Miller Creek #1

To Catch a Hummingbird

Rate this book
Since her father’s death, twenty-three-year-old Lydia Miller stays busy, trying to keep the family farm afloat. It leaves little time to think and to regret what she did. Her mother runs the local bakery and unexpectedly sells their home without Lydia’s thoughts on the matter. Worse, they now must live with the local widower, and Lydia is expected to care for his children. Nothing in life has prepared her for the resistance she will face or the quick attachments she makes.

Widower Silas Graber fell right into the Bishop’s plan. He did need help, but he thought he was getting Hazel Miller not her daughter with a chip on her shoulder. Her ways are nothing like his late wife’s, and it’s clear she knows nothing about raising children.

However, he can’t help but notice how she quickly breathes life back into his world. And his children notice it, too. Before long, she has become a part of their lives, and she starts learning to leave the past behind her. And falls in love. But she’s not so certain Silas is ready to give his heart away again. Neither is he.

This book drew me in and captured my heart from the first chapter. It started out slowly and the Author didn’t rush the story. This was fine with me since I enjoyed the book and didn’t want to see the end come. It’s the first book in this series so I can read the other books to catch up where this book left off. This was a story of Sweet Amish Romance. The two main characters had lost loved ones and were still grieving when the book starts. I liked all the characters even though there were a few unlikeable ones to round out the book. Three adorable mischievous Amish children who missed their mother warmed my heart and bought a smile to my face. Three single women competed against each other to win Silas’s lonely heart. The ending brings an unpredictable event that stirs up the entire town and will make you want to read the next book in the series.

Hazel Miller lost her husband In a farm accident. Although she’s a hard worker at an Amish bakery in town , money is scarce and she must sell her home and move on. Her 23 year old daughter lives with her and doesn’t look forward to leaving the only home she’s ever known. Hazel, Bishop Schwartz and her brother in law Timothy Miller have made arrangements for her and Lydia to live with widower Silas Graber and his three young children. They will get free room and board in exchange for house keeping and childcare. Lydia will not be easily won over because she is set against leaving her home. She keeps a secret that she alone knows about her Fathers death. Silas is a compassionate man but he’s not so sure about this arrangement he has agreed to and especially with this younger woman who hasn’t any experience with children and has a chip on her shoulder and an attitude plus!

I highly recommend this book to readers of Amish Romance and fans of the Author.

I purchased a signed copy of this book at a book signing. All thoughts and opinions expressed here in this review are entirely my own.

I found this read very enjoyable, struggles that happen to many whether you’re Amish or not.
Lydia Miller is struggling with guilt, and her mother is strapped with medical bills, and when she finds away out she grabs it. Lydia doesn’t go kicking and screaming, but close, but with three motherless children her heart will be melting to help them.
Now poor Silas has to deal with Lydia, but all the other unmarried Amish maidens, who seem to set their bonnets for him. Also, watch some of these young woman who truly do not live their faith.
The title of the resonates as Lydia is like a flittering hummingbird, seems she is always going from one task to another, giving of herself to the misfortunate and those in need.
Will this young woman ever find love and a home of her own?
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Vinspire Publishing, and was not required to give a positive review.

Lydia Rose Miller is a bundle of energy, but she's also an emotional wreck. When we first meet her, she is filled with guilt, grief, anxiety, and frustration. Not your usual Amish maiden, right? This is one reason I enjoyed this book so very much. Author Mindy Steele understands the Amish way of life, but she also knows that it isn't exempt from problems, and she's woven an intriguing tale of a mother and daughter facing a financial burden that can't be resolved. Hazel Miller's decision for them to leave their home to help widower Silas Graber care for his three young children is certainly not a happy choice for her youngest daughter Lydia!

'Lydia knew little of Silas Graber other than he'd lost a wife, seldom spoke, and never smiled. Why, then, should she be expected to help him care for these three motherless children? She just couldn't, even though circumstances made it necessary'.

I loved the chemistry between Lydia and Silas, and it's apparent that their initial reservations toward each other may be temporary. I also enjoyed watching Lydia's maternal instincts blossom as she cares for these precious Graber children. Lydia finally experiences the best kind of emotions....love, joy, and hope. Until...a tragic accident threatens Miller Creek forever!

To Catch a Hummingbird is a touching, romantic, and realistic look at the Amish way of life and I look forward to returning to Miller Creek. I recommend this book to all who enjoy Amish fiction.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. There was no obligation for a favorable review. These are my own thoughts.

Life can change in a split second and send our lives into unexpected directions. Lydia Miller has found this to happen in her life. Struggling with guilt and a loss of sense of direction in her life after her father has passed away, she and her mother must now do whatever they can to continue to survive since they had to sell their home and farm. They are forced to move in and help a local widower, Silas, with his three children and home. Lydia has no experience working with children and feels she is totally out of her element. She has always been a very active, loving, giving person flitting from one act of service to another to help anyone in need.

Silas comes to see Lydia as a welcome surprise even though she does things so differently than his wife had done. She brings new life to their home, but he is not sure that even after four years of his wife being gone, and the attention of many of the unmarried women of their community, that he is ready to pursue a relationship. Will Lydia be able to overcome her guilt and fears, and Silas overcome his hesitation for a relationship?

I highly recommend this enjoyable book that you will not want to put down. I received a copy from NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op. The comments given are entirely my own.

To Catch a Hummingbird by Mindy Steele is Book 1 in the Miller Creek Series
This is the first book for me by this author and I am really looking forward to many more now.
Mindy Steele captured my heart with this delightful story line and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series, I can’t wait to see what happens with these wonderful characters.
Silas Graber has become my favorite character he is patient, caring and so very understanding. And he is also heartbroken over the loss of his wife, can he move on for his children’s sake or is he content where he is safe where life makes sence.
Lydia Miller is a young girl with such heart and compassion for others yet is carrying around the pain of the past on her young shoulders. Like a Hummingbird she never is in one place long enough to just be, to relax or ever breath in her day.
Can these two help each other move forward or are they Destin to remain in the place that holds them still.
Mindy Steele really has a way of captivating her readers, this book is a true page turner. I am so very excited to read book 2 in this series I don’t want to say good bye to these characters as I fell hard for each of them. This book is a true winner. Do your self a favor a read it, I highly recommend it!

This book and author are new to me.
The writing was well done and just the right amount of romance mixed in.
I thought Lydia was a little hard to get to know but as we read on we really find out why. But still I can relate to her a lot!
Silas too is a little bit hard to know.
I enjoyed getting to know him and his children.
I think the Amish way of life is truly charming but truth be told there's no way I could do it. It's the main reason why I'm fascinated with them and their simple way of life.
This book really had me turning the page to see if Lydia and Silas could work things out.
His children are just awesome!
I think Mary May is a beautiful and an usual name. She's the sweetest! I could actually picture her the way the author describes her.
I also got a few snickers out of this story. I love books that can make me do that.
I highly recommend this book. All opinions are my own.
Thank you Netgalley for a copy of this beautiful
story.

Mindy Steele has given us an outstanding book, To Catch a Hummingbird that was published by. It is the first in the Miller Creek Series.

Twenty-three-year-old Lydia Miller tries to help her mother, Hazel, a local baker, keep their farm going after her father's death. They try, but can not. Because they can no longer keep the farm, Hazel and Lydia must move to Silas Graber's property to help him care for his children. Lydia has little to no experience with children and of course, she does nothing like the children's mother had.

Before long Lydia and Hazel become an important part of the family, but can Silas move on from the past and live for the future?

You will love this 5-star book. Order yours today.

This first book of the Miller's Creek series was wonderful! The plot was interesting with characters that kept me turning the pages to finish and yet hating for it to be done. The author had me feeling a wide range of emotions throughout the book. I found myself laughing, crying, feeling Lydia's frustrations and yet felt the love she felt for others. Silas and his children brought deep emotions from the beginning but later added quie a few laughs too. I could envision each of the Graber children and they warmed my heart with their different personalities. When you add in the love within the family and the challenges they overcame it was a heartfelt story. I loved the surprise ending and never saw it coming which made it all the better. Overall I loved this book and can't wait for the second book in this series.

To Catch a Hummingbird is an enjoyable story of an Amish woman who blames herself for her father's death. She and her mother cannot keep up with all of the medical bills and take care of the farm. So the mother, Hazel, agrees to sell the farm and move to a widowers home to help care for his children. Lydia stays busy as much as possible. She thinks of Silas Graber, the widower, as someone who stays apart from others and is a stern man. As they get to know one another, her opinion begins to change. He is amazed at the difference she has made in his children in such a short time. Her former boyfriend comes back and confuses her some, but in the end she knows where her heart is and where it belongs. Great story!

A Powerful Story

This is a book I will read again. Powerful. Giving. Lydia's father has died and her mother sells their home. On top of that, her mother didn't ask for her thoughts.

The last thing she wants is to live with a widower with children. She is to take care of his children and bring a home that hasn't had a woman's touch in -- well, too long to a state of cleaniness. She is NOT happy. He isn't either. But the Bishop has helped set this up. They don't really have a choice. But the children -- they like her. And she likes them. Slowly, life for all gets a bit better.

There is such depth to this book. I loved it. My first read by this author but not my last.

To Catch a Hummingbird by Mindy Steele is a well written Amish romance.with likeable characters and a wonderful story line.
Lydia, along with her mother, has been trying to keep the family farm since the death of her father, The time has come though, to leave the farm and move on. But for Lydia, she doesn't have a say in what's ahead for her. She and her mother will be moving onto the farm of Silas Graber. a widow with three children. Of course, she goes into the change with an attitude but slowly, changes happen.

Lydia and Silas have to learned that the past is the past can't change it and to live in the past you miss what's right in front of you and you just end up hurting yourself and a lot of times those around you. You can grieve but if that's consume you then you'll be swallow up in darkness. These two learn from one another and the light comes in and they grow together. A moving story.

Loved the character development of the lead character, Lydia! At first she appears unlikeable but hang with her! The growth is worth the journey! And there is a chapter towards the end I’m still melting over! Can’t wait for the next one!

Mindy Steele is one of the authors I hope to catch up with this year. I can't believe I've been missing out on this 'new' voice in Amish fiction!

Love the Kentucky setting which is fairly unique to the genre. And Steele has created an alluring little community full of small town charm including the complex relationships that go along with it. A nice mix of Amish and Englischers including one specific character that I just wanted to purse-whomp in the worst way! Gah, but she was so meeeaaaannn. lol I love getting my dander up on behalf of a heroine. :-)

Lydia isn't your typical Amish maidel. She's passionate and impulsive and opinionated. Definitely not shy about speaking her mind, but she's not over-the-top argumentative either. Just feisty in an intriguing way and Silas is trying not to notice. :-)

He's a widower stuck in the past with three adorable and somewhat mischievous children who are soon won over by Lydia's unorthodox caregiving. And their dat isn't far behind.

A really sweet romance with deep emotional layers as both Silas and Lydia have personal issues they have to deal with before they can see their way clear to a future. There's also a nice cast of secondary characters to love (or hate) and some exciting town happenings that leave me waiting with bated breath for the second Miller Creek book which I just discovered is already out! Eeeep!!! I'll be reading The Butterfly Box very soon.

Another wonderful 5 star book by Mindy Steele. This book was riveting from start to finish and I cannot wait to read the next one in the series. Silas and Lydia are going to be one on my most memorable couples. The plot of the story was beautiful and written so brilliantly. This book made me cry, it made me angry, it made me talk to it out loud, it had me sitting of the edge of my seat and at certain times made me laugh. As I was reading it I remembered my childhood in England and going to Saturday morning movies. I remember how we cheered for the hero and heroine and how we booed very badly at the characters we didn't like. We clapped and waved for the great and happy moments and we huddled down in our seats for the bad and sad ones. This book painted such a vivid picture in my mind....I could see all the characters and I felt myself hissing and booing, and clapping and cheering. Mindy thank you for taking me on this journey back to my childhood with this captivating and enchanting story. If you are a lover of Amish fiction, a great story, a wonderful romance, believable and relatable characters that make you want to go out and buy the next book in the series, then please, please, please read this lovely book.

To Catch A Hummingbird is a wonderful story written by Mindy Steele. This is my first story written by this author and I enjoyed it a lot. Her characters are well developed and very likeable. There are secrets being kept throughout this story but when they are revealed this really make sense. Silas Graver is a widower and has three children he needs help with. When the Bishop comes up with a plan to help him it puts Lydia Miller and her mother in the middle of things. Lydia surely doesn't want to be there. Silas and Lydia butt heads more often than not and rumors start flying about Lydia which makes Silas wonder if he has agreed to something he doesn't want any part of. This is an inspiring story filled with forgiveness, love, and faith.

I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response and all opinions are my own. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others. I look forward to future books from this author.

I downloaded the Kindle version of this book after reading His Amish Wife's Hidden Past by Mindy Steele.
I enjoyed getting to better know the characters of Miller's Creek.
The only downside is the Kindle version needed more proof-reading by an editor. The first few pages are out of sync (like the preview got mixed in with the first couple of paragraphs). There were some grammatical errors throughout. And then the age of Lydia's mother and grandmother do not line up. The grandmother would have had to be 9 when the mother was born...
Overall, the book was well written and I enjoyed it. I will be downloading the rest in the series, especially after the way this book ends... I don't think I would have ended it the way it did but I know there are more in the series so it's like a "to be continued" in book form!

This is an amazing, beautifully-written story with characters that I quickly came to care about. The heartbeat of this story is Lydia and the wonderful heart she has for helping other people. Lydia has to adjust quickly to unexpected changes that come her way because of decisions made by her mother. At first she feels completely lost and uncertain, but it doesn’t take long for her strong spirit to recover and begin to make the best of a difficult situation. Silas is grateful to both Lydia and her mother for their help with his children, but he is also struggling with the changes this has brought to their home. Although they clash at times, Silas and Lydia both come to see the good qualities in each other and how they could make a good team. It was fun watching them clash and gradually find the happiness they both deserved. Mindy Steele has given us another compelling love story that was a joy to read.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

This heart-tugging Amish novel presents a tender tale of loss and struggles to survive—and in search of love and belonging. Lydia Miller and her widowed mother move into the dawdi haus on Silas Graber’s farm to care for his motherless children and run the house. This dramatically changes all their lives. The painful struggles continue but maybe there is a flicker of hope for healing . . . All the textual errors put me off, but the story was so endearing I kept reading, but it did make me wonder if they accidentally published the unedited copy. I received a copy from the author. All opinions are my own.

To CATCH A HUMMINGBIRD

The Way I see it, if anything had a word "hummingbird" in it has got to be
good! LOL! Actually I did enjoy reading this book, because it explored so many different feelings/phases in people's lives. Although there is never no way to forget and get over it , there is a way to work through life's difficulties and fill old things with new, and God is standing by. Great BOOK.

What a wonderful book. When Lydia Miller's mother sell the family home, without even asking how Lydia felt, they had to move in with widower Silas Graber. Lydia ends up taking care of his home and watching his children, whom she falls in love with, and could it be she was falling for Silas as well. Was this God's plan all along.. I was given an early copy for my honest review..

A good story, but too many errors

This is a good story but I found myself grading it down a star because of all the grammatical errors. As someone who has to proofread important documents for a living, I find there is no excuse for this in a published story.
