Things to Think about Adding

This author has put together several very short checklist books to help self-published authors organize publishing tasks. This book focuses on what precisely front and back matter is, the importance of it, and how to lay it out for both ebooks and printed books. The author lists a fair amount of possibilities for both sections, which I think is a good thing, and she does a good job explaining the purposes of each. In general, she appears to focus on fiction, with a separate subtitled section just on, say, nonfiction back matter. I actually think she should have clear, distinct sections about fiction and nonfiction front and back matter on a larger scale so a fiction author could go straight to a section to find everything she or he needs while a non-fiction author could go to another complete action just for her or him. I also thought that the suggested orders in the back for ebooks and printed books were off somewhat. I review over a thousand books a year in both fiction and nonfiction categories, and her ordering seems a little arbitrary and quite different from what I typically see. However, this book is a great, if brief, education on what you should think about to include in both front and back matter… the very important writing that isn’t the book itself. If you are planning to publish a book or hope to one day, this checklist could get you thinking about what you need to do for your front and back matter.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Comprehensive checklist of the most commonly used elements. Explains what they are and why they're important. Author suggests questions to deeper think about your goals for front and back matters. I found this very useful.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is a great book for anyone in any stage of the writing process. The front and back matter and it’s importance is clearly presented with the explanation of why and how. It also is a reminder to keep your backlist available and updated for purchase after this book is launched. I found it great learning material.
