It was somewhat enjoyable yet short and forgettable. After reading, I forgot the majority of the plot.
Everything just felt kinda lacking, the magic system, the plot, characters. Characters from Born of Earth returned but they changed a lot for some reason.
I loved the setting and wish it was described more. We meet new races and don't get any information really, I will be continuing on with the series as I sensed it's potential, even though its forgettable.

I enjoyed it. There are a few slow spots right after the beginning, so don't let that stop you once you get to the middle it takes off and gets really interesting.

Actual rating: 1.5/2 stars.

I am 98% sure that my depression didn't ruin this book for me. Still, it wasn't my best read of the month, to say the least.

I had two major issues with this book.
1: I felt like this was the fifth or sixth book in a series, not a first! It kept referencing events that seemed important to the storyline, as well as characters that didn't have anything to do with this story, but were apparently important to the MC. At times, it felt a lot like name dropping just for the sake of doing it. On the same note, there was no world building at all. The author jumped right in and seemed to expect the reader to know everything they did.
This, I found out toward the end of the book, was because this is the Xst book in a series. Or, at least in a world-series. A fact that wasn't mentioned anywhere, but I found out by looking up the author on here!
I love that there are multiple story ARCs in a world, because that's how real life works! That said, each new series have to start of like the reader hasn't visited your world beforehand. Doing anything else tasts of hubris, and I as a reader find it mildly insulting. I can't tell you why, but I do. If not for the fact that I didn't already own the rest of this series, I might avoid this author in the future because of this fact. I also own another book by them, the beginning to a new series, but I'm hesitant to picking it up because of this fact. I shouldn't have to buy and read 40 other books before the one I already own, that was marketed as the first in a whole new series! If you're going to write a world-series, give the world a name and then add each book into said series here on GR! Bind them together, so it's easy for the reader to see that this book may need some research before picking it up.

Sorry, I went off on a rant there. Apparently, this is something I have feelings about.

2: I always stood outside of it, and there was no real drive.
I will admit that I'm probably continuing on with the series, because I'm curious about it, but I kept feeling like something was missing. Yes, I've already addressed the lack of world building, but there was something more. I felt like there was something missing from the way the story was told, from the way the characters were introduced, and how they interacted. I at times felt like I'd missed a whole chapter of bonding and evolving!
And, considering how many books this author has published, I'd have expected better.

I also feel like I have to address the age group here. The MC is supposedly 18, and taking her last year of High School online. But among the friends she make in Scotland, everyone seem to be living on their own, having jobs, or studying. I really think this book would have been better if the MC was 20, and taking a year off from school to study her magic or something like that. It would make it all a lot more believable. As it stands, it feels a little like the author forced the MC into the role as a Young Adult so she could have the marketing opportunity. Which is a shame, really. College is still considered YA, after all!

I was very torn on the rating, because there are so many things about this book that just weren't up to par. Then again, it was all just ok, a little meh, but at the same time just the kind of meh I needed right now. So many mixed feelings about this book, it's not even funny...

An awesomely written book! Such a treasure trove of imagination. Georjayna has taken a trip to Scotland to visit her cousin. Once she touched down it was almost as if she were in another dimension and I was right there along with her. Georjie saw a vision of a woman being buried inside a castle wall which, as she found out actually happened 300-400 years previously. This peaked her interest and from there she started a personal investigation to find out the answers as to what was going on. Georjie’s talent as an earth elemental came in handy at times and at other times got her into a bind. She learned that she should never trust a fae and yet the fae showed her many enlightening visions. I would love to see this book made into a movie. Ms Knorr’s descriptions of the visions Georjie was experiencing were ethereal and awe inspiring. I also experienced heart palpitations as the budding romance developed between Georjie and Lachlan plus her cousin and Evie. Many surprises crept up in this story and the ending left me wanting more. Not necessarily a cliffhanger but a desire to find out what happens next. It was such a joy to read this book and I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

I loved the elemental series, so I was happy to find out, that A. L. Knorr continued to write parallel storylines/novellas for some of the main characters.

As Georjie was one of my favorite characters, I enjoyed the book and the story-building in Scotland.
What bothered me is, that if you know about the other elemental books in the first place, Georjie and Jasher had a very deep connection in the main book. I would go so far to say, that they were in love because of the experiences they shared and the way they treated each other.

In this book however, Jasher fell in love with an other girl and was an entirely different character. Nothing reminded me of the old Jasher, who was kind and cautious of his surroundings and selfless.
The Jasher in this book was focused on the new girl, at some times, he didn’t gave a shit about Georjayna and even tried to use her, for finding things out, even if she clearly said, that she doesn’t want to.
Also I cannot imagine Jasher to be this way. That seems out of his nature and was just used, to create a new story, which wasn’t necessary in my opinion.

For the replacement of Jasher, the author created a new character, who is Lachlan.
I love Lachlan, he is such a smart, kind and comforting person to Georjie and he’s kind of the Jasher from the old books in a new character.

Besides the character swap, the story was cool and the book was easy to read. It was very mysterious and creepy at times, but that was quite enjoyable for me personally. All in all, the first book of this series was nice to read and I definitely will continue with the series.

This wasn't a bad start to the series, but it definitely could've been better. I would've liked to see the characters and their relationships developed a bit longer, and a bit more realistically. The characters themselves were entertaining enough, but I wasn't sold on their feelings for one another.

I wouldn't call this a plot-driven book, but it wasn't a character-driven book either. I think I'd call it curiosity-driven. I had to know what was going on, and hey! If that's what it takes to pull me through the story, by all means, keep doing it!

I am still undecided about whether or not I want to read the next book, but I won't put this series down lightly. There are some promising characters and situations that could intrigue me enough to pick up the following story. I suppose only time will tell.

This first book in the series hooks you immediately. It's branded as a Young Adult work which makes this 65 yr old a bit smug at my obviously youthful persona 😉. No doubt about it, A.L. Knorr is a brilliant writer. Her characters are realistic & their specific traits, talents & personalities thoroughly hook the reader. Add in the storyline, plot twists, references to Canada 😉 and things ethereal and well what's not to like? (Particularly when you get to the end of the book & realize you've got two more to enjoy.)

I have received an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

However, I will fully admit I'm a tad bias because I have yet to read anything by A.L. Knorr which I didn't like (most of times "love" instead of "like"). I have discovered her while the main "Elemental Origins" series was being written and I fell in love with her story of a group of teenage friends that end up receiving or developing supernatural powers during the most adventurous summer of their lives (up to that point).

This book shows us how the Earth elemental - Georjayna (Georjie) continues to discover her powers beyond the initial book ("Born of Earth"). I would strongly recommend you read that book first, because it give a better basis to understanding Knorr's elemental universe and to get some of the references and relationships in this book.

Beyond that little aspect, I absolutely recommend this book for the awesome plot and storytelling. Knorr manages to do amazing research on where her stories happen and this time she presents a somewhat cozy town in Scotland. I loved getting to know the lore and the characters, which seem believable and well-rounded.

My only complaint is that I have to wait for the next book to find out more - about Georjie's powers, about the fae, about the dynamics between... well, everything. I would have loved to get a 1000 page book with everything, but I know from previous series that Knorr will not leave any subplot unfinished. So now I just have to try and be patient...

Her journey as a wise continues !

Georgia gets an invitation to Scotland from Jasher, or so she thinks !!! A woman picks her up when she arrives, with a sign with her name on it, saying Jasher sent her. but Hashed days he didn't send her, cuz he didn't even know she was coming to Scotland !!! So strangeness abounds already right from the start . While she's there, they find a body that was purposely buried inside a brick wall! Upon investigation, Georgia thinks she knows who the woman was, about 3-4 hundred years ago. She also becomes fairly close to Lachlan , one of the local guys that works with Jasher. The body turns up missing, mystery ensues, and evil appears. So do the fae, helping, but not very nicely. They treat her like an ignorant novice, which she kind of is, as she's had no one to teach her how to be a wise !!! So when she learns she did not win the battle with this evil, she vows to be ready when it returns. Great new adventure and storyline into Georjies life as a wise. I hope there's someone soon in the picture to help her grow and learn her new abilities !!! Looking forward to the next installment of this series !!!

I was enthralled reading this very exciting thriller set in the Scottish highlands and which start with the arrival of Georgjayna, arriving to visit from Canada. She is a wise and has earth magical powers, which she tries to use to help out her friends in the castle she is living in. They are working hard to remove some ancient ruins but a thorn tree keeps hindering them. Georgie tries to come to their aid but finds that her magic is doing the opposite and the thorn bush becomes worse. Then they find a skeleton entombed within the mortar of the ruins and from thereon all hell is set loose in the supposedly sleepy town of Blackmouth. The story takes on a very dark twist when an eldritch appears, the skeleton disappears from the morgue, a friend disappears and then is found in a coma and Georgjie is taken to the fae dimension known as Stavarjak. There she meets Queen Alphame and as usual nothing is as it seems when the fae are involved. Was she set up by Laec and did Fyfa really intend helping her save her friend, Evelyn? I love the intricacy of the tale, the strength and bravery Georgjie shows as she stands her ground when facing such horrors and the beautiful depiction of the fae realm, Stavarjak. I love the fight between the dark and light magical forces, and the romance between both Jasher and Evelyn, and Georgjie and Lachlan, and look forward to reading book 2 in this very magical series.

Georjie is happy to be in the Scottish Highlands to visit an old friend, but something is amiss when she discovers he didn't actually invite her. Yet the people are friendly, and she's given a room at Blackmouth Castle that has its own mysteries. A centuries old body is found on the castle grounds, and Georjie's magic shows her a frightening memory of what happened to that individual. With the help of her adopted cousin and a gorgeous amateur historian, she tries to discover not only what happened to the mummy but what is happening to a young woman in town now. If she doesn't hurry, not only will there be a new body, but she could be next.

This is the first book in a NA paranormal fantasy series, Earth Magic Rises. The settings with Blackmouth Castle and the town are rich and detailed. I was easily transported into the Highlands and wanting to explore more. Georjie is a smart young woman with a big heart. She has powers she's barely learned about yet, but they have great potential. I really loved the peek into the fae realm that exists alongside the real world, and all the fae lore in the book. I did guess the twist, but it was so much fun getting there. It did feel like there were other stories I was missing out on when Georjie would mention stuff that had happened in the past.

High in the hills of Scotland, an ancient evil has returned. One young woman struggling to master her magic is the only hope to stop it……
On the cusp of womanhood, Georjie longs to unlock the full force of her fae-given powers. So when she’s invited to Scotland, she’s eager to explore the Highlands’ famed fairy realm hoping to find a mentor. But instead of unearthing a teacher, she discovers a mummified body within the walls of a seventeenth-century ruin.
Teaming up with a handsome amateur historian, she uses her earth-elemental gift to overturn the secrets hidden deep in the soil. But never far from the trail of clues lurks a shadowy creature on the hunt for prey. And Georjie fears it may have found its first target when a local girl vanishes, only to be discovered in an open grave with her life slipping away…
Can Georjie break the curse before ancient evil claims an innocent victim?

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable.
Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story.
Can't wait to read more of these.
Recommend reading.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

What a great story. This author is quickly becoming a favorite. I am loving this series. Such great characters and the villian is starting out to be outstanding as well.
Georgia gets an invitation to visit Scotland from her friend Jasher. When she arrives there is a woman with a sign that had her name on it and picked her up. When she arrives Jasher is stunned sice he didn't send an invitation. So the story instantly put me on alert. She is confused but ends up staying. While watching the guys working one day, they uncover a body purposely buried in a brick wall.
They call the authorities and they take the body.
Meanwhile she gets close to Lachlin one of the guys that work with Jasher. Then 2 things happen, the body goes missing and Jashers girlfriend is taken. As they search for her, they realize that an ancient evil is awakened and a shodow creature is prowling for prey. Georgie doesn't even know how to use her fae powers. She has an earth magic which is cool. She needs to find a way to use it properly. She is also getting visits from a fae named Layeck and he seems to leave Georgie with more questions than answers. She isn't sure she can even trust him. Meanwhile they need to find a way to stop the evil plaguing her and her friends.

I was happy to see the author had continued on with this character. I have read almost all of the other books in the elemental world and loved the stories. Georji was one of my favorite characters. Would love more on Akiko (Just Saying!!)
I think there was great story development and enough action to keep you intrigued. There was a little bit of a love story going on but not too much to take away from the main story which was good. The story did leave me with more questions but I didn't hate the cliffhanger at the end because it was more of a lead into the next story.
I also think this author is exceptional at writing and telling stories however, there were some proofreading errors and she kept going back and forth between "the Laird" and Gavin who are the same person, no clue why she did this and it was even in the same paragraph it was totally unnecessary and the use of the Gaelic and the Scottish speak for us people who don't know it made it hard to read luckily it was only brief but without anything to reference it did make those parts cumbersome which is why I can't give this a full 5, but it is definitely a solid 4.5

I can not begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this book. I actually delayed finishing it because I wanted, no... I needed it to last longer - for months!
I begins with such a mystery surrounding the little Scotland town and its castle. Georjayna was invited by her friend and step cousin Jasher to spend some time with him while he works on restoration.
I enjoyed the change in their relationship, as well as all new characters and the new magical world.
Mysteries were aplenty, few still left unanswered to which I am grateful for. I did my best to figure out what would happen next and failed miserably.
This was so masterful, so vivid so full of substance and emotion my poor heart swelled.
When she was questioned by the inspector I felt my palms sweat. The final confrontation at the end had me stop and blink because my eyes were glued to the words. So excited to read the next book! I have questions that need answers!
I received an arc copy and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Decent

*possible spoilers because it affected my reading*

3.5 for me

I waited too long to read this when I first discovered the friends but I didn’t want to say goodbye so I decided to read it today.

I went into this with the intention of watching Georgie and Jasher get back together after the summer ended and instead he’s with someone else. I was so sure they’d be together that I kept waiting for the girl to be cruel or for foul magic to be involved. Jasher was even different and it seemed disingenuous at first. Then eventually it didn’t seem to be the case and before I knew it the book was done. I missed out on all the magic and chaos and even her thing with someone else.

The book read different for me but at the same time not. Georgie is still having to deal with what she is and the newness that comes with it. New races are introduced. More people to meet. I’m a romantic at heart so sadly the fast-pace I usually like didn’t sell me the “we’re over and friends now” storyline. I’m going to read the second book though now knowing how it all is.

There are very introductory books to their worlds and then there are books like this one, that do NOT explain anything about their world and let the reader to collect every detail in hope for one to be important for the plot. In my opinion, this is an error. The author shouldn't confuse you with so many information without a background of what's happening.

When I started this book I thought it would be about a common girl Georjayna who found the remains of a corpse of an ancient witch. And everything was going well until they suddenly tell us that she "used her magic" and that she "needed dirt to use it". And all that confused me a lot plus there's not many answers in the book.

However, I liked it. It was not one of the best books I read because half the time I didn't understand what was happening and the other half there was a romance as suddenly as not very credible that it bored me. Although the story of the witch seemed cool and more with the final contradictions of the book.

I guess I'll read the second book!

On the lame side

Stuff happens. No explanations are given. Spoilers ahead… Starts out with our heroine being invited to visit her friend Jasher and disappointed that he doesn’t meet her himself and sends someone else to pick her up. Only he never invited her and didn’t send anyone to pick her up. So who did? You might think they would be curious and maybe a bit concerned about that but they just forget about it after page 35 and never mention the unknown pickup person either. I assume it will be relevant to the story in a future book but has nothing to do with the plot in this one. And Jasher is drinking too much which is noted as odd because he didn’t in Ireland. Why? Who knows but again nothing to do with the plot. They do triumph over the wicked witch. Georjayna uses her powers to crush the witch into the earth which you would think is good until the fae guy shows up at the end with a “what have you done you fool” (paraphrased). Turns out the witch must be in contact with the ground in order to heal and come back which you think one of the fae would have mentioned as important earlier but nooo. So look for the witch to come back in the next book and maybe an explanation for the mysterious invitation and drinking problem. Or don’t. I’m not planning to.

Surprised

I read the elemental Origins Series over a year ago. Then another author I read regularly started a reading challenge and we had to read books with predominantly green covers. In my search, I found this book and began reading. It took me a couple chapters to realize this was a continuation of Georgie"s Story from the previous series. What a delight as I loved the original series. I love that while this is tied to that series, it is a story all on it's own and I wouldn't feel lost if I hadn't read that series.

This story is full of adventure and growth. The characters are still figuring things out and that is what keeps me engrossed in the story. I am looking forward to continuing Georgie's story in the next book.

What to say about this one. It took me a long time to actually finish it. When I started reading it few months ago it was a slow start so I left it and forgot about it. Fast forward few months later I decided to finish it and did so in one day, which was yesterday. Overall it's a nice book but I skipped few pages due to repetition and dragging of some scenes. I also did not feel any chemistry between Lachlan and Georjie. There is really no romance or much of it in this book. The suspense with the bones of a dead woman, shadowy creature, etc., it kept my interest for a bit but once the last few chapters came I just didn't care. Based on this book I have no interest in continuing to next one. 2.5 stars almost 3 :-)

I am reading these out of order it seems, as I read the sequel series to this first and there is another series beforehand. However, because I was familiar with a couple of the characters, I wasn’t lost about Georgi being a Wise (how that came about is in the previous series.) One review I read complained how the author brought up characters from the previous series and they didn’t know about those characters and almost seemed like name dropping. For me, it just makes me want to read the earlier series that much sooner. This was a fun, short, but suspenseful (but not too suspenseful) read. I didn’t want to put the book down each evening before bed. I can’t wait to dive into the next book.

A fast read. This contemporary YA story is the first in this series, but part of a shared world. Therefore, there are references to events and people that occurred in other books.
Our heroine seem out of place as an 18 year old. I’m sure it was done to appease the YA audience but the story (especially the romance) would make more sense if she was mid twenties. The setting of north Scotland is perfect, the casualness of the supernatural, and the acceptance of the fae and witch in the contemporary setting really make the story speed along.
Loved that the heroine is Canadian, 6 feet tall, and NOT smarter than everyone else in the room. Sometimes we all need a little help from our friends.

What a great series start. My husband listened to part of it and said he wanted it made into a movie. I can’t wait for the next one. While I was a bit disappointed that Georjie and Jasher weren’t getting back together. But her new flame seems to be a pretty good replacement. And it was fun to see Jasher find some happiness of his own in this book. I would highly recommend reading Born of earth prior to reading this series. In fact the whole earth elemental series would be a good place to start. Although this is a good story on its own characters are referenced from the other books and other situations from the other books mentioned. You will love it either way but it will make more sense.

I really like the concept and I love the Scottish witchy/fairytale vibes. The whole setting and atmosphere are great. I felt like I wanted a bit more development of... well everything lol. It all just kind of happens. Particularly relationship development was lacking for me. But I didn't realize til I finished it that this is the start of a third series within a larger world so perhaps if I went back and read the first 2 series I'd feel like the world was more developed. Not sure I'll do that, but I will at least read the next of this trilogy. I'll be looking into the earlier series as well because I think the world is interesting if I had a better grasp of it.

Bones of the Witch: A YA (Earth Magic Rises Book 1) (a spin-off of the bestselling Elemental Origins Series), my sixteenth read from author A.L. Knorr. Well-written, the characters, even the minor ones, are well developed with an attention-grabbing storyline. I’m a character reader, I get into the characters. Who and what they are. Why they do the things they do. The things that make the reader get invested into the characters and thereby the story. I’ll be reading more from this author & in this series! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
