This book is the translation of Fernando Ocariz's 1994 book titled The Mystery of Jesus Christ: A Christology and Soteriology Textbook. Father Ocariz is Vicar General of Opus Dei. He is a Catholic theologian who has published several books and who is regularly consulted by the Congregation of the Faith. He works at the Roman Curia, the central office of the Catholic Church.
This is a good Theology textbook and it is good that this has been translated to Filipino by Emmanuel C. Marfori in 2012. The Philippines is 85% Roman Catholic and even if that percentage and the number of young male people joining religious vocation, i.e., priesthood, are dwindling, the Roman Catholic Church is still the primary force in the country in terms of religion. This show of force will once again be seen in January 2015 when Pope Francis visits the Philippines for the first time. It will be another show that will put the Philippines in the limelight when it comes to religion.
Why did I read this book? I actually bought this last year during my first time to take the Basic Apologetics Course sponsored by Defensores Fidei Foundation. The lecture on Christology by Father Carlos Estrada was so interesting that I wanted to learn more about Jesus Christ. I think I did something more about Him in this Ocariz book but most of them are just reminders of what Fr. Estrada has already lectured. In fact, this year, 2014, Fr. Estrada was still the lecturer on Christology and I thought I had enough already with him the second time and when I finished the book.
Even if this is my second time to attend the course and listen to the 10 or so lectures (2-3 hours every Saturday), I am still far from being an expert on defending the Catholic faith. Well, first of all, I don't intend to be an expert. In fact, I don't know where I am going to use that knowledge. I don't even have a plan to teach catechism. I was just invited to the course by a former friend and I thought it was, and still is, a good distraction from my daily office grind. I also love reading and so the lecture series provides quick information that I could only get from spending hours and hours on reading books.
The main point of this book? That Jesus Christ should be the center of the faith. Jesus is the only way to the Father. Mary may be the way to Jesus but she is not the center of our faith. It is still Jesus. Period.
There are many historical studies or analysis presented in this book. The Catholic faith has been there for 2000 years (that's our claim), so there have been many theories and studies on the life of Jesus. This book has all of them but if you are not studying for priesthood this thick book can be a struggle to finish.
Overall, this is just an okay book to me. I don't really like it because it is thick and the Tagalog translation is old and not contemporary but I don't hate this because it is about our faith. The faith that I am supposed to defend being a child of God.
The Mystery of Jesus Christ provides an introduction to Christology and Soteriology that faithfully presents the teaching of the Magisterium in a fairly accessible manner without sacrificing depth—allowing this book to be fruitful for both study and prayer for anyone with an interest in better understanding Our Lord and the glorious salvation He offers to all men through His Church.
I used this book for a self paced class in Christology. The whole class was writing papers based on this book, and I really enjoyed the material. It was over my head at times but I learned a lot. This is a fantastic book and one of the first textbooks for school which I read every single page of. Because it was that good. !
