Tonya L. Matthews (Hudnall)
Tonya grew up on a family farm in Riverside, Kentucky. Her father recognized early on that hoeing tobacco and running hogs weren’t in her skill set. He opted to send her to college. Graduating from Western Kentucky University with honors, Tonya went on to support the business community for two decades as an executive for the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce where she served a primary role in the organization’s multiple national honors.

Ultimately, they signed up to be foster parents and adopted.
Tonya’s been married to Todd Matthews for 26 years. They have two grown daughters. Tonya Matthews has a way with her characters. We pull for them, ache with them, and rejoice with them. In the end, we are so thankful they find each other. We all need a friend like Roxie, and a God who is always working behind the scenes in such personal and intimate ways. Can't wait for the next in the series.

This is an emotional story. Be sure to have your tissues nearby as you reach the end. There is another kind of emotional experience earlier in the book as we read of events in a truly dysfunctional family. I found it was hard to read about, even the dialogue. Readers raised in a dysfunctional family may find some trigger situations. I also mixed up Caleb and Colton more than once and now see why Jerry Jenkins suggests never give two characters names starting with the same letter, let alone brothers.

Matthews has given readers a story that includes a homeless woman who had been terribly mistreated in her youth and a family with marital and sibling tension. There are several issues included in the narrative, such as parenting techniques, humanitarian service in a dangerous out of country location, and having a fictional friend.

This is the second novel in a series and though it did real rather well on its own, the full impact of the story would be better understood if Treasure Atop the Mountain is read first.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.

“Roxie Applesauce” by author Tonya L. Matthews is a contemporary Christian novel. This is the second novel in a series preceded by Treasure Atop a Mountain. It would help to follow the story better to read Book One first.

This is a story abundant in faith and inspiration. Characters are believable, lovable, yet flawed. Marcella is a homeless woman and has been physically and emotionally abused in the past. She meets Hayleya, mother of two teenagers. Hayleya’s husband, Thomas, is between jobs and struggling. She is overworked, overwhelmed, and exhausted.

I enjoyed the author’s style of writing. Her characters had many layers. They continued to grow throughout the book until I felt like they were my friends. I became invested in their lives and stories. The deep spiritual element is something I search for in Christian fiction. This book was overflowing with it.

It is exquisitely written. The storyline is well thought, planned, and written. It reveals how God takes our broken lives and turns them into something whole again. There are many timeless life and faith lessons in this book. It tackles a wide variety of topics including dysfunctional families, sibling rivalries, parenting techniques, marital issues, financial stress, humanitarianism, abuse, and having a fictional friend.

Emotions of the characters seeped into my heart, and I found myself crying in a few places. This is a book that you not only read but feel, too. Conversations sounded real and at times were a bit raw. This book has a lot of characters which made it difficult at times for me to follow. I just needed to slow down my reading even though I wanted to hurry and find out what would happen next.

I recommend this book. It has remained with me even though I finished it days ago. It would make a great book club or reading group choice. I rate it 4 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

This is the second book in a series. Book one really should be read before this one. It’s not one of those where it can easily be read as a stand-alone, but rather one that you need to read them in order for them to make the most sense.

There is so much going on in this novel. It has such hard things and some light-hearted moments but it really is going to make you think as you read it. You also might need tissues handy as it might make you cry a bit over and over.

Within the story, you have two major characters, Marcella and Haleya. Marcella has suffered through abuse both emotional and physical. Some of that could be triggering and hard to read.

I could identify more with Haleya being a stay at home mom to multiple kids. I, however, have several more than she did in the story.

This is going to be a trilogy so that is interesting. I’m looking forward to reading the last one.

I also want to comment on the author’s story. I enjoy it. We’re also adoptive parents and I love hearing stories of adoption from others as well.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

Roxie Applesauce by Tonya L. Matthews in the second book in this series. I had the honor to read the first Book, Treasure Atop the Mountain. The books are very much standalone books, but I would recommend reading the first book also.

Marcella Ciscal has had a rough life, which has included Addiction, Abuse and being homeless and alone. The only thing that gets her through her days is her imaginary friend, Roxie Applesauce and her faith in Jesus. Her life changes when she is beaten and wakes up to a caregiver who is an angel in disguise. Heyana Kage is a wonderful caregiver, although she is struggling in her own life. Her husband, Thomas Kage, has a struggling business and her two teenagers. Her daughter has become really rebellious. Even through all the struggles, Heyana remains a compassionate and kind caregiver. Marcella really has to come to know Heyana and wants to be an encouragement to Heyana during her struggles, even offering to help her daughter. Will Heyana be blessed by Marcella and her wisdom as an older woman? Will Marcella finally stop her cycle of Abuse, Addiction and Homelessness after her recent beating?

WOW, what a heartwarming, tearjerker story! I had to have my Kleenex next to my while reading this book. The cycle of life that Marcella went through was so heartbreaking. I was glad to see the friendship between Heyana and Marcella grow and flourish. The faith in Jesus that both ladies have is just wonderful. This is a book about healing, grace, redemption and friendship. I feel the theme of the book is "God's plan is greater then our plan". I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Fiction. FANTASTIC BOOK!

Roxie Applesauce is written by Tonya Matthews. I’ve recently been introduced to this author and I’ve loved both stories I’ve read. There is a book prior to this one, Treasure atop the mountain that I would recommend reading first, just so you can get the whole back story.

The author has written a very emotional story. You’ll want to have tissues close by. Marcella Ciscal is not treated well by some of the other characters. My heart broke for her. She’s endured physical and emotional abuse. Those scars run deep. I love that the author created a realistic character. She wrote some tough subjects but shows how God’s mercy prevails.

Haleya Kage is going through some difficulties of her own. Her children are moody and distant. Her husband seems so unhappy. Haleya is struggling. She’s exhausted too.

The two characters meeting and seeing what happens is truly magical. I love how God takes the brokenness of our lives and turns it into something beautiful. There’s so many realistic topics the author has written about and Gods love shows through all of it.

"Roxie Applesauce" by Tonya L. Matthews was a good book but so many times I wanted to jump into the book and treat some of the characters the way they treated Marcella Ciscal. I supposed a reader could enjoy this book as a standalone but I really encourage you to read "Treasure Atop The Mountain" first to get the background story. This was an emotional story but again I recommend it because it clearly shows that God works in mysterious ways. I really loved the ending and am eagerly awaiting the third book. Even through these books are fiction I really believe this story has happened before and unfortunately will happen again with a few changes. But the ending leaves your heart singing.

I remember reading the first book from this series and thinking how impressed I was with the writing. The story continues in this book with familiar characters. Even though you could probably read it as a stand alone, I would recommend reading the first one to see how the author develops her characters. This one is just as emotional as the first one but was a little hard for me to follow at first. There are quite a few characters which made it difficult.

Following Marcella’s story was difficult because of the cruelty she endured. The abuse is both emotional and physical. Even though she had physical scars, the emotional ones are the deepest and hurt the most. To think that you aren’t loved or wanted sends you to a place where darkness surrounds you. Marcella could be anyone out there right now struggling with addiction, homelessness or abuse. Through the author’s words we find a woman who is determined to survive even though at times it seems hopeless.

Haleya is finding life to be difficult with a husband who seems unhappy and two children who are moody and distant at times. Her life is complicated with her family spinning out of control. It was interesting to see how the author explores a family that seems dysfunctional but really at the heart of it is lack of communication. If only we could slow down , take a deep breath and see what God has given us we may understand how blessed we are. For Haleya I think her attitude changes when she goes back to being a nurse who cares for her patients. Isn’t it funny how one decision can change everything in our life.

The connection between two people in the story is emotional and heartbreaking at the same time. I love how the author brings Marcella to a place where hope and love is found. It is hard to explain how powerful the ending is. I broke down in tears because Marcella is someone that was broken but God was there to wipe her tears away and bring her peace.

I kept thinking of how to end my review but all I could come up with is , “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world does. Do not let your hearts be troubled and don’t be afraid.” John 14:27.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

I really enjoyed this authors writing style and characters. Made me feel like I was there with the descriptions. Not going to lie, some of it was difficult to read and I can see it triggering some people who have had similar experiences. But the author handled it well and realistically.

I really just liked how real the whole thing was, like this could be people I meet today. They could be going through these same things. The book was really good and it got me in my feelings. It is a good clean read that I could recommend to most any of my friends and I like that. I guess I should disclose that it will make you cry!

4/5

Saying that this is an emotional book is an understatement! Roxie Applesauce is a gut-wrenching, soul-searching story that gave me all the feels, and it's left me eager to read more books by Tonya Matthews. Yes, there may be trigger points for some readers, because Matthews tackles many sensitive topics. Marcella Ciscal's life has been a cycle of abuse, addiction, and being homeless, and she's found comfort and solace in her imaginary friend Roxie Applesauce, and in believing that Jesus loves her. And then, after a traumatic beating, Marcella becomes a patient of nurse Heyana Kage, and she finally learns about kindness and compassion. Heyana is a wonderful character but she certainly has her own problems. Her successful marriage is at risk, her daughter has become a rebellious teenager, and Heyana fears that her family life is spiraling out of control. Is it possible that this nurse and patient may be each other's saving grace? Can a sixty-something homeless person help a searching teenager find a new purpose?

There are several other characters who play key roles in this story, and I especially love that it is set in my home state of Kentucky. Roxie Applesauce is a heartbreaking and heartwarming book that I won't soon forget, and I highly recommend it. Just be sure to keep a box of tissues nearby!

I received a digital copy from Celebrate Lit. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

Roxie Applesauce
I love the book, and especially the characters. The book came to life for me and I felt like I was there in the middle of the story. As I read the book, it was hard to put down as I love the way the book was written and divided up about the characters and their story, it keep me on my toes to see what was going to happen next.
The author did an amazing job with details of the characters and location of the story. The more you read you started to feel you knew the characters and I could related to someone in my personal life.
Great job Tonya and can't wait for next book!

Roxie Applesauce is an emotional roller coaster! I laughed. I cried. It was intense and light hearted.

This is a real story following a homeless woman and how her life intersects with a typical family. Hayleya is tired and overworked. Thomas is in between jobs and struggling with self-esteem. They have two teen-aged children. Roxie is a story of how God picks up the pieces of our lives and sews them into a beautiful tapestry.

This is the second book in a trilogy. You don't have to read the first book, Treasure Atop the Mountain, to get the most out of Roxie. But if you've read Treasure, Roxie is a great addition to the Gracie's family.

Roxie Applesauce by Tonya L Matthews is the sequel to Treasures Atop The Mountain but can be read as a stand-alone. I enjoyed reading the books in order for character development and progression.
Roxie Applesauce is a contemporary Christian novel. It is about faith and a God who answers prayer. We are called to pray without ceasing. God will always answer us. Sometimes the answer comes just as we are on the verge of giving up. God will never forget us or our prayers.
The novel is a heartbreaking read as we follow a young girl through her life to the end. We drop in on her over the years. We see the power of the imagination to lift her beyond her circumstances. Raised by cruel grandparents, the reader’s heart just breaks. Every time something good happens to her, her grandparents squash it with unbelievable cruelty. Still, the character maintains her sunny disposition in childhood.
We see she bounces back from the continual knocks until one day, hurt is all she expects. “She wasn’t hallucinating… She hadn’t expected kindness.” Her ending is far nicer than her beginning.
The tale follows a family. We witness sibling rivalry, as well as support. Hearts are in the correct place.
Money can be used for good or ill. We should be wise stewards. “Touch someone’s life when they would never expect it.” We need to bless others as we have been blessed, and pay it forward.
We are not just a product of our past. “Don’t think that the past is all you’ve got – You write your future.” The future is calling us.
All the characters were wonderfully drawn. They were warm and welcoming.
Roxie Applesauce was an emotional read as we see faith in action, and the goodness of God.

Continuing on in the familial generation story of Gracie and Ben (Kade) from Treasure Atop the Mountain, we now get a peak into their children's lives. Now grown their three boys have definitely branched out on their own. All doing it without the love and support of their mother Gracie, who passed but her memory and life lessons are very much alive.

As we all know life deals blows that are not always easy to get through and sometimes near impossible. Roxie Applesauce takes a look at especially oldest son's Thomas and his life. He seems to be doing very well. Successful, happily married to Haleya, and two beautiful, healthy children. However, life is not really going to leave them unscathed either. This story takes place around and in 2009 and financial burdens hit them hard and test this family, along with friendships, and the usual teen rebellion. As this family navigates this stormy period of their life they can let it make them stronger or let it tear them apart.

And then there is Roxie Applesauce. She is an interesting character. I won't say too much about her, and let the reader experience her for themselves. However there is a homeless woman, Marcella, that we get to know through a period of flashbacks and her current life. Hers is a sad but meaningful story of mercy and grace no matter the life lived.

It was good to visit the Kage family again, though many years later, but their story continues.

I was provided a copy of this novel by the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

After I read the author's first book, Treasure Atop The Mountain, I was very anxious to read the sequel. I wanted to read how the characters I came to love in the first book, Kage and Gracie, continue to grow in their marriage, and what new adventures and relationships await their family in the years that follow. I was not disappointed! When Marcella was introduced, I wondered how she was going to end up melding with the family. It was beautiful, and heartbreaking at the same time, to get to know Marcella and see the pain she went through in her homelessness and repeated abuses. She represents so many real people, in real towns, with real needs. And I will definitely think of her as I serve in ministry for the homeless, and as I see these loved-by-God people holding up signs on street corners. Her creative invention of Roxie Applesauce saved both her life and her sanity. Roxie's life reflected Marcella's beautiful heart and gifted mind. As I was drawn in to Haleya and Thomas's family and their children and their issues and love for each other, I waited - somewhat impatiently - to see the thread that would weave Marcella into their lives. When she was beaten and entered the hospital, and met Haleya, and then her children, at a certain point I had the Aha! moment I had been waiting for, and it truly filled my heart with love for them, with a lot of emotion, and with gratefulness to God for His amazing ways to fulfill the plans He has for us all! Congratulations, Tonya, on another beautiful book!

In Roxie Applesauce, the author Tonya L. Matthews illustrates how God creates something beautiful from broken pieces. Both Marcella Ciscal and Haleya Kage experience God’s mercy and love when their paths intersect.

Suffering abuse from those around her, Marcella, homeless, wakes up beaten and alone. Haley’s Kage, taken for granted by her family, discovers Marcella, and God takes the seemingly random occurrence and uses it for His own divine plan.

I love how the author takes these two characters and those around them into a beautifully poignant story. While I initially thought I was going to find this book slow, I quickly lost myself in this story.

So if you enjoy touching and moving stories about how God creates beautiful tapestries from broken pieces, check out this book for yourself.

“Roxie Applesauce” by author Tonya L. Matthews is a contemporary Christian novel. This is the second novel in a series. The series definitely needs to be read in order.

This book took a long time to pull me in. It felt like there were too many story lines too early which kept me from diving in. The plot seemed to plod along. The characters were interesting and some have more depth than others. The author did an excellent job of conveying a character's traumatic past without being graphic or too detailed. During the last third of the book the story really picks up which saved the story for me.

I listened to this on audiobook and sped up the narration so that it was more like conversational speed. I enjoyed this narrator's voice. It suited the characters well.

Thank you to the author and Haleya Publishing for the opportunity to read the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was such a feel-good read/listen (audiobook)! God doesn't promise us an easy life, but He does promise to be with us through the hard times and He places special people in our lives to help us through it all. This emotional, moving story is not one you'll forget.

This was my first Tonya Matthews book but it won't be the last. The characters and their stories are both well-developed and will have you rooting for them and wanting more. This was a wonderful listen, I highly recommend putting it on your TBR list.

Thank you NetGalley for the audio copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

God has a plan!

The lives of so many entangled into one book! What a wonderful story it makes. My heart breaks, my heart smiles as I walk through life with these wonderful people. Wish I had read This book immediately after finishing Treasure atop the Mountain. Had I done that, I would have had less trouble keeping all the characters straight as to their connection to one another. But, that issue was probably my fault, not that of the author. In the end, it wraps up with enough joy to make me anxious for the next in this series. Write faster, Ms. Matthews😀

I am trying to catch up on a number of posts right now, and I get frustrated when I do this because when I don't post immediately after finishing the book, I don't share as much detail about the book. I apologize ahead of time because this book deserves all the praise! I loved it so much. I am going to buy the first one and I can't wait until the next one comes out! While this is part of a series, it can absolutely stand alone.

This book alternates between Marcella Ciscal's story and the Kage family. Marcella Ciscal had a terrible childhood, ran away at a young age, was abused, homeless and addicted to drugs throughout the years. When she is attacked in an abandoned home, she ends up in the hospital as a patient of nurse, Heleya Kage. Haleya's family has also faced some recent struggles: her husband lost his business, her marriage is not what it used to be, her teen daughter is rebelling a bit, and her dad is miles away on a mission field. Haleya and Marcella bond and both find hope and answered prayers.

Roxie Applesauce is exactly the type of book that I love. Truth-filled and honest, it reveals the often ugly path one needs to take to find redemption, but it is also beautifully steeped in hope. Just like real life: there is evil, struggle, and hardship, but with Jesus there is always hope.

I definitely need to go back and get the first book: Treasure Atop the Mountain and catch up on Grace's story (Haleya's mother-in-law).

What a great book! The author took her character’s hardships and blessings and wove them into a beautiful story that shows God has a plan for us all . Beautifully written using so many different characters and personalities that kept the story so interesting and ending with a realization that our struggles and joys are all part of His plan! After reading the authors first book Treasure atop the Mountain as well as this one makes me anxiously awaiting her next book!

“Roxie Applesauce” by Tonya L. Matthews is honest, faith-based, Christian fiction at its best. It is beautifully written, revealing how God, the Master Craftsman, takes the broken pieces of human lives and skillfully shapes them into vessels fit for His use. Tonya L. Matthews has done a great job in writing this revealing book. It is highly imaginative, extremely compelling to read and captures the reader’s attention from start to finish.

Heart warming (& heart wrenching at times!) story of how huge God’s love & grace is! Read Treasure on the Mountain too as some characters in that story are carried over into this one!
