You feel that fire, just let it burn There's no runnin' when it's your turn — Jazmine Sullivan The best way to describe Spencer Hendricks is calculated. From childhood to her mid-twenties, the stoic attorney has kept her life on a schedule to avoid chaos. However, when the best day of her life and the worse become one, Spencer is forced to check her harsh demeanor. And when she’s assigned to defend Black Lightning Motorsports’ newest champ, the overthinker may be taught how good freedom feels. One word to describe Lucas Jackson? Reckless. At twenty-seven, the professional driver isn’t concerned with rules, regulations, or relationships while enjoying the benefits of his hard work. Nonetheless, the party animal is humbled when his stature conjures attention he doesn’t need. In a bind and considering the advice of his mentor, Lucas finds himself focused on his inner traumas and a woman who may not mind being alone with only him.
I was pleasantly surprised When We're Alone centered around a black NASCAR driver. I loved how the author shed a spotlight on the racial element black drivers face in the predominantly white organization. Lucas is young and cocky but, he's earned the right to be young and cocky. At 27, he's the youngest black driver in NASCAR and he's winning. After an altercation with a so called racist fan, Lucas needs help getting some trumped up charges dropped. Enter Spencer Hendricks, the in house BLM (Black Lightning Motorsports) attorney. She was not a fan of Lucas' celebrity and was more than annoyed when she found herself attracted to him. With the encouragement of her friend, Spencer has decided to jump back into the dating pool after being left at the alter. Lucas is not the dude she thought she would snatch the band-aid off for. I loved how they challenged each other. The player trying to become a one woman man and the type A organized lawyer willing to give love another try but, on her terms. These two were total opposites but, they were what each other needed. I loved watching Spencer let go of her neurosis and accept the love Lucas wanted to give her. She more than deserved it. When We're Alone was my first book by Tucora Monique. I wouldn't say I was wowed by it but, I did enjoy it.
Whew, Spencer was a piece of WORK! I honestly don’t blame Sean for leaving her at the alter. I potentially might have done the same, lol. Lucas was just what she needed to break out of her rigid shell and open herself up to love.
This book was very well written and I throughly enjoyed the authors writing style.
OMG!! This author really have my heart racing!! I loved the storyline and the characters so that’s a plus! Lucas was a great man IDC what the author spoke of lol. Spencer was stuck on her past but Lucas changed her life in more ways than she thought of. I love the real life moments the author touched on and the idea of having all black workers that are successful and this author thrives on that. Y’all please read this book you won’t be disappointed.
This love story was so organic. The sparks that were created on these pages were enough to make me smile while reading. I enjoyed how this author showed that broken hearts can be repaired by someone you wouldn’t expect. I look forward to reading more books from this author.
Enjoyed this read. I felt for Spencer, being embarrassed, humiliated and hurt in the way that she was. So, I understood her hesitation with men. But, damn she was a hard ass, for real for real! Running her life with every moment accounted for, and structured in a way that she could control, is where she thrived. Meeting Lucas, the arrogant, hothead racer, threw her completely off her square. She tried to blow him off at every turn, but it only fueled him more to go after her. Lucas knew right away that she would be the one that he was willing to change for. During their time together, Lucas was allowed to be vulnerable with Spencer, by letting her know that he didn't need the spotlight to shine. Spencer, was able to loosen up, by letting him know her insecurities and letting him show her different. I hated that Spencer initially ran when she was scared, but she got it together. Just wished there was more to that ending! I loved catching up with Sonder and Nayo. (Although they need their own story to really do that)! 😁 Good job! 👍👍👍
A story about an AA NASCAR driver would be an unlikely story for me. I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the story, even with the racial element included. Lucas Jackson was the professional driver who found himself in need of legal assistance after a racial incident. Spenser Hendricks was jilted at the start of the story, and continued to hold bad feelings for men in general. Lucas's arrogance was just the right amount of bad boy and sweetness to turn Spenser's heart around. I loved this story.
This NTMA did an amazing job on telling Luke & Spencer's love journey. So much devastation made me appreciate their efforts. The healing, growth, and vulnerability displayed gave me a sense of peace for them. Spencer was like the crayon broken, but soon realized she could still color broken into pieces. Luke made sure to appreciate all da hell he went through to get to her! I thoroughly enjoyed this story & am looking forward to more by this author! Great job!💯💐💐
After being left at the altar, Spencer is content on being single but after two years of being off the market she finds herself falling for the, “bad guy”. First, this was a really great read. 👏🏾A super organized- type A person and a care free person trying to make things work just screams chaos but I found myself rooting for this couple!! If anyone deserved to be loved, it was Spencer. She was a boss but she needed someone to bring her down just a tad and let her hair down. Lucas was IT for Spencer. He didn’t care about her calendars or her schedule, lol. Lucas was the perfect partner and he had a bomb personality. However, I think Lucas was misunderstood and just a little lonely. He too needed and wanted that special person.
The author does a really good job with pulling the readers into the story because her characters are always super relatable and memorable. But they’re also stubborn that you cannot help but love them. More than a few times I wanted to shake either character and in the next scene I wanted to hug them, lol! 😅This is a read that brings good love, a little drama, and a happy ending when it’s all said and done. Great work!♥️
Bay-be Queen Tucora really did her thang with this "chaotic meets organized" trope. My heart broke for Spencer when Sean humiliated her at their wedding. Like why pay all that money just to show up and show you a**🤔. I ain't Gina lie I was low-key hoping she'd run into him while she was out with her new boo🤷🏽. Lucas & Spencer were polar opposites but yet so perfect for each other. They brought out the best in each other. The way they opened up and explored new things, stepped outside their box and just went with the flow of things. Now I ain't gonna lie, Spencer irked my nerves treating Lucas like the everyday f'boy like he didn't go out of his way to show her that he wanted more than her body. Her showing up in her trench coat, with the boom box blasting "Leave The Door Open" after she rejected him for the last time was everything😁💕. I really enjoyed their story and I hated it ended, could've definitely read more about them. Maybe we'll get a wedding/Baby update🤔💕
This author is inching into my top favorites. I can't even begin to describe her works but it has a vibe that I can ease into knowing that when I am finished with her works I am lacking nothing. The book starts with Spencer being left at the altar because her soon to be ex told her she was both boring and controlling. Whew! Then there is Luke who is a Black NASCAR champion who does not give out much...well you know...LOL. So control meets chaos and you have a story worth reading. Of course I wanted more when I got to the end because I truly enjoyed it. I will be on standby for more from this author. In the meantime I need to reach back and read Nayo and Sonder's story.
Started off slow and then boom I was hit with such an amazing read. I didn’t know how much I would love this trope but hunny I love it. Spencer and Lucas is just a match made In heaven. Who would have known that organized and reckless fit together so perfectly. I loved the growth that Spencer had shown and that she was able to move out of her own way to experience love. I can’t wait to hear more about this couple. Definitely an amazing read Tucora never disappoints and I can wait for what’s next
I must say Lucas had to work to pull me in because Sonder is a hard HP act to follow but once he showed his vulnerable side, nurturing and giving, I was all in. Spencer needed a dose of that and more and even though she didn’t trust it, she yielded. Once she did—whew! All I will say is Tucora has found yet another way to show just how amazing she can take a wound, flaw, imperfect situation and perfect it amazingly. Lucas still not the #1 bae but I want more from him and Spencer!
Yesssss, this story gave me LIFE...but it was too short!!😭
THANK YOU for the OG BLM check-in! Sonder and Nayo are forever my favorite couple, so I lost it when this bio dropped! I was mega disappointed that this read was so short, but it had me grinning from page one. I enjoyed Spencer and Lucas' opposite personalities. I love how he not only acknowledged her difficult traits, but was attracted to some of them and helped her see the beauty in herself. His humor and pet names were marvelous. I'm glad she was able to come around and get her HEA after that jerk dropped the ball. Now can we please please please get a future check in on that third baby...👀 Maybe a holiday short, or full if your feeling generous, on the original BLM family who started it all? I miss flash. You have us feening for more! 😍😍
On her wedding day, Spencer find out her soon to be husband didn't want her and she was devastated. After two years of going through her issues in the past, Spencer trys again, but she still hasn't found the one, until she meetsucas, a famous black Nascar Driver. Lucas is not Spencer type, but the more he pushes and she see who he really is, she gives him a try and really likes him. So when she gets hurt because of him, she calls it quits. Lucas was a man who knew what he wanted and Spencer was who he wanted, she became his end all. Spencer was difficult, but Lucas knew how to handle her. This was such a great book and the chemistry between Spencer and Lucas was fun to look at. I loved everything about them as a couple. I was so glad they both got the person who they were meant to be with. Tucora writes some good love stories!!!
This was a 3.5 for me. There were big chunks of the story that I really enjoyed interspersed with ones that I wasn't feeling as much. Both Spencer and Lucas were irksome but I liked the progression they showed (Lucas moreso than Spencer) over the course of the story. It was kinda iffy determining how much time elapsed; they seemed to progress rather quickly. But that happens.
One thing I did appreciate was Lucas refusing to chase Spencer after she shut him out. That was a refreshing change. Oftentimes I read in books where the men go running after the women regardless of how super-difficult - and even mean - they are, so I'm glad Lucas didn't do that.
Yes!!! I’m smiling so hard right now. It’s definitely the growth for me. Spencer was very stubborn and although I didn’t agree with how Sean went about things I understood his point. She was never his because when you truly love someone you’ll open up to them and be willing to sacrifice. Luke made my heart flutter. Regardless of his past he was willing to fight for what he believed was his. It was beautiful chaos and I loved every minute
Read this in one sitting, loved Lucas and Spencer. Spencer was a little OCD with her organizing, her planning everything down to the last second. Lucas was total different, partying and having fun. Two totally opposite personalities. But circumstances brought them together. This story touch on racism. So sad 2021 and we are still dealing with racism. I may be darker than you but we all bleed RED.
This is one of those you’re going to have to read for yourself. It’s a short read so everything happens fast and reading it after a longer read will probably make you feel like I do. Like none of it makes sense. I don’t know if it’s the writing on me or maybe I just didn’t grasp something. Either way I honestly don’t know if I liked it but it was a quick easy read.
Lucas and Spencer were a trip. I guess it's true opposite attract. Spencer was a piece of work she got on my nerves no matter the therapy she went through she just didn't feel she could be loved. Lucas told her the truth no matter what though. I hope we can get more on them!!
This was a cute story that I enjoyed from beginning to end! I was a little worried for a minute close to the end but the way the author brought it all together had me grinning like I was the one receiving the boom box treatment 💖 I recommend this read as you will not be disappointed. Get ready for another ride with BLM, you’ll truly enjoy Spencer and Lucas!!!
I can’t actually put my finger on it but this story is missing something. It’s like it was almost there but missed the mark. Some storylines were left unfinished. Like what was point of bringing up Holly if nothing was going to go down with her. Then there was no follow up to the Sean storyline. It was just missing some key elements.
…a great love story that doesn’t end with someone having a baby and getting married after just a couple of months! It actually left me wanting to see where their love story will go. Lucas didn’t give up on Spencer despite her trying to push him away; and Spencer was able to bring a calmness to Lucas’ life that allowed for him to just slow down.
Spencer went through a bad relationship and closed her heart off too anyone and then here comes bad boy rude boy Lucas. He was determined to get her and played his cards well. One hiccup and could've ended but Spencer said not today and got her man. I loved it
This is maybe the 5th book I’ve read by this author and they all amaze me. I love the connection I felt with the main character as a fellow so called Ice Princess. I love how her character development touched on depression, PTSD, and how mental health can make it hard to find love. The male main character was the right person for the job.
I felt so bad for Spencer she didn't deserve being left at the alter. She wasn't open to love but Lucas came in and changed the way she viewed love. Definitely a great read
Another banger!!! I absolutely love this story. It’s something about being vulnerable and getting acceptance that has my hope on high. It’s the dialogue, characters, plot, setting everything for me❤️. Definitely want to hear more from these two.
Did it really have to end like that. It was a good ending though. I enjoyed this story of seemingly opposite people stepping outside of comfort and falling in love. This is definitely a short must read .
A cute love story that has some great characters. A little drama, past hurt, and the real life issues made for a good read. I enjoyed the storyline and will be reading more by this author.
Great Job!! Sidney just needed a real man like LJ to break down her bearers. She did get on my nerves at times, but I can understand with her past trauma. LJ needed a woman to love him and show him that he needed to be loved the right way.
