“A Shifter’s Trial” held so much promise but unfortunately, it also did the one thing I really dislike in a read. It has a heroine who has never met a male that she isn’t horny for! Really???? Yep, this isn’t even a multiple partner lifestyle choice. It is just pure unadulterated rutting.
First, let me clarify, Quinn hasn’t had sex with anyone yet but in this read she is continuously confronted with hormones for four men/beasts. That’s fine if that’s what I signed up for but in this case I didn’t. I guess the real problem for me is we only really know the true character of two of the four men. The other two have not had their characters fully developed. I guess I could praise the author for at least making the female in this drama the powerful one who “can” claim as many mates as she chooses as opposed to a man. However, I digress.
This read had so much to recommend it. The plot was compelling especially the trial and I loved the brownie and fae sidekicks like Bea, Grumble and Meri. Not a fan of the alien connection because it really wasn’t needed to enhance the overall storyline. As a matter of fact it weakened it because it felt cheesy. The way of life of the Hawthorne Cove pack is archaic and devoid of any power for women but I guess this is where Quinn comes in.
Honestly, I’m glad the next book doesn’t come out for a while because it gives me a chance to determine whether or not I am going to continue with this series. At this point I am thinking, no. But who knows how I will feel in a week.
A new and exciting element to Quinn is revealed in book 2. Which I LOVED! Also, enjoyed the trial which had a few unknown characters pop up I am very curious about and quite the ending. Really it was a shocker. This shocker brings with it a change of direction for Quinn's romantic possibilities leading this reader to feel meh. Sometimes you have favorites when reading and sometimes the author goes in another direction. Many will love this and a few like me will feel meh about it.
Storyline is exciting but for me the romantic aspect is taking a turn.
Im pretty sure Debbie is one of the only RH authors I routinely read anymore, and I love that you always know what you're going to get: good world building, a gutsy heroine with heart, and some decent chemistry between her and the guys.
I really enjoy the mythology I'd this book. I can't remember how to spell their names, but I love that Bruce and the others aren't just typical werewolves. It adds something fresh to the book. I also really liked the glimpses we get of Bryce, but I also love that these are beast, not men, and Debbie balances their primal instincts in a way that doesn't make my inner feminist want to punch things.
I also really liked Quinn' development. In the first book we heard a lot form her about how kick ass she was, but we didn't really see much of it. Here, however, she gets to put her money where her mouth is!
I definitely recommend this series to fans of RH Urban Fantasy.
I should have stopped with the first book. I gave the 2nd book in the series a chance, despite not liking the first. Without belaboring the point overmuch, I simply do not like the fmc. The fmc comes off as a petulant teenager stomping her way through explicitly adult scenarios without thinking at all. Given that I do not like YA books that feature teenage protagonists having sex with multiple partners, the mental and emotional immaturity of the fmc is beyond off-putting.
A Shifter's Trial is book 2 in the Wolves of Hawthorne Cove and man does it not let up!
Quinn has now been marked for the calling and there is no escape for her. She soon realizes that she is linked to (what we later learn is called) a guide who comes in the shape of her household brownie named Bea. As she is desperately trying to find out what the calling is (everyone either doesn't know or can't tell) she learns what her other self is as well and it starts to make sense of the mark. As the calling starts she learns that she will be hunted- by what no one knows- and it's down to her and Bea to get through. Will she make it, and what is going on with all the boys in this book!?
I can always guarantee that Debbie Cassidy's books will be incredible. The world-building really is incredible, you get sucked in from the very beginning and get lost in it. The descriptions really make you feel like you are part of the story and you stay immersed the whole time.
The characters in this book are fantastic! They are really well written and very believable. I absolutely love the dynamic between Quinn and Tate. I really hope big things for them and I will be rooting for them! Jax, Bryce, and Emmit are touched on more and you get a few more details inside their minds, though they still are quite tight-lipped. I absolutely love Bea, she is so loveable and adorable. I really do imagine her in a Dobby-like role and I am a sucker for that type of "sidekick".
This book is non-stop from the very beginning and you will not want to put it down. There are plenty of twists and turns and OMG moments in this book that you will be left needing book 3 ASAP! I love the way the story is going and I could not ask for more. The banter is classic Cassidy, the heat has started to raise- and book 3 promises more I feel.
I really do recommend this book as the author always delivers and never disappoints. Great book for PNR, RH fans of all things witchy, fae, and other supes!
This book was an epic follow up to ‘A Shifters Sin’. The character development within this book for Quinn was brilliant and we truly got to see how badass she is, there was some heat and relationships developing in a way that was enjoyable. This book is a solid 4.5 stars for me and I recommend reading it, there’s a Badass heroine with drool worthy males and enough action to keep you reading! This is a must read!
This is such a fantastic continuation of this incredible series! We carry on from where book one left us, where we got left with that stunning ending. In this we get some answers about the calling, get more background on Quinn our kick ass heroine and meet some new interesting characters. Once again it’s action packed and full of danger and even more twists and turns to keep you spinning and let’s not forget the chemistry and steam!!! I loved It and I cannot wait for the next book!
great book 2 in this series, i love debbie cassidy her stories always have these amazing story lines with such an incredible amount of detail to the world she has made, this one is no different, i still don’t love the main character i don’t hate her but i really don’t love her but i definitely want to know more about her and what will happen next she really gets us with the cliffhanger at the end of this !! looking forward to book 3!!
Wow! This book was just as captivating as the first one that I couldn’t put it down. I love watching everything unfold a little bit more and that cliffhanger! I can’t wait to see what book 3 has to bring us. Do
I'm super enjoying this series. Book 2 has heaps of action. Not getting too steamy yet but good tension, and I'm really liking the guys. We get to learn more about Quinn's magic and the Faoladh, but of course there are still lots of questions to be answered, and I'm excited for the next book. Definitely some unique world-building in this one.
Wow what a wild ride this book is. Soo much going on and Quin is caught in the middle of it all. Lots of laughter, tears and death in this book. Soo excited for the next book.
SYNOPSIS (of 5 book Series): This story is set in a world where supernaturals and humans coexist. The FC (Quinn) believes she is part human/part Lycan but is unable to shift. As a result she is treated as a bit of an outsider by her pack. She is fated mates with the Alpha’s younger son and her father is Beta. To earn a place for herself in the pack she has become a top enforcer. Quinn’s mother left when she was 3 and her father has always treated her badly and never supported her. Quinn is rejected by her mate and receives an inheritance of a house in Hawthorne Cove. Hawthorne Cove is a place where all supernaturals and humans can live under their own law, protected by an ancient artefact but it does not allow Lycans admittance. Initially Quinn goes to Hawthorne Cove with her best friend Theo to try and steal the artefact as she thinks this will allow her to return to her pack and have a place their which the Alpha has promised but only if she returns with the artefact. The story covers Quinn meeting her other mates, learning that she is not part human but part something else and learning that the artefact is needed to protect not just Hawthorne Cove but the world from an evil called the Taint which wants to destroy the world. There’s plenty of drama and heat with a final battle and HEA in Book 5.
If I could have given this series a 3.5 overall then I would. The writing and editing were good with not too many errors. On the whole this was a decent series but there were some real frustrations that materially detracted from my enjoyment of the story. The world building and back story were solid enough and provided in bits and pieces as the story progressed.
As mentioned by previous reviewers, the author does not so much build Quinn’s character so you can see she is strong and kick ass but just tells you she is both i.e. by telling you how she dresses - yes, leather and a long coat and plenty of weapons - but without any real description of situations where she has shown her strength. I don’t think I ever got a real description of the FC but just had to cobble one together. I prefer to see evidence of a character’s persona and not just be told. The FC irritated me through most of Book 1. She’s supposed to be strong yet she is willing to steal an ancient artefact and leave a town unprotected just so that she can get a position in a pack that have treated her like dirt and where there is no actual certainty she will get what she’s been promised. It took too long for the FC to come to her senses. It took me a while to get over this level of selfishness and weakness and to buy into the apparent selflessness and niceness of the FC which the author then tried to portray.
The story is not unique - FC finds she is more than human and is, in fact an incredibly powerful hybrid; FC is some incredibly kind, generous and selfless individual who is catnip for all her mates; FC is the only one who can save the world. Having said that it is still an enjoyable romp and the story keeps moving. Heat level is above average but not too OTT or plentiful that it overtakes the story.
Unfortunately, by the end of Book 5 I felt there were a number of frustrating holes and unfinished business. The relationship with Dillon was very underdeveloped and having made the whole “immortal” piece a big issue the author just waived it off at the end with a side reference to it being no problem to achieve. It was also hard to correlate the fact that he was a god with the fact that he seemed to be able to do very little to help the FC in any situation.
There were situations that were raised but not resolved - Henrik, for example. Why was this not revisited and why was he not punished or something done about him and what he was doing? With Willow, the climax of this story line was unsatisfying and you never find out what happened afterwards. The situation with the Mageri and their treatment of the Onyx mages was also unresolved. The carnival piece came a bit out of the blue and seemed more of a plot device than organic to the story - it was suddenly introduced as a big reveal and then over with. Finally, what happened to Quinn’s father? Did her mother and grandmother every regret their behaviour? Why was Ward allowed to get away with everything he did? Did Theo resolve his issues about being part of a harem?
I get the author was trying to portray Quinn as perfect and selfless but honestly, ensuring evil is destroyed is also important. It was beyond annoying to have all these evil, nasty individuals just be allowed to get away with what they had done and not be held to account. The climax itself was a “blink and you miss it” finale. After wading through 5 Books the author could not be bothered to provide a decent climax and ending. I mean, the FC is not even the last person you hear from in the book, it’s Nyx. One of my biggest pet peeves is an author who drags you through a long drawn out story and then tries to wrap everything up in a few pages. That’s what this author did and it is beyond annoying and insulting to me as a reader!
So, in summary, a decent enough series if you can overlook the holes and frustrating ending and don’t think too deeply about anything 😬
This was one of the most convoluted storylines I have ever read. I started the first book because I wanted to read a shifter book. Based on the description that is what I was going to get. Then the storyline just kept getting weirder and weirder. It’s as if the author decided to take 12 different books and throw them all into one series. Aliens? Sirens? Demons? Vampires? Sea gods? Beastly creatures? Faeries? And there are about just as many POV’s to boot. Not only that but there is no mention this was going to be a Reverse Harem book (which I would not have read. I simply thought there was going to be a love triangle. Then the heroine seems to be related to everyone powerful, and she ends up having more mates who are different species than makes sense. I honestly felt like I needed to keep taking notes because I had no idea what was going on, and it started to become hard to follow who and what each character was. I’ll give it to the author for being creative, but this series does not make any sense, and is just utter nonsense to be honest. I have to say that but it’s the truth. The heroine also has sex with so many people I don’t know how you can keep up. The world is ending? My life is over? Let’s throw in a random sex scene and add a new mate with mystical powers of their own. I read through to the end because it was in KU and I wanted to know how ridiculous the story would get by the end. In that sense, it did not disappoint. Plus I couldn’t get over the repetition of certain words. Unfortunately, this is an author I do not recommend nor will I ever read again.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Starts literally straight after Book 1 ends and is full of some wonderful moments and new characters including Bea the house Brownie now linked to Quinn until the end of the Trials. It is so hard to give a review with out giving too much away in this book but Quinn finds out what type of Fae she is and after realising she cant escape the trials she literally is fighting for her life every step of the way and will need al the help she can get to survive. Full of action, and the steam when you get it is so amazingly good but you will definitely be wanting so much more even though this is only book 2! Dillon - i definitely need to know more about him - poss. outside chance of being a love interest but i don’t know there is just something about him that intrigues - almost like he is something more Nix & Orina are there as best friends always should be trying to help and doing everything with in their power whist being banned from Hawthorn Cove. And the cat has almost an Alice in wonderland feel to him - again i am assuming he is something more that we will have a better understanding of later in the storey So much amazing action, brilliant twists that you definitely wont have seen coming and the relationship building and dynamics although complex work so brilliantly. Oh and make sure you have a box of tissues with you towards the end as you will need them!
1.5. Ok, you cannot have 2 very large world builders in 100 pages (all the rest are fillers and teenage drama) and expect me to actually like this.
Spoiler alert, people! I'm too mad to actually hide it, so either stop reading or deal with it.
Ok, so, we find out 2 huge things here: 1. aliens exist (like, what?! This is not SF, don't combine the two if you don't know what you're doing). Oh, and there's this really short mention of different species of aliens who are trying to take over Earth. 2. there's a whole curse on a bloodline
Like, you cannot have such topics in so few pages. There will definitely be no world-building, no development (of characters or plot), and definitely no way to make me, the reader, 'feel' the story and get into it. And it's really annoying because it could have been better, the idea behind it isn't too bad (although we don't know how the 'sacrifices' are chosen, why, or by who; you can't say Fate, a human concept, when talking about aliens, right?)
Oh, and the end is so abrupt, I skipped no more than half a page and we had the end: ().
Why not give it 1 star? Well, I did end up reading it, and because there were sooo many different things happening, I didn't skip too much.
I wouldn't recommend this series though, not even as a pizza book.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
The Wild Hunt meets primordial wolves. Wild rush and deadly bacholorettes trial. I wish I had the elocution to properly explain the thrill, angst, and suspense in this book. Quinn, now marked with the Calling symbol, Tate and her bffs try to get her out. However, Quinn realises there's are more involved, more lives to protect and something deeper, darker pushing her actions. Action packed, fast-paced, trauma-inducing and swooning read, filled with dark mysterious voice; broody, possessive alphahole, and a insane desperate alphahole, not to mention kickass bffs. Cute and resilient creatures take care of their charges. A Shifter's Trial has had me on a knifes edge from the beginning to the end. The shocking end has left me reeling.
Tropes: Wild hunt. Mating. Why choose. Shifters. Sirens. Fae creatures. Found family. Close proximity. Friends to lovers. Enemies to lovers. Mild spice. Slow burn.
Quotes:
“Aren’t you nervous?” Bea shrugged. “No point worrying about things that can’t be changed. Whatever happens we will counteract it together.”
“It won’t break us,” he said softly. “It’ll make us stronger. I know it.”
“Listen, Quinn. You fast and strong. You have power inside you. You do this. Cross stretch to us. Cross the silver veil and you be safe. We all be safe.”
Quinn has a new mark. On her palm. Just like the fae women in town who are here for the Calling. What fresh hell is this? And she has exactly 2 days to prepare for this unavoidable event that no one will explain anything about except one ominous phrase: you will be hunted.
Spoilers ahead. Before anything else this book deserves trigger warnings. As part of something else Quinn gets bitten as a claiming. He stops...after a bit. He DOES stop. But he did try to persuade her using her reactions (reactions aren't consent) against her mind and words. It does bear warning for sensitive readers. Because reading a woman saying no and the guy not immediately stopping...yeah. I did drop a star for the lack of warning. As for the rest of the book, Cassidy does their usual fabulous twists and turns. Reveals and vague clues. Tests, trials, bonds- made and broken, power and walking away from what they thought they wanted. There's always so much packed in their books.
Edit to change my original stars down to a 1 because after the 4th book in this series I'm done with authors with no respect for readers. Three books in a row of s*xual assault themes and a r*pe by her mate. And not a single warning anywhere.
A marked improvement on the first book. I'm genuinely impressed. This one kept me riveted the whole way through.
Cassidy's ability to merge disparate threads of the paranormal to create a unique world with mysterious and compelling characters is second to none. The only complaint I can give is that this was too short.
The FMC was much more likeable this time around. As before, smut takes a backseat to the overarching action/mystery style plot, though there were some noteworthy heated scenes. There were also some romantic elements between the FMC and her best friend, adding further angst and emotional turmoil to the fast-paced external plot.
The titular wolves of Hawthorn Cove remain mysterious and elusive, with some revelations given about their species' history and purpose, but still not very much about the men themselves (Emmit, in particular, is a complete unknown). I can only hope Cassidy is planning several more books in this world for us to truly get to understand the characters in more depth.
I am loving this series so far. This is book 2 and carries on from the little cliffhanger from book 1. Quinn has been marked for the Calling, but has no idea what is is. Tate tries to find answers in his books, but it's all too shrouded in mystery. Jax knows something, but can't tell her. All she can find out is that some come back, but most do not. I am loving the tension between Jax and Quinn, and it's even hotting up with Tate. The Hawthorne pack are still a huge unknown, one minute they seem to help and then the next they want nothing to do with Quinn. This book is full of action and mystery, Quinn finds out more about what she is. Her friends are desperately trying to help her escape the town wards, but something keeps pulling her back. She keeps getting snippets of information from a mysterious cat and I can't wait to find out more. Another cliffhanger, but I am really looking forward to book 3.
If Quinn thought the mission she was sent on by Ronuld was dangerous, she was gravely mistaken. Because the Calling might be much deadlier. And there is no escape once you have been marked. Discovering more about herself, Quin has to survive the deadly trial and keep the threats at bay, while still discovering the nature of her relationship with Tate.. and trying to understand the bonds to the pack. Especially to Jax, Emmit, and Bryce. This was an action packed, extra fast read, full of heart-stopping moments and scenes where I was holding my breath while reading them. There is so much going on, and still there are hints dropped here and there that link this series to other series, links that show we are in fact in the same fantasy world. Magic goes wild, emotions skyrocket, and now that the stakes are getting even higher, there is the promise of more to come. Exhilarating read.
In the second book in the Wolves of Hawthorne Cove series, we start to see an evolution of the fmc, Quinn. In the last book, Quinn's desire to be accepted by her pack (and her mate) caused her to overlook the ways they were manipulating her. In this book, Quinn starts believing more in herself, trusting in her real friends, and is finally able to stand up to her original pack.
There's also a lot that happens in this book. We find out what the calling is, Quinn is put through a harrowing trial, we meet more interesting side characters, Quinn's relationships with several others evolve, Quinn has a showdown with her original pack, and there are shocking revelations about both Tate and Quinn's mother.
There's a lot of mysteries left to unravel in Hawthorne Cove, and I can't wait to read the next installment in the series.
So seriously good! This book picks up where book 1 left off. Quinn is not marked and in the trials. She doesn’t fully understand what this means but oh boy it’s a wild ride watching if unfurl. We meet a new character Bea the house Brownie. She’s linked with Quinn through the entirety of the trials. I kinda loved her. I adore Quinn. Yes, she sometimes acts a bit like a petulant teen but honestly everyone these days does at some point. She is strong and I love the fierceness she puts into her friendships! It’s a quality I admire in her. The steamy bits were hot and I was 100% here for them! We finally learn what type of Fae Quinn is and I was super excited as I’ve had my suspicions since book one!
I seriously love this series so hard. I couldn’t put either book down once starting them and was sucked into the story needing to know what happened next. Can’t wait for book 3!
At first you think it will be just like every other werewolf book you have ever read. She is rejected by her mate. Boo Hoo (I may have cried). BUT it is sooooo much more than that! There is so much action, adventure and romance packed into this book that it's amazing. I wasn't able to predict how the story would go. More characters pop up and more love interest. It's just jam packed full.
While the MC is annoying with her no-sense of self-worth (ness) I still enjoyed the journey she went on and the whole idea behind it. A small pattern does start to develop as you read the other book in this series. She always rushes off to save the day and its always only her that can fix things either with fighting or mating someone.
Tate was a character I really liked in the beginning but as the story progresses, I like him less and less.
A Shifter’s Trial sucked me in from the first page and I was so absorbed in the story that I read the book in one day.
Quinn feels like she is just a pawn to the lycan pack and realizes she will never fit in there. In this book she has been marked and has to take part in the Calling, but everyone is tight lipped about what it really is. I was also excited because Quinn finally finds out she is part fae and what type of fae she is.
This story was so captivating and we finally find out a bit more about the Hawthorne pack and the importance of the Calling. If you love stories with shifters, Fae, demons, and steamy hot alphas you definitely need to check out this series because it is truly amazing!
Sometimes I think it’s so unfair how Debbie Cassidy’s books can just suck me right into the world she’s written. This book surprised me with how much I loved it. Quinn fights for her life and the lives of millions in a trial she didn’t even know she was to be a part of. Along the way she picks up a ragtag crew to help her along. Her place in the packs is questioned; and so BIG things happen that shook my world. If only we would all be lucky enough to have friends like Nyx and Oriana, and to have a Tate in out corner. Quinn’s dynamic with Bryce and his pack is slowly getting more steamy (you’re killing me with the slow burn) but it feels more realistic. All in all a great book that needs to be on everyone’s TBR list.
This book could be interesting, but I don’t really like how things are happening.
The set-up/plot is interesting, and I would be interested in finding out more about what Quinn is, how she’s going to live with the Faoladh, and what the Faoladh’s lives look like.
I don’t really like how things are happening. While I liked Tate, I don’t really like how the author chose just before the Calling for Quinn and Tate to admit their feelings for each other. The claiming was interesting, but the book ends before anything is really shown – how they’re going to deal with it.
Bea and the other lesser fae were interesting, but they weren’t shown much.
While there are a lot of things that can be interesting, I just don’t care to continue the series because of how things are happening.
We continue to get to know Quinn and her many faces, unknown even to herself, and the trials that fate has placed in her path which she faced with all the courage and strength she is capable of.
She has proven her worth, her strength, her heart and above all that she is made for this new world that has accepted her for who she is. Gone is the past that continues to hurt her, and although she has achieved the recognition and power she has always longed for, she now means nothing without her partner in her life.
Quinn always faced so much with only Tate's support. Now she has Bryce, the other Faoladh, the brownies, her friends, but I don't know if it will be enough to face the danger that stalks her as we wait for Tate to return.
