I was born in the beautiful county of Cornwall in southwestern England and grew up in a small village there. I return frequently to visit family and friends but especially to savor the cool rainy weather and hot tea. After school I joined the Royal Navy and served for nearly six years. I held varying jobs from being the only woman in the staff of a sports center to arranging social engagements for the Captain of the base. My last assignment was to Denmark where I thought I would spend a wild two years in Copenhagen only to discover I was being sent to a NATO Headquarters in a quiet town on the Jutland Peninsula. I was only disappointed for a while as I met my own tall, dark, handsome stranger there - a US Naval Officer named Richard who became my husband.
That was the beginning of an itinerant life as from Denmark we went to Sicily where we had our first son. Then it was on to Monterey, California and the birth of our second son. From there we headed to Patuxent River, Maryland where we had our third son. Richard's last assignment was to London where we spent a wonderful three years. Retiring from the Navy he took a job in Brentwood, Tennessee near where he grew up. Now he's retired for the 2nd time and I'm still writing!
I have always been a voracious reader, even at 5 years old my school reports show a keen interest in English and very little in math - some things never change! Although I enjoyed writing in school it wasn't until 2001 that I was tempted to take a creative writing class at a local recreation center which has sparked my new career.
I hope you enjoy reading my work as much as I enjoy writing it so sit back, make yourself a cup of tea and enjoy a break from everyday life.
I received a copy of this via NetGalley and Choc-Lit in return for a fair and honest review.
I was also on the tasting panel of Choc-Lit so read this at the manuscript stage
This was one of those books that makes you smile almost immediately as you instantly connect with the main characters and their situations, and just know that you are going to be in for a fun ride - and a coach ride across Europe in this books' case!
Sarah is a nursery school teacher from Cornwall, and has recently moved back in with her mother after her marriage to Tim broke down when he ran off with her supposed best friend! Sarah and Betty have a great mother/daughter relationship and are thrilled to find out that they've won a free holiday in a competition they entered, and opt for a coach holiday visiting 7 European countries in 10 days. The perfect way to escape her ex and just to get away from it all!
Matt is an American introvert! His life revolves around work so he has very little time for fun or relationships! And he's beginning to regret offering to take his mother away after he promised her a trip for her retirement. She chooses a coach holiday to see the sights and sounds of Europe and Matt is dreading it! Fearing 10 days cooped up on a coach with a lot of old women, and no Wi-Fi to keep him in touch with work at a crucial time! A recipe for disaster in his mind!
Sparks fly as soon as Sarah and Matt meet on the trip and when Sarah comes up with the idea of posting photos of them as a fake couple on Facebook to show her ex that she has moved on, it leads to some extremely fun banter and flirting between Sarah and Matt - their personalities seem to compliment each other and it is so sweet seeing how their relationship progresses as the journey continues. There are plenty of awkward moments for them both too as the days go on, and they both seem to want more to happen but are both afraid to let it!!
Really enjoyed reading this fun story and loved the aspect of their mums' and their reaction and involvement to their 'fake holiday romance'! A great way to escape on holiday from the comfort of your own home, with the loveliest characters!
Yesterday I enjoyed a nice afternoon in the indian summer sun and this lovely and funny story added some extra sunshine. Of course it was clear from the beginning how it was going to end, but that did not take away any of the pleasure. It was fluently written, put a smile on my face and kept my attention the whole time. If you are looking for a few hours of fun, this is a book I would recommend.
I enjoyed the plot, the set up drew me in however, I felt like the storyline was very repetitive and not much really happened. It could have been developed by having more creativity and less whining from the characters.
This was a fun, easy and quick read that gave me a bit of a break from the mundane today. Sarah and her mother end up on the same coach tour of Europe that Matt and his mother travel from the USA to join. Their motives might have been suspect when they started their “relationship” but things change as the days go by. Whether or not they will end up with a happily ever after depends on what they are both willing to invest in and whether or not a long distance relationship will work for them or not.
Thank you to Net Galley and ChocLit for the copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Thanks again Choclit and Netgalley. Another corker xx This was an enjoyable read with likeable characters. It was an easy read too which I read in an evening. The story flowed well, it was lighthearted and fun. I enjoyed the different locations and kept expecting Brendan from the TV show "Coach Trip" to emerge at any second. If you fancy a little "get away from it all" read, this is your book.
This book was a time killer. It's a short read and entirely captivating. From the start it was so clear how it's going to end, but still through each page I felt myself walking side by side with the characters. It can be read by anyone because of the simple language. Believe it or not I read the book for five hours straight without any distraction. I lived through each sentence. Sometimes the words might be too simple which fails to make you feel the emotion of the particular plot. But if you loved the characters and got hold of their traits and if you reread the same line again and again remembering all the information you gained through the story, it will make you emotional a little.
Some might feel this story as too simple and not that good. Because you can predict each and everything before you read it. The story is so obvious from the start. But if you've never been to any of the countries mentioned in the story, you'll not regret reading it. You'll get a bit of information about the places atleast. I'm not sure but you might love the character's humour sense like I did. This story might not be the best but you'll not regret reading it.
I will definitely recommend this one to read. I know that I'll go through the story again to virtually visit the places mentioned in the story.
Leuke, snelle verhaallijn.
Can I please ask why these books are all the same? The Nashville Men are the same type with the same issues and the women are the same too? Pure curiosity 🙏
Tijdens haar dienst in Denemarken leerde ze haar man, een US Naval officer, kennen.
You’re The One That I Want is a lighthearted, slightly quirky bit of fun that hits the spot for curling up on the couch and simply escaping on a whirlwind tour of Europe with two very unlikely paired people.
Sarah has recently gone through one of every married (or not) woman’s nightmare… discovering that her husband has cheated with her best friend (make that former best friend) and has quite frankly dumped her for a newer model. He and the former best friend are expecting a child and have married, which leaves Sarah with the understandable anger and resentment toward them both. They’ve stolen her dream. But isn’t it said that revenge is a dish best served cold? When Sarah and her mother win a destination prize it seems that the fates have handed her the solution to her need to show her ex-husband that she has move on with her life. Sorta. Maybe.
Matt is the absolute definition of a workaholic. A self made success, he’s a bit of a geek in a very attractive package. He’s agreed to go with his mother on a coach tour of some of the highlights of Europe. It was his retirement gift to her and now he’s stuck on a tour completely shut off from work. Matt is not necessarily a happy camper, but for his mom he’ll do anything.
As much as these two love their mothers, it was a pleasant surprise to discover someone else close to their own age on the tour. It doesn’t take long for Sarah to come up with her perfect plan to show the two people who’d hurt her the most that she was moving on just fine. A brand new, sexy relationship was exactly what was needed. So what if it was far from true, they’d never know that. As she convinced Matt to enter into a fake romance complete with selfies and Facebook posts neither one ever expected it to turn into something more. Now the question becomes how can these two make a long distance real relationship work. Two different countries, far apart for long periods of time – can they make the real life work as well as the fake romance… only time will tell.
I loved Matt and his very dry sense of humor. Sarah on the other hand, not so much. For some reason I couldn’t connect as well with her. Perhaps it was the way she often spoke to Matt. This entire scheme was for her benefit, Matt was going along with it yet I felt his connection more than Sarah’s. It happens sometimes, but it certainly did not take away from my enjoyment of the story.
If you’re looking for something light to read, take an armchair whirlwind tour of Europe with Matt and Sarah. I’m certain you’ll enjoy the journey. I would definitely recommend this for any Romance reader.
*I received an e-ARC of You’re The One That I Want from the publisher, Choc Lit and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*
He is a computer geek from Nashville. She is a primary school teacher from Cornwall.
He struggles to communicate with people, and a coach trip across Europe is not his idea of a good time. She is struggling to come to terms with an ex-husband, and is delighted to be on this coach trip.
One whistle-stop coach trip across Europe, one agreement between two single people to give false impressions to their loved ones, two meddlesome mothers and a chirpy tour guide on a coach, gives the main ingredients to the wonderful romantic novella You're The One That I Want.
Even if I had been given this book blindfolded with no clue, with the wonderful mix of Nashville gentleman, with his Southern drawl, and a girl from Cornwall, it would have been easy to guess this is another of Angela Britnell's gems.
This is the fourth book in her Nashville Connections series, and each one can easily be read as a standalone, as Nashville is just a theme that connects each book, rather than it being a series that continues on from each other.
I will admit my first reaction on seeing the title of this book has been to have the iconic Grease song running through my head, pretty much throughout the story as I was reading it. And it seemed quite apt as even while Sarah and Matt are trying to fool people they are just friends, its obvious that there is a clear chemistry between them, even if they are from completely different worlds.
The coach trip itself gave quick tourist insights into each of the stops, and although I do like visiting lots of countries in a short space of time I would always take a cruise ship, over a coach personally! This book definitely backs up that opinion of mine, as there is a lot of sitting about on coaches unsurprisingly in a big tour group, with plenty of organised trips, that rarely give enough time to get a real feel for a place. This though is to be expected when going to 7 countries in 10 days.
You're The One That I Want was a treat to read, a book that I thoroughly enjoyed, by an author that I am really loving ever book I read of hers.
Thanks so much to Choc Lit and Netgalley for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.
For a choc lit, this book was extremely fattening. I could get used to this. I'm quite fond of books which give us an insight into the events from the perspectives of both the main characters (as I said this is a choc lit). Only too often though, I find that, we don't gain any valuable insights: just repetition of thoughts and feelings. But, Britnell executed this skill very well: we learn of the characters' feelings, background, current problems, reactions to one another. A full story, complete. All ends tied up.
The story follows the lives of Matt, a computer nerd and genius. A successful workaholic, with no time besides work. Oh, and his mother- who actually happens to be the reason he agrees to a ten day European tour. Then we have Sarah, a teacher in Cornwall, she also happens to be on the tour for her mother. Only difference is she comes with a lot of baggage. Two ships passing by, destined to meet. Sarah asks Matt for a favour, a huge deal, will he sign up?
While her 'baggage' certainly was cliché: husband having affair with best friend, which obviously reduced my sympathies, it was no great downfall. I really enjoyed this book, it made me lose track of time more than once. It was a good thing I started reading it during my week break.
This book is easily a wonderful read, primarily, because of the easy going, witty, smooth dialogue between the couple at the heart of the tale. There was a natural chemistry illustrated through Britnell's vocabulary. The mix of good humour and intelligence (I'm done with naive characters) created a wonderfully solid book I didn't even know I needed.
Only thing I'd have liked was to not have it end where it did. The decision made at the end was a difficult one, stressful, I'd have liked to have seen how they 'work it out'. In terms of living arrangements, different lifestyles.....
I have to say, fans of Rich Amooi's romantic comedies would adore this book. It may not be as hilarious, but there's a considerable level of wittiness. I can only hope I find more books like this one.
A gorgeous little story, perfect for a cozy evening in, You’re the One That I Want is a lovely addition to the Nashville Connections series that will leave you with that feel-good vibe.
A shorter read, but no less impactful than a full-length novel, Angela Britnell creates a beautiful relationship between Matt and Sarah as they find themselves on the same coach trip on a tour around Europe with their mothers. The only two people under the age of 50, Matt and Sarah quickly get to know each other, but it’s safe to say that neither give the best first impression.
Britnell timed this story to perfection. Despite the short length, I believed the pace of the book, and could feel the claustrophobia that was getting to Matt from the hours on a coach away from his work, and how him and Sarah connected over the little snippets of information they gained of the other in the hours they had to spend together. Sarah’s annoyance at Matt’s attitude greatly echoed the annoyance she felt at herself for how childishly she was using Matt to make her ex-husband jealous.
You’ll love Matt and Sarah from the get-go, and will root for them to make it, through meddling mothers, nosy tour-guides and a distance of Cornwall to Nashville.
The only thing I hoped for was a little more closure. I had that moment of turning the last page, thinking another chapter could have seen Matt and Sarah talk through the problems of long-distance relationships and discuss a final solution to give the characters and readers some closure. Fingers crossed we’ll see a snippet of these great characters in future Nashville Connections stories to see how they fare!
4 Stars!
*Review copy kindly provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review*
I received this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. This is my first read by author Angela Britnell and at the end I found myself one-clicking several of her other novels. This is a quick paced, light-hearted read that I finished within a few hours. It grabbed a hold of me with the story line. Plan to meet a man, ask him to be her fake boyfriend, and post them on Facebook to make people believe that she has moved on from the past. Sarah is a quiet teacher from Cornwall. Her husband left her for her childhood best friend. Winning a trip around Europe couldn’t have come at a better time, now that her best friend is pregnant and marrying her ex-husband. She make a plan, yet what she wasn’t planning on was the fake boyfriend having qualities that she would like in real life.
Matt is a self-made business man from Nashville. He writes technical manuals for end users. He is all work and no play kind of guy. But when his Mom retires from teaching he concedes and takes her on a Coach Tour of Europe, 10 countries and 7 days. When propositioned by Sarah with this crazy plan, he feels something he has never felt before and decides to help out. Yet is his dry sense of humor and straightforward way of life something Sarah will be able to handle. Will they make it through the trip without killing one another? Will they become friends? Will they become more? Find out in the addictive novel You’re the one I want by author Angel Britnell.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book gave me such wanderlust. I have been wanting to take another trip to London and while I was hearing about all of these places in Europe all I wanted to do was book a flight.
The reason that I gave this book 3 stars was mainly because of the main character, Sarah. I just feel as though she is a bit much. She is so harsh and downright ruse to Matt at times when he is actually the one doing her a favour, She has such mood swings which are never really explained so I got very frustrated with her. She does not allow for explanations which also gets to me! Everything seems to be about her which is quite selfish.
Due to the fact that the Europe tour was not very long this book was very fast moving which made sense in the context of the book. I also loved Matt as I found he was actually very patient considering what Sarah put him through.
This book was very descriptive and I could easily imagine everything even though I have not been to all of the places mentioned.
Sarah and Matt accompany their mothers on a whirlwind, 7 countries in 10 day coach tour. They soon discover that they have more than their age in common. While they fake a romance, their mutual attraction blossoms into something more substantial as they visit the famous landmarks of Europe. So what if they live on different sides of the world?
This is a fun, gentle, clean romance between two people who are made for each other. Although the actual holiday sounded exhausting to me, the interesting locations kept my interest. The pace was brisk and always moving forward and at each location they grew closer. It was great when their witty dialogue and romantic moments played out in places I had actually visited myself. The best line was from Matt which went something like, ‘its like having a love affair in a fish bowl’ I knew exactly what he meant, but you will have to read the book to find out for yourself.
I received a free ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.
This is a light, and quick read. It's a charming story of two people that meet in the most unlikely of places. Sarah is a woman who was scorned by her husband and betrayed by her best friend. Matt is a man who is too busy with work to enjoy life.
When they accompany their mothers on a tour through Europe they decide to pretend to be a couple. Each has their own reasons for doing so. Sarah wants to show off to her ex-husband that he hasn't destroyed her when he left. Matt needs to get his mother off his back.
There are fun incidents along the way and great descriptions of some famous landmarks. Along the way they each decide that despite their reason for the charade, they actually enjoy each other's company. However, will they be able to go back to their lives when the tour is over or will one of them be willing to leave it all behind for the other?
