This is a Second Chance Romance with some Steamy Times, and this is the third book in the Westmoreland Legacy: The Outlaws series. Leslie and Sloan ran into each other after ten years at a old friend's wedding. They both need to get over some lies a friend say broke them up ten years ago, but Will they both be able to learn to move up and open their hearts up again. Her company is in trouble, and he agrees to save her company if she goes to a winter retreat with him during Christmas. I really enjoyed this book, and I love seeing the two main characters falling in love with each other again. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Harlequin Desire) or author (Brenda Jackson) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
Merged review:
This is a Second Chance Romance with some Steamy Times, and this is the third book in the Westmoreland Legacy: The Outlaws series. I have read and reviewed the first two books in this series. This was a warm Christmas story. It is a second chance romance. This narrative vividly shows the extreme animosity and hatred one can carry for years. Also, that friends can be you worst enemy. My face was tight and lips pressed when reading those scenes! The STEAM is definitely present in this book. As I always state, it is so nice to revisit the Westmoreland and Outlaw clan. I truly thought I couldn't love another family more than the Westmorelands', but the Outlaws have stolen my heart as well. Reading this book has me researching cabins for a winter getaway sans the Alaskan weather and bears.
I highly recommend.
Thank you to Harlequin and Harlequin Desire for providing an eARC of this book for review.
This book gave me all the warm holiday feels, and the fact that it was a second chance romance was icing on the cake. Wasn’t crazy about the audiobook, but I loved the story!!
What happens when two people who loved each other bump into each other at a wedding ten years later. The secrets and lies that broke them apart come to the surface and light is shed on the whole devastation that broke them apart.
What will happen When Sloan comes up with a plan to save Leslie’s business, that’s threatened by a horrible nemesis who attempts to destroy it for the fun of it? Will Leslie agree to his terms, and that little something extra involved? You’ll have to read and see.
Hearts are revealed, healed and ready to acknowledge the deep love that never left for each other. Now that’s second change romance that I love!
Another Outlaw brother finds his mate in this holiday reunion romance entitled What He Wants for Christmas. He is the dashing, Sloan Outlaw and he's helping his ex, Leslie Cassidy claimed back her cosmetic company as well the one lady love that got away! Loving this series!
They lost ten years together due to conniving heffas messing up the relationship. I'm glad they got answers which led to closure. And at Christmastime. 🥰
Good second chance story. Ten years after they broke up, Sloan and Leslie met again at a friend's wedding. The sparks are still there, but Sloan hasn't forgiven the way she left him without explaining why. However, when he hears that her company is in danger of a hostile takeover, he can't resist stepping in to help, though with conditions.
Leslie was surprised to run into Sloan at their friends' wedding and shocked when he showed up at her office to offer his help. She's reluctant to accept when she hears that he wants her to spend a week alone with him at his remote cabin. But when the takeover attempt becomes critical, she gives in to Sloan's demands.
I enjoyed the rekindling of the relationship between Sloan and Leslie. There was no doubt about the sparks of attraction that still existed between them, but both have serious trust issues that need to be addressed. Ten years earlier, they were driven apart by lies told to Leslie. Though she found out the truth a few years later, she never contacted Sloan to explain or apologize. I liked that they talked about what happened and admitted that both were at fault for their actions. Once that was dealt with, both had to face the attraction that still burned between them. Sloan is all for giving in, but Leslie fears losing her heart again.
I liked seeing Leslie and Sloan spend time together. They are different people than ten years ago, and they discover a mutual admiration. There are some sweet times together, such as their trip to visit the Yule family. There are also some steamy moments as their attraction continues to burn hot. Resistance is no longer an option when a blizzard traps them in the cabin. The intensity of their connection scares Sloan, and he pulls away when Leslie calls him out on what they have together. I ached for both as each had to face their fears. I wanted to shake Leslie for running and Sloan for not talking to her about his feelings. After an unexpected revelation, I loved seeing Sloan go after what he wanted and finally open up about his feelings, past and present. His big moment at the end was sweet and emotional. I loved the bits at the end with the other Outlaws and Westmorelands, and the epilogue was great.
The story of the hostile takeover, its reasons, and Sloan's actions to prevent it from happening were fascinating. As more information surfaced, I was amazed at what one man would do for revenge. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Sloan go up against him and the results of that battle.
New beginnings start with old drama. Jackson turns emotions inside out with Leslie and Sloan. What he Wants for Christmas shakes up the way we look at love and inspires us to never lose trust in our hearts. Celebrate the true meaning of love with a dash of heartache.
Second chance romance + rich black people + warm holidays feels + trapped in a (mansion) cottage due to a snow storm = all of the things I needed for it to be great.
The book started strong. The first few chapters did really well, laying the groundwork for what led Sloan and Leslie apart and the chemistry that remained.
But then the plot fizzled for me. There was so much going on outside of a focus on chemistry-building that I needed for Sloan and Leslie. And then the pacing felt off - we didn’t get any smut until the last quarter of the book. And then the third act conflict was resolved so fast, and then we were at the ending - it felt a little forced.
Overall, I still liked it. Mr. Sloane sounded so damn FINE. I don't know how Leslie kept her convictions because I would have been no good. And the holiday backdrop was better than anything Hallmark has ever put out. And the mentions of other Outlaws and Westmorelands and their respective stories make me want to go read their books. So I’m thinking of adding the Westmoreland and Outlaw family books to my TBR for 2023.
Brenda Jackson never ceases to surprise and entertain me, so I was not surprised that I was glued to the pages of What He Wants for Christmas. I felt for Sloane and Leslie as they struggled to find their way back to each other after 10 years of separation at the hands of twisted people. Once again, Brenda proves that true love doesn't fade with time and distance. I highly recommend this steamy read.
Leslie and Sloan where once very much in love til a big lie tore them apart. Sloan is another one of the Outlaw family. I love reading about them.
They reconnect at a wedding. Sloan finds out about Leslie's company being in trouble so he steps in to help. He puts a stipulation in the contract that he wants her for Christmas.
When they go to the cabin for a week together nothing is going as planned. But when Sloan encounters some trouble thankfully Leslie is there to help.
Can both get over being so stubborn and figure out they are meant to be together?
Another great story in the "Outlaws" series by author Brenda Jackson.
What happens when you discover that a lie you wholeheartedly believed was just that, a lie. How do you reconcile all of the years that you lost and how do you apologize to the one person who loved you beyond measure but now wants nothing to do with you.
Leslie Cassidy believed that she would marry Sloan Outlaw and they would have a family. Meeting in college, Sloan was two years older than Leslie, before Sloan was graduated he had planned on proposing to Leslie and although she had two more years left of college, he would wait until she graduated, and then they would marry. But the day he was to propose never came, Leslie disappeared without a trace and made her father promise not to reveal to Sloan where she had gone. That was over 10 years ago and now here they were face to face at a wedding of friends, Sloan had no idea Leslie would be there and he was pissed to be blindsided, Leslie was hoping to just apologize for the wrong she had done but Sloan didn't really want to hear it.
After Sloan was told what was happening to Leslie's company, he felt compelled to help her, not because of her but he really loved her father and didn't want to see his legacy swept away. So Sloan offers to help her save the company but he had something he needed to get off of his chest with Leslie and added stipulation of his own. In his mind he needed to rid Leslie completely from his heart, he realizes he hasn't moved on from her, and maybe this one thing he asks of her will help him to finally be able to do so. But will Leslie agree to it or will she try to protect her heart from being shattered again once she reveals to Sloan the lies that were told to her and how she immediately believed them instead of coming to him first?
This was a wonderful story and a hard lesson of how to go immediately to the person and find out exactly what is going on instead of jumping the gun. And how many people have done just that and have lived to regret it, especially if the person is already gone or deceased, so the wrongs can never be made right.
This gives me what all Brenda Jackson books give me, a sweet love story (this time second chance romance) and a man determined to win his woman's heart. I can't ask for more! I know its cliche, but I love these type of stories! I also loved the updates she gave on the other Westmorelands! I'm looking forward to the next release in this series!
I clearly jumped in to a veeery long family saga series so I skimmed all the name dropping and baby updates 😂 Still an enjoyable 2nd chance, snowed in story.
Also, am I the only one who didn’t know there’s a real place called North Pole, Alaska? There’s a cute bit about saving a toy shop there.
What He Wants for Christmas by Brenda Jackson brings us back to the Westmoreland family. Sloan Outlaw has a reunion with the past. Leslie Cassidy, the woman who broke his heart ten years ago, returns to his life in an unexpected way… and this time to stay, as he discovers that Leslie is in danger of losing the cosmetics company she inherited from her father thanks to a hostile takeover. Sloan decides to help Leslie to avoid the takeover, with one condition: she must spend a week with him —and in his bed— at the cabin that the Westmorelands have on an island in Alaska.
I liked the way the story unfolds, without extravagance but with a lot of intensity. The way in which the events and secrets behind Sloan and Leslie’s breakup intertwine is complex but easy to read, leaving no loose ends, and the details are very well taken care of. The secondary characters play a fundamental role in the plot, thus showing an interesting and exciting story.
There is no doubt about one thing: Ms. Jackson knows how to tell stories, and she does it perfectly. Not to mention the setting. It made me want to visit Alaska; the scenes are so well described that you feel like you are in that cabin with Leslie and Sloan.
The best thing about this book? The author knew how to handle the surprise factor very well, and the plot twist at the end was the icing on the cake.
Leslie is dealing with a ruthless competitor trying to take down her family's company. Sloan who used to have a relationship with Leslie offers her something she really can't refuse. Just spend a little time with him at a luxury retreat and talk if anything more should happen all the better.
I will admit that the whole Sloan offering her that mini vacation in the cabin seemed a bit skivvy at first. But there was a lot of catching up going on discussing the past and it was interesting watching at old attraction make it self known after a while. Then there was the whole things about her business and seeing why this guy was really going after her family business because it was really seeming to be personal and it was interesting seeing why and how'd that turn out. Overall pretty good quick read.
Sloan & Cassidy names were even fitting for the perfect Rustics couple. So glad they found each other again. Now she has her business and family that she needed and deserved!
Just in time for the holidays 🌲 This second chance at romance will fill your heart with joy. Sloan and Leslie let you visit the Christmas experience while you learn to believe in the magic again.
Brenda Jackson is just a steady constant presence in my literary world. When I need something that is a comfort and i know what I am getting and I need to be able to trust the author to just give me a good story without unnecessary backflips I turn to Ms. Brenda. Adding to my stack of holiday Black romances, too! I found the heroine to be a tad more stubborn than necessary and the hero to be believably wounded but able to turn it around. The ending is satisfying and I get what was promised to me when I opened the book.

This is second chance romance with a separation of 10 years. A lie by a friend separated them but it will take a bit of give & take to bring them back together in the form of an exchange for hero helping her save her business, she has to come to a winter retreat with him. I liked both characters. They had a good amount of steam & believable connection. I just wish it hadn’t taken them 10 yrs to reunite. I like my 2nd chance romances to be less than 5.
Any story with the Outlaws and the Westmorelands always ends in fun and good times! I love the way the two families support one another.
Even though 10 years have passed, Sloan is still hurt and angry that Leslie believed the lies of her sleazy roommate, and stormed out without hearing Sloan's side of it. Finally, Sarah's lies have been revealed.
But now one of Leslie's father's enemies is doing everything possible to take over her family's company, and only Sloan can stop him. Will this be the Christmas that both Sloan and Leslie get the gift they truly want?
I just couldn't get into the writing style or the storyline. The conflict/miscommunication between the hero and the heroine and the resulting 10 year seperation just felt overly contrived.
This was an OK second chance Christmas romance. I realized I keep reading these Outlaw/Westmoreland books because I am looking for the same thrill and/or excitement that I got from the original Westmoreland series.
I can get past everyone being uber wealthy, uber talented, uber gorgeous, uber sexy, etc. It is harder to get past a couple who has no chemistry. A couple whose dialogue is so formal and stiff that I had to wonder if they ever knew one another. I didn't sense any of the heat or seggsual tension from earlier books.
I do not what anyone to think this has anything to do with proper English. Slang does not have to be thrown into a book in order for it to be a good book. This has to do with people who were former lovers talking to each other like they were strangers negotiating their next business deal.
Then we had all of the "lip nibbling", and other terms, descriptions, statements that were so cringe worthy they were painful.
For example, " Consumed with passion" wasn't terrible. This one, "He was behaving worse than the last name he bore, Outlaw. He was more like a desperado, a bandit of the most merciless kind." Or, "Cold as the Dickens". REALLY, Who talks like that in 2021? OR, who is thinking that kind of thing when they are in the heat of the moment?
Even the conversation between family members and friends has that same level of formality. If you happen to like that type of stiff, formal communication then you will be good reading this book.
I found that the most interesting part of the book was the thing where the least amount of time was spent. The whole convoluted situation with Longshire trying to take over the business and how that tied into other situations from the past. That was much more interesting than the relationship.
I did like the description of the Kodiak cabin.I am not a fan of cold weather by any means, but that cabin was made to sound cozy. I could stay there until spring, lol.
I am kind of anal in the need I have to finish a series. There are 2 books left that I haven't read. I am debating about them. I really, really want to love them, but I'm worried I won't.
