It’s not a renovation without a bit of complication—murder, to be exact.
Poppy Lewis wants nothing more than to spruce up the Victorian mansion bequeathed to her by her late uncle and finally have the bed-and-breakfast of her dreams. She’s worked for months to prepare for the renovation crew, but in Starry Cove, nothing ever goes according to plan.
A gruesome murder at the worksite throws a wrench into Poppy’s project, and when the local authorities clamp down on the renovation, she’s left to live in the middle of a construction zone. Worse, the deputy sheriff points the finger at her friend, and now Poppy must find the killer before everything goes bottom up.
On top of all that, the mysterious appearance of an eccentric elderly woman puts Poppy and her pals on edge. Throw in an unprecedented election and frustrating attempts to decipher clues in a ratty old notebook and it’s all a blueprint for disaster.
Can Poppy escape from this bed of nails? Find out in Book 2 of the Poppy Lewis Mystery series, Best Slayed Plans.
Delightful cozy with a great plot. Poppy’s Inn becomes a crime scene when one of the construction crew is murdered. Mayor Dewey, the town’s resident cat, actually runs for mayor! #Team Dewey. The author braids a tight tale until the killer reveal. What’s really interesting is who the killer isn’t! The ending is a nail-biter!
Book 2. Poppy has been restoration of her house that a man Claude Goodwin ( large grandson of a pirate named Atticus ( they called him Good Tooth Goodwin) that her uncle Arthur inherited to her and she barely knew him.( It was said in Book 1) Poppy was making it into a Bed and Breakfast inn when it was all finished. Angie her baker friend and Harper her friend that is a mail carrier were helping. There were all kinds of people like Blister ( Bill) ( Angie 2nd cousin) he was foreman, Quinten iand Edgor were carpenters, Dimitri, Masie it was the plumber ( also Edgor or ex wife) Cho and electrician and twins Dustin and Justin did the brunt work. After the crew left Poppy found Edgor dead in her house. They all had shady dealings and fought with Edgar he was hard to work for they said. Blister was a suspect and Angie Poppy and Harper believed he was innocent. Then a strange old lady Greta came to Poppy house and told her that there was a notebook that uncle Arthur wanted Great to have. There was a symbol that she showed them a group known as Good Hand. Poppy and her friends thought she was suspicious. Great told them that Arthur and her were working on a project and if they did not give her the notebook then someone was going to come after it. Also Deputy Dewey the cat with the help of Harper mascot for Starry Cove was running for mayor against the already mayor Jim. This was a funny book especially when the cat was running for mayor. No one really liked Mayor Jim. These are great series.
Readers were treated to a couple different mysteries in this book, the regular murder mystery and mysterious woman who showed up at Poppy's house claiming she knew her uncle. At least Poppy was keeping his journal under wraps and safe from anyone. If Greta's what she claims, I think Poppy realizes they'll have bunches of trouble on their hands since she told about some pretty incredible things. Pirates in Starry Cove that weren't just legends?
The showdown was exciting and while the side story perp got away, the killer was at least caught. What kinds of crazy secrets did Poppy's uncle's journal hold anyway? I've already grabbed the next book in KU to find out more!
This is the exciting sequel to book 1 where we are introduced to Poppy, her friends, and Mayer Dewey, the cat. This book has a murder, an election with a surprising ending, a old mystery from years ago, and ends with another mystery which will be dealt with in book #3. This book is humorous, as well as nicely paced so there is never a dull moment. Very good series and can't wait for book #3.
I loved the #2 in this series! Between the crew, the cat, and the rain it keeps your attention full time! Great writing and can't wait to start the next one!
The second book of the series is excellent! Another one that I didn't figure out until it was explained. We learned more about the region and the builder and original owner of the gorgeous house.
Love Mayor Dewey. I think he will be great. Well written book with a little tongue in cheek humor. Starry Cove sounds like a place I would like to visit.
