He created a pseudonym based on the names of his sister and his sister-in-law: Rajeshwari and Ananthakumar. Prior to writing full-time, Kumar spent five years teaching, with a degree in education from Ramakrishna Vidyalaya. When he grew bored with this, he worked as a sales representative for an industrial rubber goods company.
Kumar's first published story was in 1968 or 1969, in the college magazine of Government Arts College, Coimbatore, where he earned a degree in botany. He has attributed this to a prank by another student, who used Kumar's name when volunteering to submit a story for the magazine; when his professor refused to allow Kumar to back out. The next day he reluctantly submitted "Vaazhndhu Kaatuvom", a love story.
Later that year, he submitted the crime story "Unnai Vidamaatten" to a short story contest in Maalai Murasu; this was the first story for which he was paid. In 1977, his work began appearing in Kumudam, starting with the short story "Idhu Nyayama".
His first novel, "Vaadagaiku Oru Uyir", was published in 1980. He subsequently told of how the editor of Kumudam had seen a porter on a platform at Egmore Railway Station engrossed in one of Kumar's stories. The porter had also forgone customers just to finish the story. It was then that the editor decided to make Kumar write a novel. In 1986, his publisher asked him if he could produce a novel a month; as a result, he became a full-time writer.
As of 2019, Kumar has written over 1500 novels; [dubious – discuss] his son, for whom digitizing the novels into e-books is a full-time profession, has been able to locate around 1,000 of them. He has also written over 2000 short stories, and scripts for over 250 television series, as well as the 2015 film Sandamarutham. He received the Tamil Nadu State government's prestigious 'Kalaimamani' award in 2009.

கடற்கரை ஓரம் ஒதுக்குப் புறமாக இருக்கும் பங்களாவில் இருந்து புரொபசர் ஒருவர் தன்
பூட்டிய அறையினுள் ஏதோ காலடி சப்தம் வருவதாக போலீஸ் ஸ்டேஷனுக்கு கால் செய்கிறார்.
அடுத்த நாள் அந்த வீட்டில் புரொபசர் கழுத்து அறுக்கப்பட்டு இறந்து கிடக்கிறார். விவேக்கும், கோகுல்நாத்தும் விசாரணையில் இறங்குகிறார்கள், விசாரணையில் அந்த வீட்டு சொந்தக்காரர் தன்னைத் தானே கழுத்தை அறுத்து தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்டதால் பேயாக உலாவி அந்த வீட்டிற்கு வருபவர்களை கொலை செய்வதாக தெரியவருகிறது.
இதை நம்பாமல் ராணுவத்தில் இருந்து ஒய்வு பெற்ற அதிகாரி தன் குடும்பத்துடன் தங்குகிறார். அன்று இரவு அவருக்கும் அதே காலடி சப்தம், அவர் மகள் அதே முறையில் கொலை செய்யப்படுகிறாள்.
மீண்டும் விசாரணை முதலில் தற்கொலை செய்தவரிடம் இருந்து தொடங்குகிறது. கொலை செய்தது யார்? பேயா அல்லது வேறு யாரோ ஒருவரா? என்ன காரணம் என்பதை ராஜேஷ் குமார் தனது வழக்கமான பாணியில் திகிலுடன் விறுவிறுப்பாக கூறி இருப்பதே கதை.

முதல் பக்கத்தில் கதை பயங்கரமாக இருக்கும் என்று கதாசிரியர் சொன்னதாலே ஒரு விறுவிறுப்புடன் படிக்கத் தொடங்கினால்....
கடற்கரை ஒரம் ஒதுக்குபுறமாக இருக்கும் பங்களாவில் இருந்து போலீஸ் ஸ்டேஷனுக்குக் கால் வருகிறது பேசுபவர் தன்னை ஒரு புரொபசர் என்று சொல்லி தன் வீட்டில் வித்தியாசமான சப்தம் வருவதாகச் சொல்வதால் அந்த நடு இரவில் விவேக் & கோகுல் ஆஜராகுகின்றனர்.
அந்தச் சப்தத்திற்காகக் காத்து இருக்கும் போது எதுவும் வராமல் விவேக் கிளம்பும் போது ரத்தத்தில் கையின் அடையாளம் ஜீப் கண்ணாடியில் இருக்கிறது. மறு நாள் அந்தப் புரொபசரின் இறந்த உடல் தான் கிடைக்கிறது.
விசாரணையில் அந்த வீட்டில் சொந்தக்காரர் தன்னைத் தானே கழுத்தை அறுத்து தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்டதால் பேயாக உலாவி அந்த வீட்டிற்கு வருபவர்களைக் கொலை செய்வதாகச் சொல்லி விவேக்கை இந்த கேஸ் சுத்தவிடுகிறது.
திரும்பவும் ராணுவத்தில் இருந்தவர் ஒய்வு பெற்று தன் குடும்பத்துடன் அந்த வீட்டில் இருக்க அவரின் மகள் கழுத்து திருப்ப பட்டு இறந்து விடுகிறாள்.
கேஸில் முதலில் அந்த வீட்டில் தற்கொலை செய்தவரிடம் இருந்து தொடங்குகிறது. அவரிடம் இருந்தவளே சொத்துக்காகத் தன் மகனுடன் சேர்ந்து கழுத்தை அறுத்துவிட்டு தற்கொலை என்று நாடகமாடியது தெரியவருகிறது.
விவேக் தனியா ஓர் இரவு அந்த வீட்டில் இருந்து உண்மை கண்டுபிடிக்கிறார். இறந்ததாகச் சொல்லப்பட்ட புரொபசர் இறக்கவில்லை தன்னைப் போலவே இருந்த தம்பியை கொன்றுவிட்டுப் பக்கத்தில் இருக்கும் ராணுவ ரகசியங்களை அறிய வந்த சிங்களன் அவர்.அந்த வீடு கடற்கரை ஒரம் தனியாக இருப்பதால் அதைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து அனைத்துக் காரியங்களைச் செய்ததை ஒத்துக்கொள்கிறான்.

Kaattru Urangum Neram
, which roughly translates to
When The Wind Goes To Rest
revolves around the Panicker Bungalow located in Injambakkam and the stories of its previous owner, Panicker's ghost haunting it. Police Inspector Gopinath asks Crime Branch detective Vivek to accompany him in investigating the mysterious sounds emanating from the upper loft of Panicker's Bungalow. Initially discovering nothing suspicious enough to pay much attention to, they return, only to wake up to the news of the initial complainant, Professor Nath being murdered with his head separated from his neck, suspiciously, in the same way the original owner Panicker was found dead due to a seeming suicide.
As days progress, they seem to return back to square one when another murder in the same modus operandi seems to have been committed, only this time on the daughter of a retired Army personnel. Does Vivek get to lay his hands on the killer, and was it all the work of Panicker's ghost as suggested by the residents forms the crux of the story.
To be frank, when I realized that Rajesh Kumar was going to play his words out through the dangerous combination of haunting and crime, I knew I had to steady up and let my imagination run wild when it came to taking on the killer and not stick on to the "haunted house" theory (all thanks to his previous novels, Kaiyil oru Minnal and Sarpa Viyugam :D).
As much as I was able to crack the truth behind Panicker's passing and the whole theory (or rather, devices) that went behind the "haunted bungalow", the imprints did throw me off guard and had my imagination and presumptions running wild for something else. The twist nearing the end wasn't something I had anticipated and I really have to give it to Rajesh Kumar for presenting something that none of us saw coming. The motive seemed quite right as the pieces ended up falling in place, and needless to say, Vivek and Rupala seem to have grown into my favourite duo after Sujatha's Ganesh-Vasanth and Pattukottai Prabhakar's Bharath-Suseela.
