Recently, I’ve had access to a personal library significantly larger than my own humble —yet growing — collection at home. Some of the books I’ve been able to enjoy are Taschen publications featuring incredible artwork from around the world. Having previously lived seven years in Japan, I couldn’t help but gravitate toward Hokusai’s exceptional woodblock prints of Mount Fuji. The work is exceptional.

Of course, there are the common favourites, “The Great Wave,” “Red Fuji,” and Rainstorm,” all of which are utterly resplendent. Some lesser-known prints that stand out include “Inume Pass” and “Groups of Mountain Climbers.” Additionally, Marks’ erudite description of the artwork and the history surrounding each piece remains an important highlight of the overall text.

5 stars. I’m glad this work came across my path. Essential reading for those interested in delving deeper into 19th Century Japanese art. A worthy area of examination, if you ask me.
