Breaking down in a nowhere town called Providence wasn’t part of the plan.
The only break single mother, Amy Lawson, catches after losing her job and finding her boyfriend with another woman, is a broken-down car. Stranded and desperate, she finds herself at the mercy of a handsome, brooding mechanic. When he offers her help, she accepts, knowing too well the pain that comes from trusting others.
Widower and grieving father, Ben Young, fixes cars and avoids people. He can’t stand to see the pity in their eyes. There’s something different in Amy’s eyes, though, and he’s driven to help her—for her little girl’s sake. But helping means caring, and that’s not something he’s capable of. Not anymore.
Just when it looks like a relationship might be possible between Ben and Amy, she realizes her breaking down in this small town wasn’t an accident. She holds the key to what happened to Ben’s family. But will her quest for answers cost her everything?
Jill Burrell is an author of sweet, small-town romances full of faith, hope, and family.
She has always been an avid reader, and romance has always been her favorite genre. If she’s not writing or folding laundry her head is usually in a book.
When her father told her, “I’ve got a story I want you to write,” she didn’t think she’d ever actually do it. But after twenty years of being a stay-at-home mom with seven children, the idea of writing and publishing a book sounded less terrifying than entering the workforce again. Boy, was she wrong!
Some people will like this book, but it's not for me. I was lead to believe it would be a romance between Amy and Ben. It is, but it's also a romance between Amy and Ben's 2 cousins, Jake and Robert. She dates all 3 men. She is equally attracted to all 3. Worst of all the author paints Amy as a stuttering mess whenever she is near any of them because they're just SO good looking. Amy is pathetic around them and it's a huge turn-off for me. This is a very clean romance, but it's very obvious that any of the 3 men could have had Amy at any time. There is nothing that sets her attraction to Ben apart from 5he others. She would have been happy ending up with any of them. I just don't understand the author's decision to have her constantly drooling over every available man in this book if I'm supposed to care about her ending up with Ben. Aside from that major grievance, the book is also incredibly unrealistic. Everyone in this small town is basically a Care Bear. The ending is just insulting. Everything is wrapped up in a tidy little bow. I won't be continuing the series.
The writing style did not work for me. I feel as if I am missing something here. A lot of 4-5 stars, but the writing was a bit cold. No feeling. Felt forced. It was hard to connect. There are a lot of ARC reviews… DNF.
I really enjoyed most of this story. It got a little repetitive and slow in the middle and there really wasn't much about faith or God in it. I didn't find the "teasing" to be funny or appropriate (especially the scene with firearms), and I wanted her to get angry, but Amy is just so gosh-darn nice (too nice). The attention of all three brothers was weird, and I thought it was colossally stupid of her to go find the kidnapper on her own when hello, she works for the sheriff. These issues and the typos (even the baby's name appeared as Cassey and Cassie which is a simple find-and-replace) knocked this story down a bit from what it could have been.
“Wow! Merry Christmas!” Ben’s breath came in ragged puffs when he finally pulled away. “Please say we can have a short engagement.”
Rescued was a lot more than I expected. Usually, I'm ultra-careful about possible spoilers, but I have to give a bit of a spoiler to give you a clear picture of this book.
When I first picked up this book, I was expecting a small-town romance, in other words, a character-driven novel where the plot is secondary. But this is a plot-driven novel. And while it does give a nice sweet small-town romance, that wasn't the book's primary conflict. The main plot is a murder mystery and kidnapping of Ben's family, which isn't at all my kind of read. And I wasn't a fan of the process that led to the mystery's conclusion.
One of my main problems with this book was the characters' behaviors and the author's choice to add a new (in my opinion) unnecessary layer to Ben's character. I really wish I could explain how much I hated it, but every time I write out why it's pretty much all spoilers. Let's just say that I felt like it invalidated the character as he was initially presented. Similar to Ben, I started in favor of Amy and slowly became more frustrated with her choices throughout the book. It also didn't help that I'm not a fan of the third person P.O.V. the author employed.
This was not a page-turner for me. It would probably be a better read for someone who enjoys mysteries with just a touch of romance (literally a touch).
However, one good thing is that this book got me out of my reading slump.
After almost the worst day of her life it gets topped off by her car breaking down in the middle of the night in some random small town called Providence, things don't get too much better the next day when it seems like she is stuck in the twilight zone with how everyone looks at her wee girl Kallie. But as time goes on we see that the people of Providence are sweet and kind along with the heartbreaking reason everyone reacted the way they did, I loved getting to know the Winters family along with their extended family and those boys are an absolute hoot. We get to see raw emotion, heartbreak, new beginnings, acceptance, tough love as well as determination along with a mystery being solved while Ben and Amy fall for each other but not know what to do with their feelings due to what they have both been through.

Facing the fact that her long time boyfriend, Lance, and father of her toddler, Kallie, didn’t love her, was using her, abusing her and wasn’t even remotely faithful, sent her running. But it wasn’t only for her, Kallie deserved to be loved even if Amy didn’t believe that she, herself, wasn’t such a lovable person. Hadn’t her father’s rejection before she was born or her mother’s long string of lovers, with little care for Amy, through the years been enough to prove that to her? Four hours later broke, and with her car slowly dying on her she found the small town of Providence, a garage station where she could wait out the night to seek out help in the morning. It came in the form of a widower who worked and managed the garage. Rough, with a full scruffy beard and shaggy hair, Amy wasn’t sure asking him to check out her car was such a good idea. Ben Young had lost both his wife and young daughter in a car accident almost a year ago, still hadn’t come back from the dark grief that took over his life. His wife had died and their small babe had been stolen, never found. So, when the young woman, looking like she been wrung out tired, stepped out of the car, with a toddler that would be about the age of his daughter would be now, something touched him, making his heart to slowly start beating again. Here was someone who needed his help and maybe by helping them, like someone should have helped his wife, the child and Mom would be okay. His first step was to take them across the street to get something to eat. As they entered the cafe together everyone stopped to look up and stare. Ben Young with a young woman, bringing her to breakfast! Amy will find Providence was not only a friendly town but had a lot of good people willing to help her find a job, a place to live and care for her daughter. What she may not have realized was, how much it all linked back to the fact that Ben Young was finally coming back to life after his months of hiding away from friends and family a like. But would she find a permanent place to call home her and Kallie while her dark past trailed behind her? Would Ben ever be able to get past his grief and longing for his missing child? And where was she? Was she being cared for, loved? “Rescued” is about a hometown with good people, grief, loss, and love. A romance with a heartbreaking mystery, guys on the run from a wealthy persistent widow and a slow walk towards pulling life together out of the ashes of the past. There are the occasional, misguided characters who made me want to take a swat at them, a man hungry widow, and a louse of an ex among others. But there is enough room for the reader to imagine what they could do to settle with these people. The vindictive part of me would have like to see everyone get their just desserts. You may laugh with, cry for and want to spur the characters on at times, move them a little faster. But the story never seemed too long, it takes time to really learn to appreciate and respect people’s situations sometimes. There were three man guys that filled this good homespun tale and Jake’s will be in the next book. There was no cliff hanger, no rough language and a well spun out romance with respect for all.
I loved this book even though it sometimes drove me crazy. The story has so many parts and so many characters that it was sometimes difficult to keep everything straight. But there were always the two main characters, Amy and Ben.
There is a brief introduction of Amy in the life that she can no longer tolerate and her decision to leave it all behind. Then as she is driving away in the middle of the night her car breaks down and she barely makes it into a small town and fortuitously finds a car repair garage. And this begins the main part of the story. Enter Ben the proprietor and chief mechanic. He feels sorry for Amy and does more than fix her car. He takes her into his life, although very gradually.
Although it only covers a few weeks time, there are so many happenings in the story that it made my head spin. Amy has with her a daughter who is adorable, and Ben is reminded of the wife and daughter he lost about a year ago. His broken heart has not healed and he has kept totally to himself. Amy and Kallie bring him out of his shell. Amy's past haunts her, too, and she has very little self-confidence. This makes it difficult for Amy and Ben to have a solid relationship, but time has a way of overcoming both of their hesitation.
Amy has the quirky characteristic of almost always speaking before thinking, always exposing what she is really feeling, which sometimes exposes more than she wants to and sometimes is taken the wrong way by others, especially Ben. It is obvious that each of them has strong feelings of attraction for the other, and it takes the entire story to develop their relationship to the point where they are ready to admit it. Of course this leads to a happy ending, which I was so glad to see happen!
I have mixed feelings about this novel. It had the potential to be excellent, but I don’t feel it achieved that. A couple things in the story put the story off.
Ben’s wife died and baby was kidnapped. He meets Amy, who is a single mother with a little girl about the same age as the missing baby. In the end, Amy helps find the kidnapper, and they live happily ever after.
The problems are she is unable to control her lust for all great looking men. (Ben, Jake, Robert, and her ex). More, these men are close cousins, and do not seem to mind her dating them all. I was waiting to read it was a setup, with the cousins pushing her towards Ben, but that didn’t happen. That is just not reality. If the emotional connection is there, the other hot guys would not be a question. Her ex was abusive, causing her to run. When he pops up, she avoids him because he is attractive, not due to the abusive relationship. Not reality. Ben was so focused on Kallie in the beginning I was almost expecting something pedophilic to happen. I am glad it didn’t, but that level of focus seemed off. He was attracted to the baby, and the mom just happened to be Amy. He was not attracted to Amy, who just happened to have a daughter. This kept the romance from feeling real.

It was ok It was just underwhelming and read like a he said she said thing…
When Amy brakes down. she thinks that this is it, that this is rock bottom. She left her boyfriend took her daughter with her in the middle of the night… now she’s stuck. She managed to pull in to a mechanic place… and sleeps in her car till morning. Ben the grieving widower, sees something in Amy’s daughter and he takes pitty on them and ensures that they have a safe place to stay.
The whole town knows what happened to Ben, knows why everyone looks at her daughter the same way.. Amy feels unnerved by it all.
Still, she has nowhere to go. She finds out why everyone reacts the way that they do. And she determined to help Ben… after all he helped her when she needed it.
It was ok, not grate. But ok. It didn’t need her dating all three men.. there was no need for that at all. The story was there, but for some reason the author thought hey lets throw the other men at her see what she does.
Ben Young and Amy Lawson have gone through some tough times in their lives. Amy lost her job, then found her cheating, abusive ex-boyfriend with another woman. She jumps in her car and leaves, only to have the car break down in Providence. Now she’s hoping the brooding mechanic can help.
Ben, having lost his wife and child, tries to avoid people whenever he can. He fixes cars and that’s all the interaction he needs. But Amy seems different and, for her and her little girl, he wants to help. Little does he know that lives will begin to intersect and get tangled until Amy has some memory flashbacks and discovers something important… and dangerous. Will she lose her life over this? Or will she be rescued in time?
This is a wonderful book of learning to live again after great loss as well as learning to trust again after being broken. This is a new author to me but I will definitely read more of her writing. For the seriousness of subject matter this book also fun to read. Ben has lost his family. They have been gone for a year and he can’t seem to move forward with his life. After Amy’s married boss makes a pass at her while at work, she quits her job. When she gets home her mooching boyfriend is in her bed with another woman not to mention he has stolen money from her. She packs her bags, leaves town with her daughter and makes it as far as Providence before her car breaks down. Read how these two come together and begin to heal as they try to rescue each other.
I enjoyed this book very much. It was interesting to see the development of Amy's character as she went through life determined break the cycle she grew up in. In spite of her initial lack of self esteem she believed in love and made decisions based on that, however it was amazing to see her develop her instincts and sense of self and self preservation.
It was nice to see her work her way through her feelings now that she was in a better environment and see that although she had a rough start it didn't mean that it would always be that way. With a positive support system in place she came into her own while contributing and participating from a place of positivity, sensitivity and self worth!
I listened to the audio version of this book and I absolutely loved it. The narrator was fantastic! His smooth voice was so engaging. He had my full attention. Single mom Amy runs away from an abusive boyfriend to this beautiful small town where she meets Ben, a man full of so much loss and sorry. I loved Ben. You'll get to know Ben and his family and how Amy fit right in. I enjoyed the mystery that surrounded Ben's missing child and the car accident. I thought it was so good. I recommend this book and will search out the second book of this series. Thanks to StoryOrgin and Jill Burrell for sharing this wonderful book with me. This is my honest opinion and hope others will like this book as much as I did.
This is the first book in the Finding Providence Series, a Contemporary Romance. I loved it! Amy and Ben's story is beautifully written, emotional, captivating, and engaging. Amy is smart, strong, and determined. Ben is handsome, and protective. His past is heart-wrenching. They are perfect together. The storyline is filled with a little suspense, and twists and turns. The supporting characters are great and interesting. Danny Montooth did a good job bringing this story to life. Looking forward to more in the series! #StoryOrigin
Rescued: A Small Town Single Dad Romance was a decent clean romance with a little bit of suspense. Both Amy and Ben have had trouble pasts full of grief. Amy comes to town to escape her problems. The problem is that Amy and Ben can’t let go of their past emotional baggage. They end up being kind of whiny, and there really isn’t a good romance that grows between them. Amy is attracted to the men throughout the story. She decides to love Ben towards the end of the story. Both characters make several not so bright decisions. I listened to the audiobook, and I was fairly entertained.
This romance had an interesting plot. There were a few tense moments, as well as a couple passing references to religion. Those tense moments didn’t really add up to a solid suspense romance, but did make interesting additions to the story. I appreciated the way the author wrote of the struggles the MCs faced. I could easily see how they were working their way through them. I’d recommend this book to those who enjoy clean, contemporary romance with a few tense scenes.
Amy grew up with a mother who didn't care about her. She went from boyfriend to boyfriend so Amy left home at 17. She works as a manager as a bar/restaurant. When the bar sells and the new owner wants "benefits", she quits. She lives with Lance and has a 16 month old daughter. When she quits, she goes home to find Lance in bed with another woman. She goes to her friend's house who keeps Kallie, her daughter and leaves. She starts driving. Her car breaks down in Providence, WA. Ben is the mechanic who runs the shop. He lost his wife and daughter in a car accident a year ago. He helps Amy because he wishes someone would have helped his family. He finds her a place to stay and a job....until he can get her car fixed. Everyone keeps looking at Kallie funny and Amy is nervous. When she is told that Ben's daughter didn't die but was actually kidnapped, Amy is brokenhearted for him. But, Amy is determined to be a good mother and not like her mom. She isn't going to depend on a man to keep her happy. She's going to provide a good life for Kallie. As she becomes a part of the town, she knows this is where she wants to stay. Very good book.
Going in I didn’t realize it was written in third person all I seen was single mom and wanted to dive in. While I loved the small town feel, I loved Ben and his whole family. I don’t feel like the author did the heroine justice, making her seem interested in 3 men so close, two brothers and a cousin. I get Amy was confused and needed to love herself, but writing her that way made her seem shallow and needy.
This was a powerful story about a hero struggling with grief and a heroine struggling with rejection. I laughed out loud at parts and cried at other parts. This romantic suspense has Christian themes, but they're subtle.
The pacing was good until the ending which, though good, dragged a tiny bit. Readers who enjoy long epilogues might like the extra taste of happily-ever-after the last chapter gives.
This would've been a five-star book, but I subtracted a star due to numerous typographical errors.
There is a weird dynamic with the heroine being attracted to the hero's cousins, which I'll admit I didn't like, but overall, I highly recommend this novel.
After finishing Refuge, the second book in this series, I had to go back and read how this series started and get Ben & Amy’s story. It was even better than anticipated. I love romantic suspense novels and this was no exception. The last half of the story had me on the edge of my seat. I love everything about this series between the small town and the wonderful cast of characters. I can’t wait to finish the series with getting Robert’s happy ever after.
From covered to cover, rescued as a heartwarming and engrossing book. The story about how Amy an abuser with her daughter, and found Ben, a grieving and tender hearted man. The excitement of finding Ben’s daughter, a needle in a haystack, and then the blending of them as a family, and the warmth of Ben’s family accepting Amy into their family. I loved this book.
Small town romance, tension, intrigue, a bit of mystery and danger — Burrell’s debut novel has it all. This story kept me up past my bedtime as I turned page after page, wondering how happily-ever-after could possibly come to be. Burrell wonderfully wraps the whole story up in a romantic little bow and accents it with a happy sigh.
This was a truly good book. The heroine was stronger and better than she thought, the hero was intriguing, and the rest of the characters were thoughtful and nice. I would love to live in this town with these people. I think that everyone would just love this book and all the strong and loving characters in it.
I enjoyed the progression of the story, I never felt pieces were missing or left out. I didn't understand how all 3 men knew about each others dated Amy but never thought the situation weird. I am looking forward to the next story in the series. Roberts story most of all.
Amy and her daughter flee from her boyfriend after discovering his infidelity and becoming tired of the abuse. Her car takes her to the town of Providence, where it dies. The local town mechanic Ben rescues her and Kallie. She seeks information on the accident that kills Ben's wife and the disappearance of his daughter.
She ran from an abusive relationship, he’s the mechanic that helped her. But he’s more, a widower that lost his wife and kidnapped daughter. They help each other get over their pasts and in doing so build a new loving relationship. She discovers a lead to find his daughter.
Wonderful story. A young woman and her daughter, takes off after finding out her boyfriend has been unfaithful, and her boss a jerk.so no plans for her destination, but her misfortune of bad luck, per se, her car isn’t working right, so is forced to make a stop. Meeting people who take her and her child in, help her, and make her feel wanted. Beautiful story.❤️
This book was wholesome and sweet. I loved the story concept and really appreciated the details the author used. It was an enjoyable read.
However, I felt the story was disjointed and was missing depth. The characters seemed to jump quickly into new arenas without the proper lead up in interaction, thus the 3 ⭐
I really enjoyed this book. My heart broke for Ben, such a hard thing to go through. I was so glad that Amy realized she is lovable. I am glad they found their HEA together.
I only found 1 editing problem, there are about 3 times when Ben's daughters name is spelled Cassie, other times it is spelled Cassey. An editor should not have missed that.
