Campfire Tales Beneath a Pallid Moon

Rate this book
What awaits John Hunter at the mysterious shores of that whispered mountain lake? What is that stalking in the shadows of the trees watching his every move? Find out in FORBIDDEN LAKE.

Cliff Lindon and his daughter can't wait to go camping. But his wife and two sons don't share that enthusiasm. Setting up camp, Cliff takes to the lake, something strange occurs on those black waters. What is that funny thing on the end of his hook? What horror awaits the Lindon family in LIVE BAIT?

A family of four set up camp after a long day of hiking. While the kids bed down for the night, Kevin and Rebecca Miller, enjoy some quiet time alongside the heat of the fire. But their peace is interrupted by a strange figure who happens upon them out of the dark in the UNSEEN.

Dillon drags his girlfriend, Lucy, on a midnight foray into the dark woods, to a small lake rumored to be near. High above in the starlight, a curious moon follows their path. And as they reach the lakes stygian waters, something awaits their arrival in BENEATH A PALLID MOON.

Tammy and Justin, far removed from the trail, fight against a troubling storm that opens the skies in a cyclonic frenzy. Seeking shelter, a cabin reveals itself in the distance. The residing old hermit is their only help to put them back on track in LOST.

Something hideous awaits the children in the shadows. It comes to the door when it is hungry. The children dread its approach. This wasn't the summer they were expecting in SUMMER CAMP.

An homage to pulp action/horror: a strain of diabolical ingenuity is spilled into a brook just outside a popular campground. Soldiers are dispatched to contain the area. But now it's too late, and their numbers too many, in NIGHT OF THE MUTATED MOSQUITOS.

The mind is a vessel for all things cloaked in shadows. But are those shadows the absence of light? Or something more sinister? Find out in the closing story ITS JUST THE WIND.

Beneath a nebulous canopy of gleaming vistas, a pallid moon hangs above. The landscape dreams, things crawl and lurk in those gloomy places.

Campfire Tales Beneath a Pallid Moon: a collection of nightmare horror. From sanguine-eyed things shambling in the dark to the lone hiker aware of being stalked. An anthology of splattering horror to read around the campfire.

I really enjoyed this book. I usually don't do anthologies, but I absolutely love horror books that involve camping, hiking, summer camps and being out in the woods. And with every one of the stories being one of the above, I decided to give it a try. The only thing I hated was that not a single one had a happy ending, and that bummed me out on the ones that involved kids. But that's not his style as Brian Berry says and that's ok. Some horror stories do need bad endings. I just hate stories and books where children die.

Having never read any of Brian Berry's work, I really had no idea what to expect from Campfire Tales Beneath a Pallid Moon. I read a brief synopsis, and was eager to download and sink my teeth into it.

I was immediately at home with his style of story telling. Each story in this collection is an absolute home run. This could not have been more appropriately named either, as I could honestly hear these tales as if they were being told to me around a Campfire.

I read this book while sitting in a treestand, and every snapped twig and rustling squirrel had my imagination running wild on me. I have already added more by Berry onto my kindle and cannot wait to tear into them.

Excellent collection of horror stories!

Berry's chief strength is his ability to bring the the texture and atmosphere of the forest alive in these campfire tales. As you read, you're there with the characters. You feel what they feel and see what they see. He also shows his talent when isolating moments of terror. In the first story, Forbidden Lake, the moment when the protagonist finds that his campfire has been fueled as he slept comes to mind.

Creepy, yes, but this is also a fun collection. The author had a good time writing these stories, and that feeling is apparent throughout.

Unfortunately when a collection of tales revolve around one specific subject - in this case, camping - they run the risk of being a bit "samey". I felt this is what happened here. It's only the latter stories that changed and piqued my interest.

I felt the first two stories dragged quite a bit and i wasn't as captured by the stories as i thought i was gonna be. I think this has to do with the writing - there's only so many ways to describe the dark trees that surround a person, or the moonlight, or the creepy noises - and they were too "fluffed up" with adjectives and similies.

Im by no means a grammar expert but in a collection of stories, things like this become apparent, and quite tiring.

I will say though - the horror aspect is well done, certainly pulls no punches that's for sure. Plenty of blood and gore. Expect no happy endings!

I'm so glad I bought this! Brian Berry never lets me down with his storytelling. I highly recommend this any fan of horror and thrills. I stayed up all night enjoying each unique story. Horror stories in different well described settings you would find if you went camping. My favorite story is hard to choose. I loved them all so much. Always clever with his stories. The one with the friendly Park Ranger, Brian always delivers something special. Read it!
