Prieš dvidešimt metų keturios geriausios draugės susitarė niekada nesusilaukti vaikų. Pasiryžusios pasipriešinti tradicijoms, jos siekė išsikovoti teisę pačios rinktis savąją ateitį. Ir nors laikui bėgant merginos nutolo, Šeila iki pat šių dienų ištikimai laikosi priesaikos. Bevaikė, netekėjusi, nuolat užmezganti beprasmius santykius su gerokai jaunesniais vyrais, ji tyliai plaukia per kartėlio kupiną gyvenimą. Iki ją pasiekia žinia apie Dinos mirtį.

Šeilą užlieja prisiminimai ir ji ima nerimauti, kad nusikaltimas gali būti susijęs su kadaise merginų duotu pažadu. Tačiau kas po tiek metų galėtų linkėti joms mirties? Ar Šeilai irgi gresia pavojus?

Sprendimas neturėti vaikų – drąsus. Jis, tikiu, ne tik reikalauja tam tikro tvirtumo, bet ir kviečia į gyvenimą begalę nereikalingų klausimų, tarsi leisdamas aplinkiniams kišti nosį ten, kur iš tiesų nėra jų vieta. Rodos, kad jie turi teisę žinoti kas, kaip ir kodėl, o dar ir bandyti priversti tave apsigalvoti. Arba, kaip dažniausiai ir būna, priekaištauti. Ir visgi, šis sprendimas dažnai atrodo gerokai sąmoningesnis nei sprendimas susilaukti vaikų.
„Kitokių“ puslapiuose įsigėrusi našta, kurią tokį pasirinkimą priėmusios moterys turi nešti, aidi aplinkinių priekaištai, klausimai ir nusistebėjimai, o kartu ir kaltinimai, nes „kokia gi tu moteris“. Autorė skausmingai, bet be galo originaliai narplioja šią temą pasitelkdama biblinius motyvus – pasakodama apie bevaikes Toros moteris, įpindama labai daug puikaus simbolizmo, kurį su didžiausiu malonumu gėriau į save ir norėjau daugiau. Ji labai subtiliai, sugebėdama net pasitelkti humorą, kuria unikalią atmosferą į ją įpindama dar ir trilerio elementų, tačiau užvertus paskutinį knygos puslapį atrodo, kad galbūt buvo pasirinkta per daug ambicinga užduotis.
S. Blau akivaizdžiai turi stipriąją sritį – ji puikiai išmano Torą ir įvairius religinius motyvus. Būtent todėl jos vaizduojama keturių moterų draugystė man ir tapo stipriausia kūrinio dalimi. Deja, atskleista apie tą draugystę buvo palyginus nedaug, nors visa ritualinė atmosfera, universiteto laikai ir mistinės aplinkybės, man kiek priminusios D. Tartt „Slaptą istoriją“, be galo žadino smalsumą ir būčiau apie tai mielai suskaičius dar kokį 100 psl. Tačiau autorė pasirinko kitą kelią – daugiau telktis į veikėjų dabartį, o ne praeitį, ir čia tam tikri dalykai kišo koją. Nusikaltimai, net jei ir per daug nestebinę, kaip ir jų atomazga, nekliuvo – įtampa nepaliko viso kūrinio metu, o autorė vis mėtė kaltę nuo vieno veikėjo prie kito. Tikri trilerių mylėtojai šitą galvosūkį išsiaiškins nesunkiai, tačiau čia visai smagu pamatyti, kaip jis narpliojamas.
Kita, mano galva silpniausia knygos dalis – meilės linija. Autorė, kuri taip įžvalgiai kalba apie moterų pasirinkimą netapti motinomis, tuo pat metu visiškai nuvalkiotai, jau girdėtai, matytai ir net gana neįprastai naiviai leidžia savo pagrindinei veikėjai kvailai įsimylėti, o skaitant apie tai norisi šiek tiek vartyti akis. Tai užima nereikalingai daug ir taip plonos knygos eterio ir verčia abejoti pagrindinės veikėjos sprendimų tvirtumu. Kūrinio atomazga pasirodė per greita – norėjosi turėti daugiau atsakymų, pakapstyti giliau, rasti paaiškinimų, o autorė, rodos, nuėjo lengviausiu keliu, tarsi nušluodama viską, ką iki tol taip kruopščiai statė.
Kūrinį rekomenduoju daugiausia dėl be galo įdomių apmąstymų ir visuomenės pjūvio (kurio norėjosi daugiau), kartais visai netikėtai išlendančio netgi kiek Bridžitą Džouns primenančio sąmojo ir panardinimo į visai kitokią kultūrą, kurią trileriuose sutiksi retai. Visgi stiprus autorės sumanymas, tikiu, galėjo būti išpildytas dar stipriau ir įtaigiau. Tačiau smalsumo vedama tikrai skaityčiau kitas jos knygas.

Kūrinį rekomenduoju daugiausia dėl be galo įdomių apmąstymų ir visuomenės pjūvio (kurio norėjosi daugiau), kartais visai netikėtai išlendančio netgi kiek Bridžitą Džouns primenančio sąmojo ir panardinimo į visai kitokią kultūrą, kurią trileriuose sutiksi retai. Visgi stiprus autorės sumanymas, tikiu, galėjo būti išpildytas dar stipriau ir įtaigiau. Tačiau smalsumo vedama tikrai skaityčiau kitas jos knygas.

A literary novel that wants to deconstruct horror/thriller tropes within a feminist framework whilst providing a disquisition on the interrelationship between orthodox religion and the strictures placed on women by the concept of the maternal archetype. A novel bizarrely packaged and promoted by Blau’s publishers as an out-and-out serial killer opus. A novel that plays in the genre sandbox but doesn’t understand how those genres work, particularly with regard to pace, structure, red herrings, big revelations and dramatic denouements. A novel that struggles as a cerebral literary work because it sacrifices naturalistic dialogue and organic character development for the sake of making each character (and there’s not one single sympathetic character in the entire novel) a mouthpiece for a very restricted argument/mindset/point of view. The result is a hectoring tone, an often hysterical use of italics and repetition, and a doormat of a heroine. ‘The Others’ had the potential to do something different, interesting and challenging. The way in which it wastes its potential is criminal.

Nacionalinis Izaraelio bestseleris iškart patraukė mano akį. Kaip visad - tobulas Baltų lankų viršelis, o ir moterystės, feminizmo bei motinystės temos yra tos, kurios visad sudomina. Na, ir visa tai dar apsupta žydiškos kultūros - kas gali būti įdomiau?
Pasakojama apie keturias studijų laikų drauges, kurios duoda įžadus prieš viena kitą neturėti vaikų ir realizuoti save. Į pažadą visos žiūri rimtai ir jo laikosi. Ypač rimtai nusiteikusi Šeila. Dabar, praėjus 20 metų, Šeila vis dar vieniša, neturi vaikų ir išgirsta apie vienos iš ketveriukės nužudymą. Velionė - profesorė, nagrinėjusi moterų emancipacijos klausimus. Nužudymas itin brutalus: rankose priklijuota lėlė, imituojanti kūdikį, o ant kaktos užrašas "motina". Šeila šokiruota ir kartu nori išsiaiškinti, kas žudikas.
Įspūdžiai - skaitosi smagiai. Autorė sugeba vedžioti skaitytoją už nosies. Jau, rodos, kaip ir viskas aišku, o tada, bam, ir vėl nebeaišku niekas. Nuo pirmų puslapių pajutau simpatiją pagrindinei herojai. Ypač patiko jos vidiniai monologai, proto aštrumas, ir humoro jausmas.
Knygoje gausu judaizmo simbolių. Pritrūko išnašų, paaiškinančių, kas yra kas. Jei nesate itin gerai susipažinę su judaizmu, tikrai galite justi žinių stygių. Kalbant apie feminizmą bei motinystę, pritrūko analizės, pamąstymų. Pasirodė, kad prabėgta gana paviršutiniškai.
Kūrinys kalba apie visuomenės spaudimą, kuriam dažnai priešinamės, bet kartais atsitinka taip, kad tai, kam labiausiai bandai atsispirti, galiausiai tave labiausiai vilioja. Šiuo atveju didžiulis pasipriešinimas tapti motina, tampa tuo akmeniu po kaklu, nes supranti, kad nori turėti vaikų, kad tavo norai ir nuomonė pasikeitė. Manau, svarbu suprasti, kad gyvenimas nestovi vietoje ir visiškai natūralu persigalvoti net ir esminiais klausimais. Kategoriškumas - ne tai, kas turėtų būti vertybė.
Negaliu sakyti, kad tai stipriausias mano skaitytas kūrinys. Vis tik pasakojimo maniera turi savo cinkelio ir visai maloniais suskaičiau. Nereiktų tikėtis itin stipraus feministinio kūrinio arba kažkokios stiprios analizės minėtomis temomis, bet kaip pramoginis kūrinys "sueis" visai smagiai.

Nu, kažkoks balamūtas su šita knyga. Tikėjau rimto psichologinio romano, o gavau detektyvą. Tai kas čia kaltas (kaip detektyve)? Įdomu, kaip kitiems skaitytojams pasirodė, einu paskaitynėti.

Perskaičiau greitai, buvo įdomu, įtampa ir viskas kaip priklauso. Tik aprašymas, kad tai ,,aštri socialinė kritika, pastanga garsiai išsakyti ne vieną moterį slegiančią baimę.." stiprokai perspaustas mano supratimu, nes tai geras detektyvas, bet ne daugiau, ir socialinės problemos gvildenamos ne daugiau, kiek tai įmanoma detektyve, juk taip dažnai knygose žudikas nusitaiko į kokią nors grupę, pvz neištikimosios, metusieji šeimas, homoseksualai, tam tikra rasė ir pan. Taip, čia tema- moters apsisprendimas neturėti vaikų- tikrai paliesta, tačiau knygos esmė visgi nusikaltimas ir jo narpliojimas.
Įdomus rašymo stilius, kai dalis minties išsakyta garsiai, o dalis lieka tik galvoje. Skiriasi kultūrinis fonas, vardai, buvo ir vienas kitas nepažįstamas žodis. Mįslę atspėjau gerokai iki finalo, bet tai nesumenkino smagumo.

The novel opens with detective, Micha Yarden, turning up at the door of forty-one-year-old Sheila Heller in Tel Aviv regarding the bizarrely staged murder of one of her university contemporaries and former close friends. The victim, Dina Kaminer, was a polemical feminist theorist who achieved notoriety for an essay on childless women in the Bible and having neither married or had children had become a leading advocate for this “controversial movement.” Found hog-tied to a chair with the word “mother” carved into her forehead and a baby doll glued to her hands, the message for Sheila seems starkly clear with someone having made a mother out of Dina in the end. As students Sheila, Dina and two other women, Ronit and Naama, made a pact to remain childless following a Purim party where all four went dressed as childless women from the Bible (Miriam the Prophetess, Lilith, Michal the wife of King David and the Witch of Endor).
The book is narrated in the first-person by Sheila and her reliability is doubtful throughout as she flirts with detective Micha, battles low self-esteem and seethes with jealousy at her former friends successes, most particularly about Dina having stolen her original idea about childless women in the Bible. Whilst Sheila is less academically successful than Dina and now working at the Bible museum, Ronit became an actress and Naama tragically committed suicide early on in the years after they all graduated. Given Sheila is either a prime suspect or needs to watch her back I found her very inconsistently characterised and impossible to understand. I was never sure how firmly on board with the pact to remain childless, despite the friendship group having disintegrated, she remained and how much of a part in her thinking over the years it had played. I would also have appreciated learning the rationale behind the pact and although the novel threatens a discussion about the choice to remain childless it fails to transpires. An uptick in pace roused my enthusiasm into the close but in the main I found it a slog to wade through the backstory and Sheila’s whiny narrative before the next update in the investigation by which time the delay has impeded the build-up of any meaningful suspense.
Set in contemporary Israel and translated from the Hebrew, the book makes frequent references to Judaism and attitudes in Israel to different denominations (Haredi, modern Orthodox). I did wonder if maybe I just didn’t know enough about the country and culture to appreciate these distinctions and why the idea that someone would remain childless was such a big deal. The novel seemed so busy trying (and failing) to shoehorn in feminist theory and a message about remaining childless that Sarah Blau seemed to forget about the thriller component. The result is a poorly executed novel and a plot that, on scratching the surface, lacks any depth with a central protagonist that I could never believe in and dialogue that is so overwritten it feels scripted.

Lengvai nuspėjamas ir suryjamas, bet tuo pačiu autentiškas, ne gi ne kiekviename zefyre rasi Toros simbolių, vardų ir žydiškų apeigų, nusistatymų ir radikalumo.
“Kitokių” autorė - užkietėjusi feministė, scenaristė, TV laidų apie Bibliją vaikams kūrėja ir vedėja.
Tad visas savo interesų sritis Blau čia ir suraito.

Ech, vėl tie mano lūkesčiai pakišo koją. Tikėjausi stiprios, drąsios istorijos, gal net suvokimo, kodėl moterys pačios sąmoningai pasirenka gyvenimą be vaikų.

As a childless woman, I’m always intrigued by books involving childless women & The Others intrigued me even more with its story of a pact between 4 university friends to never have children. Decades later, a murder occurs. Who was it? Why?
A great book, a tale well told & there was certainly nothing lost in its translation from Hebrew. Great!

The Others of the novel’s title are four female friends at an Israeli college. They bond over a common intent not to have any children, in defiance of societal norms. Two decades or so later, the members of “the Others” have drifted apart. Sheila Heller, the narrator, works at the Bible Museum, giving lectures to visiting groups and classes. Dina Kaminer, the self-appointed leader of the group, is a Bible scholar who, pilfering an idea from Sheila, has become famous (or notorious) for a controversial study about the childless women of the Bible. Ronit has left biblical studies behind and is now a relatively well-known actress. The fourth member of the “Others” was Naama, once the closest of Sheila’s friends before she committed suicide a few years after college.

Sarah Blau’s book was a bestseller in Israel and is now being published in English as part of the Pushkin Vertigo series. A college background, ritual murders, buried secrets… I’m quite surprised that the marketing for the book has not invoked the seemingly inevitable comparison to Donna Tartt’s The Secret History. Some similarities (including the feminist theological strands of the novel) also reminded me of Rachel Mann’s The Gospel of Eve, which I greatly enjoyed last year. Ultimately, however, Blau’s novel has a quite different feel to it. Despite the more shocking and violent aspects of the novel, what gives this novel its distinctive character is Sheila’s wisecracking narrative voice, well-captured in Daniella Zamir’s translation. A sort of Israeli feminist version of Bridget Jones, her humorous asides are endearing and hilarious. But the jokes and the thrill of the mystery should not mislead the reader – the novel raises some earnest philosophical and theological questions about femininity and motherhood.

קצת קשה לי לגבש דעה על הספר הזה. מצד אחד התקשיתי להניח את הספר בצד מהרגע שהתחלתי לקרוא בו, מצד שני היו בספר כמה קטעים מנדנדים שחזרו על עצמם. בעיקר, ההשוואות החוזרות ונישנות לנשות התנ"ך. הן נעשה בצורה מפורשת ללא שום רמז שיעודד תהליך מחשבתי כלשהו מצד
הקורא. ההשוואה הונחה בפני הקורא שוב ושוב: פעם לשרה, פעם ללאה, פעם לרחל. ומעל לכל ההשוואות האלה הייתה כמובן התמה המרכזית של הספר שהקבילה בין 4 הגיבורות הראשיות לדמויות התנכיות של מיכל בת שאול, לילית, מרים הנביאה ובעלת האוב.
סיפור המתח עצמו היה טוב והצליח להצמיד אותי לספר (למרות שניחשתי כבר באמצע מי הרוצח, הסופרת הצליחה לבלבל אותי ולגרום לי לפקפק שוב ושוב בניחוש שלי). מאוד אהבתי את הטון הציני, העוקצני והממורמר שבו נכתב הספר. מעבר לזה, אני חושבת שהבחירה של הסופרת להציג את הנושא של "אל הורות" באמצעות רציחת הנשים שתמכו באל הורות, היא דרך גאונית לגרום לקורא אמפטיה לנושא שבדר"כ יוצר אנטיגוניזם בחברה הישראלית.
סך הכל ספר טוב מאוד, שהקריאה בו זורמת וקלה.

ספר מצוין, מצמרר, גותי ומותח, על ארבע נשים, אשר כרתו בנערותן את ברית "האחרות" שלא להביא ילדים לעולם, אולם עם השנים מוצאות את עצמן בסבך של סודות ושקרים, שנאות וקנאות, ואפילו אלימות מוטרפת ורצח.

Pirmiausia pažvelgus į šią knygą, mano dėmesį prikaustė jos viršelis. Man asmeniškai, jis labai dailus. O ir anotacija sužadino smalsumą. Tad pradėjau skaityti dar vieną istoriją.
O istorija išties neeilinė. Keturios geriausios draugės prieš dvidešimt metų nusprendė, jog niekada nesusilauks vaikų. Bėgo metai.. Ir žinoma, jog daug pasikeitė. Draugės viena nuo kitos nutolo. Šeila ir šiandien liko ištikima pažadui. Ji beveik keturiasdešimties metų, tačiau vis dar be vaikų bei netekėjusi.
Ją sukrečia netikėta žinia, jog jos draugė Dina - nužudyta. Pririšta prie kėdės, o jos rankose žaislinė lėlė. Ant kaktos užrašyta "motina". Tokia mirtis sukelia daugybę klausimų..
Pamažu Šeila suvokia, jog viskas įgauna prasmę.. Ar verta ir jai sunerimti dėl savo gyvybės?
Neturėjau nusistačiusi didelių lūkesčių šiai knygai, bet galbūt tikėjausi kiek kitokios istorijos. Nebuvo ši knyga bloga, bet man ji pasirodė blankoka, o ypač jos veikėjai. Autorė pasirinko tikrai gana aktualią, bet vis dar opią temą. Kitiems protu nesuvokiama, kaip gali nenorėti turėti vaikų. Nors pati jau esu mama, bet manau, jog tai kiekvieno žmogaus pasirinkimas ir kiekvienas savo gyvenimą gyvena taip, kaip jam norisi.
Tiesa, pati knyga skaitėsi tikrai lengvai ir buvo gana įdomu, bet šį kartą man pritrūko cinkelio. Norėjosi, jog autorė būtų daugiau mums papasakojusi apie nusikaltimus, bei sukėlusi truputį daugiau įtampos. O ir kūrinio atomazga manęs neįtikino. Nepaisant to, labai gerbiu autorę, jog išdrįso prabilti šia tema.

מסכים עם הביקורת הקודמת של נטע. זה ספר חזק, כמעט ספר אימה שמלווה בלחש החוזר והנשנה: "תיק-תוק תיק-תוק שום תינוק שום תינוק" .
ארבע נשים שנפגשות בלימודיהן באוניברסיטה ומחליטות להיות אל-הוריות, כלומר לא להביא ילדים לעולם ומכנות את עצמן "האחרות". הסיפור פוגש את הגיבורה, שילה, בשנות הארבעים לחיה לאחר שחברתה, דינה נרצחה באופן מזעזע כשתינוק מודבק לגופה.
הספר נע בין הדיאלוגים בראשה של שילה לבין המציאות, בין דמות המכשפה שמלווה אותה משנות העשרים לחיה, דמותה כאישה למודת אכזבות מגברים ומלאת כעס כלפי הנשים האחרות. זהו קול נשי שאני לא קראתי עדיין בספרות הישראלית.
בצד החסרון: עלילת המתח לא ממש החזיקה אותי עצור נשימה (ודי הבנתי באמצע הספר כמה מהדברים שמתבררים בסוף) אבל הסוף ואולי המסקנה בסופו דיברה אלי מאוד.
אני מרגיש שהסיפור וההתמודדות שלה, על אף שהיו מעניינים, פחות נגעו בי.
אז מבחינת איכות זה בהחלט ספר שמגיע לו 5 כוכבים ומבחינת התחושה הפנימית שלי 4 כוכבים.

Okay. Did I enjoy this book? No.
Sheila is a very unlikable character, and not in the fun way. There's some weirdly casual off color statements.
But on the other hand, I'm not sure how many American readers can understand the pure excitement reading a book where the expectation is that the characters are Jewish. The society is Jewish. When they talk about the Bible, I know they mean the version I have read. As dark and uncomfortable as this story can be, it was such a relief to feel so seen and represented on the page.
And I did actually connect to the themes of this story quite a bit as a woman who's not interested in bearing a child and is involved in academia. The religious ostracization is luckily not something I experience from general American Jewry, but I know exactly the experience Sheila is speaking about. I wish they had skipped out on some of the lesbian revulsion jokes, though.
So, while unfortunately not an enjoyable reading experience, this book did actually speak very specifically to me. With some ironing of the plot and a slightly more sympathetic narrator, this could have been a 4 star.

What it is is a look at the pressures on women in the country this book is set in. I’m not at all sure it’s an accurate representation of modern day because I have no other sources to compare it to.
It is a pressure many have faced and do face all over the world in many different ways.
So from the stand point of the social commentary I found this interesting but suspenseful it wasn’t.
I didn’t like the main character but I think that was probably intentional, and maybe with more info on the pressures of societal Expectations of women in Israel it might have had more of an impact but I think three stars is where it sits for me.

Este libro tiene una buena premisa, un asesino comienza a matar mujeres y todo indica que es por un pacto que hicieron cuando eran jóvenes -no ser madres-. Sheila, la protagonista la única sobreviviente es nuestra narradora y a través de ella conocemos la historia. Admito que me atrapó la sinopsis y me quedé porque la protagonista resultaba graciosa un poco al estilo Bridget Jones.
Todo sucede en Israel y es interesante como la trama también gira al alrededor de mujeres de la Biblia que no tuvieron hijos. Sarah Blau hace una crítica y observación al respecto de cómo son vistas las mujeres en su sociedad (y así en medio mundo) plagada por el dogma.
Sin embargo creo que no logra atajar nada. Se sabe quién es la persona culpable de los crímenes desde que aparece y hay un pequeño giro con un personaje que aunque es sorpresivo no agrega mucho a la trama.
Aún así me divirtió como está narrada -creo que puede cansar e incluso ofender un poco a algunos- la protagonista es insegura pero sincera, ella misma intenta luchar con los clichés aunque también la termina arrastrando. Me hubiera gustado ver más amistad entre las mujeres, había mucho potencial en ello, en ese grupo Las otras, sin embargo...meh. Aún así el final jajaja admito que me agrado. No es satisfactorio pero me gustó.
La autora en un pequeño video contó que escribió este libro como una forma de decirle a su madre el porqué decidió no tener hijos y comentó también que la respuesta de su madre es el material para su siguiente thriller jajaja

Één grote teleurstelling...meer kan ik niet zeggen.
Ik begon vol van verwachting aan dit boek maar kwam echt niet in het verhaal.

Dark and sad (and, to me, not the least bit funny) and rather difficult to finish.

This is a story about a pact that four girls made while in college, that comes back to haunt them. Believing that being childless
was better, the four girls promised never to have children. Set in Israel and filed with biblical refences to support their ideas,
they each go on to live their lives untill they are brought back together when someone seems to be targeting them.
Filled with really strong and realistic female characters, I started to wonder just why these girls became friends. They
had one thing in common and it seemed as if this pact defined their life and seemed almost cultish to me. Our main character Sheila
seemed distressed about her life but was pushing it down. This made her more relatable in alot of ways. This pact defined her life
and she seemed to grow more quiet as the years passed. Other characters from her younger days were all quite hostile, continuing a theme of people
being unable to let things go.
I could not figure out who could have killed the girls. There was a nice twist that just made sense and I liked the way that this ended. This added a nice phsycological
element to the story.
I did not dislike anything really about this book, it was easy to read. It was a unique take but could arise feelings depending on the readers situation.
Being childless is such a heavy topic and often scrutnized by society and this book presents this underlining theme.

had one thing in common and it seemed as if this pact defined their life and seemed almost cultish to me. Our main character Sheila
seemed distressed about her life but was pushing it down. This made her more relatable in alot of ways. This pact defined her life
and she seemed to grow more quiet as the years passed. Other characters from her younger days were all quite hostile, continuing a theme of people
being unable to let things go.
I could not figure out who could have killed the girls. There was a nice twist that just made sense and I liked the way that this ended. This added a nice phsycological
element to the story.
I did not dislike anything really about this book, it was easy to read. It was a unique take but could arise feelings depending on the readers situation.
Being childless is such a heavy topic and often scrutnized by society and this book presents this underlining theme.

I just wrapped up reading this book, and while I do feel like it is a solid read, it just didn't do anything for me. The story was interesting even though none of the characters were very likeable, but my main issue was the lack of suspense in what seems to be a thriller. The main character was quite annoying at times, and the ending was very anticlimactic in my opinion.
