A charming Parisian brasserie, a buried secret and a winding labyrinth of clues come together to form a terrifying triumvirate of mystery and shocking desire in the seventh An American in Paris Mystery . The American owner of a popular Left Bank eatery is arrested for his wife’s murder. Claire Baskerville, an American expat in Paris, must work quickly to find the real killer in order to return her grieving client to his two small children as soon as possible. The twist? The more she investigates, the more it starts to look as if her client really did it. This book is a clean no graphic violence, sex or strong Mystery/thriller, women amateur sleuth, cozy animal (dog)
As co-owners of a popular restaurant in Paris, Carl and Debbie Mention were at odds when their divorce finally came down. But, did Carl really murder Debbie? Claire Baskerville, the detective, who initially found proof that Carl had been cheating, is now on the opposite side, looking for evidence to clear Carl. Though Claire thinks the womanizer is a scumbag, she can't picture him as a killer. Two young children are at risk of losing both parents giving Claire the impetus to resolve the case.
The first chapter of this book had me completely absorbed and I remained hooked until the last page. I've followed this series since its inception; Claire has become a role model to me and an inspiration to make more of life. Meanwhile, I greedily devour the pages and enjoy the wonderful world that Susan Kiernan-Lewis has created.
A little grittier than a cosy, this series is addictive. Highly recommended.
I’d give all of the books in this series 3.75 stars, because while they are engaging, with likable/interesting and well-rounded characters, they all have typos and other editing errors (various different spellings for characters’ names, inconsistent timing in relation to characters’ stated ages in the different books in the series, etc.).
I think I have read almost all of Susan Kieran-Lewis’s book. Claire Baskerville mysteries are my favorite (so far) and maybe because I am in my 70s and wish I were her neighbor! Claire is so brave and also so human!
I have enjoyed this series for many reasons. I read for pleasure and not with the intent of ferreting out as many flaws as possible to publicize.
The books in this series have had engaging stories and the descriptions of life in Paris are very interesting to someone like me who has never lived in a large city. The main character is very relatable. Claire is not a super woman but she is hardworking and diligent. Life has dealt her a less than ideal hand to play but she makes the best of it. She makes mistakes but she works to overcome them. She likes having a man in her life but she isn't obsessed with him. I appreciate her focus on her priorities when things get complicated.
I look forward to the next book in the series to see how Claire handles the next challenge.
This is definitely not a stand alone volume although I was reading it without the benefit of having read the previous novels. So much information squeezed into the first few chapters and so many names. Very confusing!
After that the story came easier. Again it’s based on the previous stories.
The tale wasn’t good enough to make me want to go back and read the previous volumes
And if she said once more that the kid she’s raising was adorable, cute, precious, precocious and perfect I think I would have been ill.
This is the second book that I've read in this series.
Claire is a private detective and she is asked to find the real killer of her client's wife. The client is the prime suspect. He had been cheating on his wife (and Claire had uncovered that for the wife).
Unlike a lot of books, Claire is 64 and so she has a different style to most investigators.
This was ok. It really wasn’t as good as 1,2,5, and 6. This one revolves around some fringe characters, so it was a bit less riveting. Also, I am not sure I’m on board with where the future plot is going to go — it’s a bit far-fetched, even for this series. But, I’m sure I’ll read #8, anyway!
Paris is intriguing and so are these books which are all based in Paris. Reading about places that I've actually seen in person makes me feel like I'm back there again!
Once again Susan has outdone herself. Each book just gets better and better. I love how she casts doubt with all the characters so the culprit is never an easy guess. And I am so happy that Jean-Marc is back in the picture!
I am a big fan of this series that takes place in Paris. In this one, ex-pat Claire is hired to find out who murdered the co-owner of a local bistro. . The husband is arrested but there are several others that she must investigate to find out the truth. Kept me guessing til the end
I thought this was an excellent mystery to read as you really didn’t know “who Dunn it” till the end. The characters were like real people too with problems too.
