This was an epic read full of action. I really liked it but I wish there was more romance. Ghislaine and Gaetan get together at 71% and only for a brief moment. They do say they love each other, but I really needed more of them together as a couple. That’s why this wasn’t a 5 star read for me.

Re-reading.

Original review still stands:

"The Wolfe" has always been my favorite book. It is 909-pages, jammed packed with action, characters that you can't help fall in love with, a sweet, wonderful romance and William de Wolfe. I have read "The Wolfe" five times. I never tire of it. It never gets old. I am merely visiting with friends that I miss. And, it never fails to put a smile on my face. It is that kind of book.

After my first reading of "The Wolfe," I had to see if this was just a fluke and if the author, Kathryn Le Veque, was really that good. I went through all the books the author had written in record time. Yep. She was really THAT good! During my reading journey, I came to learn about all the houses and families that made up Le Veque World. So many books have generations that spring from early books, with names that have become so familiar. Each and every book was a joy to read. All of the characters, with heroes, the heroines, the supporting characters, quickly became familiar friends. I, quite simply, devoured them. I have read all of the books many times now. However, I always wanted to read about the origins of all those great houses in Le Veque World: De Wolfe, de Russe, de Lohr, Wellsbourne, de Lara, de Moray, de Reyne, de Winter, St. Hever and du Reims. And, just how did the de Shera brothers (The Lords of Thunder) have Roman ancestors and how did that figure into the big picture? This book has all the answers. And, those answers were beyond satisfying. They were spectacular!

I'm not going to do another synopsis of the book as it has already been done by those reviewers before me. I am simply going to say this. Warwolfe is must reading for any fan of Kathryn Le Veque. Warwolfe is must reading for anyone who loves a medieval romance for the ages. Warwolfe is must reading for anyone who loves adventure, mystery and history. Warwolfe is must reading for anyone who enjoys reading about loyalty and honor when it really meant something. Warwolfe is must reading for anyone who believes women are strong, incredibly brace in the face of mind-numbing fear, selfless, and warriors in their own right who can hold their own. Warwolfe is must reading for anyone who wants to read about a brave group of warriors who had a friendship and a bond unlike any other. As Kathryn Le Veque states "a true band of brothers."

Did I like it? Oh, no. I LOVED it!

A great prequel! It takes place during the Norman Conquest. So all the other families are in it and it shows how they got their positions in history.

I loved the h! She is such a badass! The two made a very passionate pair.

I highly recommend! I also recommend reading The Wolfe, since it's the best book in the series.

Despite the washboard abs on the front cover, Warwolfe is not an erotic romance book. It's not a bodice ripper, it's not a trashy Johanna Lindsey romance, and it's barely even a romance at all. This is primarily a medieval historical fiction book with battles and journeys and maybe 8% romance, and I was surprisingly into it.

We start at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 between the Norman army & the Anglo-Saxon defenders in England and that entire battle scene had me 100% engaged. That's how I knew I was in for something that would break my book slump.

THE GOOD
1) The writing was engaging, unexpectedly so. True, the descriptions of battles and traveling for weeks reminded me of the kind of patient detail Diana Gabaldon or Tolkien would take, but I was hardly restless with it. I say hardly restless because by the 85% mark I skimmed a chapter or two -- I wanted it over.

2) Ghislaine was an extremely likeable warrior woman. She's brave in the midst of her obvious fear, she's smart and sensible, and she felt realistic.

3) Gaetan de Wolfe was also a likeable character. As the lead of an elite group of nine invincible Norman-French warriors, he's huge and powerful without being an overly dominant asshat like most other medieval male leads.

4) That initial Battle of Hastings was pretty gripping and gritty to read.

5) Felt like a solid medieval historical.

THE BAD
1) For being 453 pages, not a whole lot of tangible plot points occurred throughout this book. It felt like a character story and a traveling story in large part, which I wasn't terribly upset about because I enjoyed the journey so much, but it did make me wish for more action. It also made me wary to head the next book, which I hear is almost 3x as long.

2) There wasn't much romance in this book but the bit that did occur in the last third wasn't noticeably fantastic. The slow-burn enemies-turned-lovers factor was so subtle and enjoyable to read that by the time the characters revealed their feelings for each other, it all felt underwhelming. Definitely was not a strong part of the book.

3) Wouldn't mind drawing out Alary's pain a little more.

4) That cover needs to go. Not a single person -- man or woman -- is sexualized in this book except for the front cover. It's barely a historical romance with perhaps two total pages of a hard PG-13 sex scene, but the cover image makes you think you're in for a trashy medieval romance novel.

FINAL THOUGHTS
I'm on a bit of a medieval and historical kick, so this was the perfect book to read. I could barely put it down and stayed up late to finish it in two days -- that's how intrigued I was by the historical depiction. It had the same grit and medieval realism as any of the Dark Triumph books by Robin LaFevers with the rich historical factor of a Gabaldon book.

Still unsure about continuing. Skimming would do this book's warm writing a disservice, but I don't know if I can handle the next book's 1,000+ page novel if it's lacking the same action as this book.

I have been eager to try this author for quite some time now, especially since her writing is focused on medieval era's and I just gravitate toward authors that go away from the norm (meaning regency or victorian era) and writes something more unconventional. However the covers of her books aren't exactly my favorite, however, I decided that I needed to jump in the water with her and just take a chance and I am so thrilled that I decided to try this author. This book was SO different from what I was actually expecting but I found it so refreshing and unique and I would like to mention the narrator first off. He was BRILLIANT!! There is so much depth and so many side characters and he has this talent to create so many unique tones of his voice for all sorts of characters and I don't think I have ever listened to a narrator that has this ability....so BRAVO and I will be looking into more books that he has narrated. :)

The story starts off in the modern era, featuring a young woman, Abigail Devlin. She is working on her graduate thesis which her expertise deals with medieval history. Through her research, she comes across a new knowledge of a story that is unknown and kept from the world. Of the bravery and courage of the unsung heroes of the Norman invasion. This is where Abigail wants to learn of their story and convinces an old man who has kept the truth to himself and is willing to share the story of these brave knights and the beginnings of the de Wolf Pack.
These men literally risked their lives for a colleague, just to rescue the man, and that’s a kind of heroism that is largely lost these days. People have forgotten what it means to love your friends like these men loved each other. I think that’s the greatest thing I took away from this whole project – the love these knights had for each other. They were the original band of brothers.

We are taken back through time to 1066 A.D, where we see the beginning of The Duke of Normandy conquering England. We see a group of brave knights, a band of brothers, who will fight and defend each other no matter what. They have a unique relationship, their bonds to each other are stronger than friends....stronger than family. But they have a leader, a legend who is the right-hand man of the Duke of Normandy. His name is Warwolfe. Gaetan de Wolfe is a powerful leader and commander, during the fighting, Gaetan comes across a Saxon, a woman with great fighting skills and he lets her live and asks that she remembers Norman Mercy. Shortly after the first battle against the Saxon's, he notices that his closest friend is missing and he worries that his friend has been captured.

Ghislaine of Mercia , has been training all of her life to be a warrior. It is normal for those in her family, she has a few brothers, one of whom is literally insane and not right in the head. She doesn't get along too well with him and tries to keep her distance. But when she captures a Norman knight to be used for information and her half-brother finds out and takes the knight from her, she knows his life is in jeopardy. She has learned much from this knight, and that he is noble and has a good heart with a beautiful wife and a baby daughter he has never met. And she remembers the words from the dangerous man she ran across that spared her life "to remember Norman mercy" and she knows that she owes a debt. So she leaves the encampment to go in search of this Knights, brothers in arms, most especially the "Warwolfe" who is his closest friend and this is where Ghislaine meets the Warwolfe and sees the man and not just the warrior but she also recognizes the bond that these group of warriors and knights have for each other and the lengths that they are willing to go through to save their friend from torture.

While on the journey of chasing after Ghislaine's half-brother, both Ghislaine and Gaetan find themselves drawn to each other and discovering a hidden passion and a true love worth fighting for. Both are warriors at heart and have a sense of honor and duty. We see how Ghislaine comes to respect these Norman knights and starts to look at the world with less black and white and bit more grey. These two go through some hardships and challenges but honestly I loved seeing them find their own happy ever after which was so riveting and compelling. Their story was truly so well written, that I felt as if I was a part of their beautiful story.

I have to say that this story was so in depth and well developed and I can't believe I haven't picked up this author before now. If you love historical romance and most especially, stories set in the medieval ages, this author is a must-read. I found this story to be so sweet at times. Not what you expect from a romance that takes place with so much war and fighting going on. But we get to see the true goodness and hearts of men and women that lived in this time frame. We see how much honor there really was, but I also loved how well balanced it felt. It didn't feel modernized AT ALL but many readers would adore these books because I loved seeing how these men looked at women even back then. Especially these knights, were demeaning or harsh towards women and they definitely fell in love with Ghislaine pretty quickly. She is compassionate but a fighter and strong-willed just as they are. Gaetan is honorable yet kind and a true champion of Ghislaine's and is willing to do anything to make sure she is safe and happy and wants her fighting and loving by his side.

The historical context was BRILLIANTLY DONE and I was so so impressed with seeing the evidence of this author's research into this era and she definitely knows her stuff. I am a big history buff, however, I felt like I was walking into a new world once I started reading this book, it was such an endearing and mind blown experience and I can't wait for more.

At first I thought this was going to be all fighting but when the romance started it was very good. Well fleshed characters and a great story. Will read some of the other books from this author but not all of them as they may be too similar, she writes well though.

Boring...Snooze fest...could not finish

I thought Kathryn LeVeque had a reputation for writing exciting romance novels. This one was horribly dull. Yes it's nice to know author did enough historical research to make story plausible but my goodness I hardly needed a dissertation on the battle of Hastings. Nor did I need the prologue and epilogue to be about a nervous college grad in modern times. And don't get me started on the 10 mind you, 10 of these grand ferocious knights. I could barely keep track of their names much less cared about their various special warlike traits and how they interacted with the hero and heroine. Hardly any time spent on the building relationship of our main characters. So sorry I wasted half the day with this story.
To be honest I could only read it at twenty or so minutes at a time then I would play Candy Crush then I'd read some more. Finally gave up at 50 percent. I'm done.

I listened to the audio version of this book. The narrator brad Wills was wonderful and his voices for all the warriors was perfect. Especially the male lead! The female voices weren't quite as good of course and he did a great job nonetheless. An engaging story with about 5% romance and the rest action set in 1066 England. Ms Le Veque tells a marvelous tale and every second of the story was interesting. Loved it! 4.5 stars.

So Well Told

This brilliant author always has the ability to transport me to be directly in the midst of things when I read her books. I feel like as I am reading I have gently landed right into the story so that I can live each moment with all of these wonderful characters. Very few authors can do that in my eyes. Gaston and Grislaine's story was so well told. Not only was it their story, but the story of the Anges de Guerre, Angels of War.

Gaeton de Wolfe is the Duke of Normandy's "Warwolfe" The head of his enormous army who has a tactical mastermind envied by many He also has nine knights who together with himself, make up the Angeles of War. These are not only knights, but they are brothers to one another. No sacrifice is too great for any of them when it comes to one another. Gaston takes on an important mission for the Duke of Normandy. He is astonished to encounter a Warrior Women who he shows mercy to. He also endures an enormous blow to his Angeles of War. These Angels of War do not give up on one another.

Ghislaine of Mercia has known nothing else than being a Warrior. She was trained from a very young age. She can best and hold her own against an enemy or any other warrior for that matter. She is completely taken aback when an enormous Norman Knight captures her, but then shows her mercy. She does not get to see him though. Ghislaine also has an evil exhiled brother who is the devil incarnate. He is dangerously mad.

There is so much to this story, and I don't want to giveaway too much. Pick it up you will love it. The bond of this unique brotherhood is felt and lived throughout this story, while two warrior hearts connect.

I loved this story! This time my tears came towards the end. A brilliant storyteller is this author. Uniquely superb. This story keeps you on your toes!

I got to 75% on this book and had to call it a day. First off the author says it’s a historical romance, it took a very very long time for there to even be a hint of a romance. Next we have a female warrior who breaks down crying every five minutes and a hero who is a bit of a misogynist (okay they probably were in that day and age- I’ll let the author off!) I felt the plot was all over the place, we are still trying to find Krisoff at 80% in and I’m getting a bit fed up now, so hence I’ve called it a day.

WarWolfe was my “Maiden” novel read from author Kathryn Le Veque. My thoughts...I was worried when I started reading and it was about a college student doing research for her historical thesis. My first thought was this was going to be a time travel novel which are not my favorite choice of books. But, I kept going and I’m so glad I did!!! It is NOT a time travel! Happy dance! Then the Medieval storyline came alive with attractive and complex characters at the start of the Norman occupation of the Anglo-Saxons in Britain. The storyline is well written rich with history, adventure, danger, intrigue, brotherhood connections, and sacrifice, with an unlikely romance between enemies. There was one mild sex scene and no rough language. I recommend this book and look forward to the next story in this series including other novels from this author.

I had a problem with the history side of things - I know too much about it to accept inaccuracies. The characters acted way to modern for me. Also, the sudden shift in the attraction/interest/feelings between the main characters was too abrupt. Went from "we're suspicious of each other and wary" to "i would die for you" much to quickly. I understand its a romance novel but......

Sometimes, you just know. The spark or feeling that starts and doesn't end. Gaetan and Ghislaine had that.

They are the foundation of the series. Although not in the book as much as I would like. This book showed me so much about the time period. It is a great read for men and women.

As I read further into the Le Veque’s mighty library of Medieval stories of adventure, passion, honor, and battle, I'm ready to slide into her world all over again.

She’s a prolific writer who entertains with battle scenes, knight camaraderie, humor, and poignant moments.  Her series overlap so much with characters from previous ones, the joy of old friends, the rich understanding of historical events and her developed characterization is thoroughly captivating.

In this book, the de Wolfe pack has its beginnings. The house of de Wolfe, de Lohr, de Russe, de Reyne, de Moray, De Winter, de Lara, St. Hever, du Reims and Wellesbourne.

I love how the story starts.  In present day, Abigail Devlin, an American student working on her Ph.D. dissertation in Medieval history at the University of Birmingham is presented the opportunity to learn about the men who support the Duke of Normandy’s push into England.  She discovers a goldmine of unpublished historical events, written by a priest Jathan de Guerre. Her dissertation, to unearth who the unsung heroes of the Norman Invasion were and their affect upon the Conquest.

Through the eyes of this character’s journal, detailing the Battle of Hastings and aftermath, Le Veque not only breathes life into historical events, she provides the reader a deep understanding of the kind of friendship, honor and passion between men of like mind and body.  These ten men were known as the Anges de Guerre (Angels of War), Special Forces, if you will, for the Duke of Normandy.  These were the heroes which Le Veque takes through many of her stories.

I always learn something about the Medieval period when I read ‘Medieval Le Veque’.  I learned about the Book of Kells, Medieval Christian calligraphy and took a side trip to Google to see what she was talking about.  Yet, Le Veque seamlessly weaves her magical imagination into the historical period, breathing evocative scenes of purpose, a place where her characters are challenged, whether physically, emotionally or both.

A young woman warrior, Ghislaine of Mercia, sister to a slightly insane half-brother, Alary, finds herself facing the sword tip of Warwolfe, Gaetan de Lohr on the battle field.

He realizes she’s a woman.

“Let me go!” she demanded. “Release me or I will kill you!”

Frankly, Gaetan was shocked that a woman had been in the midst of the battle. It was enough of a shock that he stopped trying to squeeze her throat. “A female?” he said, sounding somewhat incredulous. “What foolish commander allows women to fight?”

She twisted violently and he caught a glimpse of her face; dressed as an archer as she was, including a cap, at a distance she could very easily be mistaken for a boy but now that he was close to her, he could see that she was no boy. In fact, her features were quite exquisite.

“I can kill you just as easily as a man can,” she hissed. “Let me go and I will give you a fair fight, poubelle.”

This scene is a typical spirited response Gaetan would get from this woman when they later meet.  Poubelle isn’t a very flattering French word.  She called him garbage in his own language.

He lets her go and says,

Remember Norman mercy the next time you intend to do one of us harm.

These words stay with her when she returns to camp, to find a prisoner had been taken, a Norman of great stature, and gravely injured.  The prisoner is Kristoph de Lohr, Warwolfe’s closest friend and knight.

The words ring in Ghislaine’s mind.  She has a debt of honor to pay. Her life was spared.  She would spare this knight’s life. Her men understood this debt of honor, but not her insane brother.

The story takes off at a fast clip.  Short of it, Ghislaine takes up with the Normans to help her save the knight, paying her debt of honor, and kill off her brother.

As Gaetan gets to know the woman, these are his thoughts:

He didn’t want to talk to her. He didn’t want to look  at her. He’d kept himself well away from her, and she’d kept herself away from him as well.  He was content. Not happy, but content. But now, here she was, and in looking at her he realized just how much he’d missed her.  Something about his woman was growing on him, inside him, just like a parasite, and he couldn’t shake her no matter how hard he tried.

A parasite, you say, Gaeten?  You will surely see there is no escape.  Once the heart and soul are engaged, you are lost. Fight her, but you won’t succeed!

If you haven’t read any of Le Veque’s work, this would be the book to start with.  Her writing will take you to her enthralling world full of treachery, honor, greed, power and passion. A must-read author if you are a fan of Medieval Historical reads.

What can I say about this book by Ms. Kathryn Le Veque except wow what an amazing book! Ms. Le Veque just seamlessly wrote such a captivating story which pulls you the reader into the deeply riveting involved story but there is such a level of complexity to not only the story telling and how she writes but her characters are very three dimensional plus seem so real that they literally come to life well that and the nicely done cover helps too. Ms. Le Veque is just a wonderful writer and story teller even though I ended up giving this book four stars it isn’t for the lack of creativity, action, romance or that the story isn’t good because it is all that and more. Why then for the four stars because the fact that the story ended and I wanted more into the lives of not only the major but minor characters.
In a battle known as the battle of Hastings in the year 1066 which is a battle to end all battles between Harold Godwinson and the Duke of Normandy there were great men especially one man Gaeten “Gate” de Wolfe who helped the Duke of Normandy plan his strategies and was the tactical mastermind of battle for the Duke. Gaeten and the Duke also had the Angels of War men of battle led by Gaeten himself which went wherever he went and to all battles including this one battle. Still Gaeten, his men and the Duke are victorious winning the battle against the Anglo-Saxons and Harold. While combing the fields and collecting his spoils of war Gaeten is unable to find his friend and colleague Kristoph de Lohr but there is hope a woman known as Ghislaine of Mercia becomes his guide to help him find his friend. Gaeten can’t help his slow growing attraction to Ghislaine will it interfere with his ability to stay on task in finding Kristoph before it is too late.
When I first started reading this book I was excited. I liked the de Wolfe family so I knew I was going to like Gaeten even though he was brash and arrogant that he did kind of intimidate me. Still I was a little charmed by his harsh stance and as the book progressed I did learn to like him and all his rough edges. I just figured he kind of had to be that way since he was a commander of men. Gaeten did have his soft sensitive side and after he acknowledged his feelings for Ghislaine then he became a hero that I couldn’t help but fall for. Ghislaine was just a great heroine not only was she a warrior but she was strong of mind and body. She was willing to even put her life at risk just so she could help Gaeten which even though I balked at her attempts I know if I was in the same situation I would do the same thing. I liked also that she was smart but caring compassionate loving beautiful inside and out. What a wonderful heroine to aspire to be. I think I not only liked Gaeten but I had a little girl crush on Ghislaine too. I would definitely love to read Aramis and Lygia story if Ms. Le Veque ever plans to write it even the rest of the Anges de Guerre guys. After reading this book it will be a definite keeper and one that I will reread again in fact I haven’t stopped rereading it now. I am anxiously awaiting Ms. Le Veque’s next novel and can highly recommend this book despite my rating.

Great characters, lots of emotion and plenty of action adds up to an engaging read

This is only my second book by this author so I still wasn't quite sure what to expect (I'd read The Wolfe first). Note this time period (the Battle of Hastings and the weeks following) is not one I'm very familiar with, so if you're looking for comments on historical accuracy, you're out of luck, lol.

The main story of Gaetan de Wolfe and Ghislaine of Mercia is bookended by scenes set in the current day. While I'm not usually much of a fan of flash backward/flash forward, the author did a great job making it work for this book. The characters in the bookends came alive for me every bit as much as the characters in the main story, and scenes that could have all too easily turned into just an info dump were entertaining and engaging.

I really enjoyed the setup here, where two people who were literally enemies to start off with, grow to admire and eventually love each other. Gaetan was the perfect noble hero, a fierce warrior but capable of mercy when appropriate. As a warrior in her own right, Ghislaine was no shrinking violet, but was clever and skilled. As for secondary characters, I loved the brotherhood and the occasional teasing between the knights while Alary made the perfect villain, sadistic and a little crazy and therefore a little unpredictable.

I admit I had a little trouble keeping all the knights straight, especially at first (there were nine knights in Gaetan's group, plus the priest) but that's probably more on me than the author as I'm horrible with names. I thought she actually did a pretty good job of giving each of her characters traits to help distinguish them. Certainly by the time I got to the end of the book, Aramis de Russe in particular had a place in my heart.

My one caveat for the story is that for a warrior woman, well trained in the warfare of her people, and who, from all accounts, is used to running things and getting her way, Ghislaine seemed at times oddly tentative and timid. Then in other situations she would react more like I expected, getting angry, fighting back and/or doing what she had to in order to achieve her goals. I guess I haven't quite been able to decide if that makes her character complex and human or just inconsistent, lol.

Great characters evoking lots of emotion (there were some gut-twisting, heart-wrenching moments along with some nice laughs) plus plenty of action and a couple of plot twists all added up to a highly enjoyable, engaging read for me. The hard part is deciding whether I should continue reading the de Wolfe books or try another line (I'm looking at you, de Russe!). 5 stars

The writing is impeccable. It is obvious that the author has a deep understanding of not only her characters but the Norman history woven throughout England.

It was a great adventure. With this said, this book has not aged well. There are certain aspects, especially the way Gaetan treats women, that made it quite difficult at times for me to keep reading. I assume this author remained true to the times in the way she describes "sex slaves" and how women were depicted as basically second-class citizens. Though I don't need to read a book to tell me this. History itself is full of real proof as to how difficult and unfair life has been for women in every age, so it is no surprise. What was surprising was the way in which the author wrote the reactions and interactions between the main characters. As I said, I understand how women were treated, but as an author, I would have thought that one has a choice as to where you want a character to go since this isn't a non fiction book, so you decide. So why did Ghislaine at times act like an idiot??

-Chasing after a man like a lost puppy.

-Conveniently 'fogetting' that the man has physically assaulted you, humiliated you by commenting on your clothes and your appearance to others because it doesn't fit into his idea of what a woman should look and dress like, and so others must know too I guess?

-Acting like a desperate child seeking approval at all costs, sacrificing her own safety and dignity.

I understand the reader needed to know just how deep the sense of not belonging went for her. But I just didn't appreciate reading about a woman who all throughout the book is described as a "woman warrior", though, dignified, brave, independent, just to have her reduced to a simpleton every time Gaetan deemed it necessary to through a little bit of attention her way. That bothered me quite a lot. She started the book strong, and so I thought she would have ended it strong as well...

However, if you are not interested in the (non-existent) romance aspect of it, this book is a deep dive into early Norman life once they came to conquer England.

When you read a new author you are never quite sure what to expect. You look at the reviews and make as good of an assessment as you can to decide. I had looked at several of her books at different times and thought they looked interesting and added them to my TBR pile, but this one stood out to me. So like any good reader, I took a leap of faith and set course with a new-to-me author. All I have to say is WOW. I could not put this book down. Yes, it is a romance, but that is definitely not the main theme or focus of this book. Her characters were rich with depth, and I felt completely drawn into the story. I love that we got introduced to some of the lesser well-known tribes that were in and around Mercia during the time of the Duke of Normandy conquering England. We also see, that madmen existed throughout time. I won't give away spoilers, but Alary, OH MY GOODNESS! The description of what de Wolfe's men saw outside of Alary's fortress was horrific. Of course you have clues to what he was suspected to be like throughout the book, but seeing it and having it all confirmed of how evil he was, YIKES!

This was definitely more of a book about the man, and the romance was one aspect of that story. It was believable as well, because it wasn't one of love at first sight (those actually drive me nuts most of the time). Gaeten and Ghislaine's love story is definitely one that builds over time. From enemies to lovers, fighting to bring the same man down.

I will definitely be adding her to my list of authors that I have to read more of.

Warwolfe is the first book in the De Wolfe Pack Series. This book can be read as a standalone

Present Day, Battle, Sussex.

Abigail Devlin is in Sussex as part of her research for her Ph.D. Dissertation in Medieval History at the University of Birmingham. She’s been to the village of Battle several months ago, where she’s spent her time at the museum that holds the artifacts of the Battle of Hastings. She also made the acquaintance of one Mr. Peters Groby, who knows the history of England and the history of the Battle of Hastings.

Despite her visits, she’s made little progress as there’s little documentation on the subject she’s seeking. But then she strikes lucky when Peters agrees to take her to a friend of his named Queensborough Browne. Queensborough family had owned lands in the area of the High Middle Ages.
Queensborough’s family has artifacts pertaining to knights and soldiers who fought with the Duke of Normandy when they arrived in England.

When Abigail finally meets Queensborough, at first he’s reluctant to share stories of his family pedigree for fear that other historians would want to see the artifacts.

But after much convincing from Abigail and Peters, Queensborough relents and shows them a book called the *Book of Battle* which was finished in the year 1068 A.D., two years after the Battle of Hastings, by a monk named Jathan *de Guerre*.

The book has been in his family’s generation for years and describes the Battle of Hastings to the last detail.

Abigail is over the moon to see this manuscript. Queensborough then agrees to let her read the manuscript as long it doesn’t leave his house. And with that, he tells them the story of these unsung heroes...of course, over a cup of tea 🍵

1066 A.D., Pevensey, England

The knights call themselves *Anges de Guerre*—the Angels of War—there’s their leader, Gaetan de Wolfe, Kristoph de Lohr, Aramis de Russe, Lancelot de Reyne, Marc de Moray, Denis de Winter, Luc de Lara, Kye St. Hèver, Téo du Reims, and Bartholomew *Eni yn dda*, or of Wellesbourne.

The Duke of Normandy is planning to invade England with the help of Warwolfe and his men.

When the duke learns that Harold Godwinson, the King of the Anglo-Saxons is away to tend to an attempted invasion by the Norwegians, he plans to intercept Harold and his army.

After the battle, one of Gaeten’s men, Kristoph is taken hostage by King Harold’s brother-in-law, Alary of Mercia and his men. Alary is a brute and was exiled from the royal stronghold of Tamworth.

Ghislaine of Mercia, his sister loathes Alary and wants to help Ghaten de Wolfe rescue Kristoph. She will be guiding them through the strange lands on their journey to the north since she’s familiar with the terrain. They must intercept Alary and his men before he can reach Tenebris.

Their journey takes them through the English countryside as they embark on a dangerous mission to save their comrade.

And Ghislaine cannot deny her attraction to Gaetan and there’s a spark between them that won’t die.

If you love historical fiction, read this book.
