When P.I. Burnside is lured into a scheme involving a star football player he had once recruited out of high school, he tries to turn the tables on the perpetrator. But when shots are fired on a darkened L.A. street, he is plunged into a mystifying case where nothing is as it seems – where even murder could be an illusion.
The story leads Burnside into the world of startup companies, and the money-hungry people who run them. By pushing his way through a riveting set of clues, he finds a twisted trail of age-old grievances and shocking betrayals. And it wouldn’t be a Burnside mystery if he didn’t manage to also upstage the police, as his investigation is always a step ahead of theirs, creating yet another thorny path for him to navigate.
As Burnside races to tie the details together before any more carnage is done, he also gains further insight into his own sketchy history and begins to grasp how his checkered past has led him to where he is now – for better and for worse. His remarkable journey parallels the story and creates depth and texture to one of modern crime fiction’s most irreverent heroes.
Jet Sweep is the latest installment of this classic Southern California noir mystery series. With razor-sharp dialogue and sardonic humor, this well-honed thriller is set against a backdrop of an increasingly hot Los Angeles summer. It is a story that comes loaded with high drama, as well as some unexpected surprises!

Burnside, our protagonist, is an ex football coach and ex cop who got drummed out of the force unjustly. Now he is a P.I. with anger issues. I like stories that are linear. They follow one guy and you get to ride along with him as he goes through his life in pursuit of his goal, which in this case is to solve a mystery that only becomes more mysterious with every clue uncovered. Everybody involved seems so interesting and authentic I was just fascinated by it all.
He gets involved with one of those scooter companies and what ensues is a series of events that include backstabbing (figuratively), sibling rivalry on a massive scale, beatings shootings, murder most foul, and gelato. And like the gelato, this book is delicious time well spent.
I always enjoy reading a Burnside book. As the wife who sits through watching football games with her husband, it is fun having the plays described in the book. The book left me expecting more. Anxiously awaiting the next Burnside book which, hopefully will give more insight into Burnside ‘s motivations. Read it, you will enjoy the twist.
Ehhh.... This wasn't a great book and it wasn't a bad book. It was an OK read. The one thing I greatly disliked was the author constantly plugging Starbucks. Don't get me wrong, I think Starbucks is OK but i don't want to read a book that is a constant advertisement for the franchise.
Always interesting of how the title comes from and pertains to the plot within. Cody when he played in the Rose Bowl had a long run and he called it Jet Sweep. From football earnings, and friends he has a start up business. Out of curiosity Burnside take an unusual case, making calls for more information, since things didn’t seem right. Nor did the actual event go as he was told when shots were fired. A sister Of Cody, who drove her car down an embankment. Burnside is hired and finds a plot that brings his wife Gail into it, someone who wanted revenge for what she did to him. Interesting of the memories of guys and the plays along way as he unraveled what going on Burnside has faults, now as a family man he realizes them more. Wanting to be the man and father for Marcus his son. The pages fly as one is caught of figuring out the why. Well done, and a great series.
This is not the first PI Burnside book that I have read but, again, the major complaint it that there is so much material that is of interest only to those who watch American-style football. I can understand why some parts of his background have to be repeated - this might be someone's first meeting with him - bit a lot of the other material could have been omitted without detracting from the story. In this case, I also have to say that this was the most "way-out" story-line. I didn't find it at all convincing!
A start up company run by three NFL friends and team mates. A crime that doesn't make sense. A straight PI with loving wife and son dragged into the mix. A mix of vengeance, jealousy and resentment comes to a head in an unexpected way. Hard to put down, and a really good read! First time reading this author, looking forward to other yarns starring Burnside.
I really enjoy the Burnside series. The mysteries are good, the plot moves along with plenty of action, but also some underlying motivation that gives depth. Jet Sweep is no exception, with a plot that twists and turns and an unexpected solution. In addition each of the books titles are a play in football, which is explained usually at the end of the book, and as part of the story. This has increased my knowledge and interest in the game as well. All in all a most satisfying read!
The Burnside series is as good as any series that I have read. I usually stop whatever else that I am reading as soon as a new book comes out. The stories - especially his personal and family interactions - are very impactful and realistic. David Chill in an outstanding author.
Burnside has anger issues which get him into trouble sometimes, but the therapy could help if people would stop winding him up. Anyway he finds out the plan and solves the case in his own inimitable way saving the intended victim from his vindictive sister and exposing the crooked murdering cop. Good story plot, setting and characters.
I love Burnside, Gail and Marcus. The cast of characters crafted by David Chill is quirky and engaging. Although not a big fan of football, I find the backdrop of the sport fascinating. I eagerly await the next book.
Always a page turner. Every one of David Chill's books tells a great story and I love the relationship Burnside has with his wife and son. Can't wait for the next book!
This book moved me on a very personal level, mirroring my own regarding parental separation at a very young age. I enjoyed it immensely. A real page turner.
This is the second Burnside book I have read, and I love this series. Great characters, especially Burnside, ex-football player and coach, ex-cop, and now a private investigator. This book has good characters, a good plot, and a great ending. Can't wait to read all of this series.
The plot point about Kristy’s background bothers me. There’s an inaccuracy, for one. And a negative take on a topic close to my heart. The author asked me to alter my review and take out my concern since it might spoil the plot for others.
Burnside had a nice little spiel about local coffee shops being edged out by Starbucks. Yet that is all he drinks. It seems like a contradiction.
I had a difficult time rooting for anyone in this story.
