Timothy Zahn has a bad habit with his nonsensical references to the original trilogy. There are so many odd observations, which makes it feel like these characters don't have lives outside the events of that trilogy and makes it rather restrictive. One example I can’t remember the exact quote, but it roughly translates to “I can’t believe hes that scrawny kid I picked up from Tatooine.” Just forget about Luke’s growth in Episodes 5-6, why is Han still repeating lines akin to that 5 years after the original trilogy? There are just random lines, like I remember... from x event in the original trilogy. To give Timothy Zahn the benefit of the doubt, I believe he was using it as a contrast to reinforce these news stakes but not really executing it as intended.
