I don’t like this book. I find it bad because it Insults marginalized races and calls white people spoiled. There are stereotypes assuming that white people are all priviledged 10th generation Americans, and they forget that there are many, many white immigrants that often get bullied too.
the part where they say “Madison is never the only white girl in her class, and (the black girl) is often the only black girl in her class” also does not apply to all schools. Many, many schools out there are black dominant, and not just all white dominant.
the part where it also talks about how Madison sees people that look like her in books, magazines, etc BECAUSE SHE IS WHITE is more complicated than the description that was given. One of any race could have vitiligo, heterochromia, or a face syndrome, and they don’t see others often that look like them.
HOWEVER, this book did contain some facts, like common black discrimination, so I won’t rate it extremely low.

A Smart Girl's Guide: Race & Inclusion is a wonderful resource for girls (and everyone else) to stand up against racism in the world around them. The book itself is geared toward older elementary and middle school age girls. The text comes in small easily readable sections and accompanied by a lot of beautiful and diverse illustrations. The book provides definitions and examples for topics like race, white privilege, systemic racism, bigotry, etc. The examples are mostly things that a child might see in school or with friends which makes the topics accessible to children. In addition to information there are action items that the reader can take and even a worksheet to make an anti-racism plan. The author, illustrator, and advisors are all women of color and very qualified to be providing the information in this book.

Wow. This was so well-written. There's lots of detail and explaining but it's presented in a good order that's easy to understand. Some things are repetitive, but that's not bad, because the book being effective relies on repetitive behaviors. Honestly, even good for adults to read. We have a lot of work to do.

Quick read I randomly picked up at the library. I liked the book recommendations and practical suggestions, but mostly not too much new information. Probably good for the target age group. Also one of those books that may be controversial depending on one’s political affiliation.
