I don't think this one was nearly as well executed as The Story of Puss in Boots and Other Tales, although Tony Wolf is still on point with his illustrations. This one is totally animal-based stories, mostly taken from Aesop's fables but without the fable set apart at the end. Unfortunately, these are also lacking Aesop's flair. Each story, already pretty short, got squished so that they only cover one to one-and-a-half pages. They just felt flat and matter-of-fact, for all that they each started with "once upon a time."
I was also uncertain of Wolf's design choice to put borders on EVERY PAGE; for some that worked because it set apart the story, but for many it created these weird false barriers where you thought the story was over but it wasn't. And the barrier designs were different for every story with some of them being super visually distracting because they were just design for the sake of design rather than fitting with the rest of the page.
Not as strong a collection as some of the others in this series. I'll stick with a good compendium of Aesop and admire Wolf's artistry in the other works.
This is a collection of 23 Folklore in 54 pages intended for young readers ages three and older. The lore in this collection includes The Hare And The Tortoise, The Mouse And The Lion, The Vain Crow, and The Conceited Stag. These are extremely short stories that all have moral lessons. Each page is surrounded by a beautifully artistic border rendering some aspect of the story but each story is either one to one and a half pages long making the telling of the stories a bit confusing because a border could indicate an ending of a story that isn't quite finished yet. The illustrations are colorful and detailed and lend more life to the story than the words itself. Each story begins with the classic words " Once upon a time..." and the author waists no time getting to the point of the story with overly simplified language. The author also doesn't spend any time on setting or plot and instead chooses to describe the personality traits of the anthropomorphized characters. I gave this a two-star rating because I was not very impressed with how the stories where presented, how it seemed that the author was trying to cram too much into the pages. As I said before, the illustrations were beautiful but they both hindered and help the story. For example, on each page between the words and pictures, there was not a single free space, it is chaotic. I believe the stories are all classics and therefore would be appealing to the young readers in and of themselves but the way it was presented in this book is not very appealing and I would not recommend this book for any classroom activity or discussion.
