Fyre & Ashes #2

Under Fyre

Rate this book
He was my professor, my stalker...now he's my captor.

Charlotte
I shouldn't desire the man who stalked me, who captured me, who's now holding me against my will.
But I do.
Professor Fyre claims it's part of my healing, this lust. This fear. But I'm experiencing phobias I never had before. Feelings I've never had before.
I want to be normal again. I want to be whole. Gideon told me it's a process that takes time and pain to complete.
Now I'm all mixed up inside. I don't know up from down in the dark. I don't know right from wrong when I'm hurting. And I can't tell good from evil when love keeps getting in the way.
Submission is my only choice, but it feels so wrong to give up.
To surrender and succumb to his dark needs.
Gideon may be my captor, but in a way, he's still my teacher.
Because every day he holds me captive and forces me to do those dark things, I learn how strong I really am.

Where there’s smoke, there’s Fyre!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💋💋💋💋
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📙📕📗📘📔
World building: 🌎🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: 👨🏻👱🏻‍♀‍🧔🏻👩🏻👱🏼‍♂‍

The heroine: Charlotte Ash - she has severe PTSD after being held in a toy box for 7 days by a serial rapist and killer. She has been doing art therapy at a local college and is infatuated with her professor.

The Hero(es): Gideon Fyre - he is a psychopath and knows it but also considers himself a healer. He has advanced degrees in both psychology and art. He has been obsessed with Charlotte since first seeing her file.

The Story: In the last book, we saw Fyre’s obsession with Charlotte grow to the point where he can’t control himself anymore. He has done some crazy things including kidnapping. He also may be working with the FBI in some strange way, though that wasn’t fully explained in Playing With Fyre.

This book is every bit as taboo and steamy as the first one and Frye is quite the dark horse. He keeps referring to something that happened in the past which he calls “Red Friday”. The term gives me images of the GOT red wedding, which was pretty horrific.

Frye is hard to pin down, he is every bit an anti-hero in this one. At some points he is so bad that he seems irredeemable but at other times his motivations seem almost altruistic. So this is definitely a crazy love story, and I do mean crazy! It also has a heck of a Cliffhanger!

I voluntarily read & reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts & opinions are my own.

3.5 - 4 WOW stars!

This is book two in this series and picks up where book one left off with Fyre kidnapping Charlotte. This book focuses on their time together and I'm going to be honest here...I have no idea wtf I just read. This is dark, gritty, uncomfortable and seriously f*cked up but Fox made it work. She is a really talented writer.

This ends in a brutal cliffhanger and once again I'm left with more questions than answers. I don't really know what to rate this story because it's not something I would typically love but I was immersed in this world. I'm pretty sure my face while reading was a mixture of horror and intrigue.

I will be reading the last one because no way am I not finding out how this gets a HEA. We're getting a HEA right? RIGHT?!

Anyway, if you're a fan of dark (emphasis on dark) romance, I would recommend giving this a try for sure.

Note to readers: This is full of triggers. If you have any, you've been warned.

Under Fyre was an intense continuation of Charlotte's unbelievable nightmare and story. Fyre is merciless in his therapy with her but she finds out that he has ulterior motives for what he has done in the past.
Logan's story is addictive and grabbed me from the very beginning. But that ending has me wanting more!

The action ramps up and the danger rises for Charlotte Ash. Fyre has enemies and will use any means necessary to draw him in. We meet Arrow, Fyre’s faithful companion, who takes an immediate liking to Charlotte. We come to a point where all hell breaks loose and, well, I can’t say much more or I feel I will give too much away. I will tell you, the ending of this novella had me screaming, “No, no, no, no, no,” at my ereader. Logan Fox, what are you doing to me? I am so glad that I have the rest of the story, sitting here, waiting for me to take the next step. First, a breath of fresh air to brace myself for what is to come.

Under Fyre picked up right where Playing with Fyre ended, and Charlotte found herself in Gideon’s clutches.
He didn’t just kidnap her for the fun of it though….no,he has very good reasons,or so he says.
He’s determined to help her heal, but his methods are not for everyone.
He wants her to mentally go through some of the things her captor/torturer did to her by putting her in similar situations, but at the same time enforcing the knowledge she survived it.
It could work, and some of it does, but only Gideon is still dealing with his own trauma….
And what that is,slowly becomes clear throughout this part.
What that traumatic event has made him do these past years, may seem criminal.
But at the same time,i understand his reasoning.
And i think, once she thinks things through,Charlotte will too….if she ever gets the chance.
Because the past has found Gideon, and what happens leaves me with a cliffhanger from hell!!
The only cure seems to be Catching Fyre,so that’s where i’m going….

4 Twisted Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (review is for both books)

Playing with Fyre and Under Fyre was all types of crazy!
Warning ⚠️ Spoilers up head….

This story is Dark, Twisted, suspenseful, steamy and disturbing and I loved it All!

I haven’t read anything by Logan Fox so I was going into this blind. I have to say I was impressed with her writing…
Heads up: Quite a few Tiggers in both books.

Wow!! Professor Gideon Fyre takes stalking to a whole new level. He’s domineering and a bit psychotic, but hey who doesn’t like a man a little bit on the cra cra side…right?. Well maybe the accurate description of Professor Fyre would be Serial Killer, but again who’s taken notes…right? You’ll either love him or hate him…
me tho…. I LOVED him! He doesn’t sugar coat his craziness and his hot af! 🔥

Charlotte Ash on the other hand has me baffled… I’m still trying to figure her out. She suffers from the trauma of being kidnapped years ago and is trying her best to avoid every and anything that happened to her, but when Gideon kidnaps Charlotte and starts exposure therapy on her he shows Charlotte more of his crazy side and does some disturbing shit to her, so I’m a little confused if she likes him or fears him? I’m getting mixed feelings.. I’m thinking she’s going to be as crazy as he is by the end of the series…lol

Like in book one there is a scene where he breaks into her apartment and sexual assaults her to the point she pisses herself and then he eats her out, but then in the next chapter she acts as if this was normal... Yea, because most sane guys will eat you out after you pissed yourself…

These type of things happen throughout both books, so I’m still unsure whether she’s as fucked up as he is?

Another incident was where he restraints her (and not in a romantic way either) and she begs him not to (go through the back door) if you catch my drift, but doesn’t listen to anything she has to say and again she acts if this is normal behavior too…um okay..
but when she finds out how many people he’s killed…. Now this….freaks the fuck out of her…..

Say what? So him kidnapping you, stalking you, humiliating you, violating you, demeaning you…..doesn’t freak you out, but him killing people does….🤔 lol

Anyhow, this series definitely has me on my toes and is taking me on one hell of a crazy ride…..

Both books end with cliffhangers, so I will continue this review as soon as Book three Catching Fyre comes out.

I have a feeling book three is going to open up all types of Fuckery! I can’t Wait to Read it!

Oh BTW I just love Arrow! 🥰

I was intrigued and pulled into Gideon and Charlotte’s beginning when I read Playing with Fyre in the Stalkers anthology but this continuation? I seriously think Logan’s goal was to see how long he could make my heart pound, if it was his end goal then he succeeded with making mine pound for 85% thru this addition. Gideon, this guy…he’s part therapist, part recovering victim, part lover, and (I am almost certain) part certifiable insane. Logan dove head first with this expansion, giving lead as to why Gideon is like he is but makes him the more vulnerable one - which is a huge switch from my normal readings. His past breaks my heart but brings to light why (and how) he became the way he is. His therapy methods for Charlotte are unconventional to say the least, but there’s something more behind it. Charlotte isn’t as weak in this round, she has a resilience that is admirable and determination to make it thru any and everything that is thrown at her. These two together? It’s like fire and ice to a certain point, it’s like they’re trying to help each other even if only one is aware of their actions and when they come together it can go either way.

Y’all- this book is dark (not as dark as some I have read in the past) and has an arsenal of triggers (recalling of past assaults, dubious consent, and a touch of Stockholm syndrome) so if you are a sensitive reader - please tread carefully.

Logan kept me on the edge of my seat and white knuckling my kindle as I devoured his words, drawing me into this twisted plot so full of twists and turns that when I reached the jaw dropping cliffhanger I almost screamed. I wasn’t ready to see their story end so soon and I am trembling with the need to know how this story ends. I am beyond impressed with this author’s capability of writing with such a finesse that I didn’t even realize I had reached the end until I hit the last page, seriously this story consumed me, made the world around me vanish, and I can’t wait to see where he takes it.

If you've seen my review of part one of this trilogy, Playing with Fyre, which is a ninety-ish page prequel of sorts, you know I liked the ideas but felt they were not explored enough and that it was sped up to a point where it felt short-changed. I enjoyed the concepts and the writing enough to be curious about where things were going, so I continued on to this part, the second of three (and this part is almost twice as long as the first one).

Happily for me, part two takes the time to delve into its concepts in the way I wish part one had. It reads like a different book really, and though you have to accept some things about the characters and their feelings that aren't quite earned from the lack of development in book one to continue on, I didn't find that too much of a hardship because the goings-on in this one were so interesting and more evenly presented.

It has the dark elements I like, done in a little bit different way from the usual so that it strikes a slightly unique chord. Could a few things have used more development and detail? Yes. But I think it really improved on the too fast/underdeveloped part one while maintaining a still relatively fast-paced, engaging readability.

I like to read standalones (or at least long books), so I vote for reading this series in the box set like I am (I have an ARC from Booksprout, it is releasing 10/31/2023) because from a reader perspective there is really no reason for separating books that are short, especially less than 200 pages each like these ones. After reading part two, I can say if you like dark romance (check trigger warnings for this series if you are someone who needs to) this one is worth a try, you just might have to push past the short part one if you are troubled by the things I was with it, to get to this more evenly written part one. I'll be reading part three next, and am eager to see if my perseverance pays off.

The second instalment in the 'Fyre & Ashes' series is even darker and more twisted than the first. 'Under Fyre' might be hard to read at times for some people, as it is a hotbed of potential triggers, so tread carefully.

I didn't love this book quite as much as the first, as it's a little slower moving with less action and suspense until the end, focusing instead on delving deeper into Logan and Charlotte. However, I was still very much captivated by it - so much so that I read it in one sitting - so it still deserves 5 stars (or maybe a 4.75 to 'Playing with Fyre''s 5).

Although we discover more about Gideon's past, he still keeps the readers on their toes as he remains somewhat of a mystery. As his obsession with Charlotte further intensifies, he simultaneously becomes the dark, irredeemable, certifiably insane anti-hero, and the altruistic psychiatrist trying to help cure Charlotte after her past traumas. And Charlotte is indeed growing stronger and more resilient, so his unconventional methods do appear to be working.

We also find out more about Arrow, Gideon's dog we only read about but never meet in book 1, and what a dog she is! I am completely in love with her and what a surprise her chapter was! I won't say any more so as not to spoil it for other readers, but just wait, you'll understand.

And finally, holy cliffhanger! I cannot wait for the third instalment to be released. Give me more of Gideon, Charlotte and Arrow, and the answers I desperately need!

Wow, this part of Gideon and Charlotte's story goes down a pretty dark alley. Be warned this is not a tale for the feint hearted, there are triggers in many forms although fans of Dexter will probably find an empathy for Gideon. Be prepared for violence, abuse, dub consent and rape, either in the current period or flashbacks.
The book is well written with duel POVs from both Gideon and Charlotte, keeping the reader in a state of suspense throughout. The characters are interesting and complex and both are suffering from some form of trauma which is often reflected in extreme behaviour. I found myself both intrigued and horrified at times, what else would I expect from an author of Logan's caliber, I can't wait to read the next episode in this hair raising ride. A must for lovers of dark romance.

I received an advanced readers copy of this book and all comments and opinions are my own.

Gideon and Charlotte's intense story continues in this, the second book in the Fyre & ashes series.
I love the push and pull between these characters, Gideon is a Psychopath and a stalker but you cant help but like him, his POV chapters are real eye openers to his thoughts and feelings for Charlotte, in this book we discover more about his past which helps explain his character and his reasoning for wanting to save Charlotte.
Truths come to light and Gideon pushes Charlotte to breaking point, it is dark and very intense and i just love how the story is being unfolded....that cliff hanger has me right on the edge!

Also Is it possible to love a dog character more than a human character?.....because let me tell you i just love Arrow so much!! I really don't want to spoil anything for future readers...but this dog is my hero!!

I cannot wait to see where Logan takes the plot in the next book, i just know it is going to be very dark and disturbing....and i cant wait!!

I received an ARC from the author and this is my honest review!

This story keeps getting better… and keeps getting darker. This had me in the edge of my seat and then left me hanging. I’m not usually one for cliffhangers but Logan has drawn me in and I’m loving it. I can’t wait for the third book!!

We learn so much about Gideon Fyre in this book! He’s a man wrestling between two sides…. the healer and the psychopath. We learn about his past and how it has led him to help people with trauma. We also learn the plans he holds for Charlotte. Plans that he hopes will both heal her and help him in his own mission. His exposure therapy is intense and not for the lighthearted but is written so well you can’t put it down!!

Well it's getting dark down the rabbit hole now that we are reconnecting with Gideon and Charlotte after the events of book one. Gideon is obviously obsessed with Charlotte and seems to struggle with controlling his own urges. The story is so well written with suspense and a wide range of emotions. There is so much I want to know especially about Gideon's past! I would like to believe that despite how broken this couple is that they may find some kind of happiness with each other but that remains to be seen. After that ending I'm definitely anxious to see what is going to happen in book three!

Amazing, life is coming around full circle. I truly love how this series is turning out.. Learning about Fire and what makes him tick is very important to his relationship with Charolette. The more we get into his psyche the more everything really starts to fall into place. I must say I love how strong Charlotte is becoming. She learning to understand him as he keeps her on edge with the answers to her questions. I have to say it’s quite a sight to see how there relationship has transformed. Above all Arrow is truly the hero of this book, she is fiercely protective and so intuitive to Frye.

This is the second short story of Charlotte and Gideon. It picks up right where book one ends and it kept me glued to my seat. Gideon is trying to help Charlotte cope with her past in his own messed up ways and it seems to be helping, but Charlotte finds out more about him and is shocked. They end up in some trouble and that ending left me shocked!!! I don’t want to give a lot away because wow it definitely should be experienced by each reader. It does end in a cliffhanger but the next one isn’t too far away and I can’t wait to see what the author does next.

Maybe it's because I've been binge-watching The Mentalist.. but there are so many similarities between Fyre's and Patrick Jane's trauma 🤔 both had wives and daughters, who got killed by a guy called Red. And now they are hunting the guy.
Honestly, I feel like Fyre is just an unhinged version of Jane 🙈

Excellent series so far!

Since this is book two of the Fyre & Ashes series; be sure to read book one, Playing with Fyre before reading this book.

Gideon Fyre is sure he can heal Charlotte Ash of her PTSD, which she suffers from ever since the trauma she went through at the hands of Peter Monroe. But with the way Gideon is going about it, he may aggravate the situation. He has good intentions, but will his good intentions put Charlotte in even more danger? This is a great series so far and I am looking forward to reading book three to see what happens next.

This story is about Fyre and Charlotte. He’s a therapist and teaches a art therapy class. She’s. Student and he’s interested right way in her. It’s almost an obsession as he watches her. She’s survived a horrific violent crime and needs therapy to heal. But this storyline is absolutely going to pull you in and have you wondering if people are good or evil? It will keep you in the edge of your seats trying to figure what will happen next!

Wow! This Story Goes Down A Dark Tunnel. Gideon & Charlotte’s Story Is Twisted & Suspenseful. His Psychotic Behavior Is Obviously Concerning, But The Question Remains Whether Or Not The Couple Finds Some Sort Of Twisted Happiness Together That Helps To Heal Their Wounds.

Trigger warning for sensitive readers: this book contains violence and issues of non-consent.

This story is book one of the Fyre & Ashes series. Playing with Fyre first appeared in a slightly shorter version in the Stalkers Anthology. Under Fyre is the continuation of Gideon and Charlotte’s story and is book two of the series. It is followed by Catching Fyre, book three.

FROM PLAYING WITH FYRE, BOOK ONE:

Charlotte Ash is taking an art therapy class at her local community college. Like the other students in her class, she is there for a reason. The class is specifically designed for trauma victims. Her parents died a few years ago and she has no friends to lean on, so her counselor recommended the class to help her deal with what happened. She is trying to get by day to day, hoping the darkness will pass, but each day is a struggle. What happened to her ten months ago still plagues her, but the heavy meds do a little to numb the pain from her memories of Peter Monroe. Many days she wonders why she even holds on – so much was taken from her. Peter Monroe stole so much but paid so little for what he had done. Charlotte has little to look forward to, but she has had a crush on her professor all semester. He looks to be about ten years or so older than her, but she cannot help but dream about him.

Professor Gideon Fyre doesn’t look like the average college professor. His commanding presence inspires respect from faculty and students alike. He is on his way to a tenured position. With a degree in psychology as well as a degree in art, he has been teaching art therapy for three years, helping his students to heal through art. He had tried counseling patients, but that ended spectacularly with Red Friday. He left his life behind and began anew teaching. He needed the space. He knew he had become unhinged, and healing through art was a safe choice. He is also an outdoorsman. He loves his mountain cabin in Waspwood Forest, where he often goes deer hunting. His chocolate Lab, Arrow, keeps him company. But lately he has been too busy for that. Charlotte Ash is different than any other student before. Her darkness draws him, and she has become an obsession. He doesn’t care if he loses his career or even if he loses his entire life – he has to show Charlotte just how much she means to him.

FROM UNDER FYRE, BOOK TWO:

This story opens in Gideon’s home. Fyre has plans for Charlotte, but those plans will test her. He wants her healed and whole. This has been his obsession: healing. And she isn’t his first patient. He is determined not to lose Charlotte to suicide. Exposure therapy seems to be his preferred method for nursing his patients back to health. Gideon’s methods with Charlotte aren’t entirely orthodox, though. She tests his patience and self-control because her case is different. Charlotte is his new obsession, and his plans for her include forever with him. Her case presents a special challenge since she cannot recall most of what happened to her during her captivity. She may just hate him by the time she has been healed.

Since her abduction, Charlotte had been obsessed with fantasies and thoughts of release. Ironically, Professor Fyre had been the star of many of those fantasies. Now she is both terrified and perplexed when she finds herself Gideon’s captive. He says he wants to help her, but there is no doubt that he is a psychopath. As happy as she might be to know that Peter Monroe won’t hurt her again, Gideon is a monster. She knows she is his obsession. He had entered her home and violated her. Then kidnapped her. It is hard to reconcile that man with the magnetic and well-liked Professor Fyre. She hardly knows what to think, yet as she sees him in his home and with his dog Arrow, she comes to a tentative peace with the idea that he might really want to help her. When he finally begins to open up to her, she slowly begins to understand some of his madness.

Gideon’s plans end up with a snag, changing the course he had laid out for Charlotte’s therapy. He has another passion, one that has him spending lots of time online. The White Lily chat room is full of men like Peter Monroe and Red Hutchins, and gaining access to full membership would open a lot of doors for him. He has recently been chatting online with Bent92, and things may be moving quicker than he had anticipated. Gideon must move up Charlotte’s timeline accordingly. For that, they go to his mountain cabin in Waspwood Forest. His obsessive compulsive behavior often has him acting on impulse despite his carefully laid plans, and soon he discovers he is in trouble.

One issue merits mention. *Spoilers* Gideon’s timeline is a little confusing. He connects his investigations with his students, but as far as we know he has only been teaching for three years. Red Friday was five years ago, but we are not led to believe his teaching began in New York. We know that he has been investigating for at least four years since he first came across DaddyNosBest then, but there is no explanation that fills in the gaps. Additionally, Geraldine was not a student, and we don’t have context for when her case occurred. We also do not know if that led to an investigation nor how that resolved. It would be nice to be able to piece together a timeline and understand Gideon’s progression over the years.

Wow – this is not for the squeamish! This story goes down a very dark tunnel, yet everything is relative. The hero here is a psychopath, so that gives you an idea about the nature of the story. Professor Fyre has a dark side. He is a predator – but there are different kinds of predators. He had talked about being a danger to Charlotte – and some of that plays out here. He struggles with self-control. We don’t know how far he will go or how it all began for him and when. The story of Red Friday is told here, and we learn a little about his life in New York. It remains unclear if that triggered any part of his current behavior. Hopefully more of Gideon’s past will be explained in the next book. Gideon professes his love for Charlotte, and she eventually returns the sentiments. Yet as her confession is in Gideon’s POV, it is impossible to know whether this is meant to assuage him in the moment or if sincere, how she came to feel that way. Their story sucks you in. There is so much pain; both Gideon and Charlotte are broken beyond repair. They have both seen too much evil. Their story is a dark and wild ride. It ends here in a cliffhanger as the story takes yet another twist.

Gideon and Charlotte’s dark story is twisted and suspenseful. Gideon’s psychotic behavior is obviously concerning, but the question remains whether or not he and Charlotte find some sort of twisted happiness together. And if so, might their relationship help to heal their wounds? Their story is well-written. It is plot-driven. The characters are carefully crafted and complex. This story is written in first person. The POV alternates between Gideon and Charlotte, with one chapter in Arrow’s POV (this a very sweet touch). I rate this story 4.5 stars.

I can handle the dark and morally ambiguous but the ending takes it out of the Romance realm for me. I've edited my review because I've calmed down some from when I first read it. I love stalker romances so this was right up my alley. I did love the dark intensity of this story but please oh please write book 3 because that ending still haunts me.
