The Days of Joseph

Rate this book
Joseph’s family just started a war they’re going to lose.

Two days ago, his half-sister Dinah was kidnapped and raped by the prince of Shechem. Now Joseph is trapped between his brothers, clamoring for an attack on the fortress city, and his father, who knows they can’t win.

Personally, Joseph would rather not die for a lost cause, however, he may not have much choice.

When two of his brothers launch a vicious raid on the city to rescue Dinah, Joseph’s world is plunged into chaos. And as news of the treacherous attack spreads, his family find themselves hemmed in by enemies on every side. In desperation they flee south, to Bethel, risking the dangerous journey to reach a place where Joseph’s father believes God Himself will come to their aid.

Except, there’s a reason they haven’t been to Bethel before. Jacob has his own secrets, a promise made to God before Joseph was even born that could come due at a terrible price.

But they may not have a choice, because, as the smoke from the ruins of Shechem drifts skywards, God Himself is looking down on them.

Watching and waiting.

And He won’t wait forever.

This is an adaptation of the story of Genesis 34 from the Bible.

This is an excellent reading of historical fiction. My only disappointment is that I have to wait to continue reading about Joseph and what happened with his relationship with his brothers. The author did a great job of making the characters real, and showing the different aspects of Joseph and his relationship with others. The history of that time is fascinating. Their culture, their connection to God, their sacrifices to God, their attitudes about death, everything is so different from today. The historical connections to the foundations of the beginning of Israel and the twelve tribes born out of the twelve sons of Jacob made this book even more interesting.

Days of Joseph

Love Biblical historical fiction based on fact. This author gives scriptures to verify the actions and plainly tells you was he imagined.

I Can Believe It

Since most of what happened in this story was not in the Bible it was easy to just imagine right along with the author that what was happening was pretty accurate to their reality.

All it takes is a little glimpse into our modern families of yours, mine, and ours. There is a huge dynamic in these blended families that our last generation has become quite familiar with that their parents and grandparents had much less experience with in their time

The truth is there are no perfect people and thus no perfect families. Jacob's family is no exception to that and what is recorded is really messed up indeed.

It doesn't take much to imagine the messed up brotherly relations going all the way back to when the brothers were first appearing from a different momma.

I enjoyed this short story and found it to be very likely accurate to a degree that would probably amaze us all.

The Days of Joseph pales in comparison to Noble’s own The Days of Elijah. Repetitive language and a few grammatical mistakes make parts of the book difficult to enjoy. Still though, this book creatively captures moments in young Joseph’s life that may have shaped his relationships with his family and led him to believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and his father, Jacob.

Derived from parts of Genesis 34 and 35, The Days of Joseph tells of God’s work through Jacob from Joseph’s perspective. There were times I questioned the author’s attempts at conveying the stories from this point of view, but sticking through to the end of the afterword, I found myself appreciative of the unique storyline and looking forward to see how it could have set up a continuation of the story.

This isn’t the Sunday school version of Joseph’s story it’s raw, real, and brimming with tension. A family spiraling after a brutal act of violence, brothers clashing, a father haunted by old promises, and the looming presence of a watching God? It all screams high stakes and emotional depth.

The idea of Joseph caught between loyalty, fear, and destiny is powerful. You can feel the weight of every decision, the danger closing in, and the burden of a faith that demands something costly.

If the writing matches the energy of the blurb, this is going to be an emotional, soul-stirring ride through one of the Bible’s most dramatic turning points. I’m ready for it.

Trouble in the Camp

Joseph was the youngest son in his father's dysfunctional family. His father, Jacob, had four wives, and his mother, Rachel, was expecting a baby. One day, while visiting the neighboring city, his half-sister, Dinah, gets raped and kidnapped by the prince of the town. Furious, her brothers, Simeon and Levi, slaughter the men of the entire town to free their sister. Of course, this brings disaster for Jacob's family, and they flee for their lives. On the journey, Rachel gives birth to Benjamin and dies as a result. Joseph is heartbroken.

This book was well written, and an exciting read, but a bit too detailed for my taste. I was thrown off by some of the descriptions included in the story of Dinah… I did not expect the book to describe it from Shechem’s point of view, and felt like that was unnecessary. In the Bible (Genesis 34), this is a dark story, and not one I would have written a dramatized version of.
To be fair, the book is not only about the story of Dinah. Later in the book, it switches to Joseph, and I thoroughly enjoyed that part.
Because of the detailed descriptions in the part of the story about Dinah, I (as 15-year-old girl) would not recommend this book to teens. I would, however, recommend “Days of Elijah”(also by John Noble), which my 13-year-old sister and I read together and loved. John Noble is a great author, and I am excited to read more of his books… but may have my mom preview them first.🙂

GREAT READ

I liked the author's way of making the Biblical characters come alive. The way the author wrote about the animosity of Joseph's brothers was well written. Plus I liked the characters that aren't mentioned in the Bible. I like learning amount the customs of this long ago days. It was kind of like a history lessons on the movements of Joseph's family. It takes a lot of knowledge to write about the Bible and keep the Scriptures intact.

Bringing The Story to Life

This was a very entertaining book. What I want now is the rest of the story! Given the development of the relationship of Joseph and his brothers, and knowing the rest of the story as I do, I would love to read the "To Be Continued!" I know you'll handle it well.

I recently finished The Days of Joseph by John Noble, and overall, I really enjoyed it. The storytelling was strong, and I appreciated how the author brought Joseph’s world to life with vivid detail and emotion. It gave me a deeper sense of his journey—from the pit to the palace—and how God was at work through it all.

That said, I do wish the book hadn’t focused so much on Joseph’s love life. While I understand the desire to explore that aspect of his story, it sometimes felt like it overshadowed the more powerful spiritual and leadership elements that make Joseph such a compelling biblical figure.

Still, it was a good read and offered fresh insight into a familiar story. I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys biblical fiction, especially if you're looking for a new perspective on one of the Bible's most inspiring characters.

It was a slow read, in that it got a little boring about halfway through. Tells the story well, though. Can't wait to read where he is sold off and goes to Egypt, and then the real adventure begins.

I think I did this to myself… I picked this book with a mindset of what I wanted to read in the story. Well it wasn’t that.
It opened with Dinah and you see some of the biblical happenings with the brother etc. so 5 stars for accuracy.
I was just hoping for more…
