After debating whether I should write a review or not for this book, I decided that I would, as I felt compelled to share some of my thoughts in case some of you were wondering whether this book is worth the read (or not).
To answer this question… yes! It is absolutely so worth the read!
It is both magical and lovely, as it is at times heart wrenching and devastating. It raises important topics in a respectful manner, without necessarily downplaying any of it, along with other unique and interesting questions in relation to the world in which the story is set. Some people compare it to Harry Potter, and while I do think this is true as I can definitely see the influences it had in the story, I do think it is a completely different vibe, tone, and story overall.
It also includes a variety of characters in the story, all of whom have their strengths and flaws and feel like people I actually know.
The book is also written in Spanish. Even though it’s been years since I last read a book written in Spanish, I found myself reading this with ease—in other words, it’s very easy to read and/or get through. If by any chance you feel discouraged to read it because of the length of the book, don’t be! It’ll be over before you even realize it, and you’ll end up wanting to read more. At least, that was my case!
All in all, I truly believe that this book is special, and by far one of the best books I’ve read this year so far, for all of the reasons I mentioned above. I think this is due in part because I felt identified with the cast of characters, with the way some of the characters expressed themselves. I felt as if I could find traces of Puerto Rico in them, which is something that I hadn’t realized how much it meant to me up until recently, since I, myself, am from Puerto Rico (as well as the author).
But in any case, to reiterate my earlier statement… this book is totally worth the read and I fully recommend it to all fantasy lovers, as well as to anyone that wants to try something different for their reading!
