I am a huge fan of this series and have listened to multiple audiobooks in this "universe." I haven't had a chance to read the three books that aren't on audio yet, but since Jorah was one of my favorite characters, I jumped at the chance to review this ebook. In my opinion, is is probably best to read The Ellwood Chronicles and The Brinnswick Chronicles in order, but I was able to read this having missed a few books. However, now I definitely know I need to check those books out.
This book and series are full of action and drama and magic. At the beginning of this book, it has been ten years since Jorah, the bravest and smartest fourteen-year-old witch, disappeared into a portal to the fae world with his brothers Thayer and Basil and their two guardians, and it’s been seven, since the boys returned. Basil and Thayer have already met their viramores (soulmates) and now it’s time for Jorah to do the same.
Jorah is still brainy and brave, and now he holds the power of three with his brothers, a pure and strong magic that takes three people to balance it out otherwise it might be used for bad. While visiting the Fae world to keep the power in check, Jorah is hit with intense fear and pain that pulls him and his coven members to a darker part of the kingdom. And he knows the reason he feels all the feels so strongly is because it is his viramore.
Laiken is a siren, and unfortunately the last of his kind. The drow, a group of dark fairies, have hunted Laiken’s species to extinction and are using him to find a long-lost treasure before they eliminate him as well. Until Jorah and some of his coven members show up and rescue him in a daring fight. One they don’t quite win. The drow are a formidable group to fight, with large numbers and the ability to travel in a mist. After his rescue, it takes a long time for Laiken to trust Jorah and his family even though he feels the pull toward Jorah and knows they belong together.
While I love Jorah from the previous books, I immediately wanted to comfort Laiken who is dealing with guilt and sorrow. I am just glad the two found each other, because they seem to complement each other so well. But it was no easy feat to be sure as I thought they both might not live past the middle of the book. I was so worried, despite it being a romance that I was sure would have a happy ending, that I was brought to tears.
So, after that scare, the drow find another way to attack the Ellwood pack that Jorah belongs to. It was a crazy, action packed novel that had me on the edge of my seat. I know that I missed a few books, but I felt like the drow were the hardest enemies that this group has come across yet. And though, the drow pirate captain that held Laiken meets his end in this book, there is more to come with the enemy species because their king is still trying to take over Faela and the power of three. Talon, one of the two guardians of the three is going to be at the heart of the next book. And I anticipate it being just as action filled and dangerous to my heart.
Oh my goodness, I feel like I have shared so much, but hopefully not too much. I still feel like I need to mention Jorah’s awesome family. Witches, an enchanter, vampires, a half-wolf-half-cyclops, and fae, to name a few, make up this loyal and powerful family. Not to mention the bonded magical animals that protect the family. The way they always work together and don’t hold back with their affection makes them all so loveable and they round the book and the series out. I can’t recommend it enough.
