Bereits der junge Thomas Mann hat die kurze Prosa als seine Form entdeckt und früh zur Meisterschaft entwickelt. Über Jahrzehnte hinweg hat der Autor immer wieder Erzählungen verfasst, die zu den wichtigsten dieses Genres gehören, darunter ›Der kleine Herr Friedemann‹ (1897), ›Tonio Kröger‹ (1903), ›Tristan‹ (1903), ›Der Tod in Venedig‹ (1912), ›Herr und Hund‹ (1919), ›Mario und der Zauberer‹ (1930) oder ›Die vertauschen Köpfe‹ (1940).

Thomas Mann was a German novelist, short story writer, social critic, philanthropist, essayist, and Nobel Prize laureate in 1929, known for his series of highly symbolic and ironic epic novels and novellas, noted for their insight into the psychology of the artist and the intellectual. His analysis and critique of the European and German soul used modernized German and Biblical stories, as well as the ideas of Goethe, Nietzsche, and Schopenhauer. His older brother was the radical writer Heinrich Mann, and three of his six children, Erika Mann, Klaus Mann and Golo Mann, also became important German writers. When Hitler came to power in 1933, Mann fled to Switzerland. When World War II broke out in 1939, he emigrated to the United States, from where he returned to Switzerland in 1952. Thomas Mann is one of the best-known exponents of the so-called Exilliteratur.

«Niemand stirbt unfreiwillig. Das Aufgeben des Lebens und die Hingabe an den Tod geschieht ohne Unterschied aus Schwäche, und diese Schwäche ist stets die Folge einer Krankheit des Körpers oder der Seele, oder beider. Man stirbt nicht, bevor man einverstanden damit ist.»

Thomas Manns Interpretation vom Tod mag zu hinterfragen sein, doch zeigt sie, auf welche Ebenen der Autor selbst in kurzen Erzählungen vordringt. «Der Wille zum Glück» ist eine Sammlung von Geschichten mit Witz und Tragik gleichermassen. Eine Sammlung, die beweist, dass das Streben nach Glück verschiedene Formen kennt und es auch im Unglück enden kann.

- "La volontà di essere felici":
Quanto è importante la volontà e la ricerca della felicità?
Ce lo racconta il narratore attraverso la vita di un suo caro amico, Paolo, ragazzo dalla salute cagionevole e amante dell'arte che dopo essere stato respinto dai genitori della donna che ama decide di mollare tutto e viaggiare per il Mondo cinque anni, al ritorno peró lo aspetterà una sorpresa.

- "La delusione":
In una allegra sera Veneziana, il narratore si trova ad ascoltare le confessioni di un uomo, sino ad allora sconosciuto, ormai disilluso dalla vita, incapace di "accontentarsi" della forza delle emozioni che riesce a provare e dello scetticismo che lo permea sin nel profondo.

- "L'armadio, una storia enigmatica":
Un distinto ma curioso signore vive la vita lasciando che gli accadimenti lo sopraffacciano, viaggia in treno senza una meta precisa, alla ricerca di qualcosa che egli stesso non sa, sceso dal vagone in una cittadina qualsiasi e trovata una stanza si lascerà trasportare dal caso sino a che una notte, nell'armadio della sua stanza non trova il fantasma di una donna con cui instaura un curioso rapporto di amicizia.

- "Un ora difficile":
Il protagonista, uno scrittore da tempo malato, durante la stesura di un opera inizia a riflettere quanto l'atto stesso di creare arte sia espressione di talento ma anche quanto dolore e fatica si debbono impegnare per creare la stessa.

"La volontà di essere felici" è una raccolta di Thomas Mann, pubblicata nel 1905 formata da quattro brevi racconti in cui si scoprono personaggi malati, nel fisico e spesso nell'anima, che "lottano" contro la vita e ció che la rende "piena" per gli altri.
Una scrittura, a volte quasi al limite dell'ermetico ma capace in poche parole di addentrarsi nell'animo dei personaggi che l'autore vuole raccontare, un viaggio che porta il lettore in un percorso filosofico ma allo stesso tempo concreto.
Quattro racconti fra il decadente e lo speranzoso che pur sembrando semplici e lineari, in realtà meritano più di una lettura per essere compresi nel profondo.

Es ist beeindruckend, wie Thomas Mann in jungen Jahren schon solche sinnreiche Erzählungen hervorbringen konnte. Es scheint, als verfügte er mit 18 Jahren schon über eine Fülle an Wortschatz und sprachlicher Klarheit, die die meisten Menschen in ihren Lebzeiten nie erreichen werden. Darüber hinaus erzählt Mann von Lebensituationen, die dem Leser fremd weil beispiellos erscheinen, und dennoch sind die zugrundeliegenden Gedankengänge und Gefühle verwandt und nachvollziehbar. Jede Erzählung ist ein Zeugnis Mann's scharfer psychologischer Analysen zur Freude eines jeden Lesers. Auffallend ist, dass Manns Lieblingsthemen schon in seinen ersten Erzählungen sehr präsent sind: Liebe, Tod und Krankheit. Besonderen Eindruck machten auf mich "Der kleine Herr Friedmann", "Tobias Mindernickel" und "Luischen".

Ich mochte vor allem "Der kleine Herr Friedemann", "Der Weg zum Friedhof" und "Tristan". Es empfiehlt sich, die Novellen nicht direkt hintereinander zu lesen, weil die Themen sich doch sehr stark wiederholen. Über mehrere Wochen verteilt, fand ich Mitreißendes, Emotionales und Nachvollziehbares, und im Fall von Tristan auch erstaunlich Witziges. Trotzdem mußte ich mir die Geschichten teils erkämpfen, man fällt nicht so hinein wie bei modernen Erzählern.

ha sigut una lectura per la uni, l’última de intro a la literatura alemanya. d’aquest recull només he llegit el pequeño señor Friedemann i la voluntat de ser feliz. ambdós m’han agradat molt, més el primer que no pas el segon. ha sigut un bon inici per llegir Mann que segur que seguiré llegint. m’ha agradat aquest autor i els seus relats.

Pequeños relatos que nos llevan a pensar en muchos temas diferentes. "La voluntad de ser feliz", relato que le da el título a la colección, es una historia magnífica que nos invita a reflexionar sobre el poder de la esperanza de la Felicidad contrastándola con la Felicidad en sí.

Thomas Mann schreibt sehr gut, aber sehr wiederholend. Die Motive sind oft dieselben. Erschreckend. Vielleicht wollte er sie gar nicht veröffentlichen?

Cuesta leer un libro de cuentos de un tirón y más si cada cuento te deja sensaciones tan ambiguas. Es la única manera de entender por qué me tardé tanto tiempo en terminarlo.

Con todo, tampoco logro identificar la sensación final. Me desconcierta.
