Sanctuary #6

Prodigal Son

Rate this book
He lost everything once. He’s not going to let it happen again.

Matt Winston led a charmed life. Great family, great friends, and a girl he’d do anything for.

Then tragedy struck. He lost everything, including his way. He dealt with it the only way he knew how-by becoming the best damn SEAL team leader he could be.

Now he’s out of the service, stronger, wiser, and with a new purpose: turning his burnt-out family legacy into a place where he can help fellow vets find their way back into civilian society.

Nothing will bring back what he lost—except possibly the small town corruption that brings her back to into his life.

When Hayley Freed left town suddenly all those years ago amidst rumors and scandal, the hardest part had been walking away from the only boy she’d ever loved.

He’d been her knight in shining armor then. In her heart, he still was.

Now she’s back, and she’s not alone. She’s bringing justice, vengeance, and karma with her. This US Deputy Marshal is on a mission, and it’s as personal as it gets.

And maybe, just maybe, she’ll get a second chance to do right by her knight in the process.

As Matt and Hayley work together to rid their sleepy little mountain town of the rampant greed and corruption that threatens to destroy it, will they re-discover the magic that will give them the happily ever after they deserve?

Prodigal Son is the final, exciting conclusion to the Sanctuary series, contemporary romantic suspense featuring former military heroes and the women who always have their six.

Matt

“Heads-up, Church. Things are about to get interesting.”

Matt Winston—Church to his former military friends—leaned back and mentally prepared himself for whatever was coming next. If Ian Callaghan said things were going to get interesting, it meant that the proverbial shit hitting the fan was imminent. The sheer joy in the guy’s face was another tell. The more complicated and challenging a situation became, the happier Ian was.

“Tell me.”

“A new kid wandered onto our playground this morning, and this one has the potential to change the game.”

Matt felt the muscles at the base of his skull tighten. Sumneyville was already in the crosshairs of the Feds, thanks to a couple of village idiots who had thought to make a quick buck and inadvertently gotten themselves involved with an international arms cartel.

He exhaled. “Who?”

“A US deputy marshal.”

Ian paused, watching Matt’s reaction closely over the secure video link. Matt didn’t give him one, though his chest started to tighten.

“I suppose it was inevitable,” Matt said, keeping his tone neutral. “DMs chase down federal fugitives and seize assets acquired through illegal activities, right?”

Both applied. Local accountant Luther Renninger had been embezzling his clients’ money to bankroll an illegal weapons franchise. Renninger had gone into hiding nearly a year earlier, so he was technically a fugitive as well.

Ian grinned. “You seem to know a lot about US deputy marshals, Church.”

Matt did know a lot about marshals. He had a feeling Ian knew exactly why, too. There was little Ian didn’t know about the people he and his brothers dealt with, and they’d been supportive of Sanctuary from day one.

“Here’s the really interesting part,” Ian continued, his eyes glittering. “This particular US deputy marshal has local ties, and—spoiler alert—they’re not all good ones.”

“Isn’t that a conflict of interest?” Matt said conversationally, but inside, his heart was hammering.

“Under normal circumstances, yes, but in this case, it’s kind of a gray area. The DM in question isn’t in town officially but on a personal leave of absence.”

Matt frowned. Undercover was one thing. Unsanctioned was something else entirely. “Personal, you say? So, off the company radar?”

Ian grew more serious. “Oh, someone knows. There are too many eyes on this cartel business to believe otherwise. Too many cooks in the kitchen, if you will, and we both know how well multiagency task forces work together.”

Yeah, Matt knew.

“Someone’s looking for an advantage. My guess is, they’re giving the DM just enough rope to hang themself,” Ian continued. “The powers that be are getting impatient. Big dicks are starting to swing. They want this shit wrapped up sooner rather than later and for good reason. The political climate is explosive right now.”

Matt knew that, too. Just as he knew that US marshals were appointed—and removed—by the POTUS. Depending on what happened in the next election, many of the current ninety-four marshals heading up districts across the country and beyond might find themselves getting handed their walking papers. Closing big, important cases could go a long way in proving their worth and keeping their asses behind their desks.

“I also don’t need to tell you,” Ian continued, “that in working off the record, the DM is giving the marshals plausible deniability ICOCF.”

“ICOCF?”

“In case of clusterfuck,” Ian clarified.

Which was more than likely to happen.

“Then, I guess we’ll have to make sure the DM’s visit doesn’t turn into a clusterfuck.”

Ian’s grin was back. “I was hoping you’d say that because we have a plan.”

Of course they did. The Callaghans always had a plan. Usually, several of them to cover every possible outcome because they left nothing to chance.

“What is it?”

“First, we need to establish a connection with the DM. It should be someone they can trust. Someone with whom they have history.”

And there was the devious twinkle in Ian’s eyes. Yeah, the fucker knew all right.

Matt nodded, keeping his expression even.

“Ideally, that someone would also be single and unattached,” Ian added.

“Why is that?”

“Fewer morality concerns. Whoever takes this on is going to have to stick close to the DM. Really close. I’m talking twenty-four/seven coverage availability. Plus, it’s dangerous. Renninger and his partners in crime are morons, but the people they got mixed up with aren’t.”

Matt pretended to think about it and then exhaled. As the only remaining single male among the six partners who owned and operated Sanctuary, he was the obvious choice. “Well, I guess that clinches it. I’m your man.”

Ian chuckled. “Yeah, I figured as much. Listen, Church, we’ve got your six on this one.”

He didn’t doubt it. “Appreciate it.”

“My gut’s humming,” Ian said, and Matt knew exactly what he meant because he’d been feeling the same sense that something big was coming. Things had been quiet lately. Too quiet. Like the calm before the storm. “Keep me posted, yeah?”

“I will,” Matt assured him. “I’ll head into town today and assess.”

“You do that.”

Matt extended his arm to end the secure connection, but Ian wasn’t quite finished.

“Hey, Church.”

“Yeah?”

“You didn’t ask who the DM was. Don’t you want a name? A physical description? A copy of the very thorough dossier I compiled?”

Fucker.

“Yeah, sure. Send it over.”

The telltale ding of a new item in his inbox was barely audible over the sound of Ian’s rich laughter.

Fabulous series, each book was unique in its own way and what a way to end it with Prodigal Son. I wondered why we never started with Matt’s (Church) story but now I get it, his story was the absolute perfect conclusion to it all. With all the loss he experienced and yet he was still able to fight his way through it all. Matt had everything going against him but yet he rebuilt his family farm along with his ex-military buddies and together they were making a Sanctuary for people returning from the military to heal and reorient themselves into society. The town of Sumneyville was made to believe that this was dangerous and would cause all kinds of problems until Hayley Fields returned home.

I can’t say a bad thing about any of Abbie Zanders books, I have enjoyed each and every one and can’t wait to read more of them!

The finale to Abbie Zanders' SANCTUARY series is her best yet! The story comes full circle with Matt Winston, the local boy turned Navy SEAL team leader. Matt returns home to Sumneyville never having forgotten his first and only love, Haley Freed. Like so many returning veterans, he drifts until he realizes what he has in the former resort owned by his family and destroyed in a tragic fire....a way to help vets re-acclimate to civilian life.

The struggle between dangerous, highly illegal activities in Sumneyville and the Sanctuary for the vets is gripping and all the questions raised in the series are answered. Matt and Haley get their HEA, of course, and the entire Sanctuary team helps the town begin to heal and repair itself. Sad to see this series end, I'm SO anticipating all the exciting stories yet to come from the incomparable Abbie Zanders!

Abbie Zanders closed with golden key the Sanctuary series with Prodigal Son:
Matt, he is steady romantic and loyal to a fault. Loyal to his values, his brother’s seal team and his love. That’s exactly what I like most. He knows he really loves Halley and he didn't deny that nor her. When they meet again it's romantic and hot. Breathtaking.

Halley is brilliant and her personality gives action to the book. It’s a perfect closure to all of the mysteries that have surrounded Sumneyville. A series that I will definitely miss and reread often. The men at the Sanctuary have some universal values, such as respect and kindness, which always encourages me!

*Deep fortifying breath*

I'm at a loss for words. (in the most wonderful way) I've read the entire series of Sanctuary, and I have to say that I have been looking forward so much to this last installment. Church and Haley are ABSOLUTELY PERFECT for each other! I've been waiting for Church to get his HEA for what seems like forever, and FINALLY, and he got it! I love the way Abbie Zanders ties everything up in the finale. I got answers to all of my questions, and I'm a very, very happy girl right now. I would highly, highly recommend this book! Congratulations, Abbie Zanders to another successful series! 5 stars ALL THE WAY!!!!!

I was so excited to finally be able to read Church and Hayley’s story and let me tell you…It was definitely worth the wait! Although I loved all the Sanctuary guys’ stories, Church’s has been my favorite! Add in a few cameos by the Callaghan brothers and you’ve got an awesome read!!! As a side note, I know sometimes I see an odd food mentioned in a book and think “I need to try that.” If this is you too…skip the scrapple! Growing up in Pennsylvania, I speak from experience..it’s one thing you definitely want to avoid!

Wow! What a conclusion to a fabulous series! It was great to finally get Matt’s(Church) romantic backstory and Hayley is the perfect woman for him still. This book fills in any gaps in the Sumneyville picture and explains why there is the feud between the police and the Sanctuary guys. I can’t say any more without giving away spoilers but to truly enjoy this book to the max the others in the series should be read first.
I received this as an ARC in return for an honest review and I loved it .

Another great book by a talented author!! As always there was humor, mystery, romance, and sexy times. This was the last book in the Sanctuary series. Harley was a great character, loving yet kickass at the same time. It was great to see some old friends again. Also, to see the way every thing wrapped up. Finally, I can't wait for the next book by Abbie.

This is book 6 in the Sanctuary series and I would absolutely read this in order as they all build upon a bigger story ARC. With that being said, in this one we finally get Matt "Church" Winston's story!! Matt had always had a great life. He had a great family, friend's, and his life was going exactly as he wanted it to. Until the worst happened and he lost everything all at once. He lost his way and dealt with it by becoming the best SEAL that he could. And now that he is out of the service, he is trying to turn what was a tragedy into something that will remind him of how good his family and home was. But the town corruption is trying to waylay all his plans, until it brings home the one person he thought he would never get to see again. When Hayley Freed left town, she knew the rumors would run rampant. The hardest part of her leaving though, was leaving the one person she loved above all else. But now she is back, and she plans to bring justice to those who deserve it. As a US Deputy Marshall she has the know how in order to make it happen. And if in the process she gets to see the one person who meant everything to her? Well, maybe this time she can see what would have happened if they had never been separated.

I have been so impatient for Matt's story. I knew it had to be good or it would just ruin the whole series for me. But guess what? It wasn't just good-it was phenomenal for me! Not only do we get what truly happened between Matt and Hayley all those years ago but we also get to see how much those events shaped the people they are today. I loved them together. Hayley is such a strong woman but she also has a tender heart. She is smart and made the things she had hoped and dreamed of come true-all of this despite how she was raised and who she is related to. But not only that, she gave up the one person she truly loved above all else. All in order to protect him. And I loved her character for Matt. Matt has always been this strong, stoic, and caring man. I knew there had to be more things in his background than what we had seen but I wasn't expecting what was there! And honestly, that just made me love him even more. Their love for each other was always beyond just physical attraction, they truly care about what happens to each other.

I loved how the bigger story ARC plays out and the addition of a certain character we have seen before! And I am not just talking about Ian! Although I loved seeing him as well! I am sad that this is the end of this series, just because I really loved these characters. But I am always hopeful that we will see more in this world or the Callaghan's! Personally, I loved how everything was tied up. Not only do we get the full answers to what was going but there was a lot of vindication as well. Another book to add to my reread list!

This final installment of an amazing series has it all. Questions are answered, lovers are reunited, justice is served and karma is a beautiful thing.

Amazing H/h, a great supporting cast, visits from well loved characters and a storyline that ties it all up neatly.

What a spectacular ending to this series. Matt and Haley’s story is just a wonderful read. A real page turner from start to finish! How they weave all they different parts of this series together to get their HEA makes for an eventful and heartwarming read. Absolutely loved it!

I did a little happy dance when I received my ARC copy of this finale book to The Sanctuary Series, and a little heart warming sigh when I finished. I did take a couple of days after finishing to process my thoughts and feelings about this story though, because I was torn. Although, I do have some feelings of disappointment, I did love the love story in this book. Church, very clearly and thoroughly loves Hayley. From the beginning of the story, there was never any question of that. I loved what a strong female heroine Hayley was and what a strong role she had in this book. Church continued to be a strong, stoic leader of his group, that clearly wants the best for Hayley, his guys and Sanctuary. As with every book in this series, as well as every Zanders’ story I’ve had the pleasure to read, the storyline is original, characters are colorful, and everything rich in detail. So now for my disappointment, I was frustrated with the anticlimactic takedown of Daryl and the preppers. Maybe I’m vengeful, but these men basically tormented Sumneyville and especially our previous heroines and men of Sanctuary. To basically summarize that they were arrested was somewhat of a letdown. I guess I was wanting/hoping for some major confrontation with Daryl or at least Lenny (who I was kinda holding out hope for). I am hopeful that maybe with the introduction of “Tim”, might mean we have future stories coming. I give our finale, 5 stars.

The second chance

Wow, how the tangled webs unravel. Couldn't wait for Matt's story and I loved it. The chemistry between Haley and Matt leaped off the pages. So enjoyed finding out their back story. Throw in the twists and turns al9mg with the rest of the crew from Sanctuary and I couldn't put it down. If you haven't read the rest of the series it's ok they are all standalone but I can say having read them all adds to the overall experience of Sanctuary

Wow what an amazing story to finish this wonderful series. This book had it all. A great cast of characters. Brilliant storyline to tie up all loose ends. It finally felt like Church is at peace. His girl is back and his dream is being realised. So many threads to tie up but it was done very well by Ms Zanders. Loved the way justice was served. Sad to see this end but can’t wait to read more books by this great author.

Fantastic read!

What an excellent ending to a wonderful series! I have loved this series from the first book! And the last book is even better. I have been anxiously awaiting Matt's book since book 2. Again it did not disappoint. There was enough suspense to keep me on my toes. Matt and Hayley are meant to be and I loved that they both knew it through the years they were apart.

Prodigal Son is the wrap-up and ending to the Sanctuary series. I enjoyed this book very much and it answered a lot of question that came up reading the previous books. Writing, pace and editing are very good, as always with this author, and I'm sad to see this series finished. I received an advanced review copy and this is my honest opinion.

What an epic ending to a great series! I have loved the Sanctuary series from the first book. This book was well worth the wait. So many questions are answered and everything is tied up in a neat little bow. In the town of Sumneyville everything is not as it seems. The police and fire departments are run by men who are evil personified. Matt and Hayley dated in high school but knew that a long distance relationship wasn't feasible. They decided to make sure the remaining time they had together was perfect. On the most special night of their lives, forces conspired to keep them apart. Fast forward 15 years and Hayley is back in Sumneyville. She is determined to make sure the ones responsible for the direction her life took feel the smackdown Karma is about to deliver. The men of Sanctuary and their wives are willing to do whatever it takes to help Hayley rid the town of corruption. Can Matt and Hayley put aside the past to get the HEA they deserve? Get this book ASAP and find out. Sorry, no spoilers. I received this ARC and here is my honest review

Fantastic conclusion to the Sanctuary series.

Matt "Church" Winston was an elite Navy Seal who returned to his home town with the intention of providing hope and purpose to other veterans as they reacclimate to civilian life. What he didn't expect was hostility, sabotage, and greed from many of the townsfolk he'd known his whole life. He was, however, hoping that the love of his life would return to Sumneyville after her abrupt departure many years ago.

Hayley Freed left Sumneyville in her rearview mirror years ago but never forgot Matt Winston. When an opportunity arises in her job to help end a reign of terror in her hometown, she doesn't hesitate to do what's needed. She's also hoping to run into Matt and explain her actions from so many years ago. Not only did she encounter Matt, she also learned hard things about those she loves and receives help in an unexpected way.

This is a MUST read and is an absolutely fantastic conclusion to the series. I highly recommend this series! It will be a series to enjoy again and again.

Prodigal Son😱

Matt Winston is in love with Hayley Freed and vice versa. They’ve agreed to go their own way after graduation as Matt wants to follow in his family footsteps and join the Navy and she wants to attend college. When it becomes clear Hayley has left without any goodbye to Matt, he knows she had a good reason…but he’s not sure what it is😢 Matt soon thereafter leaves for the Navy only for a fire to destroy the home he’s lived in and leaves him as the last remaining Winston😭😭

He returns later to his small home town and starts to build the Sanctuary with his teammates to help military personnel adjust back to civilian life❤️ However, the small town has secrets of its own that start coming to light not long after they arrive to start rebuilding😬

Fast forward fifteen years from Hayley’s abrupt departure, and she has returned to her small home town to exact justice against her brother and take out the “trash”. When she meets up with Matt at Sanctuary for the first time she’s surprised by his offer to help along with all the other bits of intel and the clear attraction they still hold for each other which smoulders🤩

A great ending to this series and I’m definitely going to have to check out the Callaghans’ series soon🥰

I stayed up way too late last night/this morning finishing up this book. Now I am a zombie at work and writing this review instead of working because everyone needs to read this fantastic conclusion.
This story totally wraps up the Sanctuary/Sumneyville tension and gives Church his second chance with Hayley.

I loved that Hayley was a total 180° from her brother, Daryl. There is a rehashing of all of the major events that have happened over the last six books (including Finding Home the Sumneyville/Sanctuary tie in story) so that it refreshes everyone's memory. The story moves quickly with many surprises and guest appearances.

What I loved the most was the total and complete conclusion. I mean every character is given their just rewards and we are given an awesome epilogue (in my opinion every series needs one of these). Extra bonus points for the Scrapple mention :)

I love this author and you can't go wrong in reading any of her work. I have my fingers crossed that she will continue her PNR stories, the BAMF and Mythic stories are fantastic.

"No amount of time or distance would change what he'd felt that one summer night under that stars along the shore of the lake. Fifteen years and untold life experiences later, it was still Haley's face he saw in his dreams."

"She knew it was Matt. Being in his sights felt like stepping outside right before a summer thunderstorm - when the charge in the air ghosted over her skin and made it tingle."

From beginning to end, Prodigal Son was a fitting ending to an amazing series written by the incomparable Abbie Zanders. The twists and turns surrounding Matt "Church" Winston, former Navy SEAL, and founder of Sanctuary, and his first and only love, tough-as-nails US Deputy Marshall Haley Freed, were exciting and many, and the storyline definitely keeps the reader on their toes. Despite being separated by time, distance, and a multitude of misfortunate events, the couple are able to pick back up and reconnect, proving that love really can conquer all - including the incredibly shady dealings that have been conducted under the very noses of the Sumneyville residents by the very people charged with serving and protecting the community.

Once again, Abbie has created a world that draws the reader in and makes you feel as if you are in the thick of the story itself, that you can really identify with the characters and feel their emotions.
I cannot recommend this book and the rest of the Sanctuary series enough. As amazing as this final chapter in the Sanctuary saga has been, and as neatly as everything was tied up, I will have to say that I am sad that it has come to an end. Hopefully Abbie will have all these amazing characters make cameos in future series', or even have a Sanctuary spin-off introducing us to other residents of the compound.

"Matt?"
"Yes?"
"I wish I'd known," she said whispering what had become her greatest regret.
He knew exactly what she was talking about. "There was nothing you could have done."
"I could have been there for you."
Matt reached out, tracing the slim chain around her neck with his finger, gently tugging at the citrine pendant. A small smile curled his lips. "You are always with me Haley. Don't you know that?"

Prodigal Son was the perfect ending to the Sanctuary Series. It was a witty, suspenseful, sexy page-turner, and I could not put it down. Abbie Zanders writes such wonderful characters. Matt and Hayley found something special in high school, but they went different directions with their lives. They’ve both felt like they were always missing a piece of their soul. Hayley is back in town to help solve the corruption problem her way. Will things work out for them this time? Can they make their town a good place to live again? No spoilers here! I lost sleep to finish this book, but it was totally worth it. I am sad to see this series end, but I am sure that Abbie Zanders has more awesome books coming in the future.

Abbie Zanders could not have written a more perfect conclusion to the Sanctuary series. I’ve been so looking forward to Church’s story, and this did not disappoint at all, it was even better than expected. Matt “Church” Winston & Hayley Freed found each other in high school, but, due to circumstances out of their control, went their separate ways. Fifteen years later, Matt is back with Sanctuary and Hayley is back for her own reasons. Will this be their second chance? I love all the books, but this is actually my favorite book of the entire series, I absolutely adore Matt & Hayley. And we also get a couple of cameo appearances by a couple of Callaghan brothers, which is always fun. This is just an awesome book!!

My world is complete now that I’ve read Matts story. Matt finally gets his HEA with Hayley and we find out everything that’s been happening in Sumneyville. This is the long awaited and highly anticipated final book in the Sanctuary series. Boy was it worth the wait. Hayley is back home and is looking for answers. Matt and his guys are going to help her get them. I absolutely loved this book. It was everything I was hoping for and more. Just when I think I’ve worked out all the twists I find out that there’s more. A brilliant book and I was captivated from start to finish.

Hallelujah! Questions are all answered!

The final book in the "Sanctuary" series kept me up late into the night. Matt and Hayley's story brings a wonderful conclusion to the drama that takes place in Sumneyville. All the characters are in play as Matt, aka Church, and the rest of his team take on the evil that rules this small town. When Hayley enters the picture, things definitely become more interesting. I would recommend this series to anyone that loves strong military alpha males, the women that are strong enough to stand with them, and a story that makes you feel as if you are a part of the community.

SPEECHLESS….
I’m so in love with Matt Winston (Church) and Hayley Freed’s story. After all these years they finally made it back together again. The Seal team leader and the Deputy Marshall. Now they must work together to rid the town of corruption. The twists and turns and the O.M.G. moments will leave you speechless. In true Abbie Zanders style she tied up all of the loose ends and does it brilliantly. The truth about old feuds, gossip and the stories that never seemed to add up all make sense now. But can the little town of Sumneyville and the Sanctuary put the past behind them and make a fresh start with a new vision and new dreams?

“This is one of those stories that make you want to read really slowly because you never want it to end.”

I’ve read the entire Sanctuary series and have eagerly awaited Church’s book. This book also gives an end to the ongoing saga with the residence of Sumnerby.

This one sees Church reunited with “the one that got away”. Hayley disappeared but never forgot Matt - and when they meet again it’s as explosive as it was when she left.

Hayley’s returned to finally shake some skeletons out of her family’s closet - she’s no damsel in distress, she’s a bit of a badass.

I could not put this book down - a great read which had me gripped. My only complaint is that I’m not ready to say goodbye to the Sanctuary clan - I love them all too much.
