This is a phenomenal series. Author M.L. Hamilton set out to write a book a month, capturing the drama, pathos, humor and challenges of women in today's society. She, in doing so, has tackled deeply ingrained social mores and explored how each woman in the series finds her way through without losing a sense of self. Twelve different women take on twelve life-altering events. Some are successful, some are not.

Homelessness, drug addiction, single parenthood, military widowhood, breast cancer, alcoholism, late-in-life love affairs, cultural prejudices, lifestyle prejudices are just some of the tribulations that face the heroines of The Year of Discovery Box Set. Hamilton never flinches, never turns away from a veracious examination of each conflict; never takes a sensational or easy way out. And neither do the women that populate these pages.

For me as the narrator of The Year of Discovery, it was a marvelous challenge to bring forward these women from every culture, socio-economic condition, lifestyle, and age group. But more significantly it was an opportunity to truly collaborate and to bond with Hamilton as the creative team we have become.

When I finished recording The Year of Discovery Box Set with the final installment December, I took a moment to record in real time what it was like to finish such an adventure. I invite you to share that moment with me. Click hear to visit my Soundcloud page and hear my thoughts immediately upon finishing The Year of Discovery Box Set audiobook.

This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:

I've already listened to all the books in the series in their separate smaller boxes - but if you haven't, don't miss this opportunity to get all 12 stories in one set cause I guarantee you: once you've started you'll want to go on and on and on until the last word in the last book:)

It's a fantastic set of tales, in so many different tones and touching on so many difficult issues that concern modern women: from racial and sexual abuse to home violence to addictions to lethal diseases to women's rights... whatever problem you can think of, you'll probably find it there. But do not feel scared or overwhelmed by the sheer range and the seriousness and heaviness of the issues covered - they are tackled with tact and subtlety and are woven into fantastically written tales, full of strong women you can identify with and their friends and families. It's so difficult for me to choose one particularly close to my heart - each one is so different from the others, all of them unputdownable...

For more of my reflections on individual books, just visit my reviews for each box set: The Winter of Discovery, The Spring of Discovery, The Summer of Discovery, and The Fall of Discovery. But just to sum it up, here's what I wrote in my review for the last of the 3-book sets, The Fall of Discovery:

"It's a wonderful series of tales of women who face so many different problems, but come out of their turmoils stronger, wiser, more powerful in mind... Thank you for the journey, Ms Hamilton, it was a real pleasure to meet all of them:)
Narration by Ms Hazen was wonderful throughout the whole series; so many women got their feelings, anxieties, fears, but also joys and triumphs voiced out thanks to her:) Her interpretations of all the stories were very well done, making the women seem real to us."

And I still maintain that opinion:) and I still enjoy every tale in the series with the same emotional involvement as the first time I met this amazing bunch of women created by Ms Hamilton. So don't wait, just grab the set - you definitely won't regret that decision:)

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the narrator and found it inspiring. I don't listen to much fiction, instead I prefer more action and suspense, which is now happening as the series grows. It all started with a death of a daughter, sister, and friend, when she leaves a personal message to every family member to be read after her death. Meredith's death has brought twelve women together, each drawing strength from the very tragic time for the Yale family. Her death has touched all these women, many of them through her youngest sister. It's twelve stories of women taking control of their own lives. Every type of emotion is on display as the stories of twelve very different women are told. Each book is inspiring and uplifting, as each women struggles to be what they want to be. This combination of author and narrator never fails to draw you into their world. Very much worth listening too.

Twelve women, all facing their own challenges, are all connected in some way to one woman... when Meredith passes away, it sets things in motion for each of these ladies to deal with their issues.

ML Hamilton writes with such feeling and emotion. She’s not afraid to tackle tough topics, and she does it with care and consideration. I highly recommend this series!

Kelley Hazen is the perfect narrator to bring this series to life. It’s so much more than just reading a story... You really get a sense of each characters personality and you can feel all the emotions as she performs. Truly an emotional experience.

More than just a good read.

Good stories but much more. A tale of seeing oneself fail but then try again and that to make it we need not only our own strenght but the help of the people around us. A delightful plot about how if we help someone they in turn can help us even when we don't realize we need any.
