Breaking away from the shackles of family-run Bombay Oils Industries Ltd, Harsh Mariwala founded Marico in 1987. Today, the homegrown Marico is a leading international FMCG giant which recorded an annual turnover of over Rs 8000 crore last year. Their products, like Parachute, Nihar Naturals, Saffola, Set Wet, Livon and Mediker, are market leaders in their categories. This is the story of grit, gumption and growth, and of the core values of trust, transparency and innovation which have brought the company to its current stature. Co-authored by leading management thinker and guru Ram Charan, Harsh Realities is a much-awaited business book by an innovative and clear-headed leader who built a highly professional, competitive business from the ground up.
Harsh Realities by Harsh Mariwala and Ram Charan is business book based on the making of the world renowned company Marico. We all know the names Saffola and Parachute, but do we really know the company behind the scenes?
Starting from Oil to Saffola being their first product the book takes us into deeper understanding and unknown knowledge about Marico. Marico now holds brands like parachute, livon, set wet, etc. under the skincare and grooming section.
Starting from a small village in Kutch, Gujarat to bulding a consumer brand, we see Prof. Ram Charan reflects upon Harsh Mariwala's steps to building a company as well as gives us his business insights.
The book talks about ups and downs of Marico as well, which was good to read about. But at some points I did feel that the book does not hold that rawness to it's story. I would want to read more about Marico in future.
I happened to discover one of my favorite non-fiction books of all time.
“The key learning here is to base your career and business on your strengths. The chances of success are higher if one leverages one’s strength and not because one’s peers are pursuing an opportunity or opportunistic trends.” ~Harsh Mariwala
While exploring and making a mark in the family business might seem easy to all, ‘Harsh Realities: The Making of Marico’ shows us a different perspective and tells the readers how an entrepreneur can thrive in any circumstance.
This book is for: - Executives in the FMCG industry - Young professionals intending to join the FMCG industry - Leaders who are steering their organizations into new horizons - Young entrepreneurs
Harsh Realities is an exceptional read. It gives us a glimpse into the professional life of Harsh Mariwala and the inner intricacies of Marico Limited. As much as this story is about Harsh’s struggles through the toughest of situations and learning from them, Marico is as equal of a hero of this book. You see the birth of a young and beautiful dream and its growth into a mature Indian multinational company that it is now. So well-described is the making of this company, that I couldn’t help falling in love with Harsh’s third child (as Marico is aptly called).
Below are some of the highlights that stood out for me in this book: - Harsh Mariwala’s zeal to explore the traditional operations of the family business, test out his new ideas and the courage to implement them - Marico’s spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship and how they dealt with many adversities whether it was splitting of the family business or building consumer brands at a time when FMCG products were commoditized - The enigmatic product range expansion and adopting the blue ocean theory helped Marico to find their niche (hair care and healthy food categories) - Marico’s battle with HUL and the emerging problems that the management had to deal with - The intricacies that went into the various acquisitions and divestments made by Marico
This book made me reminisce my B-school days, it felt like a well-written case study with anecdotes and insights from Harsh Mariwala and Prof. Ram Charan. As you can see from my extremely tabbed book, there were numerous note-worthy lines and insights that I wanted to save so that I can go back to them any time I needed to. Harsh is an entrepreneur who didn’t shy away from facing the difficulties and worked extremely hard to make Marico what it is today, and this book is a beautiful glimpse into this journey and the best part is it makes the reader live through the same.
Hands down one of the most comprehensive and well-written business books I have read yet.
With its lucid language, Harsh Realities takes the reader through Harsh Mariwala's professional and personal journey - from his early days in learning the craft of his family business to carving out Marico from Bombay Oil and building it to the company we know today.
Some of the broad themes covered in the book are: - Mariwala's first tryst with Bombay Oil and his business learning journey - Circumstances and negotiations around the carving out of Marico from Bombay Oil - Creating the pillars of the newly made Marico - organisational culture, structure, talent and product portfolios. - Growth phase of Marico - dealing with new launches, failures, learnings, product management and building new supply chains. - The cutthroat encounter with Hindustan Lever (learnings from M&A management). - Creating new engines in times of stagnancy and international expansion stories. - First tryst with the capital markets and managing investor expectations. - Building effective corporate governance, the Board and effective succession planning. - Mariwala's life beyond Marico.
The book is structured in a way where every chapter is followed by observations/notes by Harsh Mariwala and Prof. Ram Charan on the theme at hand. There were also several parts in the book where I felt I was back in B-School deeply immersed in a case study!
An absolute must read with a plethora of insights for professionals involved in consumer business and entrepreneurs.
This is an awesome read. Despite his achievements, he is very humble. For me the two most interesting parts of the book were:
1 - His willingness to learn from others and reach out for professional help when needed 2 - Despite being a smaller company, the decision to compete against HUL in the Hair Oil Category
Harsh Mariwala is a true entrepreneur having created Marico from zero to one of the best professional company in India. The policies implemented by Harsh in Marico way back in 90s are the ones which corporate world is now thinking of. Harsh is well ahead of time and one of the best example he set was to step down from the MD/ CEO position and hand it over to a professional.
This is a superb book on the journey of Marico from nowhere to one of the best FMCG company in India.
My key learnings: You come into this life with nothing and leave with nothing. Learnings begin at birth and ends with death. I believe you steer your own course. Opportunity knocks on every door. In New York harsh marivala saw the convenience stores and shops displayed a huge array of options and brands as did the malls. The store and model layouts were extremely well organized. Product displays showcased merchandise attractively consumer brands ranging from breakfast foods snacks cookies cosmetics grooming and hygiene products to household goods and appliances offered innumerable choices. Harsh puzzles often extremely curious and inquiring bent of mind he would continually interact with the office staff in various departments questioning seeking information asking their advice accompanying the person responsible for liaison and sales he would engage with customers thereby gaining insight into quality pricing customer service delivery schedules and complaints. You obtain comprehensive information about competitor strengths and weaknesses. No teaching no books would have been an adequate substitute for the in-depth learning he had imbibed through observing trade the consumer the different practices and most importantly the ethos and cultural inclinations that prevailed in the country. Based on his interactions with various mentors distributors and customers he established a sales information system to tap into near opportunities and track sales and market shares. The key learning here is to base your carrier and business on your strengths. The chances of success are higher if 1 leverages once strengths and not because once peers are pursuing an opportunity or opportunistic trends. Dying quest to actively observe consumers and customers to be able to unravel emerging patterns up up end game consumer insights. Apart from learning stop bold through observation his lack of ego coupled with astuteness led him to seek out experts of one-on-one tutoring to address specific knowledge gaps in order to enable answers. Be a lifelong self learner. merely increased sales volumes are not enough. What gets measured gets done. Innovation is possible even in a commodity based product with low differentiation. Extreme patience. Necessity is the mother of invention. Recruit people better than yourself people who know more about key functions See what is missing and building narrative around it Defining the values was the first step communicating them was the second addressing the value gap was third behavioral training the 4th The mind is like a parachute it works only when open Marketing intuitions arose from a pain that Harsh saw at home Mentor professor ramcharan. War room for morale - parachute ki kasam- our room was created when dedicated telephone lines to get direct information from the field and respond to Hindustan levers moves in real time. A sales conference with one and all attired in army fatigues. As founders grow divide in the lens through which they look and the word and slowly the outlines of a vision evolve Scaling up requires a right organizational structure and right people in the right jobs Entrepreneur must sense the points of time where stagnation or complacency sets in. Confront these make changes reorganize and redesign Have in-depth knowledge of your branded coconut oil When the opportunity to acquire key brands that are central to company strategy presents itself one must go to great lengths and be aggressive. For a company to live thrive over long periods it should have a culture of continuously reinventing the portfolio in tune with the times. The success rate issue of consumer products companies on new launches was and remains about one in 10 and a gamble most times despite research and planning. Merico introduced 20% of profits as the fund to develop new growth engines each year. Taste comes first and consumers were unwilling to compromise taste for health. In depth individual interactions over traditional market research through group discussions or formatted questionnaires An FMCG company's most valuable asset is its brand Sometimes you win, but you never lose. you learn During acquisitions the target should have a clear strategic rationale and not because it is fashionable or there is cash to acquire or a limited objective to leverage distribution An entrepreneur to entrepreneur conversation is very different from an entrepreneur to professional conversation Make your passion your work you will enjoy your journey We learn from these leaders that it is possible to do both: building business institutions and being personally involved in building for society, beyond the self-interest of their business Be focused: Do a few things but do them well It is vital to understand that one's vision should not be set in stone but evolve constantly and be revisited every few years It is imperative to ask yourself what can I do differently? What can I now pursue? This could be a break away from your current line of work and an opportunity to reinvent yourself Harsh's purpose in life is to do more be more and make a difference Passion + perseverance + determination= Grit (an imperative mix in a recipe for success)
Judge the book by its cover! The title Harsh Realities is a curious interplay of words. The book epitomizes the openness and transparency at Marico, also reflected in the cover and even the bookmark! The whole concept of this book is so well presented, that it represents the brand Harsh and Marico in a unique way. This has been one of the thought provoking books that I have read recently. I have been fortunate to hear the story from the man himself! But the book covers the entire journey in a most candid manner with takes from Prof Ram Charan inserted at right places beautifully. Harsh beautifully narrates the genesis of the name Mariwala, to the Kachchi traders who traded pepper in those days. From thereon, the name got transformed into a brand! He goes on to recite the events leading to the business getting into Oils with the brand named as Parachute and Saffola. His penchant to know the market better and take these brands to consumers in small packs was the first seeds of the FMCG business in the company. Eventually, as the consumer goods business grew and separated from the Bombay Oils, Marico was born! The Marico story from there is eventful – from becoming financially separate entity, to the listing on stock exchange, the story of predator turned into prey and expansion of the portfolio. This was all done with the focus on the stakeholders of the business, the members (as employees are called in Marico), the shareholders, the associates, the vendors, the farmers and most important of all – the consumers. The unique aspect of Marico is its culture. It was built by being focused on values. In Harsh’s words – “Values lead to beliefs. Beliefs convert to behaviors – which, then, creates culture!” One important thing that separates Marico from all the promoter-driven companies has been the ease with which leadership was transitioned in Marico. Harsh – handed over the baton to Saugata with a clear understanding of each other’s roles and responsibilities. Harsh sums up his life attitude in the form of 8 maxims – Leveraging strength – a strength usually converts into passion, so you enjoy what you do. Being focused – focus leads to depth. And depth leads to excellence. Taking Risks – Sometimes you win. But you never lose. You always learn. Evolve your vision – your vision should not be cast in stone, but should continually evolve as per the environment and circumstances Aim for win-win negotiations – A win-win result, where both parties meet halfway without compromise makes for a sound way forward. Reinvent yourself – Reimagine yourself, explore new horizons, take up new challenges. Purpose – the journey of life is more fulfilling and rewarding when travelled with a purpose. Grit – Passion+ Perseverance + Determination = Grit which is an important mix in a recipe for success.
What resonates with me is the willingness to take risk. This is manifested in many facets of the organization, where the odds were stacked against Marico, but it turned the tables to prove everyone wrong! I quote below one of his favorite verses on risk To laugh is to risk appearing a fool. To weep is to risk appearing sentimental. To reach for another is to risk involvement. To expose your ideas, your dreams before a crowd, is to risk their loss. To love is to risk not being loved in return. To live is to risk dying. To believe is to risk despair. To try is to risk failure. But risks must be taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The people who risk nothing, Do nothing Have nothing Are noting.
This has been the mantra for Marico in the past 30 years, where it has punched above its weight, has transformed itself from a commodity company to FMCG company but retaining its unique culture.
I am proud of being a part of this wonderful organization!
We all know that Harish Mariwala took a traditional commodity business and turned it into one of the most successful businesses in India. Which could compete with the biggest international MNC’s and beat them. Which gives the best financial returns. Which has been as innovative as any startup and was doing this 30 years ago. Before there were any startups. Has built awesome brands which consumers love and an awesome culture which employees.
This book is the story of how Harish Mariwala did it.
This is an excellent book because it’s very honest. Harish shares everything. Including all the mis steps and the wrong moves.
It’s very comprehensive. Covers all the important milestones and inflection points. And all aspects of building a business. You can argue though that readers could benefit from more in-depth detail of the examples. But I think you can only do so much in one book which covers 40 plus years of business.
There is a lot to learn. It offers a great template to build a success long term business. To solve all kinds of problems. It might sound like hyperbole but for me this sits in the same class of business books like the books about Amazon, Netflix, Starbucks and Southwest Airlines.
Through this book, the author narrates quite honestly about the birth and growth of Marico. A lot of business, team and family-business management-related events and decision-making were discussed threadbare. Given that the book was co-written with Prof. (Dr.) Ram Charan, I felt that his presence and contribution to the company's growth may be a bit overstated. Overall, the book does have quite a lesson for incubating and scaling up a consumer business. Overall, a good read.
There is nothing inspiring in the book. You don't connect to Marico as a brand or even it's founder Harsh Mariwala. Apart from 2-3 chapters which are mildly interesting, there's nothing memorable in the book. The way chapters are structured is confusing and again there is no particular thrill while reading the book. You can skip through majority of the book. It seems that the author didn't want to reveal too many things about his thought process and it's company functioning. Very mediocre.
This is a mutual praising exercise camouflaged as a book wherein Harsh is an energetic young self made man(heir to a fortune) who battled all the way with the help of this guru, Ram Charan. Horrible. Horrible. Total waste of money An opportunity to genuinely write history of an Indian company is laid to rest.
- technology transfer from acquirees to fuel main india business - acquisitions attractive to grow top talent. The lure of foreign - patience - 2 years to resolve family discussions and hive off the consumer business - trust - when there was no communication, people had to rely on your word. Kerala suppliers trusted these guys, when it was easy for them to pull a fast one - investor relations - branding and communicating clearly, FICCI - criticism is name calling, directed at a perspn and leads to psychological hurt and damage, whereas critique is directed at observed behaviour with opportunities for improvement. - underinvestment in the factory - unclean floor, employees unhappy. - audit is important - tapping the key is important; but not followed in the gym Anytime Fitness. - academic guidance - didn’t go to top tier mba but enrolled best management guru in Ram Charan. Was constantly guided. Pushed to constantly innovate and avoid stagnation - revive - product innovation based on personal experience. With the right r&d guys u can get any solution made - innovation on packaging - plastic packaging of parachute. Interesting experiment with video of bottle left with rats to attack. and used that to convince others. - rituals - 2 pm and 3:15 pm tea as meetings with family and important discussions - golf as place to do business - unilever deal. Acquired another hair oil brand and consolidated position in the market - retirement from active duty - his hand almost forced by saugata. But he submits to it. Kids not keen to be part of the business. Prioritized the future of the business over his own enjoyment. That’s huge - focus on talent as the first thing to do - Leveraging strength – a strength usually converts into passion, so you enjoy what you do. HIs strength was consumer understanding? Stayed away from B2B because thought himself too shy to make small talk and do institutional sales - U dont need formal MBA to learn. u can be curious and learn everywhere. - laugh is to risk appearing a fool.

One of the lesser known stories in the world of CPG - Marico is truly a case study on several fronts - a family business transforming into a professionally managed organization, an Indian underdog successfully fighting off a multinational goliath, branding the unbranded (coconut oil), and many more.
The foresight and grit exhibited by Harsh Mariwala throughout the Marico journey come alive in various chapters of this book.
Definitely a recommended read if you are from / interested in the Indian CPG landscape.
Some notes from the book:
1. Marico implemented a lot of the new age cultural elements way back in the day. No approvals for leaves or expenses, no clocking of time etc. 2. One of the first companies to open up the Kerala market for setting up manufacturing facilities. First principles thinking to manage the labor unions. 3. The mind is like a parachute; it works only when open. 4. The 5E model for culture - Educate Engage Enable Evaluate and Evolve. 5. Two types of organizations - The King and his subjects, and one driven by a value system (Uday Kotak). 6. Parachute Uttam pack for WB, with green colors and local Bengali graphics. 7. The HUL - Marico war on coconut oil - Parachute vs Nihar, and the strategies used to fight off - packaging / high decibel advertising, deepening rural distribution 8. The strategic fund - 20% of profits earmarked for driving new growth engines 9. Saffola Zest (healthy snack) did not work out - error was prioritizing health over taste 10. Format innovation - converted Mediker shampoo to oil format (for managing lice in hair) 11. Incubation cell set up to foster innovation. - members freed up from other duties and reporting directly to CEO 12. Kaya Skin Clinic was one of the projects that came out of the incubation cell 13. Direct sourcing of copra oil through Marico collection centers, e-bidding 14. Marico Bangladesh is the biggest Indian FMCG co in Bangladesh 15. Innovative marketing campaign - getting all radio stations to simultaneously cast the same ad 16. Rivigo has transformed the lives of truck drivers, enabling them to work shorter routes to be able to get back home for dinner. This is one innovation that was fostered by the Marico Innovation Foundation. 17. The Marico story is a lesson in branding the unbranded (coconut oil). 18. Lead from your strengths - 75 percent focus on leveraging strengths and 25 percent focus on overcoming weaknesses
"At a personal level one should have a practice that works for oneself, not just because I am saying it, but there is a certain way of doing things, leading life, and I have a strong belief that if one does that, then the stresses on life dramatically reduce.”
Harsh Mariwala.
It's not often, basically never, that a nonfiction book graces my feed, but this calls for an exception. Harsh Realities is by far one of the nicest books I've picked up this year, and I'm thankful it came my way and that I took a chance on it. I don't know how many of you are familiar with the work of Mariwala or Marico, which deals with areas of health, beauty and wellness. Mariwala himself is a simple man, and his grounded philosophy comes through in his writing. He believes in discipline, and compartmentalization. None of these things come easy, but they are good things to strive towards.
This book is a unique take on how entrepreneurs make their own roads, regardless of the fame, fortune, or family background that they come from. This is key to a successful businessperson. You can't be complacent.
If you are someone who has the idea of a small business in the back of your mind, or if you are already running one, I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS HANDS DOWN. You will learn so much, and most of all, you will be inspired.
Harsh Realities will give you a glance into Mariwala's inner life and it's workings. You will learn about the struggles and the difficulties, and through it all, how his wit and stamina withstood the test of time. I think the way he shines through and just gives this image of a humble, grounded, and intensely successful human being is what inspired me the most. From the get go, there is an unique spirit of innovation in him, and I think this is one of the most important things you need if your business is to withstand the difficult years. And we all have them.
It's a 4.3/5 for me. As I mentioned, all my lovely bookstagrammers who are in the throes of their own business and making it take shape and form, this book is a revelation.
I get tempted when I read "Judge a book by its cover".
Harsh Realities by Marico founder Harsh Mariwala.
The cover of the book gives a glimpse of its content. As, it shows the transparency in everywhere.
A book for budding entrepreneurs and also for established company. This memoir has so much to offer through the learning and innovative measures taken by Harsh Mariwala.
Born in the family who run Bombay Oil Industries Pvt. Ltd. Harsh has curious mind to explore and expand his own business in his own way. In 1971 Harsh joins Bombay Oil Industries.
In 1974, he envisaged a branded FMCG market for coconut and refined edible oils. The famous Parachute coconut oil.
Marico is founded in 2nd April 1990 that led to the transformation of traditional tin packaging to blue plastic bottle package.
Success key of Marico by Harsh. The 3Ps of Marico—
People Profit Product
I got to know how Saffola refined come to in existence. Saffola derives from safflower. Harsh grade up to extend his company in oil industry. After a great survey he found that heart disease can be reduced by bringing in the daily use of Suffola oil. He worked on it and launched in the market.
His innovative approach shows us how determined he was towards sustainability and social welfare. I get a good glimpse where he directly intereacted with coconut farmers for copra to produce more coconut oil without any adulteration. This shows company and farmers interaction for best production.
Their products like Parachute, Saffola, Revive, Setwet and Livon among others, are market leaders in their categories.
This is the story of grit, gumption, growth and the core values of trust, transparency and innovation which have brought the company to its current stature.
Co- authored by leading management thinker and guru Ram Charan, Harsh Realities is a much awaited business book by an innovative and clear-headed leader who built a highly professional, competitive business from the ground up.
The coconut oil market.. to improve the structure, the supply chain team cane up with innovative called 'gate buying'.
Harsh Realities sums up the journey of Harsh Mariwala in building 'Marico', Prof. Ram Charan's insights about how Harsh copes up with everything, and much more. The book, as seen from the cover, is uniquely crafted. It has the creation and evolution of Marico in the infographic, attached at the back. The concept of this book is keenly thought out, and I liked this a lot! ⠀ Thank you @hcmariwala @penguinindia and @reader_viddh for gifting me this book! ⠀ Harsh Mariwala launched Marico in 1987 to break free from the constraints of a family-owned and managed commodity manufacturing business. His journey was distinct and remarkable because of the challenges and tribulations he faced while making path-breaking decisions with a determined goal. All the hard work, patience, and determination paid off as Marico is now a publicly listed and professionally managed FMCG company. ⠀ Mariwala's innovative and entrepreneurial spirit and how they dealt with many adversities, whether it was dividing a family business or building consumer brands when FMCG products were commoditized, is inspiring. ⠀ I was able to understand the evolution of various Marico's products such as Parachute Oil and how branding and marketing strategies of Saffola and other products have taken shape and changed forms over time, as we have been using these products in our house for years now. As I am writing this, I have Parachute Oil on my desk :D ⠀ One more thing that I liked about the book is the way it was written. Harsh has kept the book focused on lessons from the struggles rather than just keeping it on challenges. ⠀ IN A NUTSHELL: The Making of Marico is one inspiring and determined account of struggles, failing, standing up again, succeeding, and building something incredible. ⠀ Recommend? YES. The way the book has been crafted makes it worth it for all of us to pick it up and have a look. However, this book is a good guide for entrepreneurs, business owners, and anyone who wants to make it big in the business world. So if you like business books, you can pick this one.
•Sometimes you win. But you never lose. You always learn.•
Talking about this book, I got an opportunity to interact with Mr Harsh Mariwala and interview him. And as I read this book I still remember the interaction I had with him. It's a memory that I am going to treasure forever. There's so much to learn from him.

There are so many things that I learned from the book. One of them is to Innovate. Experiment and grow.
Love reading business books? Do not skip this book.
Just last year I was sitting in Marico’s office totally unaware as to how humongous this company will turn out to be. I and Mumbai Bookstagramer’s personally met Harsh Mariwala and had the pleasure of being in presence of him during a meeting for the book that was launched by the company last year.
While reading Harsh Realities: The making of Marico by Harsh Mariwala and Ram charan it brought me into a lime light that I had visited one of the biggest FMCG company of India and after reading through it’s perils and successes it became much clearer to me that Harsh Mariwala the person who I met last year was a man of honour. I was keen to keep on reading this book and as I turned it’s pages I not only saw how Marico was converted from a small family business to a big multinational company but I even learned a lot of lessons that will stay with me for a lifetime. Even after visiting it’s plush office, the real Marico came into view through this book and the personalities behind it who turned around this company completely into a consumer oriented one.
Also I am in awe with the quality of the book and the transparency of the outer cover as well as of the bookmark that was inherited in the book. Marico always inherits quality over quantity and that was something this book also reflected. I am inspired through Harsh Mariwala’s journey and his saint like personality.
In essence, it is basically a memoir by Mr.Harsh Mariwala( The book is called HARSH Realities not trying to depict his name). Well if we start with what is good about the book then it's definitely Mr.Harsh himself, his story is presented in a very realistic sense without any exaggerated claims which gives the book authenticity. The narration is engaging enough and quite easy to follow so kudos for that.
Now what I didn't like about the book, as with most of the memoirs, I did not get the real picture of Mr.Harsh, yes the book talked about his success and the way he achieved it, and the struggles that he had to go through while establishing his business but the book does not give any personal account or details while he was facing these adversities except for when he was in a tussle with his family over the ownership of the business, So at the end, it depicts Mr.harsh as a very successful and determined person who achieved everything he strived for which sounds a tad bit unrealistic. Probably the book just wanted to deal more with the establishment of MARICO which was not what I was looking for.
Anyway, I would recommend this book to anyone interested to learn from Mr.harsh career, there are definitely some things you can pick up from the book which could help someone in their entrepreneurship career.
"My quest to 'do more, BE more and make a difference' continues..."
Harsh Realities by the Indian entrepreneur, Harsh Mariwala and business books bestseller author, Ram Charan, is the story of Harsh Mariwala who started his very own consumer company, Marico. He started from ground zero and ended up being the founded of today's world class company which is nothing less than inspiring!
This book is not your regular success story but a book that gives you a peek into a mindset that is made to lead! To come across innovations and Growth in a way that seems impossible to a normal mind initially is the best thing about this book! You come across the different approaches that you would never have thought of to accomplish a task and you see both the agony and ecstasy that goes behind the scenes of creating a success story!
From learning about calculated risk taking to getting up from failures and actually 'walking the talk', this book was a fascinating learning experience which left my mind blown at some instances!
The making of Marico from The Bombay Oil company was a task, and they took the risks and today are standing strong as Marico. This book is a storehouse of all the risks, challenges and cooperation a company goes through, the relation it makes with its employees, customers and much more.
I really enjoyed read the concept 3Ps i.e., People, Product and Profit. Along with the book also has a lot pictures from the past days of their family, growth and company's news. The cover in itself is soo exotic and unique. I really loved the thought behind it. ❤
The ideas, marketing, business building and expansion all are there as a journey and I am in love with it all. I hope I will get to learn more about it forever.
I recommend this book to all the people who love reading the real life struggles of big companies like this one. Also I forgot to mention that Marico is the company which makes Parachute Coconut oil, Saffola, and some other popular products. So you will love reading it.
Have you used Parachute Oil? Or any products from the co. Marico? I’m sure you all have, but do you know how the co. rose to fame? This book is all about how Marico came into existence and how it grew manifolds.
Mr Mariwala describes his journey of making his dream a reality through his struggles and constant belief in himself. Reading about his life struggles and lessons, I learnt so much.
Beautifully written, this book won’t bore you but you’ll get to learn so many corporate secrets. From a homegrown brand to a leading international FMCG, Marico has definitely established itself in the market.
I absolutely loved reading the book and the best part is the knowledge I gained through it. Definitely recommended for people who are into corporate world or wishes to become an entrepreneur.
The book is a biography of Marico - the company, and an autobiographical sketch of one of the most successful FMCG tycoons from India. The book is a treasure trove providing
- A peep into the dynamics of a successful Family business that beats the odds of "every third generation bites the dust" - A glimpse of an entrepreneur leader, who beat the mighty multinational corporations - A Story of Marico that set new benchmarks in Corporate Governance
It's a contemporary tale o Hero's journey where you get to see David beat Goliath - beating the odds, scaling up, failing, and succeeding multiple times.
True to Marico saying "mind is like a parachute, it works only when it's open", this book is bound to open a parachute for entrepreneurs (promoter or heir apparent), leaders in Professionally managed and the Family-run companies seeking to add significance to their success.
The book shares the story of the making of Marico, from being a division under Bombay Oil Company to an independent company under Harsh Mariwala. It shares strategies and innovations which were used by the company to grow market share by leveraging their brands Parachute and Saffola. They utilized these 2 legacy brands to the fullest, stopped MNCs entering their core oil market, made acquisitions and entered new markets in Middle East, Africa and South East Asia. Harsh's learning quest led to seek knowledge from Ram Charan, a professor and business leaders which benefitted the company. It also shared the transition of a family led to a professional led company at the end of Harsh's stint. I found the book boring, as it felt like reading a theoretical book.
I mean what do we think of building a company ground up! Harsh Mariwala- the founder of Marico shared his experience and learning of a business in this amazing book Harsh Realities.
The book in itself is so insightful and interesting that I am not even sure where to begin with. So I’ll sum it up like this-
The professional life of Harsh Mariwala and inner intricacies of the firm will keep you gripped. The go-getter approach and the zeal of an entrepreneur who drives a firm as big as this is the highlight for me and if you are into entrepreneurial books and working this book would interest you through and through.
An amazing insight into making of Marico the parent company of our favourite coconut oil Parachute, for the main man himself Mr. Mariwala.
If you were born in India it’s impossible you haven’t used parachute coconut oil in one way or the other.
This book is a gem for anyone who is curious to know what went into building one of India’s most prestigious FMCG company.
Mr. Mariwala along with his mentor and advisor Prof. Ram Charan give you a complete account of the what went into building Marico from a family owned trading business to a fmcg company and all possible management lessons along it.
Outstanding!!! The finest writing from a man who made a company , brand and a great bouquet of products. A company and all who worked in it defied established norms to become a respected FMCG company in fierce competition from MNC with deep pockets and also withstood threats from such MNC. A bold promoter and entrepreneur who made the path breaking move towards professional management. Extremely well written, lucid and so readable . It was a treat reading this book and I finished reading it in one single with breaks for meals, bathroom visit and for my evening walk.
My new favourite business book. This is not only the story of Marico, but also a history on the evolution of business in Bharat over the last 40 years.
Simply written, this book gives insights into the most successful homegrown FMCG company in India. I haven’t read another business book which gives you this kind of access or insight into a company’s board, a founders feelings and the creation of a brand.
Highly recommended for entrepreneurs in India.
This is going to be one of the classic business books that every management student in India reads
